WILSHIRE BOULEVARD TEMPLE BULLETIN Volume 97, Number 8 • August 1, 2010 Elul—A Time to Prepare— “Avinu Malkeynu is in the Field” I magine if today you tried to go to the White House and have a personal audience with President Obama. You would need to be very important, maybe a dignitary or a prime minister. After security measures and background checks, metal detectors and sniffing dogs you would be granted your few minutes–and you would need to get straight to the point. The kabbalists of ancient Tzefat teach that during the High Holy Days, God is closed up in a palace, secluded behind a labyrinth of walls and security measures. If we are fortunate and very serious in our prayers, maybe we will be granted an audience before Avinu Malkeynu for a few minutes–and we need to get straight to the point. The sages teach that during the month before the High Holy Days, God is not in seclusion behind palace walls. In the month of Elul, God is in the fields, easy to reach, no security, no pretense, no appointment necessary. We can “get to God” much easier as we get ready for the most serious days in our Jewish calendar. We can “get to God” and begin the serious work of the soul that will help us lay the ground work for a rewarding year. In the quiet stillness of Elul we begin to move towards the essence of the High Holy Days. We prepare for the important times in life. Whether a wedding, a family trip, academic careers, Thanksgiving or a house remodel–the more prepared we are, the better the results will be. So too, we take time in the month of Elul to prepare. We prepare when God is easy to reach. We prepare to re-new ourselves and re-connect with our values and goals before we actually go to services. Consider how being prepared this year may enhance your experiences during the holidays. If we can come to services already having wrestled with the following questions, our prayer experience will be more moving than last year. The central theme of Rosh HaShannah is new beginnings. How can we begin anew with our loved ones? The central concept of Yom Kippur is repentance. How can we take the mistakes of the past year, learn from them and change our ways? Sukkot is about hospitality. How can our home be a refuge from the outside world and become a sanctuary? How does our home reflect our values? Simchat Torah envelops us in the world of Torah. How will we allow Torah to enter our lives this year? If we ask the hard questions in the month of Elul, while God is in the fields, the month of the High Holy Days will transport us to the palace–no appointment necessary. Rabbi Elissa Ben-Naim In This Issue Welcome Eran! An Experience of a Lifetime Ambassador Lester & Carolbeth Korn Torah Portion Torah Online: www.wbtla.org Summer Rituals A s August arrives, still immersed in summer rituals, the Jewish calendar offers another kind of ritual – preparation for The High Holy Days. Yes, it is that time again when we are challenged to add to our daily summer fun; family vacations, children returning from camp, relaxing days at the beach or ballpark. We are reminded to stir into our cool, refreshing lemonade the serious sweetness of reflection. It is no accident that the Torah portion R’ei introduces the High Holy Day season, just days before the month of Elul. As we journey towards the Yamim Noraim (the Days of Awe), the shofar is heard throughout the Jewish world as a piercing reminder to turn inward. It is time to evaluate our lives. And so too, Parashat R’ei offers its own clarion call, jolting us from our summer rush of recreation to a mindful pause. “This day I set before you blessing and curse.” The Torah challenges us to seek blessing in every choice we make in our lives. Each and every day, moment to moment, we are confronted with choices be they simple or complicated, trivial or life changing. With every choice we are tested. Blessing or curse? Right or wrong? Selfish or selfless? Kind or cruel? We are tested constantly with contemporary choices with the call to see: R’ei! “…for the Eternal your God is testing you whether you really love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.” This is our annual opportunity as individuals and as a community to embrace the Torah’s challenge. Come to services during Elul and hear the shofar’s call! Listen to your One Voice CD and let the beauty of our High Holy Day melodies reside in your heart. And turn towards the Torah, to God and to one another for a year of blessing! Cantor Don Gurney Plugged In -TECHHoly Days The High- E very year at Wilshire Boulevard Temple, we try to improve the ways in which we deliver digital content to you about the High Holy Days and all related activities. Also, visit our website for all your High Holy Days information, www.wbtla.org Tikkun Olam New Beginnings A few weeks ago at a meeting of interfaith clergy discussing social justice work, one of my Christian colleagues