From the Rabbi’s Study
"Taste" our New “Rimon” service on Second Day of Rosh HaShanah
One of the traditional fruits
we eat on Rosh HaShanah is the
pomegranate – rimon in Hebrew.
When we eat it, we express our hope
that “our merits may increase like the
seeds of the rimon.” Tradition teaches
that the seeds in the rimon number
613 – the same as the count of mitzvot (commandments).
This year, we are trying something different--a service called Rimon
(Day 2 Rosh HaShanah, 9/6) which
Hazzan Ben-Yehuda and I are going to
be leading. What will be different?
Rimon is
bite-sized: only 90
minutes long (10:30
a.m.-noon). You can
get home for an earlier
lunch or catch the end of Musaf in
White Theatre.
Rimon is tasty: Hazzan BenYehuda will be leading (and teaching)
us the most beautiful melodies of
the season so we can join together in
spiritual song.
Rimon is juicy: No formal
sermon. We’ll have some time to
dialogue about the biggest questions
of the day.
Rimon is OPEN: Casual
dress. ALL ages welcome. If you
want – bring quiet toys and books for
the kids.
Rimon is inviting: Rimon
is open to the ENTIRE community.
Do you have family at various synagogues (or no synagogue)? At Rimon
you can celebrate together. No ticket
necessary (for security reasons, we ask
that you bring a photo ID if you don’t
have a ticket).

May You and Your Family be Blessed with a Year of Peace, Health and Fulfillment
Once upon a time very long
ago, God created our world; from the
stars in the sky to our very first inhabitants, Adam and Eve. As time went
on, our world became filled with two
very different kinds of inhabitants.
The first kind believed that
the best world to
live in was their
own little world
with responsibility for only
themselves. Many good and decent
people filled this world, but many felt
that something important was missing from it. While some felt content,
others began searching for the larger
picture. The searchers reached out
and saw that there can be a completely different world. They opened
their arms, hearts and eyes. They saw
things that were of interest to them,

Sukkot is a wonderful holiday for young families!
If you have never had a Sukkah in your yard, check out the
Sukkah Project http://www.sukkot.
com for easy and reasonable sukkot to
build in your yard.
Let your children help you
decorate the sukkah and come up with
an invitation list for a sukkah party.
They can also help make and serve the
food. With a sukkah party the mess
stays outside while the kids have fun
in the sukkah!
For fun decorations that last
for years, go to a fabric store and purchase a yard of clear vinyl. Get water
proof paint and let the children paint
on the vinyl and hang their art work.
Make chains by stringing popcorn and
cranberries.
Family meals in the sukkah
are fun and engaging, and if the Fall
weather is beautiful, what a treat to eat
outside!
I hope you and your family
have a Shanah Tovah Umetukah,

Opening the Polsky Religious School and Bringing in the High Holy Days are Important Beginnings
As your Hazzan and Director of
Congregational Learning, the two most
important beginnings lie in September;
opening the Polsky Religious School,
and bringing in the High Holy Days
with you. Over July and August, the
teachers have been meeting with me so
that I can get to know them. It is very
exciting to recognize that our teachers
are so passionate about your children
and their Jewish education. Patti Kroll
and I have been working to plan several
special programs throughout the year
that will both enhance the learning
in the classroom and will also give
our HBHA students chances to learn
together with our PRS students. I am

have the chance to unite our synagogue

Planned Givers Recognized
R-l: Ron Coppaken,
Denise Coppaken,
Stan Bushman, and
Harold Kaseff
Recently,
the Planned Giving Committee
held their second
annual Recognition Brunch for planned givers, hosted by
Ron and Denise Coppaken at their home. Each planned
giver was presented with a very traditional and beautiful
tzedakah box as a small way for the congregation to say
“thank you” to each of the planned givers. Inscribed on
the tzedakah box are the words, “L’dor Vador. With gratitude from your entire Congregation Beth Shalom Family”
The recognition brunch and tzedakah gift box represents the Committee’s continued efforts to recognize our
congregants for their consideration and appreciation towards the long-term financial survival of our congregation.
The Committee is seeking other congregants who would
be interested in being an integral part of this process. We
hope you will consider an opportunity to discuss this option in your estate planning. You may do so by contacting
Harold Kaseff, Chairperson at 913-859-0530, or email at
haroldk@transtitle.com.

hot water

• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 3/4 cup honey
• 2 1/4 cups flour
• 3/4 tsp. baking powder

soda and cinnamon.
5. Alternating, add flour mixture and coffee to the egg mixture in the bowl. Mix lightly until just smooth.
6. Bake, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick
or knife inserted in the middle of the cake comes out
clean.

Mental Illness Anti-Stigma Campaign
Kansas City’s Jewish community is not immune to
mental illness which is prevalent in America. According to
the National Institutes of Mental Health, “Mental illnesses
are very common; in fact, they are more common than
cancer, diabetes or heart disease.”
In recent years, our community has suffered loss
from the impact of mental illness. Now, in response to that
suffering, steps are being taken to address the stigma of
mental illness and educate the community about its impact
and the resources that are available to help.
The Jewish Community Mental Health Coalition, volunteers, Jewish Family Services
and the Rabbinical Association, is
“Mental

paign at the High Holy Days.
It’s common.
The key message of the effort is: It’s treatable. And it’s
“Mental Illness: It’s real. It’s com- OK to talk about
mon. It’s treatable. And it’s OK to

talk about it.”
The campaign will give clear
insight and direction on how to start and continue the
conversation, even when it’s awkward or uncomfortable.
The reality for most people with a mental illness is that it’s
real, it’s common, and it’s treatable. By placing dignity at
the center of the conversation around mental illness, we
can only improve our lives and our community.
