FEBRUARY 2015
Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
A new calendar year gives us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and plan. Of course, each year we do so, and even make
some New Year’s Resolutions. Then reality sets in and our plans often go on hiatus.
So, instead of encouraging and asking about the status of each other’s particular resolutions, I suggest something else.
I invite you to think more broadly about a particular theme.
I speak about the idea of thriving.
If one goes back to the 4th Century before the birth of Christ, to the time of Aristotle, we can get a start on this theme of
thriving. Aristotle, the last of the trio of great Greek philosophers, succeeded Socrates and Plato. In his great work,
Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle introduced the word “eudaimonia” --- now translated to mean “human flourishing.”
What does it mean to flourish or to thrive? One group of scholars at Cornell University calls it “the innate potential of
each individual to live a life of enduring happiness, penetrating wisdom, optimal well being, and authentic love and
compassion.”
I suspect everyone reading this will say to that definition --- “Count me in.” After all, who does not want to flourish, to
thrive?
Aristotle has been joined over the centuries by many men and women who spoke of these very same possibilities while
also pointing out the road blocks, obstacles, missteps and wrong turns that must be overcome on the way to flourishing.
Today, I want to say loud and clear: we who serve at De La Salle want you, as parents, students, alumni, friends and
supporters of our school to flourish. Aristotle reminds us that we all have that potential --- it is built into our DNA.
Bounce ahead 400 years in history from Aristotle’s milieu to the time of Christ and we find a simple yet extraordinary
claim in the Gospel of John. Jesus, speaking as the good shepherd about his sheep in the 10th chapter of John’s gospel,
says: “ I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.” Jesus is telling us with unmistakable clarity that
he wants us to flourish.
Let’s now stop in on 17th Century France --- roughly 2,000 years after Aristotle and 1,600 years after Christ walked
among us. A French priest and pioneer educator, John Baptist de La Salle, now a saint and Founder of the Brothers of
the Christian Schools and the international religious and educational movement that bears his name, had a breakthrough experience. His life’s work would turn to educating the poor and those in any kind of need, or, in the words of
De La Salle, “those far from salvation.” About 35 years ago, the De La Salle Christian Brothers captured De La Salle’s
vision and passion by speaking of Lasallian education as forming the mind and touching the heart. The Brothers also
spoke about giving a human and a Christian education. Just like Aristotle, Lasallian educators want to develop the
whole person, want the students in front of us to thrive and flourish in all dimensions of their lives, from the tending of
their souls to the growth and proper use of all their gifts and talents, whether that it be in the intellectual realm, the
business of earning a living, the commitment to serving others, or the nurturing of the call to marry well and raise children with the greatest care.

One more stop at the year 1955 is in order.
That is when Patrick Dennis wrote a novel that became a stage musical and a film. It was called “Auntie Mame.” Even
if you are not familiar with it, you may remember the motto that Mame said over and over again. She said,
“Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving.”
Why? One answer is that they did not take seriously the invitation to have life to the full --- to flourish. They chose to
be other than that --- to starve.
A quick look at the program of studies at many colleges and universities demonstrates that the study of human flourishing --- both the art and science of this --- is big news on campuses. Cornell University names it the call to “A life worth
living.” I prefer the formulation of the late and great Archbishop Fulton Sheen whose famous television show in the
1950s and 1960s spoke of “life is worth living.” What Cornell and Sheen have in common is that they both landed
eventually on the “how to” of life. The Cornell folks claim that we have a long way to go in unlocking the keys to human flourishing. They say we know a whole lot more about how to deal with human illness, dysfunction, and disease
than we do about how to build resiliency in humans so that they may flourish. Sheen would agree but was ever the immediate optimist about this challenge insofar as he focused his thinking and believing on the sufficiency of God’s grace
and our cooperation with it.
We know a whole lot more about money matters than matters of meaning. Robert Kennedy, in 1968, the year he was
assassinated, made this remarkable statement:
“The gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of
their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It neither measures our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom
nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except
that which makes life worthwhile”.
Maybe this is where teaching, parenting, and mentoring come in to play key roles in helping our young men of De La
Salle figure out how to understand life as worthwhile and act accordingly. Of course, to make this kind of contribution
to human flourishing, one must begin with adults who have set up a personal program that allows them to pay attention
to what they need in order to flourish. The Cornell studies and experiments in this area focus on the role of positive
emotions. The Cornell researchers see positive emotions as the balm for the stresses of life, as a pathway toward resiliency.
So, in these early months of a new calendar year, when new approaches to old challenges seem possible, as conversations about thriving take place among parents, teachers, and young people, reflection on the changing profiles and needs
of students and parents occur, and we consider the role of influences outside family and school life, not the least of
which is social media, I encourage you to bring a sense of positive emotions to the table. This is not a call to be naïve
about life’s challenges or the complexities of issues we face. It is, however, a call to take on challenges and issues with
a solution-oriented mindset. That, of course, requires a proactive stance --- looking around the corner and developing a
2