addressed the rabbis in the room and said, “You guys have it so easy! I have to convince my congregants that social justice is a part of our tradition, you don’t have to work to make social justice a Jewish concept, it just is.” He is right. Tikkun olam is a thread that is so authentically and intricately woven into the fabric of Judaism that if we tried to pull it out, the entire tapestry would unravel. Working to bring balance to the world in which we live is a fundamental part of our lives as Jews. Our Temple has a proud history of tikkun olam that continues with the Big Give, Big Sunday, our Lifesavers for Haiti project, tikkun olam trips to places like Uganda or India, and the hundreds of hungry people who are fed each and every week at our food pantries. As we move forward into the coming year, we do so with a new group of dedicated and hardworking people who are committed to helping us achieve excellence in our social justice work. Our new Tikkun Olam Committee is revitalizing and expanding the many ways in which our Temple community responds to the challenges facing our world. Most of all, we are bringing people together as we engage in meaningful work and experience the warmth of our Jewish community. Incoming kindergartners and their parents could not have asked for more as they enjoyed the afternoon becoming friends and sharing a special Brawerman experience. The newest Brawerman kindergartners (the Class of 2017) have many opportunities to get to know their school, teachers and classmates as they prepare for their first day. One Friday afternoon in June, the children spent time with their teachers in the kindergarten classrooms while their parents met with Head of School, Nadine Breuer. Families then welcomed Shabbat with the school community and received a gift bag that included challah, candles and a Brawerman t-shirt. Parent Association Incoming Family Chairs, Hayley Miller, Mandy Stein and Shirin Yadegar, supported by an incredible committee, planned these events and more. They hosted a wonderful dinner for all incoming parents, connected new families with host families and produced a beautiful Directory of New Friends so everyone can keep in touch. We look forward to welcoming our new friends when school begins on August 30. To learn more about Brawerman Elementary School, visit www.brawerman.org Religious School: “Center for Learning & Engagement” A Message from the Religious School’s Eran Bar-Adon T hroughout my twelve years of teaching at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple religious school, and being a b’nei mitzvah tutor, I have experienced many of the rewards and challenges of teaching Hebrew. It is most gratifying to witness the growth and success of our students, as they beam with pride on their bar or bat mitzvah day. For our students to carry on our tradition is by no means a small feat. We expect our children to learn our ancient language by seventh grade through attending Hebrew classes once a week. Temple students are incredibly well rounded and involved in their community and extra-curricular activities. With such busy schedules, it is a challenge to succeed at their bar or bat mitzvah. So how have we been able to do just that? 4 It is a collective effort, through the commitment of the students, the support of their parents and grandparents, and with our dedicated teachers, school leadership and clergy. As the person appointed by our Religious School Director, Sarah Hanuka to lead the Family & Hebrew Education programs, I want to thank you for your continued commitment, and promise you mine. I am dedicated to providing our children with a meaningful Jewish education in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment. It has been a wonderful dozen years of teaching our students, and I look forward to many more. I am honored to be part of this community, and thankful for the opportunity. Much Joy to You, Eran Bar-Adon, M.A., LMFT Fir st K Early Childhood Centers azer l G t a a im d a O ur first three children are graduating from the Erika J. Glazer Nursery School. We call this Kadima, moving forward. It has been a pleasure watching them grow into “mensch-y” children and we are grateful to have been a part of their families’ lives. Our pioneer families will be missed, but we look forward to seeing them in religious school and attending Temple-wide events. The school year has come to an end all too fast. The end is always so bitter sweet; but Dr. Seuss reminds us, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Carol Bovill, Fredda Loewenstein, Sherrie Zadok and Leslie Cerruti “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Camps An Experience of a Lifetime F orty teenagers, dragging duffels and suitcases, arrived at LAX on June 30 to participate in the NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) in Israel program with friends from our camps and our