Like nowhere else
Welcome

Hannover just for you
Shall we meet under the tail? And later go on to the “Glocke” (the
“Bell”), where we can have a good time? - People visiting Hannover may
be puzzled by some of the odd expressions used here. But don’t worry:
it’s all quite harmless. When people say “under the tail”, they mean by
the statue of King Ernest Augustus on his horse right outside the Central Station, which is one of Hannover’s most popular meeting points.
And if they say they’re going to the “Glocke”, they mean the Café Glocksee in the Linden district of the city. Close by in the same district you will
also find lively Limmerstrasse, a marvellous street to stroll down if you
want to see and be seen. Relaxed, tolerant, never getting worked up
about things: these are perhaps the best terms to describe what life is
like in this city, and how it feels to live here. It’s an attractive place,
where life is well worth living.
The City of Hannover embraces 51 districts – and every one of them has
a “scene” with a charm of its own and its own particular highlights and
plus points. Every visitor would therefore be well advised to go and
discover List, Linden, Nordstadt and the other districts.

[Shopping] KRÖPCKE // Bahnhofstrasse {Under the tail} Old Town //
[Beginenturm] HOHES UFER // Niki-de-Saint-Phalle-Promenade //
Steintor [Strolling and promenading] NANAS {Ernst-August-Galerie} //
Market Hall [Meeting people, culinary treats] Flea market [Red Thread]
Right in the middle of things!
If you want to go shopping in Hannover, you can start as soon as
you come out of the Central Station onto Ernst August Platz. On
the right is the Ernst August Galerie; down the steps, one floor
below ground level, is the Niki de Saint Phalle Promenade with
Bahnhofstrasse above it - all inviting places for the shopper, the
stroller and the gourmet. And if you go on straight ahead, you
will come to Kröpcke.
A little tip: if you want to meet someone here at the heart of
Hannover, arrange to do so at the Kröpcke Clock; then you will
be sure not to miss them, however full the square may be. The
most important shopping streets meet here, you can stroll down
Georgstrasse to Steintor. Time for a coffee break? In the little
streets of the Old Town you will find not only some delightful
boutiques, but also lots of cafés and cosy pubs.
Under the tail
What would Ernest Augustus, King
of Hannover, have said if he had
been able to foresee this? It is not
the image of his royal personage
but his horse that provides a popular meeting point in Hannover
today. If someone says “under the
tail”, they are proposing to meet at
the equestrian statue directly
outside the Central Station.
Market Hall
The Market Hall, known as the
“Belly of Hannover”, is popular
above all for its vast diversity of
fresh food and exclusive interna
tional delicacies; but it is also a
place that takes such a hold on
its visitors that they spend longer
there than they had meant to,
enjoying a coffee or a prosecco.
A place to see and be seen.
Old Town Flea Market
“Pre-owned” objects, junk, art
and kitsch! Every Saturday, the
bargain-hunters and golddiggers descend on Germany’s
oldest flea market, located on
the “Hohen Ufer”, the High Bank
of the River Leine between
Schlossstrasse and Goethestrasse.
A traditional atmosphere is cultivated; you will look in vain for
mass produced goods.
Linden
[Warme Brüder] Limmerstrasse {Ihme Centre} // Béi Chéz Heinz
Zur Bettfedernfabrik [Schwarzer Bär] Am Küchengarten //
{Fährmannsfest} Mephisto // Dornröschenbrücke // [Café K]
Von-Alten-Garten
No, it’s not a district of Hannover ...
… on the contrary, Hannover is an appendage of Linden, everybody in Linden knows that. To the right and left of Limmerstrasse
and around the Market Place there is an abundance of teeming,
colourful life. Students, university lecturers, eccentrics, people
for whom life is an art form, they all practically live on the
streets. This is a district to go out and to party in! Pubs, cafés,
kiosks and restaurants are to be found on every corner; the
extent of the party triangle is marked by the venues Béi Chéz
Heinz, Café Glocksee and the Faust Culture Centre.
And Linden is a real insider’s tip for shoppers: there are lots of
little boutiques and shops offering trendy styles and accessories
such as are only to be found in such a laid-back “scene” area.

