A Look Back
Last year at this time, The
St. Bernard Parish Post
agreed to take part in my
Parish Pride Series, which
highlights some of the great
people of St. Bernard. Before we launch into our
2014 interviews, I thought
it would be nice to take one
more look back. We kicked
off our series with a gifted
athlete

The Student Athlete is a former Chalmette High School
Golden Owl and a current
member of the LSU Volleyball Team. After earning 20 varsity letters during her high school career,
Haley enrolled at LSU and
walked on to its volleyball
team, highlighted by being
named as the SEC Freshmen of the Week.
“It’s still hard to believe I
play in the SEC. But with
all the equipment and special treatment, I would say
my favorite part of this experience so far has been
the people I have met and
the bonds I have made with
these people.”

“Let’s be honest, we are all
kids at heart and being Oreo
allows me to still be a kid.
When you’re dancing and
kids see us and they start
dancing and smiling, it really is worth it. During Mardi Gras, the Stompers are
known to have an impromptu
dance party with the crowd.
The kids are the first ones out
there dancing. We will make a
circle [like at a wedding] and
let them have the spotlight.
It’s like they are a superstar
for that moment. That’s my
favorite part for sure.”

Doyle shared some insight to
his craft.
“We bake everything fresh,
so we’re baking every day
around noon. Mondays are
when we do our specialty
decorations for the weekend.
Any chocolate work, carved
pieces, sugar work, bows,
broaches, pastillage and so
on is done so that it can set
up to be put on cakes for the
weekend. We get busier closer to the weekend in terms of
number of cakes going out
so more of our time is spent
making fresh creams, icings,

“I would say it has shown
to be a great choice. Even
though we miss our family and old friends, we have
been blessed from the beginning with great jobs, a nice

welcomed and accepted into
it.”
And when I asked them about
the food down here.
Jenny: “I’m not a huge fan of
sucking crawfish heads.”
Brett: “And we’re not used to
all the fried food. And I don’t
like stuffed artichokes, but I
love some Rocky’s baked mac
and cheese with red gravy.”
Jenny: “Yeah, he will eat just
about anything.”

The Dancer has been performing since she has been
two-years old — on stage
and at the New Orleans Arena.
“I competed at dance competitions all over the country
for about 10 years. I was also
on dance team in high school;
I was a Hawkette at Archbishop Hannan High School
and a Charmer at Chalmette
High. I have been able to take
classes from many professional dancers that you see
on TV shows including “So
You Think You Can Dance?”
Dance has always been a major part of my life.”

throughout the recent events
regarding my divorce, St.
Bernard Parish Government’s policy states that I
can NOT discuss matters
related to any litigation involving government.
For the past several months I have made every effort to maintain “the highroad” as it pertains to the baseless allegations made by Sharon
Peralta. First and foremost, let me apologize to
the citizens of this great Parish, who along with
me, have had their reputations smeared. Finally,
the Orleans Parish Judge DISMISSED Sharon’s
Protective Order against me this week after hearing testimony from both sides.

and I will continue to serve this community as
I promised upon taking office. I am confident
that within a very short time the truth will come

very challenging role.
“My proudest moment was also
my most terrifying. I was recently cast as Stanley Kowalski from
“Streetcar.” It is the iconic role
in American theatre. And I was
excited and terrified for that exact reason. Everyone knows the
play and the character and how

I had to put my own flair and
nuances into it. And I did and
that was my proudest moment
on stage.”

group of men who dress like Elvis and ride motorized scooters.
“Well, I was always an Elvis
fan. I liked his music, his style
and his clothes. And then one
day, I saw them rolling down
the street and I said, ‘oh my god
that’s the coolest thing ever’, so
I joined. Plus, I already had the
sideburns for it.

Shirley: “When we moved back
to St. Bernard in 2007, it was
with the understanding that we
were going to become an active
participant in helping move St.
Bernard Parish forward. Each of
us in our own way has found a
niche that works for us, allowing
us to contribute positively to our
community that we live in.”
Mike: “Our favorite thing about
living in St. Bernard is the people. It is the only reason we
came back. Family, friends and
community...that’s what St. Bernard is all about. There was no
way to replace that feeling. That
was true in the Marines and was
true after Katrina.”

the motto of ‘Take time to smell
the roses’ and think that we have

a family man, with a big personality and an even bigger
heart. And for over 45 years,
he was also a guiding force and
inspiration to the people of the
Parish. Sam died suddenly this
summer, just weeks after retiring from the St. Bernard Parish School System he loved and
gave so much to. And while he
is gone, his legacy lives on. He
truly was a teacher, leader, and
friend.

