Ladies of Charity Invest Ten New Members
The Ladies of Charity of St. John the Evangelist, Naples,
invested ten new members on March 15 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass
celebrated by Fr. John.
Deacon Rob Chalhoub, chaplain of the organization, with the
assistance of President Val Matulis and Vice President Anne
Michaels, installed the following women: Caroline Bishop,
Louise Dodd, Joan Johnson, Barbara Kavney, Genevieve King,
Jeanne Meleo, Lee Myalls, Sandie O’Connor, Linda Salava,
Ellen Hooper.
Fr. John also presided over the installation of the new slate
of officers: President is MarieElaina Mullin, Vice-President
– MaryEllen Sabol, Secretary – Kathy Kasper, and Treasurer Anne Michaels.
During Mass each inductee received a beautiful silver Crucifix
and the Ladies of Charity of the U.S.A. Manual. Following
Mass the members, Fr. John and Deacon Rob enjoyed a
deliciously catered brunch.
Their Mission Statement reflects their commitment to service to
the poor:
“Recognizing that each life is a gift from God, and that
we are called by God to do this work on earth, we gather
together bonded by God’s love, to share His love and our
own unique God-given talents to serve our community. We
strive to preach the gospel by our actions in humble service
to others.”
The Ladies of Charity are involved in numerous outreach
projects in Collier County. On Wednesday and Thursday of
each week two different groups of six to ten women carpool
to the RCMA Community School of Immokalee. Each lady is
assigned up to five students for one-on-one help with reading.
Simply listening to the child read aloud, offering encouragement
and giving helpful hints to improve their skills has proved to be
an invaluable help to these youngsters.
Members of the group attend monthly Masses at three local
assisted living/ nursing homes, provide friendly visits and
perform simple errands for the elderly and homebound, as
well as serve at the Guadalupe Center’s soup kitchen and St.
Matthew’s House one day each month.
A hugely successful bicycle drive organized by Val Matulis
provided 226 bikes to the children in Immokalee, while their
efforts to raise funds for the soup kitchens they service produced
almost $8,000 in donations from the St. John the Evangelist
parishioners. These funds will be shared by Casa Maria or St.
Matthew’s House soup kitchens during the summer months
when donations slow down.
Mentoring young women residents of Providence House and
supporting their efforts to become self-sufficient in their careers
and successful in their life choices is another ongoing project.
The Ladies of Charity always welcome new members whether
seasonal or full-time residents. The Lord may be calling you
to this ministry. If you are interested in joining the Ladies of

Sacrament of Baptism
The Diocese requires that parents
seeking baptism for their child attend a
baptism preparation class. To schedule a
baptism class, parents must be registered
practicing members of St. John’s for a
minimum of two months. Classes are
offered once a month and baptisms are
celebrated on the first and third Sundays
of each month after the 1:15 p.m. Mass.
Please call the parish office to register for
a class. Upon completion of the class and
fulfillment of the godparent requirements,
parents may schedule a baptism date.
Sacrament of Matrimony
Those who wish to be married in our
parish must complete the Marriage
Preparation Program. The Diocese
requires a six month notice.

Life Matters
I hope no one really missed this column last week. The
launch of the Spiritual Adoption program was the big Life
news of last week. I'm hoping everyone has a newly adopted
unborn baby to pray for and protect as we follow his or her
development in this column and online. The Respect Life
committee has also ordered some posters to keep track of our
babies' development.
I was hoping to bypass the other big news on the Pro-Life
front, that being the trial of the now infamous Dr. Kermit
Gosnell in Philadelphia. I am hoping you are aware of this
story, but if you are getting your news exclusively from the
mainstream media, chances are you know very little of the
house of horrors this abortion doctor has run for almost 35
years. According to The N.Y. Times, this is “a local story” and
they are not covering it. CBS and NBC have both pretty much
ignored the story. It is so bad, that the non-coverage of this

major news event has become a story of its own.
In a nutshell, Dr. Gosnell is on trial for the murder of seven
infants and one mother. If these eight lives had been taken
by a gun, we would be hearing about every detail of every
movement leading up to their deaths. But these lives were
taken by a doctor, sworn to do no harm. Is it possible the
media is beginning to see the hypocrisy of their stance?
I doubt it. Let's remember to pray for all the victims of
abortion. Dr. Gosnell's trial helps us remember that these are
live babies, often viable, and vulnerable women who feel
they have nowhere else to turn, who are the real victims of
abortion. God bless you and keep praying to bring an end to
this grisly practice in our country.

