since 1883. For over 100
years, Charbonnet has provided the people of New Orleans with burials, cremations and limousine services,
as well as weddings and insurance. The addition of the
second site will allow the funeral home to provide these
much needed services to St.
Bernard.
Louis Charbonnet, owner, recognized the need for
another funeral home in St.
Bernard a while back, he said.
“We’ve been looking at
the need for another funeral
home since Katrina,” said
Charbonnet, adding, “There’s
only one other funeral home
and we’re offering a different
choice.”
Members of the local
church community, including pastors, priests and ministers from churches around
the Parish, were there to
show support as members of
the Chamber of Commerce
officially opened the business
to the public.
Charbonnet Family Services will provide residents
with a new option with competitive prices and facilities, said Charbonnet. “It’s a
welcome addition to the local business community of
St. Bernard. We’re a familyowned business. We want to
bring the same services we
have been bringing to the
people of New Orleans for
over 132 years to the people
of St. Bernard,” he said.
Charbonnet encourages
residents to come to the new
location at 4917 E. Judge Per-

their facilities and prices, he

Historic Marker Dedication
Held at De La Ronde Ruins
Officials from St. Bernard Parish
Government, Chalmette Refining and
the Daughters of the British Empire
gathered on the site of the former De
La Ronde Plantation to dedicate the
newest historic marker in St. Bernard.
“I appreciate the hard work members of my administration have invested in this project making these
markers a reality,” said Parish President David Peralta. “Our historian Bill
Hyland wrote the text of the marker,
Michael Bayham worked on identifying the key locations and our tourist
director Katherine Tommaseo did a
fantastic job putting the funds together to get it done prior to the upcoming
bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans,” said Peralta.
Tommaseo spearheaded the successful fundraising drive to raise the
money for five new historic markers
across St. Bernard that provide information about important events that
took place during the Battle of New
Orleans. Chalmette Refining, LLC was
the sponsor for the new De La Ronde
Plantation historic marker.
“This was a wonderful event and
I am glad we are doing more to commemorate all of the parties that were
involved in one of the most important
battles in American history and the
military engagement that changed for
the better relations between the United States and the United Kingdom,”
said Jane Caruso of the Daughters of
the British Empire. “The De La Ronde
ruins has a special place for the British as it served as a field hospital during the Battle of New Orleans, and it
was where the bodies of both General
Edward Pakenham and General Samuel Gibbs were taken after they were
killed in the Battle of New Orleans.”
Honorary British Consul to New
Orleans James Coleman spoke at the
dedication, and the event concluded
with bagpipe music and a reception
at Rocky & Carlo’s. The Daughters of
the British Empire will hold a commemoration event at the De La Ronde
Plantation ruins in honor of the British fallen during the Battle of New Orleans on the morning of Jan. 9 as part
of the state’s Battle of New Orleans
Bicentennial events.

Knights of Columbus and Operation Merry Christmas Toy Give Away
Members of Operation Merry
Christmas presented a check to
the Knights of Columbus Council #5747 for $8,750 to support
the annual toy and food giveaway program. The two organizations joined forces to continue
the tradition of a Parish wide
distribution that was started by
Operation Merry Christmas in
1985 and the Knights of Columbus has continued the tradition
after Hurricane Katrina.
The annual Christmas gift
give-away will be held Sunday,
Dec. 14 at noon at the Sigur Civic
Center Grand Ballroom, 8245
W. Judge Perez Dr., Chalmette.
All St. Bernard Children from
newborns to Age 12 are invited
to attend and pick out a toy.
A food distribution will be
made at 10 a.m. on Dec. 14. Any
family in need should contact its
church to secure a voucher to
obtain a turkey and food basket.
Chairman Cisco Gonzales
stated, “It’s that Christmas Season that ignites the Knights of
Columbus #5747 to gear up rapidly for this year’s Christmas Gift
give-away known as A Knight’s
Gift. With the support of Operation Merry Christmas, this year’s
event will be bigger than ever.”
He further commented that
his members stated, “We’re lit
up and ready to put a smile on
all children’s faces regardless of
economic stymies. We expect a
large crowd due to the blow to
the economy and rise in unemployment and we are prepared.”
Children can pick out their own
toy.
Operation Merry Christmas
Founding Member Chris Roussel, stated, “OMC is pleased that
the Knights of Columbus Organization is continuing to fulfill
our mission that was initiated in
1985; caring for those families in
need, especially during the Holiday Season.”
A Knight’s Gift — a give-away
of toys and dolls — is sponsored
by Knights of Columbus Council
#5747 Chalmette with proceeds
from the group’s Louisiana
Crawfish Festival along with the
Operation Merry Christmas Organization. The distribution in
the Grand Ballroom will include
gifts for newborns to children
age 12.

Center has issued its forecast
for this upcoming winter season. In this instance, winter is
defined as the months of December, January and February.
The forecast calls for cooler than normal temperatures
across the Gulf South, with a
high probability of being wetter than normal across all the

southern states of the U.S.
(Figure 1). These conditions
are typical of what you’d expect during an El Nino winter, though El Nino has not
yet officially arrived on the
scene.
Currently, forecasters are
estimating that we have a 65
percent chance of experiencing an El Nino this winter,
and if it does indeed emerge,
it is likely to be weak. Even if
it doesn’t, I wouldn’t be surprised if the forecast holds
anyway as El Nino-like phenomena continues to play out
— take for example our rather
mild hurricane season, which
is typical during El Ninos So
far, this has been the best
non-El Nino “El Nino-like”
year that we’ve ever had.
So, despite the forecast for
coolish temperatures, Decem- note that this forecast is for
ber has gotten out of the gate the entire three-month period
on the rather warm side, but in its totality. Only time will
tell if the forecast will hold.
