POACHING ACT: Kruger2canyon biosphere acting out a poaching incident.
THE community of Welverdiend near the
Southern African Wildlife College held a
successful awareness campaign last Friday
against rhino poaching and its negative effects
on the country and environment.
The campaign that was launched in
conjunction with the celebration of Mandela
day started in the early morning with
participants running a 10.5km marathon. The
other community members and stakeholders
walked from Orpen Gate to Southern Wildlife
College collecting litter along the way.
Mark Pon of Mpumalanga Tourist Park
(MTP) urged the community members and
the stakeholders to fight poaching as it is
destroying the environment.
‘Fighting poaching will preserve people’s
jobs as one of the negative effects is that it
impacts on tourism. Tourism is an economic
booster that creates work in our country,’ said
Pon.
The community were reminded that they
can contribute to the war against rhino
poaching by reporting any suspicious
activities in their surroundings.
Kruger2canyon biosphere taught the
residents about the dangers of trusting rhino
poaching syndicates.
They spoke about how vulnerable
unemployed people are used and killed by the
rhino horn poaching syndicates.
Sboniso Phakathi from the Southern
African Wildlife College said that the poaching
affects us all. ‘This campaign is to help us
understand that is our responsibility to keep
our rhinos safe. There are a lot of people who
are not working because every rhino poached
means a lot of people losing their jobs,’ said
Phakathi.
Jeremiah Mahava from South African
National Park (SANParks) reminded the
stakeholders that winning the hearts and
minds of communities living around rhino
reserves is principal to intelligence. He
encouraged them to have more campaigns
and to try to work more closely with their
communities in this regard.
During the campaign a pensioner Inah
Hlongo was given food parcels that were
donated by the Southern African Wildlife
College and & Beyond Ngala Private Game
Reserve in celebration of Mandela day.
The Welverdiend Youth Service that
made the day possible would like to thank
the stakeholders who participated on
making the day a success; Mpumalanga
Tourist Park, Africa Foundation, SANParks,
Timbavati foundation, Southern African
Wildlife College, & Beyond Ngala Private
Game Reserve, Singita KNP, Nourish and
Kruger2canyon Biosphere.

WE CARE: GNT management spend a day to celebrate Mandela day with children at Sibonile day
care centre in Acornhoek
THANK YOU: Daphney Mahaule holding one of the preschool children with a fleece blanket her day
care centre received from GNT.
GNT giving back to
the community
GREAT North Transport (GNT) invested back
to community who support their company by
spending their 67 minutes to celebrate Nelson
Mandela day last Friday at Sibonile day care
centre in Acornhoek.
During the celebration Tika Ralepelle
from GNT said that the company must get
involved in anything that has to do with the
government initiatives.
‘We are here to spend our 67 minutes
with these children as their parents support
our company by using our buses every day.
We are not here to take their money but to
also plough back to their community,’ said
Ralepelle.
GNT Chief Executive Officer Tom Nkoana
said told the children that he has brought
them something and he promised to share a
meal with them.
The transport company donated a
Television set, chairs, tables, fleece blankets
and a swing after the day care was chosen as
one of the places in need in the area.
The company has even arranged a sponsor
from Telkom to visit the school and help in
renovating it and even modernising their
toilets before the end of the month.
The day care centre’s owner Daphney
Mahaule thanked the GNT for their generous
giving and applauded their good deed.
‘We’ve not received any free gifts before
but today we are honoured to receive these
lovely gifts especial the TV set as it will help
us as the children will have time to watch
programmes that will help in their education,’
said Mahaule.
Mahule said that the community needs
more companies who want to help the
communities who support them.

HELPING HAND: Family who lost their belonging when a fire
engulfed two rooms of their house received blankets and
other items from local businesses.
DESTROYED: Family members sitting next to one of the sofas
that was burned during a fire strike in Mathebula household.
A FAMILY who lost their property in a fire that ravaged
their house in Cottondale Village received help from
local businesses during the Mandela day celebration, last
Friday.
The family received blankets, food parcels and the
windows that were shattered during the fire were replaced.
Ward 20 Councillor Sunnyboy Rahlane said that the
family needed urgent help and when local businesses
asked him about the greatest need in his ward he saw it fit
that the family be helped.
‘We have a lot of needy people in our area but I chose
this family as this was an emergency that could not wait,’
said Rahlane.
Rahlane said that he would like to encourage local
business owners to get involved in the communities that
are supporting them. He commended the businesses who
got involved in making a difference for this family.
Ruth Mathebula’s family was left devastated and
confused after their sitting room and bedroom belongings
were destroyed in a fire two weeks ago. The cause of the
fire is unknown.
‘We don’t really know what happened as we were all out
of the house when the incident happened. My daughter
