Mont-Ventoux
With over a thousand plant species ranging in
altitude from 200 to 1,900 m above sea level,
120 nestling bird species and large mammals like
deer, wild boar, mouflon and chamois, Mont
Ventoux is a sanctuary for biodiversity.
Consequently, in 1990 Mont Ventoux became a
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a tribute to its
extraordinary natural value that highlights the need
for protection. It is a privileged area for hiking,
cycling, discovering landscapes, flora and fauna…

Created in 1977, the Luberon Regional Nature Park is a vibrant pristine area covering
185,000 hectares around the Luberon Massif. It covers 77 communes including 57 in the Vaucluse.
The differences in climatic conditions, sunshine, land and altitude contribute to the wealth and variety
of the natural environment and its exceptional biodiversity: 1,500 plant species (30% of flora in
France), 135 birds (50%), 2,300 butterflies (40%). The Luberon Park has been a UNESCO Biosphere
Reserve since 1997, in recognition of the territory’s essential role in the regional ecological balance,
the value of its heritage from an international standpoint as well as the initiatives for its management
and protection.

Leaving the summit of Mont Ventoux to the most athletic, the Vaucluse
reserves its bucolic country roads to cyclists and families wishing to discover
the land. To enjoy the variety of landscapes - vineyards of Châteauneuf-duPape, Dentelles de Montmirail, lavender fields around Sault, perched villages in
the Luberon, Sorgues river… - at your own pace, the wole region is covered with
cycleways that are already marked. In all, there are over 1,500 km of trails
along quiet country lanes away from the main roads.
A network of over 280 professionals having signed the ‘Accueil Vélo’ Charter
offer a privileged welcome to cyclists.
Below, fifteen specially selected cycling itineraries for easy family outings, taken
from the ‘Provence à vélo’ map (Vaucluse by bike).

greenWays
Greenways are to cycling what athletic trails are to running: perfectly adapted trails for bicycles only. All these itineraries,
characterised by their accessibility and safety, are intended for cyclotourists and families.
The Vaucluse is also on the itinerary of the future greenway « V60 Via Rhona ».
In the context of the development of European cycleways, two stretches of greenways are currently open in the
Vaucluse.

The following selected circuits are 16 family-friendly and well marked round trip itineraries ranging from 1 1/2 to
4 1/2 ours long.
There are detailed “TOP 25” maps of these walks available and it is a good idea to have these to hand.
Before setting off, remember to wear appropriate hiking clothes and take rain gear and wind just in case, plus sufficient
water and food for your walk. Don’t hike alone and be sure to let someone know when you are leaving and the expected
length of your walk. You will need good hiking boots. And follow the rule of respect for nature and for your fellow
walkers.
ORGANISING YOUR
HIKE
The department of Vaucluse has
developed and organized system for
hiking and walking paths (the
PDIPR), which covers over 130 of
the 151 towns in the region. In
order to effect this ambitious plan,
the Vaucluse General Council has
identified and marked the paths
suitable for hiking, riding and
24
mountainbiking, and has established
over 5,000 kilometres of these
trails. People are clearly out and
about in the Vaucluse!
Since 1999, the General Council has
taken a new direction in setting up
the HIKING TOURING NETWORK.
The purpose of the PDIPR is to
protect the trails and paths from
development, whether public or
private. The Touring Network is a
service provided for its users. It
offers paths through public land
which are maintained and well
marked, open to hikers, bikers and
horseback riders.
The trails are marked according to
the method approved by the FFRP
(The French Hiking Federation). This
system of marking makes it easy to
follow the path without getting lost.
There is a signpost at each
intersection along the network
indicating directions. This network is
constantly being improved.
The network covers the main hill
regions of the Vaucluse, the
preferred destinations for these
outdoor activities.

All the intersections along the
network are signposted with a name
and the altitude. Yellow arrows show
the names of the next intersections,
and their distances (in kilometres).
Further distances are also shown,
for these may be your goal, or they
can help orient you.

Please note:
If sign-posts are missing, please
inform the environmental service at
the Vaucluse General Council and
provide them with the name of the
signpost and arrows which are
remaining.

This touring network is for every
kind of non-motorised path user –
hikers, mountain bikers, and
horseback riders. It is made up of:
• “Grande randonnée” (GR) paths,
which are marked with a red and
white stripe
• Local “grande randonnée” paths
(PR), marked with a red and yellow
stripe
• Bridle trails, marked with an
orange dot
• Other paths, marked with a yellow
line
The tourist hiking network in the
Vaucluse is arrowed and marked to
facilitate location. It is advisable
nonetheless to use TOP25
1:25,000 IGN maps. The references
covering the Vaucluse, from north to
south, are:

The limestone cliffs of Provence are deservedly famous among rock climbers. The quality, variety, and the range of challenges, the secure equipment and the
good climate, conducive to climbing all year long, all make the Vaucluse a preferred destination for lovers of this vertical sport. In the heart of the Luberon,
the site of Buoux is known the world over, and well-appreciated by climbers. The Dentelles de Montmirail range, the “quatre saisons” site, has been climbed
since the 1940’s. There are many other sites which add to the choice, don’t hesitate to contact the Local Rock climbing Federation (FFME) for more information.

The waters of the Rhône and its tributaries, the Durance and its backwaters, the River Sorgue and its canals all provide
a wealth of fishing areas.
There are 2900 kilometres of riverbank, ranked in the 2nd piscicultural category, as well as quiet fishing holes and
ponds. Here you will find numerous species of white fish and carnivores. There are in addition, 600 kilometres of river
ranked in the1st piscicultural class, including mountain water trout streams that descend from Mt. Ventoux and other
mountains of the region. There are 700 hectares of man-made ponds and lakes situated in 30 places across the
Vaucluse. These are all rated as second class fishing and offer the fisherman carp and other species of white fish as
well as their predators. 48 different kinds of fish are found in Vaucluse …

Fly for the first time, or fly again
and again, in hot-air balloon above
the Luberon range, between Gordes
and Roussillon (both ranked as
“Most Beautiful Villages in France”).
The flight lasts an average of one
hour. However, if you like, the entire
experience can last three to four
hours, including filling the balloon,
the flight, the wonderful sharing of
a glass of champagne and toasting
the flight with regional products and
back in 4-wheel drive to the initial
meeting point.

Careful!
Spelunking can be a risky
sport, and entering caves,
swallow-holes, pits and
kettles must not be done
alone.
