Passover is a holiday rich in Easter is
symbolism as Jews worldwide
commemorate and celebrate their
deliverance from bondage in Egypt
centuries ago. Jewish tradition
instructs Jews to observe the Passover experience as if they themselves were the ones liberated. As
we look to the future, we also must
constantly keep in mind the past.
a Christian festival
and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the
third day after his crucifixion at
Calvary as described in the New
Testament. Easter is the culmination of the Passion of Christ,
preceded by Lent, a forty-day
period of fasting, prayer, and
penance.
Queens Borough President Melinda Katz spoke with the board of directors of New York Women in Law Enforcement
(NYWLE), a group representing female law enforcement officers from across New York State, during a breakfast
meeting in Long Island City on Friday, April 11. NYWLE held its mid-year board of directors meeting in Queens
on April 10 and 11. The Borough President and the group discussed the challenges police officers face when
protecting a diverse community like Queens and talked about the challenges faced by women who are raising young
children while also holding important positions in the public sector. The NYPD is represented on NYWLE’s board
of directors by Assistant Chief Diana Pizzuti, commander of Patrol Borough Queens North (to the right of Borough
President Katz) and Chief Joanne Jaffe (fourth from l.), commander of the NYPD’s Community Affairs Bureau.
Crowley Celebrates 50th Anniversary of
the New York World’s Fair with
House Resolution
Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens,
the Bronx), Vice Chair of the
Democratic Caucus, announced
the introduction of H. Res. 552,
a resolution commemorating the
50th anniversary of the 1964 New
York World’s Fair and recognizing
its lasting legacy in not only technology, industry and entertainment, but in the hearts and minds
of Americans.
“The 1964 World’s Fair is a
source of pride for the people of
Queens and throughout the City
of New York,” said Rep. Crowley.
“That’s why I am introducing a
resolution that honors the legacy
of a key moment in our country’s
history. With its themes of peace
and progress, the fair reflected our
nation’s diversity, showcased the
very best in American ingenuity
and lifted up our country during
a tumultuous time.”
The fair opened on April 22,
1964 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and was attended by more
than 51 million people. Leaving
behind key landmarks such as the
Unisphere and New York State

One of the most beloved
attractions in the history of Disney Parks, “it’s a small world”
is featured at all five Disney
Resorts around the world. The
original attraction premiered at
the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing
Meadows Corona Park, Corona
Heights, Queens New York, created by Walt Disney himself
and WED Enterprises, which
eventually became Walt Disney
Imagineering (the creative masters behind Disney theme parks
and attractions).
The attraction features a gentle boat ride through a Lilliputian
land populated by colorfully
dressed Audio-Animatronics
dolls. They represent children
from many regions of the world,
all singing a song about universal harmony. A team of WED artistic geniuses, including Disney
Legends designer Mary Blair
and costumer Alice Davis, created the attraction’s now iconic
style.
In 1963, Walt Disney was
asked to create an exhibit for
the 1964 World’s Fair to salute
UNICEF and children around
the world. With Walt’s blessing,
Marc Davis, one of the original
Disney animators, desig ned
the boat ride attraction through
the regions and countries of
the world. The first version of
“it’s a small world” entertained
and thrilled more than 10 million visitors in New York from
1964-65. In 1966, after some
major enhancements, including
an enlargement of approximately
33 percent, the attraction found
a permanent home at Disneyland
in California.
In the attraction, hundreds of
dolls “sing” the familiar song,
“It’s a Small World,” in five
lang uages (English, Italian,
Japanese, Spanish and Swedish). Academy Award®-winning
composers Richard M. Sherman
and Robert B. Sherman, who
won two Oscars® for their work
on Disney’s feature film “Mary
Poppins,” were asked by Walt
Disney to create a simple, yet
catchy piece that could be sung
in many different languages
while guests traveled by boat
through the attraction. The resulting song, “It’s a Small World
(After All),” became one of the
most well known and happiest of
all Disney tunes.
Crowley, Meng on Reinstatement of
Queens UPS Workers
Reps. Joe Crowley (NY-14) and
Grace Meng (NY-6) released the
statement below in response to the
agreement reached by UPS and
Teamsters Local 804 to reinstate
the workers dismissed by UPS
last week:
“We are very pleased that UPS
and Teamsters Local 804 were able
to come to an agreement that allows
all 250 workers at its Maspeth facility to keep their jobs. Last week,
we relayed our serious concerns in
a letter to UPS and advocated for
a solution to ensure these workers
not lose their jobs. We’re glad they
took our concerns into account and
heeded that request.”

