Bananas are the number one fruit crop in the world, although they can be classified as both a herb and a berry too. The "tree" from which we get bananas is actually a herbaceous plant (or herb), because the stem doesn’t contain any woody tissue, so its produce i.e. the banana, could be considered a herb. However, because a banana originates from a single flower ovary and contains the seeds of the plant, it can also be classed as a berry. Confusing! Whatever you choose to call them, bananas form the fourth largest crop in the world, after wheat, rice and corn. They are grown in more than 100 countries, with India being the biggest producer. Recent archaeological discoveries suggest that banana cultivation could go back many thousands of years. The word "banana" is thought to have its origins in West Africa, which was then passed into English via the Spanish or Portuguese . The scientific name for banana is musa sapientum, which means "fruit of the wise men", reportedly due to Indian legend that wise men meditated under the shady leaves of banana plants. Despite its long history of cultivation, bananas weren’t widely known about in Europe until the Victorian era. In 1872 Jules Verne introduced the reading public to bananas via his literary creation "Around the world in 80 days", describing them as "...the fruit of which, as healthy as bread and as succulent as cream, was amply partaken of and appreciated".