1
Lindener Marktplatz
This is the place to meet on
Saturdays: no-one in Linden
would think of giving the weekly
market a miss. All around the
Night Watchman Fountain you
will find strollers deep in philosophical conversation – which is
not to be wondered at, since the
philosopher Hannah Arendt was
born at No. 2 Lindener Marktplatz.
2
Apollo Cinema
This was one of Germany’s first
art cinemas. Even today, the
“Studio for Kinematic Art” at No.
50 Limmerstrasse can boast a
loyal following for its thrilling
mix of recent, classic and quality
films. In addition, Hannover
entertainer Desimo regularly
presents live programmes of
great acts by artistes.
3
Lindener Berg
Linden’s “mountain” may rise a
mere 35 metres above the “Linden baseline”; but as everybody
knows, size is not everything, and
it’s well worth climbing up to the
top. There you can relax in the
beer garden, stroll through the
old cemetery or the allotments,
and enjoy a breathtaking view
from the Observatory or a concert
in the legendary Jazz Club.

Linden
Café K
4
Egestorffstr. 18, open 7 days, 10 a.m. – 1 a.m. There are people who
would pay millions for the recipe: the cheesecake is simply a dream.
But it remains a trade secret. Ralf Schnoor prefers to win his millions in
Günther Jauch’s quiz show on the telly. And enjoys putting on regular
Table Quizzes with his guests.
5
Bei Jacqueline
Limmerstr. 7, open Mon. – Fri. 7
a.m. – 8 p.m., Sat. 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Another place in Linden that is
like a living room open to the
public. This little Italian bistro is a
cult place where insiders meet. A
delicious (quick) breakfast, delicious speciality coffees, delicious
pizza – yummy, yummier, yummiest!
Frioli

7
Stephanusstr. 8, in the summer
open daily 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., in the
winter Mon. – Fri. 12 noon – 7 p.m.,
Sat. 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Sun. 2 – 7 p.m.
This is no ordinary ice cream
parlour, but a place where ice
cream is made: ice specialities are
crafted by hand and with much
love from fresh organic products
and real fruit. Delicious even in
winter.
... und der böse Wolf
Heesestr. 1, open daily from
5 p.m., food until 11 p.m. The Big
Bad Wolf is noisy and full of
cigarette smoke and rock music,
and it’s a very special place. The
motto is “live and let live”. A
billiard table, Hannover 96 play
ing football on TV, plenty of
Linden eccentrics and possibly
the best Thai cuisine in Hannover.
Rias Baixas
8
Deisterstr. 77, open daily except
Tuesdays, 6 p.m. – 1 a.m. //
Plaza de Rosalia 2, open Mon.
– Sat. 9 a.m. – midnight, Sun. 10
a.m. – midnight. An Incredibly
wide range of delicious tapas;
this is the Spanish restaurant you
can get addicted to. Very personal,
very authentic and with unbelievably quick service. It’s no wonder
there are two of them in Linden.
10
Linden
Kulturzentrum Faust (Faust Culture Centre)
Zur Bettfedernfabrik 3, opening times depending on the programme,
generally open-ended. Live concerts, parties, readings, exhibitions
and much more besides take place at various locations on a single site.
The “Faust” offers thrills of a different kind every day. In summer the
“Gretchen” beer garden is a great attraction; the pizza is sensational.
9
10
Café Glocksee
Glockseestr. 35, opening times
depending on the programme,
generally open-ended. They’ve
all played here at some time or
other! Live music, still more live
music, with “in” DJ sets and gin
and tonic until the small hours.
If you arrive late, you just stay
longer. The Glocksee is known
throughout Hannover as a cult
venue.
11
Béi Chéz Heinz
Liepmannstr. 7, opening times
depending on the programme,
generally open-ended. This
legendary dive in the basement
under the swimming baths is a
must in Linden’s nightlife. Wild
parties, live music with many
thrilling bands and moderate
prices.
Centrum
12
13
Lindener Marktplatz 3, open
daily from 10 a.m., open-ended.
One of Linden’s oldest restaurants,
formerly called “Zum Holländer”,
nowadays simply “Centre”, which
says it all. This is where people
from the scene meet and stay all
night. Thursday is always the
Centrum’s “day on”. What’s that?
Come and find out – you’ll be
amazed!
Yildirim Frischmarkt
Ungerstr. / corner of Otto Wels Str.,
open Mon. – Thu. 5 a.m. – 1 a.m.,
Fri. 5 a.m. – 2 a.m., Sat. 6 a.m. –
2 a.m., Sun. 7 a.m. – 1 a.m. Calling
it a kiosk is really a gross understatement: supermarket would
be much closer to the mark. Fresh
fruit and vegetables, home-made
snacks (organic and vegan) and,
of course, very cold beer – this
kiosk is an institution in Linden.
12
Linden