Last week’s Bible on the Beach with our high school youth group was a blast. About 25 of us walked down to Delanor
Wiggins for some ultimate football, swimming and chilling at the beach. Bible on the Beach gives teens the opportunity
to experience God through the beauty of his creation and his Word. We practice an ancient Christian form of reading the
Bible called Lectio Divina. Students learn how to read Scripture in a slow, prayerful manner that enables God’s Word to
penetrate their hearts and transform their lives.

Respect Life. A group of parishioners committed
to protecting the sanctity of life in all of its

Cenacle of Life Prayer Group
Blessed John Paul II said “a great prayer for
Life is urgently needed!” Cenacle participants
pray for an end to the Culture of Death
every Tuesday evening, 6:00 to 6:45 p.m.,
in the Adoration Chapel. In the powerful
presence of the Blessed Sacrament, we offer
10 mysteries of the rosary and related prayers
and we fast one day a week on our own. All

Last Friday, 458 parishioners packed
the ballroom for our annual Reverse
Raffle. I would like to make one final
THANK YOU to those who purchased
tickets to this marvelous event. Now
that many of you have experienced
what a fun time was had by all, selling
tickets next year should not be such
a struggle. We made winners out of
approximately 25 attendees, although as it turns out, there
was only one BIG winner, claiming the entire $10,000.00
prize. After drawing the first 290 tickets, the remaining 10
ticket holders were invited to come up to the dance floor for
the grand finale. Unfortunately, three of the
final 10 were not in attendance so we continued
drawing tickets. When we were down to the
final two tickets, there was one person present
and one that chose not to attend. As it turns
out, Carol Swank was the last person standing
and claimed the entire $10,000.00 grand prize.
Carol Slater claimed the $750.00 side board
prize, while Tom & Ginny Tette claimed the
$1,500.00 side board prize.
After realizing that she had indeed won the
grand prize, Carol was ecstatic and speechless
at the same time. Ironically, Carol (a seasonal
resident) just registered at the parish only two
weeks ago. Asked what she was going to do
with her new found fortune, Carol gave a truly
selfless response. Carol is a member of a parish in Virginia
which is over 150 years old. The roof on her northern church
is in total disrepair and needs to be completely replaced. She
is giving the entire $10,000.00 to this parish in order to replace
the roof. She called her Pastor on Sunday morning and told
him the great news. This is a truly heartwarming story and
another example of the amazing parishioners we have within
our parish. Congratulations Carol and thank you
for your act of kindness.
Kathy Sims (our bulletin editor) producing the electronic
version of our bulletin in house. She then sends the finished
version to Messner Publications. The digital version is then
sent to a machine where plates are made. Only one plate
is made for every four pages of our bulletin. The plates (8
for each four page run) are then inserted onto the press and
the color enhancement process begins. Nearly 500 pages
will print before the acceptable version is set. This process
is repeated seven times in the case of our bulletin, which is
28 pages. Once all eight copies (four pages per copy) are
completed, they are sent to a machine which cuts the sheet
into four pages. A collating machine then arranges the bulletin
which is then sent to a stapling machine. Finally, the finished

product is then boxed and shipped via FedEx to St. John the
Evangelist. I felt it worthwhile to let everyone know exactly
what goes into the process of producing our new bulletin.
You are all aware that our parking lot has been the subject
of numerous discussions over the years. Ironically, after
completing the Claussen Center in 2006, there is more than
I would like to give a “shout out” to the members
of our youth ministry that helped with seating
all of our 458 guests at the Reverse Raffle. This
was a chaotic scene and your efforts helped this
process run very smoothly.
Last week I alluded to the fact that I was attending
the grand opening of Messner Publications’ new
facility which houses their million dollar press
which produces our bulletin. I have included
several pictures of the press as well as a picture
of the paper roll which ultimately becomes our
bulletin. I was blown away by the entire process.
The press is over 100 feet long and has countless
moving parts. To think that we produce this
publication weekly is truly amazing. The process begins with

ample parking for everyone. This does not stop many of you
from parking anywhere you deem appropriate. The attached
picture was taken during the 9:00 a.m. Mass this past Sunday.
The driver of the vehicle in question must have felt that since
one of their four tires was touching the grass
that this was a legitimate spot. As it turns out,
there were several parking spaces no more
than 50 feet away which were vacant. Had
an emergency taken place during Mass, the
fire department would not have been able to
navigate past this vehicle to attend to a sick
or injured parishioner. In addition, we would
have received a nice fine from the North
Naples Fire Department as a result. As you
can see from the picture, this was a beautiful
morning and an extra few steps to Mass
certainly would not have inconvenienced this

