PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Dorothy O’Hagan, MNLM, RHIT, CCS, AHIMA ICD10 Trainer
Dear SDHIA Members,
Monthly Newsletter of San Diego Health Information Association
What an honor and privilege to represent you as the SDHIA President during a year
ISSUE 22 December 2013
where we are experiencing some historic changes, and yes, I am talking about ICD-10!
Back in 2011, I transitioned from an EMR Systems Analyst role to my roots in Health
Information because I wanted to be a part of ICD-10. Little did I know back in 2011 that
October 1, 2015 would be the date! It seems fitting that our October meeting focus on
the topic of ICD-10, but not just for a time of discussion, but for a time of celebration!
One highlight from the last year was having the AHIMA national convention right here in
San Diego. Not only were many from San Diego able to attend the convention, we were
able to see one of our very own SDHIA members, AHIMA President Cassi Birnbaum, on
stage. I mention this to remind us all of the impact San Diego has in the Health
Information industry – your commitment to our profession is making a difference across
the nation! Thank you to Cassi from all of us in SDHIA for what she has accomplished
and her model of service excellence!
ICD-10 is not all that is going on right now in Health Information Management (HIM).
Topics such as Information Governance, Health Information Exchange, Patient Matching,
Analytics, Meaningful Use, Mobile Health, Health Informatics, Cybersecurity, Clinical
Documentation Improvement, Computer Assisted Coding, Privacy, Patient Portals, and
let’s not forget Electronic Medical Records…all normal conversation in the day and life of
a HIM professional in San Diego!
To help keep us up-to-date and aware of all that is going on in our industry, your
2015/2016 President-Elect, Joanne Hewitt, RHIT, has been busy working on some
exceptional programming for this year’s Educational Sessions. Make sure to check out
the Education Corner of the Newsletter and mark your calendars now for our upcoming
meetings – you will not be disappointed!
In addition to great programming and time for celebration that we will have “Survived”
ICD-10, we are also planning to have a Winter Dinner at our December 8, 2015 meeting
and end our year with a Spring Celebration at our May 10, 2016 meeting. Yes, this is a
year of celebration indeed.

As we count down to the last few weeks before ICD-10 is implemented, CMS has released the final 2016
ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding guidelines. In the area of ICD-10-PCS, some significant changes have been made to the
body-part key related to Cranial and Spinal Structures. Lynn Kuehn, MS, RHIA, CCS-P, FAHIMA discusses the specific
changes in an internet article located at:
http://www.libmaneducation.com/significant-change-to-icd-10-pcs-body-part-key-cranial-vs-spinal-structures.
If you would like to reference the final guidelines as well as a summary of changes, they are available on the CMS
website at: https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/ICD10/2016-ICD-10-PCS-and-GEMs.html
