Hadassah, the Women’s
Zionist Organization of
America: Our Mission
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
Recently Ellen, a friend (and fellow Hadassah member), wrote a piece in her
business’ newsletter called, “Waiting for the Time? Big Mistake!” It reminded
me of how often we put off things for a “better” time – be it a vacation, a phone
call to a friend, or even participating in an event. It brought to mind the
profound teachings of Rabbi Hillel, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?
But if I am only for myself, who am I? And if not now, when?" [Ethics of the
Fathers, 1:14]
“If not now when?” We all know that time flies by. How many times have we
thought: “I will do this next week, after I finish this project or when the kids are
not so busy”? Then before we know it, the opportunity passes; and, we no
sooner promise ourselves that we won’t do that again when – lo and behold – it
happens again.
The summer months are usually a time for slowing down; however, our
wonderful community is not slowing down, for we are home to the Hadassah
98th National Convention in July. If ever there was a time to experience some
Hadassah, now is the time. Take this opportunity to meet with fellow Hadassah
members from around the country and the world, hear world class speakers,
share the passion that we, as women who do, can express in no better way than
being involved. Don’t have the time to come to the entire convention? Come for
a day, volunteer as a greeter, help with welcoming the nearly 2,000 women of
Hadassah who will be here. This is the time!
Hadassah, the Women's Zionist
Organization of America, is a volunteer
organization that inspires a passion for and
commitment to its partnership with the
land and people of Israel. It enhances the
health of people worldwide through its
support of medical care and research at
the Hadassah Medical Organization in
Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers its
members and supporters, as well as youth
in Israel and America through
opportunities for personal growth,
education, advocacy and Jewish continuity.

Hadassah Greater Atlanta’s Study Group has completed a study of Jews in most of the Muslim Lands and we have
moved on to study the Jews of the World. We have many more countries to study and continue to meet on the
fourth Friday of the month (or sometimes the 3rd or 5th), from 10:30 AM-12:00 noon at the Hadassah HUB Office.
Our discussions are led by one of our members and are thought provoking and very lively. We also have great snacks
and schmoozing!
Upcoming session: June 24 (Friday) – a special meeting with Ghila Sanders, talking about the history of the Jewish
communities in Italy; meet at the Selig Center 10:30-12. Note Special Location
New participants are always welcome. If you are interested in joining, please email Sybil Ginsburg, GAH Study Group
Chair, at sginsbu@emory.edu . Also, let us know if you have a particular interest in the history of the Jewish people
in a particular country.
Training Wheels: Al Galgalim
Come join us as we go around the year “al galgalim” (on wheels)
From Shabbat and Rosh Hashanah through the year to Shavuot, we’ll have fun learning about the Jewish holidays!
Training Wheels/Al Galgalim, a Jewish family education program created by Hadassah, lets parents and children (ages 35) become partners in discovering the joys of being Jewish. The curriculum activities include songs, stories, crafts, games
and holiday foods, all of which enable adults and children to experience together the pleasures of celebrating Shabbat and the
Jewish holidays.
Training Wheels meets nine times throughout the year on Sunday mornings, from 10-12, and is led by trained Hadassah
volunteers. Give your family a precious gift of heritage that can last a lifetime! The program is about families – parents and
children – participating in Jewish rituals and spending quality time together. If you have friends you think might be interested in
Training Wheels, feel free to forward this information to them.
Upcoming session: June 5 – Shavuot

MAJOR GIFTS MESSAGE
Dear Hadassah members,
Each month I struggle writing my message to you all. I cannot begin to impart the passion I feel for the amazing
organization that is Hadassah. How do I, or how does anyone, share with someone—in a written message yet—what
one feels about an organization? It is a genuine dilemma. HOWEVER, it is time for everyone in Hadassah Greater
Atlanta to feel that same passion, to share the pride with all about this our Centennial Year. We can look back with
wonder and pride and see all that has been accomplished. Nonetheless, as we all know, things are now moving at
lightning speed, unlike any time previously experienced. So, I am going to be contacting as many of you as I can to
find out what your thoughts are and together we will create a Legacy for the next century! A legacy gift given now is
a decision to live a life beyond ourselves. The only metrics that mater in our lives is whom did we help. I am ready to
listen; let’s do it together!
B’shalom,
Rita
Rita Loventhal
Major Gifts Chair, Hadassah Greater Atlanta

potential as professionals, citizens and mothers. In many cases, women who are newly divorced, have