The district for individualists
The 16,000 or more inhabitants
of the Nordstadt, the area of
Hannover to the north of the city
centre, are a colourful mixture of
students, young families, old
inhabitants who have become
local institutions, former house
occupiers, migrants and numerous eccentrics. Life in the area of
the city with Hannover’s Leibniz
University right next door is
relaxed, tolerant and peaceful.
Here, the punk will carry the old
granny’s shopping home for her,
while people meet in the cafés on
Engelbosteler Damm or around
the Luther Church to chat about
world peace, or simply on a meadow in the Guelph Garden for a
picnic. In the evening you can go
to an award-winning cinema or
to one of the many “in” pubs.
Even a shopping expedition can
turn out to be a thrilling activity
in the Nordstadt, since the shops
are as individual as the people:
cool, trendy, off-beat, simply
different.
1
Lutherkirche
a Young People’s Church
Yes, it’s a church. But no, it’s not
an ordinary church, but one that
is a meeting place for young
people, with a programme devised by young people for young
people. Drama, music, bands,
workshops – this church may
look old, but it is young at heart.
Kino im Sprengel the
Sprengel Site cinema
2
House occupiers saved the buildings on the legendary Sprengel
Site from demolition; now it is a
Mecca for, among others, filmmakers and film lovers. Unconventional films, many classics
and documentaries – the cinema
programme is out of the ordinary,
and determined to keep itself
advertisement-free.
Leibniz University
with George Garden
3
In summer it’s the most popular
meeting place in the Nordstadt.
Not only do many of the 22,000
students spend balmy summer
nights in the George Garden and
behind the University; many
young families enjoy the relaxed
atmosphere there as well.

too, and especially, are the burgers. And of course, the prices are
moderate across the board.
Birthday and family parties are

Nordstadt nights are long...
The Nordstadt is renowned for its density of pubs. People of every taste
will find a place that suits them in the warren of side-streets; students,
night owls and the people from next door quickly get into conversation
with each other. And then they go on to the nearest music venue just
round the corner. Even in the Luther Church, there are concerts all the
time.

Eilenriede [recreation & relaxation] // Lister Platz // Lister Meile
[shopping, strolling & promenading] PELIKAN QUARTER // PAVILLON
{culture & concerts} // WEDEKINDPLATZ // Theater in der List e.V. //
PLAYGROUNDS & CAFÉS // {Podbi} Art Nouveau // child-friendly
Charming and family-friendly
Lister Meile and Podbielskistrasse are the two main arteries of
the List district. Many families value highly the quieter, more
middle-class atmosphere and the numerous shopping opportunities to be found both on the main streets and in the side
streets. People meet for a glass of good wine, go to the theatre
(Theater in der List e.V.), or attend a reading or a concert in the
Pavillon. Shopping is the main topic in the List, whether on Lister
Meile or around Wedekindplatz; everywhere you go you will see
people with shopping bags full to bursting. And because shopping can be very tiring, people in this part of the city have to
keep themselves fit; many going jogging in the Eilenriede in the
early morning.
Eilenriede
1
Europe‘s biggest urban forest is
to be found at the heart of Hannover. On Sundays, half the city
goes looking for recreation in this
green oasis. Whether it’s jogging,
in-line skating or simply walking,
there is plenty of room in the
1,600 acres of the Eilenriede. And
if you’re lucky, you may see deer,
foxes or bats.
2
Lister Meile
This is one of the most popular
boulevards, with lots of shops
and cafés. You can relax and
enjoy yourself in one of the ice
cream parlours or in an Italian
bistro, surrounded by the
district’s wonderful art nouveau
façades. The Lister Meile Fest
and the Christmas Market are
particular annual highlights.
Jugendstil (art nouveau)
The charming, well-preserved
façades of the older buildings, for
example around Wedekindplatz,
are characteristic of this part of
Hannover. And Wedekindplatz,
by the way, is the lively focal
point of the List, with many
small, exciting boutiques, restaurants and cafés.