Temple. Their excitement and anticipation was palpable as they maneuvered through the check-in lines clutching passports and pillows. Parents hugged their kids, reminding them to be cautious, to have fun, and most importantly, to enjoy every moment of what would be for each participant, a life-changing experience. And so began their journey to Israel. Over the next four weeks, they traveled from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; from Elat to Tiberias. They spent the night in Bedouin tents, rode camels, climbed Masada to see the sun rise and stayed on a kibbutz. They made a pilgrimage to the Kotel, the last remaining relic of the Temple and celebrated Shabbat. They slept under the stars in the Negev Desert and went kayaking on the Jordan River. They traveled to the mystical city of Tzfat, participated in an archeological dig and swam in the Dead Sea. They visited Yad V’shem-Israel’s Holocaust memorial and museum in Jerusalem and explored Tel Aviv. They lived and learned about Israeli life, culture and history, day in and day out. For each of these young men and women, their Israel experience will be a time they will never forget. And when they join our community for Shabbat at Camp Hess Kramer in August, we’ll hear their stories and relive their experiences together. Cheri Lauterbach Alumni & Development Director 5 Developments Ambassador Lester & Carolbeth Korn MAKE LEADERSHIP GIFT TO RESTORE KIMBALL ORGAN Ambassador and Mrs. Korn with Rabbi Magnin in 1982 T he Temple’s historic Kimball organ will be fully restored thanks to a generous new gift of $1 million from Ambassador Lester and Carolbeth Korn. Longtime congregants whose involvement with the Temple spans four decades, the Korns’ gift is in memory of their daughter Dr. Jessica Susan Korn and in honor of their daughter and granddaughter, Jodi Korn Radoff and Sloane Korn Radoff and son-in-law Robert Radoff. “We are very happy to be able to make this gift and hope that it encourages others to support the restoration and redevelopment of our historic Temple,” notes Ambassador Korn. Both of their daughters attended the Temple’s religious school and Sloane is a student at Brawerman Elementary. At the time of the sanctuary’s dedication in 1929, the Kimball Organ Company was the largest in America, and the Korn Kimball organ is one of the finest examples of its kind. With more than 4,000 pipes housed in five chambers above the sanctuary choirloft, it presents a magnificent array of sound. It has been showcased by the American Guild of Organists at its annual meeting and can be heard with full choir during the High Holy Days and Shabbat morning services. Although the organ still retains all its original parts, it requires extensive work which the Korns have generously underwritten. A mbassador Korn and Mrs. Korn have long and distinguished careers in business, diplomacy and public service. Ambassador Korn is the founder of Korn/Ferry International, the world’s largest executive search firm, where he served as Chairman and CEO from 1969-1991 and thereafter Chairman Emeritus. He is also the founder and CEO of Korn Capital Group. He served as Ambassador to the United Nations and as US Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council during 1987 and 1988. He was also a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fel- 6 lowships. From 1989 to the present, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Council of American Ambassadors. Mrs. Korn has a notable career as a civic leader and philanthropist. A founder of the First Beverly Bank, she is a director of Korn-Tuttle Capital Group. She and the ambassador have both been active in the L.A. Music Center and both serve on the Board of Directors of the Music Center of Los Angeles County. Mrs. Korn was Chairman and CEO of the Founders League where she was elected Chairman Emeritus. She has been a Blue Ribbon member for 20 years and takes special delight in the annual Children’s Festival of which she has also served as a chair. M rs. Korn also serves on the President’s Council of the Richard M. Nixon Library and is a member of the Chairman’s Club of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. She is also a founding member of the Los Angeles Library Foundation Council. As UCLA alumni, Ambassador and Mrs. Korn have been active and generous supporters of their alma mater. Mrs. Korn created the Carolbeth Korn Prize Endowment in the School of Public Health and had the Dean’s Conference Room named in her honor. The Ambassador serves as a director of the Anderson School of Business which named the Korn Convocation Hall in their honor. Together they assisted in the development of the John Wooden Center and the James E. West Alumni Center. Our entire congregation expresses our gratitude to the Korns for their generosity and their gift of music in our magnificent sanctuary for generations to come.