“I have loved all sports since I
can remember. I was very much
a tomboy. I first started playing
sports in the street in my neighborhood with all the kids who
lived there, who happened to be
boys! Then, as soon as I could
start playing for recreation at
age 5, I did. I played all my
sports for Rebel Park. I guess it
was then that my love for sports
started and continued to grow
and really never stopped.”
“I attribute the success we have
to the girls who stick it out year
after year, and play their hearts
out every day in practice and
games. I ask a lot of my players.
They need to be fully committed,
have a great work ethic, be very
disciplined and dedicated to our
program. The hard work and intensity they display, especially
always being a smaller team, is
inspirational and motivating.”
“I am grateful that I can give
back to my community because
St. Bernard gave so much to
me growing up. The people I’ve
worked with over the years are
so fun and great to be around —
we’re not just co-workers. We’ve
become friends and stay friends
even after they leave or retire.
The students are great because
they are down to earth and fun
loving. And it absolutely cannot
get any better than working for
Mr. Warner. He is a wonderful
person and an incredible principal! Working for him has made
my job a true blessing, not just
a place to go to work and get a
paycheck. He is so inspirational
— always positive. I can’t imagine working for anyone else. I
just hope I retire before him!”

Fernandez Was a
Public Servant
Manuel “Manny” Fernandez, retired St. Bernard Parish state 34th
Judicial District Court Judge for 12
years and former state legislator,
died early Saturday morning at St.
Bernard Parish Hospital. Fernandez
had entered the hospital on Thursday. He was 71.
Fernandez served in all three
branches of state government: legislative, executive and judicial. He
served as Division B Judge in St. Bernard for 12 years, from 2001 until
his retirement June 1, 2013. He was
104th District state representative
from 1976 to 1988 and also was an
assistant chief of staff to former Gov.
Buddy Roemer.
“It was just time for me to move
on,” he said after spending his last
day as a sitting judge on May 31. “One
of the things that I think is most important is knowing when it is time to
move on, when it is time to say goodbye.”
In May 2001, Fernandez beat
Sharon Williams by only 158 votes
in a runoff to finish out the year left
in Judge David Gorbaty’s term after Gorbaty was elected to an appeals court position. At that time, the
judgeship race was called the closest
in St. Bernard history.
But about 16 months later in October 2002, Fernandez easily won
the seat, receiving more than 5,000
votes over his closest rival.
Last summer, Fernandez said
that as a legislator he was most proud
of helping to rewrite the law so that
wives had equal management rights
of community property.
The St. Bernard Business & Professional Women’s Club recently awarded the 2013
Golden Circle Award to Lauren Gibson. The Golden Circle Award was sponsored
by Louise Gorbaty, Past President of BPW. Gorbaty started the award to honor a
member who has given of their time and support to the Club and the Parish, but

Tales on Tuesdays. Storytime friends are invited to visit
the St. Bernard Parish Library
as it begins its 2014 Winter/
Spring Tales on Tuesdays sessions. This free story program
will run through May 6. Two sessions of Tales on Tuesdays will
be held each week for children
three years of age and older. The
earlier time is set for 1 p.m. and
is geared for younger listeners.
The evening session will begin at
5:30 p.m. and is open to children
of all ages, but will target schoolaged children. All story programs
will take place at the St. Bernard

St. Bernard’s Spanish roots
date back to the 1700s when Canary Islanders came to the area
and settled. The traditions, food,
music, and dance of the people are celebrated yearly at the
Los Islenos Fiesta held on the
grounds of Los Islenos Museum
& Village. The historic Isleño Village, situated in the rear of the
Isleño Museum, is the setting for
a series of living history demonstrations featuring folk crafts,
historic vernacular life styles and
the cultural identity of the Isleño
descendant’s community in St.
Bernard Parish. Representatives
of the Houma Nation also interpert the history, culture and folk
traditions of the Houma Tribe.

