The Department of Ophthalmology of the University
of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Bascom Palmer
Eye Institute, is recognized as one of the worldʼs
finest and most progressive centers for ophthalmic
care, research and education. It is ranked the best
eye hospital in the United States by U.S. News &
World Report, a national magazine that ranks hospitals throughout the country.
As the largest ophthalmic care facility in the
southeastern United States, more than 250,000
patients with nearly every ophthalmic condition are
treated each year and more than 12,000 surgeries
are performed annually.
Each of its full-time faculty of internationally
respected physicians has completed a fellowship,
and excels in at least one ophthalmic subspecialty.
Additionally, the faculty at the Institute conducts
innovative biomedical research and presents
progressive, industry-leading academic programs
to medical students and ophthalmologists alike.
In keeping with its commitment to global
exchange, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is now
pleased to provide a structured clinical observership
program for ophthalmologists from around the world
who are interested in enhancing their knowledge
of ophthalmological subspecialties and wish to be
exposed to eye care as practiced at one of the foremost training centers in the world.

Upon arrival, the observer meets with the respective subspecialty service director to discuss current
educational interests. Typically, observers rotate
with most members of the faculty of the indicated
subspecialty in order to see different physicians in
practice, clinics and surgeries. This process, however, varies by subspecialty. Subspecialties available for observerships are Cornea and External
Diseases, Glaucoma, Neuro-Ophthalmology,
Oculoplastics, Ocular Pathology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, and Retina and Vitreous Diseases.
Please note that these programs are strictly
observational tutorials, and direct patient care is
not permitted.
VISAS
It is the responsibility of the observer applicant to
apply for and obtain any necessary travel visas.
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute does not coordinate
or facilitate this process.