“can-do” perspective, as well as effective channels of communication and support, that anticipate challenges and issues
and how to think about them before they overwhelm us.
The research from Cornell has generated four findings about positive emotions:
They undo negative emotion arousal;
They broaden attention and thinking;
They fuel psychological resilence;
They trigger emotional and physical well-being.
Dr. Anthony Ong at Cornell sums up his findings as follows:
“When our positive emotions are in short supply -- when we feel hemmed in by negative emotions such as fear and
sadness -- we become stuck in a rut and painfully predictable. But when our positive emotions are in ample supply -when we feel lifted by the centripetal force of our closest relationships -- we take off and become generative, resilient
versions of ourselves.”
This is no easy matter to address. It is likely more than a little harder than just singing and maybe dancing to the
“Happy” song by Phardrell Williams (do a Google Search for “Happy song” and watch some fun video recordings). But
the song’s key insight, I think, is that it starts with attitude. In simple words, we can choose to be happy. In no way
does this insight dismiss or minimize the daunting issues that arise from the reality of depression in its concrete and clinical manifestations for particular individuals. But it is to say that this reality is not the only force in play.
So, I invite you today to thrive as the people whom Jesus wants to have life to the full. And this is so even in the face of
life’s challenges and setbacks. There may not be all the wisdom needed to figure this out within our great school community, but there is, surely, lots of it. I encourage you to contribute to that reservoir of wisdom, share it with all you
meet, and also use what you receive.
God Bless!

Dear Parents,
"Do not forget to thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed on you."
Letter 76 from Saint John Baptist de La Salle to a Brother Director - date unknown.
What great words from our founder to begin a new year. How often do we overlook how we have been blessed in our
lives - I know I am guilty of this. As our new year starts we have the opportunity to be thankful for the big and small
blessings in our lives. As a school it is our obligation to help our young men understand how we and they are blessed.
One of the verses from the song Grateful sung by Art Garfunkel's says it best:
I've got a heart that can hold love
I've got a mind that can think
There may be times when I lose the light
And let my spirits sink
But I can't stay depressed
When I remember how I'm blessed
For me these words came to reality on January 10th when our Board of Trustees spent the afternoon volunteering at the
Monument Crisis Center as part of their annual retreat. The Crisis Center was started by Sandra Scherer, a former parent
and a current member of our Board of Trustees, who cares about those less fortunate than ourselves. Our young men
volunteer there on a regular basis and some of them were introduced to De La Salle through the Center. We sorted
canned food that was donated and prepared for those who would come to receive the food on Monday morning. We assisted with lots of other tasks – many hands make the load light. I think the Trustees came away from this time together
with a greater appreciation for what our young men do, not only at the Crisis Center but for all that they do for those who
are less fortunate. Service to those less fortunate is a hallmark of a Lasallian education. An education without applying
it benefits no one.
And so for this new year of 2015 let us not overlook how we have been blessed in our lives. Don't forget to thank God
for those Blessings he has bestowed on you.
In the Spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle,
Mark DeMarco
President

ACADEMIC PROBATION/F GRADES: Students who
fall below a 2.0 GPA are placed on academic probation.
Probation letters were sent home in January. Any student who
earned an “F” at semester should have taken the following
action by now:
Returned the signed form to Mrs. Mattos and discussed the
plan for retaking the course, either through a DLS approved
on-line course or some other means. Please note that all semester “F’s” earned by underclassmen must be made up
through online classes, or at night school or summer school
before the beginning of the next school year. All seniors must
make up F grades earned before a diploma will be issued. All
F grades are permanent grades to the transcript, and will be
calculated into the GPA. Once a student has repeated the
class in summer school, the new grade is shown on the transcript, but is NEVER calculated into the GPA. Students who
received a “D” in any class should also note that colleges and
universities expect the student to improve this grade by taking
it again in summer school or at a junior college in order to be
eligible for admission into a 4-year college. Our director of
on-line learning, Mr. Donald Van Bomel, can answer any
questions about accredited and approved courses that your son
may choose to improve his grade. Mr. Van Bomel can be
reached at: 288-8160, or vanbomeld@dlshs.org.