With last combat troops leaving

Schumer Calls on Dept. of
Defense to Work With New York
City to Host ‘Canyon of Heroes’
Welcome Home Celebration for
Iraq & Afghanistan Vets; These
Post 9/11 Conflicts Had Tragic
Start in NYC & Newest Heroes
Should Be Honored Here.
President Has Stated Combat
Operations in Afghanistan Will
Be Completed By End of 2014 &
Iraq War Officially Ended in 2011,
Yet No Traditional NYC Welcome
Home Parade Has Been Planned –
Schumer Kicks off Campaign For
Parade Down Broadway
Schumer: The Time Is Now
to Stake NY’s Claim & Begin
Planning A Hero’s Welcome for
our Soldiers in the War on Terror.
U.S. Senator Charles E.
Schumer, along with local veteran
leaders, launched his campaign
to have the first welcome home
parade for America’s post 9/11
troops in New York City. Specifically, he urged the Department of
Defense (DoD) to work with the
city of New York to begin planning such a critical event for our
returning troops from Iraq and
Afghanistan. Throughout history,
the United States has held a parade in New York City for troops
returning home from war, but one
has yet to be planned for Iraq or
Afghanistan veterans. With the
combat mission in Afghanistan
winding down by the end of 2014,
and the Iraq war having officially
ended in 2011, Schumer today
said that it is the time to begin
planning a welcome home parade
so that these heroes do not have
to wait any longer for this honor.
DoD’s approval and involvement
in this first-ever welcome home
parade for post-9/11 soldiers and
vets in New York City could mean
involvement of prominent mili-
tary officials, joint military color
guards, military bands, flyovers
and more.
Schumer today launched a
campaign to have the official
post-9/11 welcome home parade
in New York City. Schumer called
on the DoD to work with the city
of New York in planning a parade for veterans who served in
Iraq and Afghanistan post-9/11.
DoD decides whether organizer
requests for parades can have
DoD participation. In 2012, the
Pentagon said that it was too
early for a NYC parade because
the Afghanistan mission was not
nearing completion. With their
involvement, DoD would provide joint military color guards,
military bands, troop formations, equipments and flyovers.
Schumer explained that in years
past we have honored our veterans
and with the war in Afghanistan
winding down, now is the time to
start planning a post-9/11 parade.

years of working with Macy’s and
my colleagues to make this a reality, the fireworks will return to the

Bill de Blasio. “Now even more
New Yorkers will get to take part in
this extraordinary celebration,
against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge, the harbor, and our
skyline.”