MASCHSEE LAKE [jogging, pedalo, walking & promenading //
Stephansplatz [weekly market] // Marienstrasse & Sallstrasse [cult
kiosk] // Bult // SPRENGEL MUSEUM (Kurt Schwitters) // Gilde Brewery
// Aegi [Hildesheimer Strasse] // EISFABRIK {Art & Theatre}
A bit of Eilenriede and a lot of lake ...
… those are the things that make the Südstadt, the area of Hannover to
the south of the city centre, such a great place to live. The Eilenriede
city forest and the Maschsee Lake are wonderful recreational areas, yet
it only takes five minutes to reach the city centre via Marienstrasse or
Hildesheimer Strasse. It is rumoured that single people in particular
prefer this part of the city, perhaps because jogging round the Maschsee Lake provides such marvellous opportunities for flirting…
More and more students have settled in the Südstadt in recent times,
even though it is a comparatively quiet part of the city. And what else is
there to say about it? The Eisfabrik (“Ice Factory”) offers drama, art and
culture, and Hannover’s biggest weekly market takes place on Stephansplatz every Friday.
1
Maschsee Lake
190 acres of recreational area!
Relaxation, walks, restaurants,
jogging, parties – the Maschsee
Lake means going on holiday
right next door. Many people
enjoy pursuing a variety of water
sports here on sunny days. The
favourite meeting place is by the
Torchbearer on the North Shore.
Eisfabrik
2
Artists’ studios, practice rooms,
exhibitions, drama: the Eisfabrik
(“Ice Factory”) has been the art
and culture centre of the district
since the late 1970s. The independent theatre Commedia
Futura with its out-of-theordinary drama and dance
drama productions is a real
draw for audiences.
Weekly market
3
The weekly market that takes
place on Stephansplatz every
Friday has been the culinary
heart of the Südstadt since as
long ago as 1919. Many products
come straight from the surrounding region; organic produce is on
offer too. And while their parents
are shopping, children can romp
to their hearts’ content in the
nearby playground.

Events
Festivals and celebrations in Hannover
It’s almost impossible to count the opportunities Hannover offers for
exuberant celebrations. Festivities great and small, open-air events,
live music, unusual kinds of festival – the calendar of events is bursting
at the seams.
Marksmen’s Fair
A tradition going back almost 500
years! The biggest Marksmen’s
Fair in the world, with over 250
showmen and 1½ million visitors,
is the annual focus of attention
for ten whole days, and not only
for marksmen and markswomen!
Parties, live music, fairground rides
– there’s always an excuse for
another round of Hannover’s
national drink “lüttje lage”. The
next time: 4 – 13 July 2014.
MASALA Festival
The World Beat Festival has
been firmly entered in the diaries
of all fans of quality world music
since 1995. Masala means mixture, and this is a place where
the cultures of the most diverse
nations meet to celebrate the
idea of international (musical)
understanding together. Coming
round again from 16 – 27 July 2014.
Fährmannsfest
The “Ferryman’s Festival” is the
biggest alternative open-air
music festival in Hannover, and a
summer fest for a whole district
of the city, equally attractive to
young and old. Today, this “little
Woodstock” offers not only live
music, but also a diverse cultural
programme and special events
for children. Colourful and peaceful, quiet and loud.
Maschsee Lake Festival
One of the biggest events in northern Germany, with more than
2 million visitors! A place to celebrate, flirt, stroll and dine: for
three whole weeks this maritime summer festival offers concert
highlights, sporting events on the water, open-air dance evenings, performances by artistes and a host of culinary treats. On
the four music stages round about the lake one concert highlight
follows another, with local, national and international artists.
Enjoy the summer evenings, relax on secluded terraces with a
view out over the lake and simply enjoy yourself – the Maschsee
Lake Festival offers that incomparable feeling of being on holiday! For the latest information visit www.maschseefest.de.