DEVELOPMENT AND ACADEMIC SERVICES
We have completed nearly a month of the second semester,
and our students are well into their academic course work for
this second half of the year. Academic life is very busy these
days! The students are also beginning to think of course
selections for next year. At this time, please note the following:
ATHLETIC/ACTIVITY ELIGIBILITY: Athletic and
activity eligibility was recently determined based on semester
grades. Letters were mailed to the homes of applicable students. If you have any questions about this, please contact
Mrs. Szczepanski.
REPORT CARDS: Fir st semester r epor t car ds wer e
mailed on the third week of January. These report cards
reflect the work of the entire first semester and are permanent
grades that are stored on the student’s transcript. Please
continue to look at PowerSchool as appropriate in order to be
aware of how your son is progressing during this second
semester.
PREREGISTRATION: Fr eshmen, Sophomor es and J uniors start the pre-registration process during the first week of
February. The counselors are going into the classrooms to
discuss the process and course selections with all students, as
well as the timeline for pre-registration on-line. The course

Contact Mrs. Szczepanski at (925) 288-8109 with questions.
Please note that STUDENTS WILL BE REGISTERING FOR
THEIR CLASSES ON LINE. Detailed information and instructions for enrolling for classes and printing the course
selections will be given to the students during registration
week. Students must print out their course selections, obtain
your signature, and return this sheet to their counselors during
the registration weeks. There is a special form required if
upper division students are requesting De La Salle only for
their classes, which must be turned in by February 27 th for
consideration. If students do not have access to a computer at home, the course requests can be printed at school. It is
very important that students and parents understand that the
master schedule is built upon student requests at this time of
year. Therefore, only minor adjustments should be made over
the summer. By taking the time now, you avoid many difficulties and little choice later. If you have any questions about
this process, please do not hesitate to call Mrs. Mattos at 2888101, or contact your son’s counselor.

FAFSA:
Seniors should check Financial Aid deadlines and forms required
on each of their prospective colleges’ websites. Individual
colleges may have their own financial aid deadlines in January or
February and may also require forms in addition to the FAFSA
(The Free Application for Federal Student Aid—required by all
colleges). Don’t miss a deadline and miss out on financial aid
available from your college! Students and parents filling out the
FAFSA need to complete it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov before
the earliest deadline, even if they must estimate income and
expenses for 2014. Some merit-based scholarships and awards
also require submission of the FAFSA, so it is a good idea for all
students to fill it out, even those who feel they won’t qualify for
financial aid.
SENIORS:
DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE VISIT:
Diablo Valley College representatives will come to De La Salle
on February 10th to provide interested students with information
about attending DVC. Announcements will be made ahead of
time to remind students to sign up on Naviance to attend the
information session. They will return in March to administer
their Math and English Assessment to students planning to
attend community college next fall. The tests are used for placement purposes. Students will also fill out applications to DVC
and make appointments for required advising sessions in College
Advisory. The tests may also be accepted by community colleges other than DVC. Check with the college counselors if you
have questions about this.
CAL GRANT:
The De La Salle Registrar will send the GPA Verification information to the Cal Grant Program for all Seniors. Seniors do NOT
need to send in a separate form for this program, but must submit
their FAFSA by March 2nd in order to be considered for a Cal
Grant.
CSU ELM/EPT (PLACEMENT TEST) REGISTRATION:
CSU applicants should be receiving information from the individual campuses on the ELM (Entry Level Math test) and EPT
(English Placement Test) required of many applicants. Students
are strongly encouraged to take the test(s) no later than the
March 21st test date; for most campuses the tests MUST be taken
by May 2nd at the latest.
JUNIORS:
For more information go to http://www.csueastbay.edu/
testing , or to www.csumentor.edu . Students may take the tests
at the nearest CSU campus; they do not need to take it at the
campus that they are considering (CSU Eastbay in Hayward and
Concord are good possibilities.)
JUNIOR PARENTS’ COLLEGE PLANNING and
ACADEMIC ADVISING NIGHT:
Be sure to attend this important event on Wednesday, February
4th at 7:00 p.m. in the DLS Theatre. The College Counselors will
present essential information to guide the college exploration and
selection process. In addition, information for planning senior
year courses will be provided.
CSU HOUSING APPLICATIONS:
For seniors planning on attending a CSU campus, NOW is the
time to apply for housing at many campuses, before the student
has actually decided to attend. Many CSU campuses do not have
enough housing for all freshmen and to have an opportunity to
live on campus students must submit a preliminary application
ASAP. Check on the individual campus websites for the housing
application policies; they vary by campus and while many of
them encourage early housing applications, some do not allow
students to apply before they make their decision to attend. Some
out of state public universities also have limited housing and
advise students to apply for it early. Check individual college
websites for information.
COLLEGE PLANNING MEETINGS FOR JUNIORS:
Beginning the third week of January, DLS College Counselors
began meetings with small groups of juniors to formally start the
college planning and selection process, providing materials and
information crucial to making informed, realistic choices for
college. We encourage parents to sit down with their junior
students to begin discussing the college search process and a
possible trip during spring break to visit different schools. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact Esther Lopez (AL), Ext. 8103, or Janet Appel (M-Z), Ext. 8128.
SUMMER ACADEMIC/ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
AND CAMPS:
Announcements and brochures for summer academic and enrichment programs, both state and nationwide, are posted on the
bulletin board near the attendance area, on Naviance, and on a
list in the College Center and on the DLS website. Juniors,
especially, are invited to explore the possibility of summer
programs as a valuable addition to their activities. These programs offer a variety of new and exciting experiences, and can