Senator Avella Saves Additional Senior Center From Closure
Senator Tony Avella was joined
today by members of the North
Flushing Senior Center at College
Point at a press conference to announce crucial $100,000 funding
allocation by Senator Avella that
will allow the center to continue
to operate.
Much like the Greater Whitestone Taxpayer Civic Association
and Senior Center, the North
Flushing Senior Center at College
Point was also in imminent danger
of closing its doors by the end of
the year due to lack of funding.
Senator Avella tirelessly advocated for additional monies
to keep the center open and was
able to deliver on his promise
after joining the Independent
Democratic Conference in Febru-
ary. The much needed funding
was allocating during this year’s
Executive Budget negotiations.
Senator Avella stated, “This
funding allocation has been a top
priority for me ever since I was
elected three years ago and I am
very glad that I was able to finally
accomplish this vital goal. We
cannot allow our seniors to be left
without a center which helps them
remain active and vibrant. Some
of these senior centers have been
in operation for several decades
and it was not an option to let them
close their doors. Fortunately,
they will no longer have to think
about that for years to come.”
Ms. Betty Farone, Director of
the Senior Center, stated that, “the
College Point Senior Center is the
fun place to be on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. The members get to
participate in exercise and dance
classes with our wonderful teacher
Gail Freeman. They also play
different games of cards, bingo,
baccarat, rummy, etc. But most
of all, they enjoy the companionship of each other. For some, this
is the only place where they get
together and socialize. It gives
them a reason to get dressed and
go out to meet friends instead
of sitting around in a house and
watching TV. These centers are
so greatly needed for our seniors
who worked so hard to make this
country great. We thank Senator
Avella from the bottom of our
hearts for this funding, which is
an immense help.”
Rozic Supports Equal Pay Day Resolution
Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D,WF-Fresh Meadows) announced that the Assembly passed
a resolution declaring April 8 as
Equal Pay Day in New York State
(K.1034). April 8th marks the day
in 2014 when the average woman’s
earnings will catch up to what the
average man earned in 2013.
Assemblywoman Nily Rozic
said, “By declaring this day Equal
Pay Day, the unfairness of wage
disparity starts a conversation
about the enormous effects it has
on New York women and their
families, as well as the economy
as a whole. Implementing fair pay
policies can be done simply and
wouldn’t cause undue costs or
hardships in either the private or
public sectors.”
Earlier this year, for the second
year in a row, the Assembly passed
the Women’s Equality Act (WEA),
with pay equity being one of its 10
points. Unfortunately, the State
Senate has failed to take action on
the WEA in its entirety.
Rozic will continue to work
with advocates and community
stakeholders to ensure the passage
of the WEA in both houses of the
legislature.

DOT Heeds Senator Gianaris Call for Review of Roads
Leading to Water After Deadly Steinway Creek Crash
The Department of Transportation will heed the urgent
call of Senator Michael Gianaris
and conduct a review of safety
measures on all New York City
roads leading to creeks, announced DOT Commissioner
Polly Trottenberg, according to
news reports. Following a crash
that took the lives of four young
Queens residents after their car
f lipped into Steinway Creek
(also known as Luyster Creek),
Senator Michael Gianaris, who
himself lives a mere five blocks
from the accident site, demanded
the DOT take steps to ensure that
similar accidents do not occur in
the future. He was pleased to see
the city take immediate action in
this case.
“Our community is still griev-
ing, but we can hopefully find
some solace in the fact that the
city is acting quickly to prevent
tragedies like this one from happening again,” said Senator Gianaris. “It is incumbent upon us to
keep our neighbors safe as they
move around our city, and I will
keep fighting for safety measures
to be implemented before the next
accident occurs, not after.”
Senator Gianaris Seeks Nominees for
Veteran’s Hall of Fame
Senator Michael Gianaris invited local residents to nominate
veterans from the community
whose service on behalf of our
nation warrants induction into the
New York State Veteran’s Hall of
Fame.
This online Hall of Fame is designed to pay tribute to New Yorkers whose gallantry in the U.S.
Armed Forces is complemented
by service to their communities.
“Each year one of the greatest
privileges I have as a member
of the New York State Senate is
to honor a member of my community who has not only served
our nation but returned home and
worked to improve the lives of our
neighbors,” said Senator Gianaris.
“Though all of us are eternally
grateful to our nation’s veterans,
the Veteran’s Hall of Fame allows
us to say a special thank you,
and I urge anyone with a veteran
in mind to come forward with a
nomination.”
The Senate will honor a distinguished veteran from western
Queens, as well as others from
throughout the state at a May 20th
ceremony at the State Capitol,
where each honoree’s photograph
and biography will become part of
a special exhibit proclaiming the
contributions of these exemplary
New Yorkers.
Last year Senator Gianaris had
the pleasure of inducting Astoria
resident Bob Danke into the Veteran’s Hall of Fame in recognition
of his distinguished service in the
U.S. Navy. Senator Gianaris looks
forward to honoring another veteran from western Queens this May.
Nominations must be received
by Monday April 21st and should
be submitted to Senator Gianaris’ District Office via email at
Gianaris@nysenate.gov or by
mail to 31-19 Newtown Avenue
Suite 402, Astoria, NY, 11102. For
more information please call (718)
728-0960.
Rozic Calls for Volunteers to Beautify P.S. 24
A sse mbly wom a n Ni ly
Rozic (D,WF-Fresh Meadows)
announced that she is mobilizing
local volunteers to spruce up the
school playground at P.S. 24.
“A new mural would provide students and the entire P.S. 24 community with a recreational space
to foster imagination, learning,
and fun. That is why I am asking
our entire community to join me
in a volunteer effort to give P.S.
24 students a beautiful school
playground to enjoy.”
Last year, Rozic met with
Principal Debra Cassidy and
toured the school. Amongst the
many issues discussed, Rozic
committed to working with the
administration on a new mural in
the school playground. New York
Cares, a community organization
that recruits volunteers for different community projects, is set to
partner with the school.
The mural’s theme and design
is still being developed. A volunteer day will be announced in the
next couple of weeks. Volunteers
who are interested should contact
Assemblywoman Rozic’s office
at 718-820-0241 or rozicn@assembly.state.ny.us.

