Report medicine shortages
HUMAN rights and health care services
organizations have formed a new project
to assist public health care users to report
shortage of medication in public health care
institutions.
This after more than one in five facilities in
the country reported a stock out or shortage
of ARV or TB medicines in the past three
months.
Medecins Sans Frontiers, Rural Health
Advocacy Project, Rural Doctors Association
of Southern Africa, Southern African HIV
Clinician’s Society, Section 27 and the
Treatment Action Campaign have launched
a national Stop Stock Outs Project to assist
the thousands of health care users whose lives
remain threatened by the chronic essential
medication stock outs and shortages.
According to the new project, Limpopo is
the second most severely affected province
with 40.8% of health facilities reporting ARV’s
and TB medication stock outs or shortages.
The Stop Stock Outs Project will
crowdsource stock out reports from patients,
healthcare workers and sentinel surveyors,
mapping the reported cases and tracking
specific issues. All reports will be escalated
through the supply chain and resolution
sought through the direct engagement of
civil society with accountable government
individuals and entities.
It is the hope of the Stop Stock Outs
Project that the data from the reports will
provide essential information to identify
and understand the root causes of stock
outs and shortages and bring visibility and
transparency to a struggling health system.
The Stop Stock Outs Project is calling on
patients and healthcare workers to report any
medication stock outs or shortages that have
resulted in patients’ treatment being changed,
patients being turned away from their clinic
and referred elsewhere and/or being given an
insufficient supply of medication.
To report stock outs and shortages, send
a Please Call Me, SMS or phone 084 855

Polisie se Watervleuel
vat wetteloosheid vas
DIE WATERVLEUEL van die Polisie in
Limpopo het die afgelope naweek op die
Tzaneendam gewerk en verskeie boetes
is uitgereik, waterponies is van die dam
verwyder en ‘n klomp onwettige visnette is
vernietig.
hengelklubs, nadat verskeie klagtes ontvang
is oor wetteloosheid en roekelose gedrag op
die Tzaneendam.
Hoewel die watervleuel se besoek
onderbreek is deur noodwerk wat elders
gedoen moes word, is daar tog verskeie boetes
uitgereik.
is.
terwyl ander se skippers nie gelisensieer was
watergebruikers beboet of gearresteer word,’
water benut. Ongelukkig is daar talle wat dit
misbruik en onverantwoordelik optree wat
groot gevaar vir ander gebruikers kan inhou.
Oor die Kerstyd veral was daar groot
getalle mense wat die dam besoek het.
Volgens inwoners wat naby die dam woon
was uitermate lawaai en losbandige gedrag,
wat gepaard gaan met drankmisbruik, baie
algemeen. Volgens inligting is die plaaslike
polisie verskeie kere gebel oor rusverstoring,
nie opgevolg of as grondige klagtes beskou
nie.
oortreders gaan vasvat.

UBUNTU: Nourish recently held a Christmas
party for vulnerable children at Rolle Orphan
Centre in December. The organisers would like
to thank each person who got involved.
Nourish makes a
difference, thanks
roleplayers
SARAH Bergs from Nourish writes:
WE all know Christmas is the season to be
jolly, that Christmas is the birth of a Saviour
to so many but for me Christmas is about love.
Love is about sharing, about Ubuntu, about
kindness, about the fact that we share a basic
humanity with each other and that we cannot
help but love those around us.
Especially those who don’t have families,
support, or warm beds and meals.
With this in mind, Nourish is proud to say
that the Orphan Christmas Party at Rolle
Orphan Centre was a huge success.
Rolle is a poverty-stricken village just on
the outskirts of Tulamahashe. Around 100
children visit this drop in centre daily, to be
a part of a positive safe environment, and get
help with homework etc.
While it is our dream at Nourish to feed
these children a healthy filling meal every
day- funds sadly do not yet allow this.
However twice a week, the children visit
and a huge pot of food is cooked so that all
can have a warm meal.
With the help of friends and the Hoedspruit
community, we hosted an incredible
Christmas Party, sharing a little bit of joy with
those in need.
We had two jumping castles thanks to
Naledi Lodge, Jacqui Sive, and Century
Safaris and these brought so much fun to the
children.
Almost 30 kids squished onto one and
squealed with laughter…
Goodie-bags of sweets, lots of popcorn, a
Christmas tree, drumming and dancing all
filled a lovely sunny day!
All the children got to line up for a warm
meal of impala stew and pap. Possibly their
only meal for that day.
What touched us the most was that the day
wasn’t about what they didn’t have at Rolle
Orphan Centre. It was not about lack, about
poverty, about being orphaned… This day
was about fun, about being a child and about
laughing.
That day there were no differences between
us… And this is what Christmas really is
about.
Nourish has been a platform for so much
joy to be spread- but it would not have been
possible without so many people’s love,
support and reaching out with open arms and
for this—I would like to say thank you!
For of all the fun Christmas pictures and
events we have been involved with check out
www.facebook.com/nourish.org.za.
Please also get in touch should you wish to
assist Rolle Orphan Centre with their dream
of providing their orphans with daily food

Thank you and remember: ‘The greatest of
these is love’.

PADDLE YOUR HEART OUT: The largest
white water fesƟval, the Blyde Xfest,
will take place from February 28 to
March 2 at the Blyde Adventure Camp.
XFEST SOON: A woman tackles the scenic mountain bike route
during 2013’s Blyde X-fest. Photo: Chantelle Melzer Photography.
Get ready for the Blyde X-fest
THE BLYDE Xfest will take place from
February 28 to March 2 at the Blyde
Adventure Camp on the Jonkmanspruit Road
just outside Hoedspruit.
This is the largest white water festival and
caters for experienced kayakers and mountain
bikers while still being a family friendly event
with plenty to do for the young ones.
The festival kicks off at 13:00 on February
28. The pro, intermediate and beginner
kayaking, as well as the social croc and tube
races will take place on March 1.
The Pro Race paddlers will take on the
Blyde River Canyon starting their day at
04:00 with some coffee and departing for the
race at 05:00.
The mountain bike route will truly test the
riders’ technical skills, although it is suitable
for beginners as well.
This loop track goes through indigenous
riverine forest, grass lands, orchards and
the beautifully scenic area of the Northern
Drakensberg.
Races from 5km to 20km can be entered
and juniors are welcome.
A kiddies’ race with older mountain bikers
cycling with them will also take place.
The mountain bike races will start early on
March 1, early enough that the afternoon’s
croc and tube races can also be entered.
Lots of prizes from the Xfest sponsors;
First Ascent, Fibram Five fingers, Whitewater
Training and many more are up for grabs
during the festival.
Participants and parents can also book in
the little ones for lots of entertainment and
fun at the Kids Corner.
Loads of accommodation and meals are
available at the Camp for the duration of the
festival.
For more information and online entries
for the Blyde Xfest 2014, visit their website
at www.blydeadventurecamp.com or contact
Ronél on 079 388 2196.