See above for Spring SAT and ACT dates remaining. All
colleges and universities accept either the ACT or the SAT, and
we encourage students to take both. Go to the websites to register: www.actstudent.org and www.sat.org. Students should check
the ACT website or check with the College Counselors to see if
the colleges they plan to apply to require the writing test, as
students may opt to include a writing section with their ACT (the
writing test is automatically included with the SAT). Students
may want to use the May or June SAT test date for SAT Subject

The Senior Mother/Son Liturgy and Brunch will be held on
Sunday, March 8th. The Liturgy will be held in the Theatre
followed by brunch in the Hofmann Student Center. This is a
wonderful opportunity for mothers and sons to spend quality
time together before graduation. You can register online on the
Parent Links & Resources. If you have any questions, please
contact Rosanne Maloney at maloneyro@aol.com or Sheryl
Guistolise at sherylfox@sbcglobal.net.
The Ven a Ver Immersion Program has two trips this semester.
They are March 16-21 to San Diego and April 22-25 to Salinas.
Please keep participants in your prayers.
DLS ATHLETIC SUMMER CAMPS: DLSHS will host
athletic summer camps in 2015 to provide a fun, skill-building
week for kids. Appealing to local youth with a variety of athletic interests, De La Salle will offer sessions for Championship
Football Camp, Barry Brothers Basketball Camp, Lineman
Camp, Track & Field, Lacrosse, Wrestling, QB & WR, Volleyball, Baseball, Soccer, Water Polo, and Strength & Conditioning. In addition to serving local athletes, these camps will also
benefit students at De La Salle by providing resources for the
Bishop John S. Cummins Scholarship Program. For all camp
information and updates, please go to www.dlshs.org.
Mr. Trinidad’s 4th period Religious Studies II class will attend
the Sophomore Immersion Program (SIP) February 19 in San
Francisco’s Tenderloin District and his 6th period class will
attend on February 26th.
Seniors, there are plenty of openings on KAIROS #93 held
March 3-6 at Bishop’s Ranch, Healdsburg. Do not miss out on
this great opportunity. The retreat gives you the opportunity to
reflect on your relationships with yourself, others and God.
Participants have said that Kairos is where they felt the true
meaning of the Spartan Brotherhood. Don’t miss out on this
powerful experience. You must register online by Friday, February 7th at:
SPRING SPORTS: Baseball, Swimming & Diving, Lacrosse,
Golf, Tennis, Volleyball, Track & Field, and Rugby will begin
February 9th. All students need to have a medical and parent
release form completed and signed before they can participate.
Medical forms are located in the Main Office and on the
school’s website. Announcements will be made at school and
posted at www.dlshs.org.
http://www.dlshs.org/campusministry/retreats/index.aspx
The annual Spartan Charity Challenge begins Ash Wednesday –
February 18th and runs through Lent ending on March 30th.
During this annual fundraiser our student body, faculty, and staff
donate spare change, or whatever they can afford, to support De
La Salle’s commitment to four charities.
ATHLETIC PHYSICALS: This is a reminder to all studentathletes who plan to participate in sports. Pre-participation
physical examinations are valid for one calendar year only. If
your physical is not up to date, make an appointment prior to the
start of the season so you will be ready to compete during your
season of play. Appointments should not be made during class
time. Freshman athletes have a physical on file in the Registrar’s Office and do not need to have another to play a sport
unless that physical expires at any time during participation,
inclusive of tryouts and post season play. If a student does not
have their physical completed by the first tryout date, they will
not be allowed to participate. Forms are available in the locker
room, main office, or at www.dlshs.org. Contact Mr. Leo
Lopoz or Mr. Derricke Brown if you have any questions.
Three of the charities remain the same:
1.
Athletic schedules and general information for all sports are
available in the main office, the locker room, and at
www.dlshs.org.

