A Word from Sr. Marie Paul
Traditionally on this day, the Church celebrates the feast of the Immaculate Conception. I will leave it to the theologians
to explain this dogma of the Catholic Church (many good Catholic sites online!) As a Sister of Notre Dame, I have a
special love for Mary, that, like many of you, is probably not defined by dogma or doctrine, but is simply a loving relationship with our Mother.
A book that I have loved since my high school years is Caryll Houslander’s Reed of God. In this beautiful reflection, we
are presented with a Christo-centric view of Mary. Houslander tells us: “She is not only human; she is humanity. The
one thing that she did and does is the one thing we all have to do, namely, to bear Christ into the world.” This then is
our challenge! We are called, like Mary, to say YES to God. That YES means we are willing to be a Christ-bearer to the
world in which we live. What does that mean? It means simply making it possible for those who meet us to recognize
the Jesus within us. It means being one who says by my life, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2: 6). It means being
willing to stand at the foot of the Cross, in solidarity with those who suffer in any way. It means being with the followers
of Jesus in this post-resurrection time, to encourage, remind, support, and give the example of what it means to be a
disciple of Jesus. Mary does not ever abandon those who love her Son, nor those whom her Son loves; she is always
ready to point the way to Jesus. Houslander reminds us, “…it is really through ordinary human life and the things of
every hour or every day that union with God comes about.” Mary proves that this is so. She did not do extraordinary
things in her life, but her life was extraordinary because the love of God permeated her very being. We are invited to do
the same! As this Advent season continues, let us welcome Mary into our lives; she will teach us the best way to prepare to welcome her Son!
Advent is Here!
In our faith, Advent is a period of preparation, extending over the four Sundays before Christmas. The word “Advent” is
Latin and means “ to come to “and refers to the coming of Christ.
It is a time of readiness and longing…so this year the environment in our parish is reflective of that longing and that
building of anticipation towards the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Please take a moment and note that each week we are adding to the altar arrangement- with new plants (in the beautiful
advent colors of purple and pink) and with a placard revealing the message of that Sunday…and each Sunday we will
add a candle to the Advent Wreath to be lit after the Mass celebration starts.
The first week of Advent was December 1st… now this Sunday, December 8th, we celebrate with the message “Prayer
and Penance”. Listen to the words of the Gospel each week and take some time to reflect during the week as we prepare and wait for His birth.

Joining the St. Mel Parish Community—Deacon Jerry and MJ Cellner
My wife and I are very happy and excited to be a part of
St. Mel’s parish family. In the few weeks that we have
been at St. Mel’s, we have been warmly welcomed by
the priests, staff, and many of the parishioners that we
have met.
I’m sure that you may have some questions about us.
Let me see if I can answer some of them.
My wife, Mary Joyce, (better known as “MJ”), and I have
been married for 52 years. We have two daughters, and
they and their husbands have blessed us with seven
grandchildren, and I have baptized five of them. I have
been ordained a deacon for over 19 years. I was ordained by Cardinal Mahony on June 11, 1994. In the
Cardinal’s homily at my ordination, he said the “deacon
serves as a visible sign of the servanthood of Christ.”
The deacon is ordained for the service of the Church: to
proclaim the word of God, in the sacramental life of the
Church, and in the ministry of charity.
Some of you may know what a deacon is and what he
does. Some of you may not. I plan to be a deacon at
different Masses on the weekend so I, along with my
wife, can meet many of you. And perhaps we will meet
when I am scheduled to do Baptisms.
Deacons are mentioned in the New Testament. They
flourished for a few hundred years and then became less
involved in the Church. It was Vatican II that reinstituted
the Permanent Diaconate in the 1960s. Currently there
are more than 18,000 permanent deacons in the United
States, and well over 300 in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Over 90% of the permanent deacons are married,
and about 2% have never married.
From your Church history, can you think of some deacons? I learned from the parish bulletin that St. Mel was the nephew of St. Patrick. Did you know that St. Patrick’s father, Calpornius, was a deacon? Our new Pope chose the name of
a well-known deacon, St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis was also the patron saint of my ordination class.
We look forward to our continued diaconal ministry to God’s Church and to you, God’s people here at St. Mel.

