TV-sirkus: Goed of sleg
DIE GEMEENSKAP van Hoedspruit en
omgewing is in twee kampe verdeel oor die
verfilming van ‘n internasionale tv-reeks in
die Blydevallei.
Die bekende Survivor-reeks, Australiese
uitgawe, met die titel “I’m a celebrity - get
me out of here”, word tans by die ongerepte,
skilderagtige Swadini-waterval in die
Blydevallei bokant die Blydedam verfilm.
Na verneem word is voorbereiding en
proef-skote reeds die afgelope maand aan
die gang en word die amptelike verfilming
in Februarie en Maart voltooi. Weens baie
beteken is gewis.
Die hele Swadini is vir maande uitgeboek
en talle ander akkommodasie-plekke
ervaar ongekende besetting. Aankope by

VERDEELDHEID: Die Australiese TV-reeks, I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, word tans in die Blydevallei geskiet. Die dorp is verdeel tussen die

ekologies uiters sensitief. Die Blyderivier
word algemeen beskou as een van die
skoonste riviere in die land met relatief
min besoedeling.
Niemand weet
nie. Inwoners met wie die HERALD gesels
het, is beslis in twee klampe verdeel.
Enersyds word die ekonomiese inspuiting
en die gevolglike internasionale reklame
vir die omgewing verwelkom, andersyds is
omgewingsbewustes baie bekommerd oor die
impak op die ekologies-sensitiewe waterval
en omliggende ongerepte natuur.

Elderly man arrested for raping child
AN ELDERLY man was arrested on
Tuesday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old
child that he’s related to.
According to Hoedspruit police
spokesperson Constable Livhuwani
Mulaudzi the suspect was arrested after his
belongings were found in the child’s room
after an escape.
‘The victim sleeps alone and last
Saturday evening the victim’s brother
wanted to drink water and he went to
her room as they keep water there,’ said
Mulaudzi.
The brother tried to open the door but it
seemed stuck and when he pushed again
he saw someone jumping out the window.
The brother went inside to check on his
sister and found a man’s trousers with a
wallet inside its pocket.
He called family members to come and
see what he found in his little sister’s room.
When they opened the wallet they found
an ID belonging to the uncle of the mother
of the victim who lives in the same yard.
When they asked the victim about why
the man’s trousers and wallet were in her
room and who the person was who jumped
out through her window. The victim told
them it was her mother’s uncle, that he
often visits her room and rapes her each
time he visits since last year. The family
reported the matter to the police and a
50-year-old man is expected to appear in
court soon.
Mulaudzi said that parents must become
friends with their children so that they can
confide to them when they being abused or
face any difficulties in life.

Don’t get conned
by bogus lawyer
ACORNHOEK police are warning residents
about a fraudster who pretends to be a
lawyer and cons people out of their hard
earned money by promising to release their
relatives from jail.
According to Acornhoek police
spokesperson Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane the
unknown suspect targets families of suspects
who are in custody and promise to secure
bail for them if the family can deposit a
certain amount of cash.
‘All complaints that we have received
indicated that the money was deposited to

Shoprite money market. As a result we the
police would like to urge all residents not to
fall prey to this scam by forcing the lawyer
who wants to help to meet face to face and
possibly at the police station,’ said Nonyane.
Police also appeal to people who might
know the bogus lawyer to contact the police
as the information they will give will help
them to make an arrest.
Anyone with information can contact
Acornhoek police branch Commander
Lieutenant Colonel John Mbambo on 082

Service provider’s vehicle stolen
POLICE are hunting for suspects who
attacked and hijacked a cellphone service
provider’s emergency vehicle last Saturday
around 21:00.
According to Acornhoek police
spokesperson Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane the
employees of the cellphone provider were
deployed to go and check what was causing
problems at their aerial in Rooiboklaagte
Village.
‘They were driving a white Mazda Etude
with a trailer. The suspects appeared from
nowhere and they pointed firearms at the
two victims, demanding that they remove the
trailer and give the suspects the keys of the
car,’ said Nonyane.
The victims were then asked to lie
down before the suspects sped off in their
company’s car leaving them stranded.
Anyone with information that can help the
police make an arrest, can contact Acornhoek
police branch Commander Lieutenant
Colonel John Mbambo on 082 469 1031.

boyfriend last Friday evening.

TV-series: What residents think
THE Following post was the pic of
the week on the Hoedspruit town’s
Facebook page by Kobus Muller:
I think it’s very important to have an
outlet for people in the community to have
a place where they can say how they feel
about things. It is also interesting to see all
the different views. People usually get angry
about things they feel passionate about. A
good community is made up of many many
different kinds of people, some similar to
ourselves and some very different, what
makes it a community is learning to listen
to all the view points, if anything this page
has given me a more holistic view of the
people who make up this town. I think a good
administrator would do as little as possible,
and only intervene if absolutely necessary.
Many times on here I have been gobsmacked
by some comments, but it opens your mind,
and teaches you to accept that there are
viewpoints very very different to your own,
it forces you to adjust the way you think and
view your world”
I don’t need any more answers to my posts.
But a few members here asked very good
questions. I really hope that the sanctity of
the Blyde River Canyon and more specifically
the highly sensitive area at the Waterfall is
not lost to next generations. (more about
the sensitivity at the End of this post) Why
were we in the dark It would be sad if the
EIA was done without the knowledge of
knowledgeable people.
There is a lot of warning signs but i hope
we get answers sooner than next Friday.
Somebody this week asked about soap
and cleaning. He was promised that the
question will be asked. That is a serious
thread to the fish and plants in that area. A
proper answer from both the TV crew and
the people who gave this permit and done
the Impact assessment. I also hope that the
question be someone to see the assessment
can be honored. There is a plant there that is
endemic to that area, no where else seen in
South Africa. Profesor Braam van Wyk and
Jerry Theron, a retired herpetologist at the
Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism Agency and
for more than 15 years a Senior Staff at the
Swadini side of the Reserve, discovered it
there. According to Jerry there is fish living
in the river below the falls that are very
sensitive and originally they even restricted
day visitors to the area. Like i said during the
week there was many different mushrooms
seen on my last trip. This is according to
Jerry a very sensitive area.
Questions that need serious answers
after this information Amanda Muller The
problem is that they are ruining the site!!!
I was there yesterday and came across the
same disappointment. The little footpath
to the falls have been made into a road for
quad bikes. Lots of trees and other plants are
being planted and who knows what else they
are doing at the falls itself. These changes
we could see from the road, but we were not
allowed to go to the falls. This is a public
space, why were we not consulted? Who is