The Reserve Division of the

An important goal of the automobile safety community is to in-
crease awareness of how dangerous it can be to use a cell phone while
driving a motor vehicle. Observations were found that when people
use a cell phone while driving, their driving capabilities were severely
diminished. It is very interesting to note that this hindrance is also observed when hands-free devices are used. This means that the direct
handling of a cell phone is not the only hazard. According to researchers, “It’s the divided attention between the conversation and task of
driving that raises the risk of collisions.” The misdirection of attention
causes drivers to misjudge their driving speed relative to other drivers
and causes them to apply their break late, which increases the risk of
rear impact collisions. This sobering study discovered that using a cell
phone while driving reduces driving skills to levels of execution that are
found in drunk drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08.

Chalmette High Owl Football Players Honored

The Chalmette High Football
team was honored last week with
a dinner and award presentation
ceremony.
Junior Connor Lambert was
named as the team’s Most Valuable Player, and he was also
named to the 8-5A All-District
team as a defensive back. Lambert was also a big part of Chalmette offense from his running
back position. On defense, he
made 36 tackles and had an interception to help preserve a district win against Higgins. He was
also the team’s leading rusher on
offense with 707 yards and eight
touchdowns. Connor also caught
six passes and returned kickoffs
for a 19-yard average.
“Connor was asked to play
both ways this season, and he
did a great job on both sides of
the football,” head coach Jason
Tucker said of his team’s MVP.
“He played when he was injured
and did whatever the coaches
needed him to do to help the
team,”
Other first team 8-5A AllDistrict Players were Zeke Kiersey, Juan Esparza, Austin
Bergeron, and Jalin Scott. All
five Owls named to All-District
team are juniors.
“Austin led the team in tackles and was like a quarterback
for the defense. He would make
the calls and adjustments on the
field,” Tucker said of Bergeron,

who had 62 tackles on the season
from his linebacker position.
“Zeke was our best offensive
lineman this season. He played
tackle and center. He made line
calls and used his intelligence
and technique to be one of the
best players in the district,”
coach Tucker said of Kiersey.
“Jalin was asked to switch
positions this season from linebacker to defensive line. He also
made first team 10-5A All-District last season as a sophomore
at his linebacker position. This
year he was also named All-State
honorable mention,” Tucker said
of Scott who had 60 tackles, four
fumble recoveries, returning
one for a 55-yard touchdown.
He had 13 tackles for losses in a
season when he was often double-teamed to try and slow him
down. Jalin was also named the
team’s defensive MVP.
“Juan Esparza came into the
season as the backup kicker to
Maynor Ayala. When Ayala was
sidelined with an injury, Juan
came in and did a good job in the
kicking game,” mentioned Tucker. Esparza made a 42-yard field
goal in a big district win against
West Jeff, and he also did a good
job kicking off to help the Owl
defense with field position.
The Owl coaches also gave
out four Captain’s Awards for
leadership, character, and success on the field. Kiersey and

This past weekend St. Bernard Parish lost one of
our truly great citizens with the passing of Judge
Manny Fernandez after a brief illness.
Judge Fernandez loved St. Bernard Parish and
Captain Casey Kieff
dedicated many years of his life in public service to
the Parish — first as a State Representative, next as Assistant Chief of
Staff to Governor Roemer, and the last 12 years as district judge.
The Judge loved fishing and I was fortunate enough to be his fishing
buddy for countless trips. The times we had together I will cherish for
the rest of my life. Please keep his wife, Dorothy, and family in your
prayers.

of Alphonso, who was named to
the All-District second team as a
quarterback.
The Coaches Award was given to running back Jayvon Lewis
for his work ethic and attitude as
a member of the football team.

Dorsey Ranks 4th
in Nation

Andre Dorsey who set school records in
two jumping events as a senior at Chalmette
High School, which included a state championship in the high jump when he barely missed
clearing 7’, now competes for Kennesaw State
in Georgia. He was a collegiate All-American
last year, setting a school record by clearing
7’2.5” to win the high jump competition.
Dorsey’s winning mark moved him into
the NCAA Division I fourth place ranking for
his performance at the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational Indoor track and field meet held at
Winston-Salem, N.C recently.
After clearing the school-record 7’-2.5”
vertical leap, Dorsey had officials move the bar
up to 7’-3.5”. With the crowd urging Dorsey on
with thunderous clapping on all three of his approaching runs to the bar, he treated the fans to
a trio of great attempts at the second-best USA
college high jump for the early season.
Not only did the outstanding high jump
performance give Dorsey a national ranking,
but also the mark set a school record and he is
only the second athlete at Kennesaw State to
ever clear 7’ or better either indoor or outdoor.
In addition to the elite high jump standing
for the junior Owl jumper, he also ranks 12th
nationally in the triple jump when he hit a season best of 51’-6.5” to claim first place and set
a JDL facility record in the hop-step and jump
event.
With victories in the two jumping events
with high-ranking national marks, Dorsey has
established himself as one of the most outstanding two-event jumpers on the collegiate
level this indoor season.
Last indoor season Dorsey became Kennesaw State’s first All-American athlete as he
finished in the top 14 triple jumpers at the
national championship meet to earn a second
team All-America performance in the triple
jump.
Three weeks ago, Dorsey opened his 2014
indoor season by recording three third place
performances at the UAB Blazer Invitational
meet at the Birmingham, Ala., Metro Cross
Plex.
His best of three jumping events was set
in the long jump as he established a school
record leap of 24’-5.5”. He followed up the record-setting long jump mark by nearly reaching the 7’ mark in the high jump by reaching
6’-10.75” and finished up his full day of jumping with a steady 48’-7.25” triple jump measurement.