Theatres, museums, art galleries
Theatres
Classic drama, multimedia productions, contemporary
dance drama, theatre by and for children and young people – Hannover’s theatre scene is very diverse and of a
very high standard. Commedia Futura, Compagnie Fredewess, the Theater fensterzurstadt, the puppet theatre
Theatrio Figurentheaterhaus, the Theaterwerkstatt
Hannover, the Theater in der List and many others offer
a multitude of thrilling productions.
Theatres
Museums and
art galleries
kestnergesellschaft
One of the biggest German arts
associations. Contemporary
artists of international importance exhibit their very latest
works here – the “House in Mud”
project by the Spanish artist
Santiago Sierra has already
almost become a legend.
Sprengel Museum Hannover
The Sprengel Museum with its comprehensive collection is one
of the most celebrated galleries in the world for the art of the
20th and 21st centuries. Works of German Expressionism, French
Cubism and abstract art, and of tendencies such as Minimal Art,
Nouveau Réalisme, Informalism, Conceptual Art and PostMinimal Art – it would scarcely be possible to envisage a more
comprehensive overview. In addition to the Kurt Schwitters
Archive, the gallery houses impressive groups of works by,
among others, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee und Emil Nolde, the Niki
de Saint Phalle Donation, and rooms designed by artists – outstanding among which are the “Abstract Cabinet” of El Lissitzky
and a reconstruction of Kurt Schwitters’s “Merzbau”.
Kunstverein
The Kunstverein (Arts Association) presents the latest developments in contemporary art in
some four to six individual and
group exhibitions a year. In addition, every other year the “Autumn Exhibition” turns the spotlight on the art scene in Lower
Saxony and Bremen.

Getting about
üstra
The buses and trams of the Hannover transport undertaking üstra will
get you from A to B quickly and in an environmentally friendly manner.
If you simply want to get from one part of Hannover to another as
easily as possible, the üstra services will enable you to do so reliably at
intervals of just a few minutes.
Quicar
This is the best way of getting
around the town by car easily,
simply and economically. Register via the internet, and then
simply go to the nearest Quicar
shop with your driving licence
and identity document, book the
type of car you need, and you’re
off. There are already more than
50 stations in Hannover, with 250
vehicles available.
Tricycle taxi
If you want to go sightseeing in a
particularly relaxed manner, the
best way is by tricycle taxi. In the
summer you will find them standing outside the train station,
waiting to pick you up – and the
driver will be thoroughly well
informed about all the highlights
to the left and to the right of your
route.
Segway
Go on a thoroughly relaxed tour
of discovery through the city at
speeds of up to 20 kph: you can,
for example, explore the “Red
Thread” or the Old Town with a
Steward of the Marksmen’s Fair
acting as a guide, who will tell
you some absorbing tales about
Hannover. Operating a Segway is
child’s play.
Bicycle hire
Don‘t worry: Hannover has hardly
any hills, so it’s certainly a great
idea to explore the city by bike.
Whether you go to the Bike Park
next to the Central Train Station,
or to “Nextbike”: whichever you
choose, it’s easy to get hold of a
bike. Oh, and yes: there are also
tandems available at “Hannovers
FahrradScout”.

