HOEDSPRUIT HERALD Friday July 25, 2014 NEWS GET SET: Marathon runners ready to start their run against rhino poaching. Community taught about devastation of poaching POACHING ACT: Kruger2canyon biosphere acting out a poaching incident. THE community of Welverdiend near the Southern African Wildlife College held a successful awareness campaign last Friday against rhino poaching and its negative effects on the country and environment. The campaign that was launched in conjunction with the celebration of Mandela day started in the early morning with participants running a 10.5km marathon. The other community members and stakeholders walked from Orpen Gate to Southern Wildlife College collecting litter along the way. Mark Pon of Mpumalanga Tourist Park (MTP) urged the community members and the stakeholders to fight poaching as it is destroying the environment. ‘Fighting poaching will preserve people’s jobs as one of the negative effects is that it impacts on tourism. Tourism is an economic booster that creates work in our country,’ said Pon. The community were reminded that they can contribute to the war against rhino poaching by reporting any suspicious activities in their surroundings. Kruger2canyon biosphere taught the residents about the dangers of trusting rhino poaching syndicates. They spoke about how vulnerable unemployed people are used and killed by the rhino horn poaching syndicates. Sboniso Phakathi from the Southern African Wildlife College said that the poaching affects us all. ‘This campaign is to help us understand that is our responsibility to keep our rhinos safe. There are a lot of people who are not working because every rhino poached means a lot of people losing their jobs,’ said Phakathi. Jeremiah Mahava from South African National Park (SANParks) reminded the stakeholders that winning the hearts and minds of communities living around rhino reserves is principal to intelligence. He encouraged them to have more campaigns and to try to work more closely with their communities in this regard. During the campaign a pensioner Inah Hlongo was given food parcels that were donated by the Southern African Wildlife College and & Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve in celebration of Mandela day. The Welverdiend Youth Service that made the day possible would like to thank the stakeholders who participated on making the day a success; Mpumalanga Tourist Park, Africa Foundation, SANParks, Timbavati foundation, Southern African Wildlife College, & Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve, Singita KNP, Nourish and Kruger2canyon Biosphere.