The Giving Tree
Please pick up a tag from the Giving Tree in the front of
the church and buy a toy for a needy child this Christmas. All toys will go to the Guadalupe Center in
Canoga Park.
Save the Date: Pope Francis
Launch Global Hunger Campaign
to
On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, Pope Francis will
launch a worldwide movement to respond to the needs of
the poor and vulnerable in our midst by praying and acting
to end hunger.
At noon local time on December 10th, a global wave of
prayer will begin on the Island of Samoa and will progress
around the world in each time zone until it reaches the island again some 24 hours and more than 164 countries
later.
The objective is to unite the voices of the Catholic community around the globe to end the scandal of world hunger
and we invite you to participate. The Holy Father’s call to
prayer has also resonated with other religious leaders and
our prayer will be joined with that of our brothers and sisters from many faiths.

95 bags of food were collected during the month of November through the efforts of St. Vincent de Paul and
Justice and Peace. All bags were delivered to the Guadalupe Center in Canoga Park for distribution to needy
families. Thank you for your continued support.

The Loaves and Fishes food pantry at Guadalupe
Community Center needs committed volunteers to
work at the front desk every Monday and Wednesday

Would you like to share your time and talent as a volunteer for Angels Way Maternity Home? We’d love to
talk with you. We are in need of a volunteer bookkeeper with knowledge of payroll and accounting software.
Our needs are not exotic and the time required to do
our tasks would probably not exceed a few hours twice
a month. We are totally flexible with the days/hours.
Angels Way is located in Canoga Park and is a 501(c)

St. Mel Adult Club (50 years+)
Bundle Sunday is December 8
St. Mel Adult Club will meet tomorrow for its last general
meeting of the year; 9:30 a.m. social hour and 10:30 a.m.
meeting. The general meeting will have a slide presentation
by Collette Tours for “Christmas on the Danube” trip, December 2014.
The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be here from 8:00 a.m.
to 1:30 p.m. to receive your donations. Bring useable
clothing, shoes, small appliances, household items, linens, books, etc. They are in great need of all types of
furniture and large appliances. For large items including
furniture and appliance, please phone (323) 224-6280 or
800/97-HELP-1 for a special free pick up at your home.
Remember your contributions will be helping the needy.
Refreshments and Christmas cookies, donated by club
members will be served after the presentation. Bingo to

St. Mel Book and Video Club
The book and video club will meet Wednesday January 15,
2014 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center on the 2nd floor. We will
begin a 6–month movie series starting in January. The feature movie in blu-ray will be The Way written by Emilio Estevez and starring his father, Martin Sheen. The Way is a
powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and
the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing
and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible American doctor who comes to France to deal with the
tragic loss of his son (played by Emilio Estevez). Rather
than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical
pilgrimage "The Way of St. James” (“El camino de Santiago” from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain) to
honor his son's desire to finish the journey. What Tom
doesn't plan on is the profound impact this trip will have on
him. Through unexpected and often times amusing experiences along the way, Tom discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose”. Admittance

DID YOU KNOW?
Santa Safety
Here are some simple guidelines for parents, guardians,
and grandparents to employ to make sure that children
have a safe and happy visit with Santa’s helper: When
your child is with Santa’s helper, consider encouraging
him or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on his lap. Let your child
know that it’s okay to tell Santa what he or she wants for
Christmas but that he or she should also tell mom and
dad because they are also Santa’s helpers…Secret surprises are special but no adult should ask a child to keep
secrets from the child’s parents. Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or make sure that parents,
guardians, and grandparents are included in the interaction.

"A Movieland Christmas"
St. Mel Parish Annual Christmas Concert
Sunday, December 15, 2013
7:00 p.m. in the Activity Center
You are invited to come enjoy the sounds of classic Christmas hits from your
favorite holiday movies and TV specials, performed by the St. Mel Parish Choir,
Bell Choirs and Children’s Choirs. We will be featuring music from shows such as
"White Christmas," "Holiday Inn," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," "A Charlie
Brown Christmas," "Polar Express," and many more! In addition to the fabulous
sounds, you'll also enjoy viewing snippets from these classic films and TV
shows while snacking on movie style concessions and Christmas treats. What a great
way for the entire family to enjoy these classics and start your Christmas celebrating.
Tickets are $10 each and can be pre-ordered at the Parish Center
or purchased at the door on the night of the concert.
Children 13 and under are free.
