America: A Nation of
Multiple Faiths
T
ibor Rubin passed on
December 7, 2015. He was
a Jewish American hero, a recipient
of the Medal of Honor. His is a story
of survival, heroism, anti-Semitism
and a reclaiming of American values.
Born in a small town in Hungary, Tibor
survived the Austrian, Mauthausen
death camp. The Nazis murdered
the rest of his family. Tibor recalled,
“I promised the good Lord that if I
get out of here alive, I’d become a
GI Joe, to give back something.”
In 1948, he arrived as a refugee in
the United States and tried to enlist,
but was told that he needed to learn
English first. He gained entry to the
Army in 1950 and volunteered to fight
in Korea.
“When Corporal Rubin’s battalion
found itself ambushed by thousands
of Chinese troops,” President George
W. Bush stated, “the Americans’
firepower soon dwindled to a single
machine gun. The weapon was in an
exposed position and three soldiers
had already died manning it. That was
when Corporal Rubin stepped forward. He fought until his ammunition
was gone. He was badly wounded,

captured and sent to a POW camp.”
His heroism continued during his thirty
months as a North Korean prisoner. In
his obituary in the NY Times, a fellow
prisoner recounted how Tibor would
sneak out to steal food, “He shared the
food evenly among the GI’s. He also
took care of us, nursed us, carried us
to the latrine. Helping his fellow men
was the most important thing to him.”
Fellow soldiers submitted multiple
affidavits detailing Corporal Rubin’s
deeds, but the Sergeant responsible
for filing a commendation, threw away
those reports. This was the case for
many Jewish soldiers. In 2002, Congress passed the Leonard Kravitz
Jewish War Veterans Act, named for
a soldier killed in an act of heroism
that had been denied recognition
due to anti-Semitism. President Bush
asked for a review of the records of
137 Jewish veterans, which brought
Tibor Rubin’s to his attention and
the subsequent awarding to him the
Presidential Medal of Honor. Tibor
Rubin was friends with congregants
and attended several of our Shabbat
services. I also visited with him and
his son and daughter in Long Beach
when Tibor was stricken by a stroke.
It was an honor to know this giant of a
man. His courage and care for others
defines the best of who we are as a
people.
As I write these words, another
image of service to country comes
to mind. During the Iraq War, Fareed
Zakaria, the CNN news analyst,
interviewed General Colin Powell.
The previous week, General Powell
had spoken at the grave of a Muslim
soldier killed in battle. His gravestone was marked by a crescent, as
a six-pointed star would mark that
of a Jewish soldier. General Powell
spoke of how America is the home of
Muslims, too, who serve our country
valiantly and pay the highest price.
Fareed Zakaria is a Muslim born in
India. He had tears in his eyes as
he spoke of how important General
Powell’s message was for his own
children.
As a nation of multiple faiths and
as members of a minority faith, we
have the opportunity to learn about
and support each other's communities. I have invited an important
Muslim leader in our community and
my friend, Imam Siddiqui, to share a
public conversation at CBI at 1pm on
Saturday, February 6th. Imam Siddiqui was born in India, educated for
the clergy in Saudi Arabia, England,
and in the United States, where he
earned a doctorate from Harvard
Divinity School.
On September 11, 2001, Imam
Siddiqui was in Washington, DC
along with other Muslim leaders to
meet with President Bush. After the
tragedy of the attack on our homeland,
that meeting was postponed and
instead President Bush organized
an interfaith gathering at the National
Cathedral on September 14th. The
Reverend Billy Graham preached.
Prayers were recited in English,
Hebrew, and Arabic. Imam Siddiqui
represented the American Muslim
community, sharing his prayer of consolation for our collective loss. When
President Bush met with the Muslim
leaders a few days later he said to
them, as Imam Siddiqui recounted
to me, “When a person shoots at an
abortion clinic, we do not say that this
was a Christian-hate crime. Likewise,
we cannot condemn Islam for what
some Muslims have done.”Imam Siddiqui’s mosque in Garden Grove is the
oldest and largest in Orange County.
He has served congregants from over
35 countries for over thirty years. He
also teaches at Chapman University
and speaks regularly at UCLA. Please

about Islam in America and how we
can support another minority community in our great country. A

Bar Mitzvah of Steven Levine
January 9, 2016 (28 Tevet)
Steven attends Las Flores Middle School in Las Flores, and is in the GATE program. Steven
enjoys playing Flag Football and this fall their team made it in the second place division. His
hobbies are skiing in Mammoth, playing XBOX , reading and Airsofting with his friends. Steven's
ongoing Mitzvah project involves collecting DVDs for KidsFlicks.org. This organization collects
G, PG, and PG13 movies and distributes them to hospitals with pediatric wards to create a
movie library for sick children. He will be sharing this special day with his family and friends.
Bar Mitzvah of Andrew Katz
January 16, 2016 (6 Shevat)
Andrew is in the 7th grade at Sierra Vista Middle School in Irvine. He enjoys all sports and
loves to dance. He is a talented artist and plays the trumpet in his school band. He is active
in USY and loves hanging out with his friends. Andrew has spent the last three years collecting
and recycling bottles and cans and using that money to pay for food that is provided to Isaiah
House in Santa Ana. During that time he has also cooked for and fed homeless people each
Friday. Andrew has earned two Presidential Volunteer Service Awards and is working toward
earning his third.
Bat Mitzvah of Natalya Levine
January 30, 2016 (20 Shevat)
Natalya began her Jewish education at the CBI Child Development Center when she was
21 months old and where she made some of her closest friends. She is currently very proud
to be a 7th grader at Cerro Villa Middle School in Villa Park. She’s worked extremely hard to
maintain a 3.8 GPA which will allow her to become a member of the Honor Society in January.
Natalya also showed her tremendous school spirit by becoming the top 7th grade seller in
the school’s fall fundraiser. Natalya loves cheer and tumbling, swimming, film making, arts &
crafts, and being with her friends. Natalya volunteered with other teens at the Oak Canyon
Nature Center for her Mitzvah Project where she helped to clean up the park and museum.
Natalya is thrilled to have her relatives and friends from around the US join with the CBI Community in helping her
celebrate her coming of age in the Jewish Community.
Bat Mitzvah of Isabella Szabo
March 26, 2016 (16 Adar)
Isabella is an honors student at Tarbut V'Torah. She is also a dancer at West Coast School of
the Arts. She studies ballet and jazz dance and competes as part of the West Coast Dance
Club. She is also an accomplished singer and pianist. She has recently competed in the
National Association of Teachers of Singing vocal competition. Isabella has worked very hard
to raise money for Mercy House-- a local organization that helps homeless individuals and
families find homes and resources to end their cycle of homelessness. She recently collected
an SUV full of new household goods for homeless families moving into new housing. She
also set up a lemonade stand to collect money for Mercy House.

SA/TO (Social Action/ Tikkun Olam) project! A study/recreational area will be
established in a homeless shelter in Orange County with these funds. USY board
members are currently talking with different shelters for a suitable site. Recycling
will continue; the proceeds will now be channeled for other proposed SA/TO
projects. Stay tuned for details and keep bringing your recycling! A