This past Sunday was the perfect
day to shop at Fairway due to it
being Palm Sunday and the day
before the first Passover seder. I
got there at about 10:30 a.m. and
headed for the deli counter, thinking that there would be rows of
people. Aside from the regular
ready-made products, they had a
line of ones that were Kosher for
Passover.
I had decided not to do all of
the cooking. There was the gefilte fish, matzo balls, matzo ball
soup, and roasted vegetables. I
never know what people like to
eat. I bought a piece of poached
salmon, and a pre-cooked kosher
Cornish hen.
There was a KFP aisle that had
chopped liver as well as a chicken
broth. I wanted to try Fairway’s
soup as well as making sure I had
enough broth for the matzo balls.
Demo’s were going on all over the
store. Most of them were not Fairway samples, but from companies
introducing their products. Fairway was sampling their chocolate
covered coconut macaroons (not
kosher for Passover) and picked
up a package. They do not make
their own almond macaroons but
did have a KFP boxed ilk. I personally prefer almond to coconut.
The bakery was advertising for
Easter. My idea of Easter and
food is candy. I had recently received a sampling of Ghirardelli’s
Spring line…Easter looking.
Fairway carries a variety of Ghirardelli chocolates. I will have
to compare them with their own
brand as well as Neuhaus. One
food holiday is enough in a week.
I will wait a bit.
Having returned from a trip
to the Brandywine Valley area, I
wanted to check on some cheeses
that I had. Not that they were
necessarily “local”. One was
called P’tit Basque and the other
was a mango, ginger stilton. They
had both!
Seafood. They weren’t quite
ready to demo their marinated
shrimp, so I just bought a pound to
try it out. Can’t freeze it, though…
unless I cook it first. One surprise
was their having skate fillets. In
case you’ve never had skate, it is
a cross between crab meat and
scallops. Most places sell it skate
wings on the “bone”, which is
actually cartilage.
Over at the sushi area, a sampling of their tempura shrimp was
being indulged in. I tried that as
well as getting something called a
sushi sandwich.
Another sampling nearby of
cooked Korean marinated chicken
as the butcher counter had the raw
marinated thighs for sale. Rack
of lamb was another item being
featured in their flier. A mint
jelly was available nearby.
One main course that I’m
preparing myself is Fairway’s
anti-bio free chicken, with Red
Mill’s country mix rice, and Portobello mushrooms. I marinated
the chicken in white wine, pieces
of mango and ground up a star anise, piece of fresh ginger, Bird of
Paradise (a pepper) and thyme. In
fact the Afikoman (middle matzo
that you hide) was found under
this dish, soaking up the sauce.
Over to the dairy aisle for eggs
(traditional hardboiled egg in salt
water) and milk. I see a new product near the yogurt. Quark with
pineapples. I’m game for trying
one…Didn’t like it at all. Not sure
whether it was the quark or if the
pineapples clashed with it.
Fairway branded whipped cream
in a can. They advertised it with
boxes of fresh strawberries. I
think I’ll use it with a Fairytale
Brownie instead.
There was a display at the front
area regarding another Fairway
brand. This was of liquid Castile
Soaps (not soups). Varieties included a baby soft, a black soap
with shea butter for acne, and a
peppermint.
Need I say that I bought a box of
matzo…egg matzo.

