THANK YOU! - Blackhawk Community Credit Union
summer 2014 messenger the THANK YOU! Student Tellers Teaching Financial Literacy to Others You may not know that in addition to Blackhawk’s six area branches, we also have two student branches that are located in Janesville’s Parker and Craig High Schools. They are run by high school students, along with our branch managers and the schools’ teachers, to provide real world experience with a job, financial responsibility and the opportunity to be a role model for others. The six students managing the branches this past school year set goals that included promoting financial literacy and helping the community. One of the ways they accomplished their goals was by utilizing iPads® and teaching applications that were purchased by the credit union through a grant from the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation. The students became financial literacy ambassadors and taught financial curriculum to local elementary school classes. Also, important to report is that beginning with the 2014-15 school year, the Janesville School District is now requiring a financial literacy course prior to graduation. “While working at Blackhawk, I have learned many important things that will help me in my life with finance. I learned the strong need for financial literacy in my generation and I am glad that Blackhawk has given me the ability to learn all of this important information that I need to know for my future,” said Real Boudreau about his experience. Christy Coleman, Jim Flynn, Real Boudreau, Matt VanRemortel, Sam Gulotta, Alyssa Krauter For Voting Blackhawk #1 Four Years in a Row We are so grateful that you and the residents of Rock County have voted Blackhawk Community Credit Union the Best Bank/Credit Union for four years in a row in an independent survey conducted by the Janesville Gazette. “Receiving this award from the people within the community we serve is a true honor. It is our mission to offer financial products and services that people need and to deliver them with unparalleled service. We believe in people helping people and are pleased to be recognized by this distinction,” said Sherri Stumpf, Blackhawk CEO. Please check out the Readers’ Choice Awards to see all of the winners on Sunday, June 29, in the Janesville Gazette. Thank you for your vote and your business! We are proud of all that the students accomplished and their commitment to financial literacy. We are happy to report that Burtness sold 14 cars at the event. Highlights from the 49th Annual Meeting We are pleased to report that over 350 people were present for Blackhawk’s 49th Annual Meeting held on Sunday, May 4 at the Pontiac Convention Center in Janesville. Members and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet while our Board of Directors and CEO, Sherri Stumpf, reviewed the credit union’s accomplishments and financial performance in 2013. The Board of Directors election results were officially announced at the meeting. There were two open seats and they were filled by Edmund Halabi and Tim Silha. Service awards were also presented to Board Directors, Tom Osmond for 30 years of service and Glenn Lea for 50 years of service. Glenn will continue serving on the Board of Directors as an Emeritus Director. We thank them for their commitment to Blackhawk’s success. Attendees received a complimentary edition of Blackhawk’s Community Cookbook, which included favorite recipes from members, employees and our friends from local charitable organizations. The cookbook also featured photographs from our member, Marsha Mood, who was present at the meeting. The Knitting Grandmas, a charitable organization that Blackhawk has donated to, displayed their quilts as we helped them celebrate knitting their 200th quilt for this year’s Vets Roll trip. Also present was Doris Thom, one of the credit union’s first Directors and members. We were proud to have her with us, along with everyone who attended. Thank you for supporting Blackhawk and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s 50th Annual Meeting! Pick Up Your Community Coupon Book and Shop Local! This is the third year of the run and the proceeds go directly to helping people in our community obtain housing. Stoughton Branch to Continue to Serve Community Blackhawk will continue serving the Stoughton area through our Stoughton branch location. A few months ago, Blackhawk reported an upcoming consolidation of the Stoughton branch into our Edgerton location. At that time, Blackhawk was attempting to sell the building to another financial institution. “We considered multiple offers; however each one came with stipulations that I did not feel were good for our membership. I know that our members are loyal and committed to Blackhawk Community Credit Union, so we would not consider a move that would jeopardize that relationship,” said Sherri Stumpf, CEO. After reviewing all of the immediate options and hearing member and community comments, the decision was made to keep the branch open with a fresh approach and a number of operational changes. We will operate our drive-through Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm and our lobby from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. We will be closed on Saturdays. “To all of the members that took the time to write to me and call with feedback, thank you. Your overwhelming support is a true example of the strong sense of community in Stoughton that makes us proud to serve you,” said Stumpf.