and president of Jimmy’s Kids,
Besson has been a leading philanthropist and advocate for the
handicapped in St. Bernard Parish. Longtime philanthropist

founder Chris Roussel will be
recognized as the 2013 Elphage
Callihouette Special Recognition Award winner.
The 2013 Amateur Athletes
of the Year are Sean Beckwith of
Chalmette High and Maci Ousset of Cabrini High. Beckwith
was a letterman in football and
baseball, as well as Academic
All-State in football. Ousset is a
karate blackebelt who won the
women’s world championship
in 2013. She also won a state
championship with the Cabrini
volleyball team in 2011. Nicholas Michael, formerly of Holy
Cross High, will be presented a

The newest place to play
pool in St. Bernard is Lacys
Cue Sports Bar at 701 W. Judge
Perez Dr. in Chalmette. The establishment, which opened its
doors in mid-December and
had its Grand Opening on Jan.
18, has taken the concept of the
old pool hall into the modern
era of the billiards sports bar.
Lacys features a smokefree environment with 33 pool
tables — 17 coin-operated,
seven-foot tables; 16 nine-foot
tournament tables, and a 10foot championship table for the
high-end players.
Owner Frank Haines said
he envisioned lots of tournament play in the establishment
when he made up his mind to

Educational Institute (EI) on
Tues., Feb. 4, 2014.

and Tourism (HRT) Program
Manager, Calvin Desdunes,
presented the five business students with the “Certified Guest
Service Professional” (CGSP)
credential. The CGSP prepares
holders for the entire line of
guest service interaction, from
front office, revenue management, food and beverage, and
housekeeping to maintenance,
security, human resources,
and sales. AH&LA calls its EI
“the global leader in hospitality training and hotel management certifications,” offering
training in hotel & lodging best
practices for “the highest stan-
dards of competency” as a professional in the industry.
A December 2013 University of New Orleans (UNO)
Metropolitan report cites,
“About 5.04 million visitors
came to the New Orleans area
in the first half of 2013, marking a 2 percent increase over
the 4.94 million visitors who
came during the same period
in 2012. Spending estimates

The five students who received their CGSP certificates
and pins were Maxwell Austin,

Tabetha Schloegel, and Judina Tarleton. Their certification was built in to the HRT
program’s Intro to Hospitality
Management class, offered at
Nunez in the Fall 2013 semester.