vetting the whole story and making sure they
are playing by the rules? What if they change
the place into a tourist trap after they’re
done? Someone should be answering these
questions... Santi Van Niekerk Perhaps a
good story for Elize Tempelhof at Media 24
and 50/50. This is nothing but exploitation.
The forest will be scarred forever. The story
goes on.
The commercial benefit will be dealt with
by others. My stance is clear. I would like
to save this sensitive area not to become
another Bourkes Luck where the human foot
print is indelible.
OPINION...
skoolloopbaan so pas begin het. ‘n Hele nuwe

Friends in court for beating woman
THREE men suspected of beating up a
woman appeared in Naphuno Magistrate
Court for assault with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm on Monday.
According to Hoedspruit police
spokesperson Constable Livhuwani Mulaudzi
said that the victim was beaten after she
invited her boyfriend to her place in The
Willows. ‘When the boyfriend who was
accompanied by his
two friends arrived they found the victim
with a new boyfriend,’ said Mulaudzi. The
victim started to verbally insult the suspects
and her boyfriend. They were both beating
her with a stick. The suspects, Enry Khosa
(29), Sydney Mametja (24) and Norman
Nkoane (30) were given R100 bail each
when they appeared in court. Their case
was postponed to January 30 for further
investigations.
Mother and child hit by car
A 39-year-old woman and her three year
old child were knocked down by a car last
Sunday around 20:30 in Casteel Village.
According to Acornhoek police
spokesperson Lieutenant Mpho Nonyane
the driver reported that he saw the child
crossing the road from the right side to the
left. ‘He tried to stop but it was too late and
the mother was also hit while trying to save
her child. They both were certified dead on
the scene,’ said Nonyane. Police are now
investigating a culpable homicide. Nonyane
said that parents are advised to hold their
children by hand while crossing streets or
carry the young ones in their backs to avoid
accidents on the road.

CLEAN WATER: Dayimani High School principal Ernest Hlathi shakes hand with Celia van der Merwe
of TimbavaƟ FoundaƟon aŌer handing over a water project.
Timbavati Foundation assists
schools with clean water
LEARNERS and teachers at Maakere and
Dayimani High schools and Sehlekisi
Primary School had renewed hope after the
Timbavati Foundation helped them get clean
water.
These schools will now be able to
participate in the foundation’s garden
project competitions which they failed to do
previously as they had no water.
The Timbavati Foundation assisted
Dayimani High School with a borehole fully
equipped with a motor and pump.
‘The school spent about R23 000 annually
to get water to the school and the Principal
sometimes had to send students home due
to dehydration,’ said Celia van der Merwe.
After receiving a letter from the Principal
of the school, the trustees of the Timbavati
Foundation decided to assist.
Recently Dayimani High School invited the
Timbavati Foundation staff as well as SGB
members for a midday braai to celebrate the
gift of life (water).
The principal Ernest Hlathi was full of
praise for the Foundation and asked them to
convey their gratitude to all their donors.
‘The assistance from Timbavati
Foundation has really helped us and our
learners had more time in class than before.
As a result they perform well,’ said Hlathi.
Truly water is life and when you feel
energised anything is possible, Dayimani
High School managed to obtain a 100%
matric pass rate for 2014.
Of all the registered 72 matric learners
in 2014, 42 qualify to study for a bachelor’s
degree, 24 for diplomas and six for
certificates. Well done to the learners and the
foundation for assisting the school.

Bulls vs Cheetahs in Polokwane
RUGBY fans are once again in for a treat, as
the Vodacom Bulls today announced that
they will be taking on the Toyota Cheetahs

Peter Mokaba Stadium.
With kick off set for 17:00 on January

encounter between these two rugby giants.
Both teams will be looking to assert a bit of
early dominance over their rivals, and will
no doubt be looking to send a positive preseason message to their fans.
The Vodacom Bulls will take to the
impressive 45 000-seater World Cup
stadium for the fourth consecutive year.
This fixture forms part of a partnership
between the Blue Bulls Company (BBCo) and
the Polokwane Municipality which is aimed

Barend van Graan, CEO of the Blue Bulls
Company, said that the Polokwane fixture

pre-season preparations:
“It’s always a real pleasure for our team to
play in Polokwane.
The professionalism shown by the
organsing committee is always of the highest
standard, and reception we recieve from
the fans is also something that our players
and management really look forward to. It’s
also a great spectacle for all the rugby fans
in Polokwane, as most of them are not able
to travel to Pretoria or Bloemfontein for
Vodacom Super Rugby games.
But most importantly, we are honoured
that by participating in this match, we can
assist in enabling young learners to further
their education.”
Polokwane Executive Mayor, Cllr Thembi
Nkadimeng said besides entertainment for
the fans, “the game presents a welcome
opportunity for the municipality to raise
funds for tertiary students who will in future
assist it in realising the 2030 Smart City