Tips for trips
An introduction to Hannover Region
Hannover Region, which by the way also includes the City of Hannover
itself, offers a large number of exciting destinations for excursions.
Sport, culture, experience, adventure – the great variety of opportunities for weekend trips attracts many families as well. “Recreation close
at hand” is more than just a slogan.
The Deister Hills
Go cycling or rambling; relax and
discover new things. Only about
30 km to the south-west of
Hannover there is a green paradise waiting to be discovered: the
Deister Hills. Old manor houses,
country estates, village churches,
half-timbered buildings, parks,
museums – nature and culture
everywhere!
Blauer See
Clear, clean water and a wonderful sandy beach, a water ski
cableway and a 65-metre-long
giant slide – the Blauer See
(“Blue Lake”) in Garbsen is the
attraction for families and water
sports enthusiasts in the summer. The beginners’ and advanced wakeboard courses are absolute hits!
Lake Steinhude, kitesurfing
This is north-western Germany’s biggest lake, with the island
fortress of Wilhelmstein and Steinhude bathing island, as well
as a marvellous sandy beach. And it is, of course, the leading
address for water sport in Hannover Region. Swimming, sailing,
surfing, rowing, canoeing, pedalo boating and above all kiteboarding. Over the last few years Lake Steinhude has developed
into a centre for all kitesurfing fans. And if you feel you need a
break, you can slope off to the Insect Museum or the Lake Steinhude Nature Park Centre, or enjoy the abundance of delicious
things to eat all around the lake.
Rivers Ihme and Leine
The ultimate trend in water
sport: stand-up paddle surfing is
fitness training for the whole
body with a high fun factor.
Simply get on the board and
paddle away. For example on the
River Ihme, the River Leine or the
Maschsee Lake.
54
Tips for trips
Horseracing & iPlayGolf
High-performance sport in Langenhagen! From April until October the
racecourse offers a blend of high society gala and popular fairground
atmosphere as the “gees” go all out for a “win” or a “place”. And on the
same site you will find “iPlayGolf”, an opportunity to play golf without
expensive club membership or complicated restrictions on admission.
A place to enjoy relaxed leisure time with colleagues, friends or family.
Aerial adventure parks
There are no less than three
venues in Hannover Region for
people who like to climb up to
heights. At “PirateRock” in Isernhagen, a pirate ship is waiting for
climbers to conquer it. “Time to
team” in Springe goes up to a
height of 21 m. And in the Lake
Steinhude Adventure Park, the
SeaTree offers the ultimate in fun
on the high ropes for both beginners and advanced practitioners.
The Bison Paddock
Not only bison but also wolves,
bears, lynxes, deer and wild
horses: in the Bison Paddock you
can experience more than 100
different species of wild animal in
their natural habitats and yet
almost within touching distance
all the year round. The Falconry
offers breathtaking flight displays: thrills for all the family!
Hannover Adventure Zoo
A river trip on the Zambezi, polar
bears almost at your fingertips in
Yukon Bay, kangaroos in the
Australian Outback and tigers,
leopards and elephants in the
Jungle Palace: Hannover’s classic
excursion destination consists of
a series of thematic worlds that
fascinate all visitors. The latest
attraction is “Kibongo”, a truly
naturalistic realm for the anthro-
poid apes, with a stream running
through it and imposing cliffs for
them to climb on. Then there is
the village of Mollywoop with its
mice, sheep and goats; and when
the farmer feeds the pigs at
Meyer’s Farm, the eyes of all –
yes, really all – the watching
children shine. Why can’t the
weekend last a whole week?
56

There are an enormous number of hotels available in Hannover: if you
plan your visit a bit in advance, you can save ready cash on your reservation. In addition, there are numerous ways of finding private accommodation. You can also stay the night cheaply at one of the youth
hostels. Or if you prefer to be a bit more trendy, you can explore the
couchsurfing scene with just a few mouse clicks.

Hotel Avalon
The Avalon in the List district is a
typical example of the many
out-of-the-ordinary hotels that
the city has to offer. The rooms in
the art nouveau house close to
the Eilenriede city forest each
have a style quite of their own.
A yoga room, a sauna and a
wellness and massage room
round things off.