California Scholarship Federation: The application deadline
for the spring semester based on grades earned in the fall is now
closed.
The 4th - at large – charity this year is Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos - an organization that hosts our students every summer
on an immersion in Guatemala, living and working with the
children and staff for a week at an orphanage there. We
support this organization’s commitment to help in the spirit of
the Lasallian mission to serve and teach all, especially the
poor.
Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica: The Spanish Honor Society
Chapter: “Los hombres de fe” or Men of faith, will hold its
second induction ceremony on Wednesday, February 11th.
Congratulations to the newest members of this honor society.
Blood Drive: On Wednesday, February 25th DLS will hold its

parental consent. A 16-year-old MUST have a signed parental
consent and meet all requirements on the form in order to donate. All students must have an ID with them when they donate. If you have any questions or would like to donate please

these charities. Thank you in advance for your support of
your sons in this worthy endeavor.
ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR
The Spartonics Robotics Team will participate in
one tournament this season, March 18-20 at UC Davis.
This year’s contest, “Recycle Rush,” involves moving
and stacking totes and recycle cans in a simulation of a
recycling yard.
Christmas at DLS: Thank you to all who had a hand in
helping with Christmas at De La Salle, students, faculty, staff
and especially our parents who were responsible for the cookies
and milk afterwards. Students seem to have had a good time at
the event but I think it is time to change the sing-a-long song.
Visit http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/2015-game to
see a description and an animation of this year’s challenge.
Visitors and supporters are always needed and welcome.
Questions? Contact Mr. Fryman at frymand@dlshs.org.
Toy Drive: A big thank you to Mr. Eidson and his freshman
religion classes who ran a successful toy drive that benefited:
the Bay Area Crises Nursery, Holiday Helpers Warehouse in
Martinez, St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Angels in Pittsburg,
and The Monument Crisis Center. A special thanks goes out to
NHS for their idea of selling wristbands that allowed all to wear
sweatpants during finals, all the money collected from this sale
went to the purchase of more toys.
DRIVER’S EDUCATION CLASSES: If you would like to
register for fourth-quarter classes, applications are available
from Mr. Bradford in Room 201. The $150 fee is due with
the registration form on the first day of class. Classes are held
during 7th period, Monday through Thursday, for the entire
quarter. This is classroom instruction only, and there is a
state-mandated minimum attendance requirement.
Recognition Assembly: On Wednesday, January 22nd, DLS
held its Student Recognition Assembly, taking time out to honor
the many academic and co-curricular achievements for the fall
semester. Students were able to see their names on the list of

One cannot open up the newspaper or turn on the news and not see
the results of disrespect. Whether it is racial, religious or other areas,
respect is an important aspect of life. Company strives to address
this facet of our daily lives, showing that art does imitate life. This
spring production is completely student written, directed, designed,
and built. We are excited to share their words, perspective, and
learning with you through music, scenes, one acts, spoken word, and
movement pieces.
