June 2015 - Luther Memorial Church
Messenger June 2015 Column by Sarah Cordray, Senior Pastor Contents Beckman Project 2 Prayers 3 Church Council 4 Lutheran Night 5 Youth News 6 Worship Assistants Deepening Our Faith Roots through Worship, Fellowship, Bible Study, and Giving “They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jeremiah 17.8 Our growth as Christ’s church can only happen as an outcome of our spiritual depth with our roots by the stream of the water of life. Because of God’s rich grace given in 7 the depth of this earth through Christ, we therefore deepen our roots through the Spirit’s-given power. Last month I wrote these words to you as a reminder and invitation that we are called to deepen our roots so that we may reach out in God’s mission where we are. We are called to dip our roots in the stream where we are renewed, fed, and strengthened. Consider the ways in which we can worship with one another as we move into our summer schedule. We will rotate liturgies between a “Good Old Gospel” service and the “Tree of Life” Contemporary service. Consider the many ways that you can be fed through fellowship together as we gather for coffee after worship or as you are invited to sign up for a “progressive potluck” dinner twice during June and July. Consider the many ways to deepen your faith roots through Bible study either before summer Sunday worship, with a men’s or women’s group, or with Faith and Fitness. Also consider how you can deepen your faith roots through giving of your time, talent, and resources. We look to have two community care days of tying more blankets for Lincoln refugees and yard work for our neighbors in need. Consider how you can give more of yourself and your resources so that you may grow in trusting God that God provides and strengthens your roots. Don’t let this summer become a vacation from being the church; rather, let this summer be an opportunity to deepen your faith roots and grow! YOU ALL DID AN AWESOME JOB AND WE APPRECIATE ALL YOUR HARD WORK THIS YEAR! A SPECIAL “THANK YOU” TO WENDY WERNER FOR 5 YEARS OF SERVICE AS SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT. YOU DID A FANTASTIC JOB!! 5 Wendy Werner, you gave us 5 incredible seamless years, And OH we owe you a thousand cheers! She started planning on this job from the very start, And many say she did it with SO much HEART! First she planned Sun. School curriculum with much concern, That our little ones would hear about Jesus & surely learn. Teaching the bible became her main focus, and Sometimes she added a little of her own fun magical hocus pocus! And SO the kiddos attended Sunday school well, Wouldn’t you know attendance ROSE instead of fell! So Wendy awarded all those little, cute attendees, With special awards, treats and a big hug of squeeze! Next, she tackled the Christmas program year after year, And even had time during one program to make sure the puke bucket was near! (you had to be there!) and if you’re amazed by all that I’ve told Don’t be surprised there’s so much more about her to unfold. Wendy is so modest about ALL that she’s done, Helping get supplies for teachers, she’s ALWAYS on the run! Staying up so late Sat. nights, gathering all that we need, To make sure our lessons are up to God’s speed! Not to mention all the projects she helped me with too, Volunteering with the carpet project, Easter Egg hunt, and OurWorks, God’s Hands too! In all that she said and all that she’s done Wendy has kept her church, family and God #1! Thank you so much Wendy for your time and service and being my mentor this past 2 years!