Goldfeder Announces Summer Reading Challenge 2014!
Before school is dismissed
for summer, Assemblyman Phil
Goldfeder (D-Howard Beach) has
announced his annual Summer
Reading Challenge to help keep
student minds active and encourage learning outside of the classroom. Children who participate
will be awarded an Excellence in
Reading Certificate, hand-delivered by Goldfeder when students
return to school in the fall.
“As a father of 2 young children
who both successfully completed
the summer challenge, I understand the value of continuing our
education into the summer,” said
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder.
“Reading is a great way for students of all ages to enhance their
learning throughout the summer
and by encouraging kids to keep
their minds active, the annual
Summer Reading Challenge gives
them a jumpstart on the coming
school year.”
Each year, the Assembly
partners with New York State
libraries to motivate children to
continue reading during the summer after the school year ends.
To participate in the program,
children must read by themselves
or with a partner for a minimum
of 15 minutes every day for at least
40 days throughout the months of
July and August. Children who
successfully complete the challenge will receive a New York
State Assembly Excellence in
Reading Certificate presented by
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder at
the child’s school.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge themes are “Fizz,
Boom, Read!” for children and
“Spark a Reaction” for tweens.
The initiative helps combat the
inevitable decrease in learning
– known as the “summer slide”
– that takes place when young
people are not in school during
the summer, Goldfeder noted.
“Research has shown that literacy skills develop early and are
strengthened when children read
during the summer months,” concluded Assemblyman Goldfeder.
“The challenge is a great way to

Fighting For Workers’ Rights
On April 4, Council Member
Ferreras commemorated the 46th
anniversary of the assassination
of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a march alongside
local airport workers who are
fighting for a raise to at least $10
an hour, union representation, and
benefits, including recognizing
Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a
paid holiday.
The airport workers began the
10-mile march in front JFK Airport and continued through the
major corridors of Queens, ending
in front of La Guardia Airport in
East Elmhurst - an area that is
represented by Council Member
Ferreras in the 21st Council District. This month’s march came
as a follow-up to a similar protest
the workers held in January, in
which dozens were arrested for
blocking a bridge in an act of civil
disobedience.
“As the representative of La
Guardia Airport, I am proud to
stand united with these brave
workers,” said Council Member
Ferreras. “What these workers
are asking for today is what every
New Yorker deserves - fair wages,
the ability to have their voice
heard, and access to a better quality of life for themselves and their
families. A collective bargaining
process would greatly help these
hard-working individuals negotiate for benefits like affordable
health care, job protection, and
family-sustaining wages. When
we support our workers, we support our communities. I urge the
airlines and their contractors to
come up with a holistic plan to
meet these workers’ demands.”

Queens Chef Wins Food Network Competition
Queens Chef and owner
of TomCookery--New Comfort

