Sacred Silence
When we hear or play music we find that the spaces, the silences between notes and at the end of musical phrases,
are as essential to hearing the melody as the notes played. Likewise in our speech, we make room by use of quiet
or silence to give proper place to our words and phrases and let them stand on their own to be effective. We don’t
just keep rattling on. In a similar way, there is a necessary place for silence in the liturgy we celebrate together each
week. Having silence in the liturgy does not mean we need to return to an ethic of total silence in Church, broken
only by urgent whispers. Silence in the liturgy means there is a time and a place for both speech and for silence in
the course of our celebration. It is that profound and fruitful silence to which we are invited in the Psalms: “Be still
and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme upon the earth” (Psalm 46:10).
The Church gives us this invitation in her instructions for participating in the liturgy together. The way we celebrate at
Mass is developed for us in a document called the “General Instruction to the Roman Missal” (GIRM). This is where
we find the order of Mass and the proper way each element should be carried out. In one of the more important sections in this document we read about silence in the course of celebrating liturgy:
45. Sacred silence also, as part of the celebration, is to be observed at the designated times. Its nature, however, depends on the moment when it occurs in the different parts of the celebration. For in
the Penitential Act and again after the invitation to pray, individuals recollect themselves; whereas after
a reading or after the Homily, all meditate briefly on what they have heard; then after Communion,
they praise God in their hearts and pray to him.
Even before the celebration itself, it is a praiseworthy practice for silence to be observed in the church,
in the sacristy, in the vesting room, and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry
out the sacred celebration in a devout and fitting manner.
In order to be conscious of the great value for all of us in observing silence at appropriate points during the liturgy,
our lectors and other ministers are being prepared to observe silence after the conclusion of the readings. It may be
a little uncomfortable at first, but don’t think the lector has forgotten what to do when he or she steps back from the
ambo and lets the word just proclaimed soak in for all of us. This brief silence is part of the celebration itself, not a
pause. The space that silence provides will open our hearts to the Lord who will touch each of us deeply with his
word, that word of hope and joy for which we are all longing

Special Collection – Priest Retirement Fund
Next weekend all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will be asked to give generously to support
the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. At each Mass on June 6th and 7th, a collection will be taken to benefit
this important program.
Currently, the fund provides for more than 100 priests who are retired. Over the next ten years, that number is expected to increase significantly. With minimal compensation, and in many cases, no pension, these men often retire
with nothing to fall back upon. Your contributions can change that.
The Priest Retirement Fund offers us a way to give back to our Catholic priests who have served us so faithfully.
Your contribution will help archdiocesan priests live modestly and peacefully in retirement.
Help us offer thanks for their years of devotion to God, and faithful service to our parish communities.

Special Olympics Southern California changes the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sports training
and competition. Children and adults who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor
skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training
and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Special Olympics events unite the world through sports in a celebration of the abilities and accomplishments of people
with intellectual disabilities and forming a new global vision of acceptance.
With 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and an anticipated
500,000 spectators, the 2015 Special Olympics World Games – being staged in Los Angeles July 25-August 2, 2015 –
will be the largest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world in 2015, and the single biggest event in Los
Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. The 2015 Special Olympics World Games, with the unparalleled spirit, enthusiasm, teamwork, joy and displays of courage and skill that are hallmarks of all Special Olympics events, will feature 25 Olympic-style sports in venues throughout the Los Angeles region.
The Opening Ceremony, to be held July 25, 2015 in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and
1984 Olympic Games, is expected to attract 80,000 spectators. It will be a milestone event of a long-lasting movement, founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, to create a world that is not dominated by those who are excluded
but by those who are included. The Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was

Thousands of volunteers will be needed to stage the largest sports and humanitarian event to take place in Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympics. Some of our jobs require special skills, but most of our positions only require enthusiasm, a big smile and at least 5 days of availability. No matter the job— every volunteer will be critical to the success of
the Games. Priority will be given to those volunteers who are able to work the most number of days between July 25

Why Register in a Parish?
Often people may attend Mass at a certain parish for
several years, but never register. In our society, sometimes a person may feel more comfortable at a particular parish whether or not it is the geographical area
where the person lives. When a pastor accepts the
registration, he also accepts the responsibility of their
spiritual care. For instance, if a person were sick or dying, that parish priest has the responsibility for that person. Parish registration creates a two-fold obligation:
on one hand, the pastor is obligated to support the mission and needs of the parish and its parishioners; on
the other hand, the individual takes on the obligation to