Escarabajal Completes Student Teaching at CHS
Tenerife native Alejandro Escarabajal
presented gifts for use and display in the
Los Islenos Museum during his “goingaway dinner” hosted by Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society recently at the
Los Islenos Center, 1357 A Bayou Road, St.
Bernard Village. Escarabajal is a native of
the Canary Islands, an autonomous region
of Spain. Colonists from the Canaries, particularly the islands of Tenerife and Gran
Canaria, founded St. Bernard Civil Parish
between 1779 and 1783.
Escarabajal was recently graduated
from the Universidad de La Laguna in
Tenerife with a masters degree in Education, specializing in history and historic
geography. He also is certified in Spain to
teach English as a second language to students. St. Bernard Parish Government and
the Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural So-
ciety arranged for Escarabajal to perform
his student teaching abroad at Chalmette
High School in St. Bernard Parish. At the
end of his three-month tenure, Chalmette
High School students became conversant
with the basic history and geography of the
Canaries. Escarabajal also taught English
as a second language to Spanish speaking
students.
“Alejandro made himself indispensible to the faculty and students at Chalmette High School” said William Hyland,
St. Bernard Parish Historian and manager
of Los Islenos Museum Complex. “The
students were particularly enriched by the
opportunity to work with Mr. Escarabajal.”
“It has been an objective of Los Islenos Society to bring the history, culture
and Spanish dialect of the Canaries to the
youth of St. Bernard Parish. What better
way to accomplish that objective than to
have a teacher from the Canary Islands
teaching at Chalmette High School” said
Lloyd “Wimpy” Serigne, President of Los
Islenos Society. “The Society thanks Superintendent Doris Voitier and Chalmette
High School Principal Wayne Warner for
making it possible for Alejandro to teach
in the St. Bernard Parish Public School
System.”
The expenses involved in travel,
housing and transportation were borne by
Escarabajal and Los Islenos Society volunteers, so that no public funds were expended to subsidize this cultural exchange.
St. Bernard Parish Government owns
the Los Islenos Museum Complex and
works with the Los Islenos Society to manage, develop and maintain the museum
complex. The organization will continue to
work with Dr. Ulises Martin, Universidad
de La Laguna, to bring Canarian teachers
to St. Bernard Parish in the future.

Audrey Marie Frank left this life on
Jan. 31, 2014, at the age of 88. Born in
New Orleans, lived in Chalmette for over
45 years and for the past 8 years a resident of Metairie. Loving wife to Ferdinand
“Ferdie” Frank, Jr. for 73 years. Devoted
mother of Kenneth Frank (Suzanne),
Richard Frank (Lisa), David Frank (Dee),
Darryl Frank (Margaret) and Karl Frank.
Sister of Marie Coralee “Mickey” Madary
and the late Leonce “Buddy” Bourgeois,
John Bouorgeois, Evelyn Avetant, Delores
Manint, Louise Chastant and Marie Stella
Rucker. Grandmother of Kristen (Randy),
Kendra (Clayton), Rocky (Melissa), Nick
(Jesse), and Justin. Great grandmother
of Ethan, Natalie, Morgan, Cole and Alexa.
Loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Audry was a generous and kind spirit who
never met a stranger. She was the ultimate
hostess and a gifted cook, never happier
than when she was entertaining and cooking for family and friends, making everyone feel comfortable and welcome was her
special talent. In lieu of flowers, donations
preferred to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial
on Tues., Feb. 11, 2014, at Schoen Funeral

Judge Manuel “Manny” Adam Fernandez passed away on Feb. 8, 2014, at
the age of 71. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Harrington Fernandez.
Loving father of Gina Fernandez, Jill Willie (Brett) and Amy Ybarzabal (James).
Stepfather of Casey Hutchens (AdriAnna). Son of the late Manuel William
Fernandez and Blanche Perez Fernandez
Molero. Stepson of the late Scott Molero.
Brother of Gerri Valene (Murray) and the
late William Fernandez (Julie). Proud
“Pop Pop” of Nick, Eric, Daniel, Ben
and Madeline Priola; Foster, Simon and
Samuel Willie; Adam, Gabrielle, Kyle and
Camille Ybarzabal; and Emily Hutchens.
Judge Fernandez was a lifelong resident
of St. Bernard Parish. Retired Judge
34th Judicial District Court where he
served as Chief Judge and founder of the
drug court. Judge Fernandez served in
all three branches of state government,
concentrating his efforts in the LA State
Legislature from 1972 through 1987
where he authored significant legislation,
including the Revision of Community
Property Laws and the formation of the
Department of Environmental Quality.
He was proudly recognized as “Man of
the Year” and “Legislator of the Year” in
St. Bernard Parish. He will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal husband,
father, grandfather and a friend to many,
who loved his community and treasured
his family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to
be held at OUR LADY OF LOURDES
CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2621 Colonial
Blvd, Violet, LA on Tuesday, February
11th from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., followed by a
Funeral Mass beginning at 11 a.m. Burial