individual. Please consider my comments when parking your
vehicles in our parking lot.
Speaking of the parking lot, have you taken a look at the
trees which line our grass parking areas and
campus? The majority of these trees are
mahogany, while we also have gumbo limbo,
black olive and oak. All of these trees are
deciduous, however, their cycle is much
different than the deciduous trees many of you
are familiar with up north which lose their
leaves in the fall and bloom in the spring. By
looking at our parking lot, you would think
that it is fall rather than spring. All of these
trees lose their leaves and bloom during a very
short cycle which generally lasts no longer
than two months. In addition, the mahogany
produces a very obnoxious seed pod which
litters our parking lot with debris.
The good news is that this cycle
is nearly complete and we will be
able to appreciate the beauty of
these trees for another 10 months
until the cycle begins again.

The Wisdom of Love
s we journey through the Easter Season we encounter the many human emotions in experienced in the
characters of the early Church. In today’s gospel we are taken back in time to the event of the last supper
to remember how the early disciples are informed by Jesus that he will be departing their company. The
disciples must have been confused or heartbroken at this news. Jesus offers them the wisdom of love as
the model for their future. In offering the love of Jesus to others the Church begins to grow and flourish.
In embracing the gift of Christ’s love the healing and teaching of Jesus continues in the ministry of the
apostles and early disciples. Although Jesus cannot be seen, his love can be felt. The people who live in
first century A.D. Israel know the Christians by this love.
We are called to love as Jesus loved. This seems to be a simple task when simply stated, but the love that
Jesus offered the world was quite radical and life-changing. Jesus’ love is a gift that is to be offered to all
peoples of every time and place. It is quite evident in the gospels that Jesus loved all people regardless of
their sin or ignorance – Jesus hated the sin but loved the sinner. Our love is not to be offered in isolation
to those who offer us love, but also to the ones we have difficulties with. The
purest ideal of love is to offer it without conditions – in this we find much favor
with God. We are called to love the sinner even when their sin has affected us or
hurt us. This is indeed a difficult task in all honesty.
If we were to look at a good example of unconditional love, we could look
to the vocation of parenthood. Parents watch their child grow and sacrifice
themselves to provide the necessary nourishment for that growth, making safe
the environment in which the child is to mature. Sometimes parents struggles
inwardly when they see their child fall and make mistakes. True parents pick up
their child when he falls and helps him move beyond his mistakes by offering this
unconditional love that Jesus gave to his disciples. In order to see the child truly
grow, parents have to embrace the gift of letting go in order to let the child find
his way. Many parents at this time are preparing to deal with this reality as they
see their children graduate high school and are faced with their leaving home.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us how we should
identify ourselves as Christians. He doesn’t mention fish
on Fridays or golden pendants. He doesn’t endorse
bumper sticker fish. He doesn’t mention political parties.
The old song proclaims, “They will know we are Christians
by our love.” But that’s rarely the case. This hit home for
me when my daughter mentioned that a friend, Zack, would
not be going to the (Catholic) high school prom because
“he’s a Christian.” She didn’t press him on his answer, but
when I asked, “Well, what are you?” she responded, “I
thought I was Christian, but I’m going to a dance, so …”.
Now that Christianity has become the majority faith, we
seem to have hit a new identiy crisis. We don’t strive to live
our lives as “Christians,” but as “Catholics,” “Presbyterians,”
or (my favorite) “Bible-believing Christians.” Even within
the Church, there are divisions between conservatives and
liberals, progressives and traditionalists, the “European”
Church and the “American” Church. Jesus reminds us that
the only competition we should have among ourselves is to
love.

other as Jesus loves
Jesus’ command for us to love one another as he loves us
is one of his most important and most difficult commands to
follow. He gave this command at the Last Supper but the
Apostles were so confused by what was happening they
didn’t understand its importance. Jesus talked of love and
glory, and the Apostles didn’t realize that both would
involve great suffering.
Jesus wanted his followers to be clear that the love we
are to have for each other is to be as sacrificial as the love
he demonstrated throughout his life and on the Cross when
he gave his life for us. As true Christians, we’ll love
everyone with the love of Christ. He said, “This is how all
will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
another.”
What can a parent do? Jesus intended for Christians
to stand out in the world by behaving differently than nonbelievers. Remind children that because Jesus is no longer
visible on Earth with us, we have to be his hands and his
heart to those around us.