the championship Sunday night
on Food Network’s Cutthroat
Kitchen, a reality cooking television show hosted by celebrity
chef Alton Brown. More than 100
supporters cheered Chef Tomica
“Tom” Burke to victory at a watch
party at Penthouse808, a stunning
Long Island City rooftop venue
minutes away from the Queens
Economic Development Corporation’s Entrepreneur Space, a foodand-business incubator where
Chef Tom works.
“Cooking has always been my
first love,” said Chef Tom. “I took
a huge leap of faith when I left the
law and opened TomCookery, but
I think winning Cutthroat Kitchen
is a sign that I’m supposed to be
cooking for a living.”
Cutthroat Kitchen contestants
are given $25,000 to bid and
sabotage their way out of a variety of challenges designed to
foil their dishes. Chef Tom is a
lawyer by training but recently
left her corporate law background
to open her own catering company, TomCookery--New Comfort
Cuisine & Catering. Appearing
on the third season of the show,
Chef Tom went round-for-round
against three experienced chefs,
dominating with her interpretations of Cobb salad, enchiladas
and layer cake. Her total winnings
were $8,600.
“On Cutthroat Kitchen, just
boiling water can be a challenge.
There are so many curveballs that
come your way but you constantly
have to put out the best dish you
can given the circumstances.”
The full episode, “Chain of

Queens Sports
Prep’s Senior Takes Double
Justin Guerre shined
t wice on the t rack and
posted a double in the 11th
annual Knight-Time Invitational track and field meet
on a Saturday mor ning
and afternoon at Uniondale
High School.
A senior at St. Francis Prep
High School, Guerre certainly had college coaches
and recruiters eyeing him
during the past season in
both football and track.
He still hasn’t made up his
mind between the University of Pittsbrugh or LaSalle,
thus staying close but not
that close to home.
Guerre just nosed out Shaka Shomari, a junior at Holy
Trinity of Long Island, winning the 100 meter dash in a
time in 10.83 to 10.95, and
he did the same in the longer
200 meter invitational with
a clocking of 22.41 to 22.65.
The 200 meters was one
race or event based on time
while the shorter distance
race was trials and finals.
In scoring the meet, the
winner picked up 10 points,
as the initial six places score
for the team. Guerre’s 20
points enabled the Fresh
Meadow based Catholic
school to score 137 points
and finish in a tie for 11th
place in team standings for
28 schools, both public and
private from Westchester,
New York City and Long
Island.
This meet marked the
first major meet of the 2014
outdoor season which ends
in June.
“It feels good to win both
races,” the 5’8”, 155-pound
Guerre said after getting his
awards on the Uniondale
High School field.
Now he wants to make
the New York State meet
in June and do well in it to
climax his high school days.
Of course, every time out
on the track, in any of the
races, he wants to keep getting faster and faster, and set
some records for himself.
A two sports athlete, he
starred on both the indoor
and outdoor track squads
and proved to be a outstanding and starting running
back on the football team
in a very competitive Catholic High Schools Football
League. And he has an excellent work ethic, as well.
He’s a fast runner and
tough both on the track and
football field, and always
wants to keep improving
in both sports, in college,
if he can.
However, for his immediate goal he is hoping to
compete in the Penn Relays.
During the off season,
By Robert Elkin
meaning in July and August, Guerre will work hard
and hopefully be able to do
both sports in college.
Turning to inter scholastic
tennis, at St. Francis Prep,
the Terriers want to get back
to winning a championship
but they have to face a tough
schedule, including Fordham Prep and Iona Prep.
They got off on the right
direction by defeating Archbishop Molloy High School
of nearby Briarwood, 4-1
(three singles matches and
two doubles one), in the
season opener.
Competing in an indoor
facility because of the inclement weather prior to
the match, Anthony Santino
defeated Wesley Chin of
Molloy by a 10-1 score at
first singles to lead the way
for the Terriers. The ChinSantino match was played
at the first singles position
and the initial match of the
season.
The match was conducted
on the indoor surface of the
North Shore Racquet Club
in Bayside because of the
inclement weather before
match time.
“My serve got better (than
it was last year),” Santino
said. “We feel confident
about having a good season.”
Fantastic Food + Delightful Drinks + Nonstop
Networking + Enthusiastic Environment +
Borough’s Brightest Brains = Queens Taste 2014
The Queens Economic
Development Cor poration, the Queens Tourism
Council and lead sponsor
Fairway Market are proud
to announce that the borough’s premiere food-andnetworking event, Queens
Taste 2014, will take place
at the Sheraton LaGuardia
East Hotel, 135-20 39th
Ave. in Flushing, from 6
pm to 9 pm on Tuesday,
April 29.
The reasons to attend are
as diverse as the borough.
Foodies can expect everything from sweet to savory;
Mexican to mainstream;
and crunchy to creamy. For
example, La Fusta in Elmhurst is planning to bring
Argentine cuisine, while
Jamaica’s O Lavrador will
delight with Portuguese
paella.
Plus, clients of the
Ent re preneu r Space, a
food-and-business incubator that QEDC operates in
Long Island City, will be
on hand with their artisan specialties, including
gourmet cheesecake balls,
soul snacks and designer
meatballs.
Then there are the drinks.
LIC’s SquareWine headlines a spirits group that
includes Queens Brewery,
Punzoné Vodka and Brook-
lyn Brewery. (Yes, some
of the drink purveyors are
based outside of Queens,
but they all have a big presence in the borough.)
As part of the fun, clowns
from the Big Apple Circus
will be doing magic tricks
and giving away free red
clown noses to all attendees
(or at least those who want
one). Plus, QEDC and the
Queens Historical Society
will host a table dedicated to
showing memorabilia from
the 1939 and 1964 World’s
Fairs, both of which took
place in Flushing Meadows
Corona Park.
Finally, there’s the networking. QEDC hopes that
at least 1,000 people will
attend, and most of them
either live in Queens or do
business in the borough. So
Queens Taste 2014 provides
the perfect scene to meet
like-minded individuals,
talk shop and exchange
business cards in a friendly
atmosphere.
“I look forward to Queens
Taste all year,” said QEDC
Executive Director Seth
Bornstein. “It is so fun on so
many levels. The food. The
drinks. The people. The
venue. The celebration.”
Queens Taste 2014
costs $100 per ticket or two
for $175. Proceeds support
QEDC’s ongoing efforts to
attract and maintain jobs
in the borough through
business services, neighborhood development, the
E-Space and marketing attractions through QTC and
the Discover Queens brand.
As QEDC is a 501 (c) (3)
nonprofit, proceeds are tax
deductable as permitted by
law. To buy tickets via the
internet, go to www.itsinqueens.com/queenstaste.