Sheriff’s New Mobile Emergency Operations
Center Will Allow Parade Goers to Track
Parade Via Department’s Facebook Page
With parade season upcoming, the
St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office will
have two firsts: its new Mobile Emergency Operations Center will lead a
Carnival parade and the Irish, Italian, Islenos parade, while a deputy on
board will use the sheriff’s Facebook
page to post live updates of parade locations.
“I look forward to showing our
residents and others on the parade
routes the Mobile Emergency Operations Center, or Command Post, we
acquired last fall through a federal
grant,” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “Some
of you may have seen it being driven
through the Parish for use during a
tropical storm last October or at the
Jerry Rathburn 911 Center in Chalmette. It suits our needs well as a command post and will become a fixture
in Parish parades.”
The new center will be the lead
unit in both the ninth anniversary parade of the Knights of Nemesis, starting at 1 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 22, and the
Irish, Italian, Islenos parade at noon
on Sun., April 6,” Sheriff Pohlmann
said
The Operations Center will coordinate the running of the parades as
well as road closings as it moves along
the route, he said.
And, as the Operations Center
rolls along Judge Perez Dr. in both parades, inside the vehicle Capt. Angie
Huff will post live updates on the parades’ location on the Sheriff’s Facebook page. Capt. Bret Bowen will be
driving the Mobile Emergency Operations Center.
It’s the first time such live updates
for the location of the beginning of a
parade have been posted by the Sheriff’s Office. Also look at the sheriff’s
Facebook page for updates on the latest news involving law enforcement in
St. Bernard Parish.
“We hope people, especially children, find it to be fun and helpful to
know when a parade will approach
their location,” Sheriff Pohlmann said.
The Mobile Emergency Operations
Center was acquired through a federal
grant and was delivered in September
2013.

favorite Deuce McAllister and current Saint player Will Smith have
been named Celebrity Knights for the
Knights of Nemesis Carnival parade,
organization President Billy Showalter said.
The Irish, Italian, Islenos parade
annually features throws of vegetables
including cabbage, carrots and potatoes to the crowd, celebrating three
cultures of the Parish.

Campbell Takes Over as Chairperson For Metropolitan Human
Services District Dedicated to Helping Families in Crisis
St. Bernard Parish families who are in a crisis of
some sort, perhaps with family members feeling overwhelmed by problems and
don’t know what services are
available, can turn to a state
agency with crisis teams just
a phone call away at 504826-2675.
Perhaps little known, the
Metropolitan Human Services District (MHSD) was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 2003 and has been
helping St. Bernard Parish
residents. But officials are
reaching out to the community to invite more participation.
Metropolitan offers help
24 hours a day for those in
crisis, with response teams to
make home visits if needed
to provide support in areas
including mental health, substance addiction, and mak-
ing arrangements for respite
care. Callers have access to an
immediate range of services
including phone assessment,
home visits if necessary, and
respite care beds.
You should call Metropolitan at 504-826-2675 if
you know someone in crisis,
such as possibly being suicidal, or feeling overwhelmed,
withdrawn or depressed and
don’t know what to do or how
to get services to help. Specifically it can be someone
having a problem related to
mental illness, developmental disability or alcohol, drug
or gambling addiction. For
non-crisis care and services
call 504-568-3130.
St. Bernard activist Polly Campbell of Meraux has
been on the Metropolitan
board about three years but
has now become the agency’s
first board chairperson who
didn’t live in New Orleans.
The Metropolitan Human
Services District was created
to serve residents of Orleans,
St. Bernard and Plaquemines
parishes.
Campbell said, “I know
St. Bernard families are impacted” by some of the problems the MHSD was created
to help them with. “So many
kids and adults need treatment so they can be functional members of the communi-
ty instead of going to jail or to
a hospital.”
She said her goal is to
create awareness of all the
services being offered so our
community can take full advantage.

January 2014 Was Cold And Dry

January 2014 will long
be remembered for our two
mixed precipitation events.
In addition, there is a perception out there that this past
January was quite cold. Well,
if you thought that, you’d be
correct, as it was cold.
In fact, at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, January averaged 47°, which was 6° below
normal. This was the coldest
January since 1985. In addition, there were nine days
that had minimum temperatures below freezing, whereby it averages only four days
below freezing in a typical
January.
January 2009 also had
days below freezing, but
aside from that, we need to
go all the way back to January 1985 to beat this, when
they had 10 days below freezing.
Rainfall at the airport totaled 2.72 inches for January, which was 3.15 inches
below normal, hence we had
less than half of the rain than
that expected. Drought is
taking hold in Louisiana, but
I will likely spend some time
of that next week.
So what’s ahead for February? Well, we’re already
more than a week into it, but
the long range forecast from
the Climate Prediction Center shows that St. Bernard is
more likely than not to have
above normal temperatures
and normal precipitation.
But, as usual, I recommend
you ingest this with a grain of