FORECLOSURE RESCUE
SCAMS
Be careful of people who
approach you with offers to
“save” your home. There
are individuals who watch for
notices of foreclosure actions
in order to unfairly profit from
a homeowner’s distress. You
should be extremely careful
about any such promises and
any suggestions that you pay
them a fee or sign over your
deed. State law requires anyone
offering such services for profit
to enter into a contract which
fully describes the services
they will perform and fees
they will charge, and which
prohibits them from taking any
money from you until they have
completed all such promised
services.

Senator Addabbo Statement on Funeral of
now-Detective Dennis Guerra
While at the funeral for Police Officer Dennis Guerra, I kept thinking to myself that while
it was the dedicated intention of Guerra and his partner, Police Officer Rosa Rodriguez, to
go towards a dangerous situation to help save others, it is now our intention to pray for his
soul and for his family, as well as the full recovery of Police Officer Rodriguez.
Also so fitting that Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bratton announced at
the funeral the promotion of Police Officer Guerra to First Grade Detective, the rank his
father had in the NYPD.
I am proud of and grateful for the efforts of Detective Guerra, Police Officer Rodriguez
and all the members of our NYPD.

On April 10, Council Member
Julissa Ferreras joined her colleagues in the City Council for a
special celebration at Gracie Mansion to commemorate Mayor Bill
de Blasio’s first 100 days in office.
Since being elected, the Mayor
has initiated a number of citywide

In celebrating the recent victory

Council Member Ferreras authored an op-ed that appeared in
the Queens Courier last Friday. In
addition to discussing what UPK
means to her as a former director
of a Beacon program at P.S. 19 in
Corona, Queens, Council Member
Ferreras outlines the criteria for
UPK applications, which can be
submitted through April 23.
