Update on raises for employees
By Sheriff Rick Ramsay
As you know, providing raises for MCSO employees was a top priority for me this year. In my budget,
I requested a 3.5% pay increase. I personally met with each County Commissioner
to discuss my budget and explain why I believed you
all deserve raises. In the end, the County was unable to give us a 3.5% raise, but did agree to provide
a 2% merit based raise. While it is not as much as I
hoped that it would be, 2% sure beats nothing. Looking back over the past six years, which were
some of the most financially challenging times for
this County, we did better than most across the State
and Nation. Raises for Civilians and Teamsters will take
effect October 1, 2014. F.O.P. raises will take effect when a contract is ratified. This does not apply
to HIDTA staff working outside of Monroe County
whose salary is determined by South Florida HIDTA
and NHAC and is paid through Federal funds.

Upcoming events raise money for
Special Olympics
This is the third year of the SUP Invitational, an
event that has propelled Standup Paddle into the
sports line up for Special Olympics Florida. This local
event started a movement in Special Olympics Florida that is unstoppable. There are five other states in
the USA that are incorporating SUP into their Special
Olympics programs because of what was started
here in Key West.
Funding is very important because Special
Olympics athletes who travel from all over Florida
are Never charged a dime to participate. They have
a free dinner and dance at KWHS Oct. 11 and SUP
race all day at Higgs on Oct. 12 with free food.
Sheriff Rick Ramsay was named the MARC Volunteer of
the Year last night. Here he is with Executive Director
Diana Flenard accepting his award.
Lazy Dog is designing this course and it promises to be fun! You can register at this link: https://

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Feel
free to join in the most fun event ever, we guarantee
you will smile for at least 24 hours after the event.
Please spread the word!
PS-- for you runners--- yes the Southernmost
Marathon is this same weekend. It is our “parent”
event. The SOMO race organizers are hosting us, so
if you run on Sat and want to SUP race on Sunday,
let me know and you will receive a discount code for
Sunday SUP race.
Fraudulent unemployment claims
By HRD Executive Director Donna Moore
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO)
has received notification of five fraudulent claims for
unemployment benefits. In each instance, someone
filed the claim using the identity of a current or former MCSO/HIDTA employee. All of the fraudulent
claims have been reported to the State of Florida,
Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). We
are informed by DEO that this problem is not unique
to Monroe County. In each of the cases, the MCSO-Human Resources Division received a notice from the Florida
Department of Economic Opportunity that someone
had applied for unemployment benefits. If you receive any document of this type at you home address, please take the following steps.
Contact Donna A. Moore in Human Resources at
(305) 292-7044.
Send a copy of any documents received to
Donna A. Moore at dmoore@keysso.net or you may
bring them directly to the Human Resources Division.
Prepare a notarized letter stating that you have
not applied for or received unemployment benefits. (Human Resources members are notaries, and will
be able to assist you). The letter should contain the
following information: Your name, home address,
last 4 of your SSN, and the statement that you have
not applied for or received benefits and the claim for
benefits was fraudulent. Forward the information to me and I will forward
to the Department of Economic Opportunity fraud
unit at firre@deo.myflorida.com.
You may also call the fraud hotline at 1-800-3429909. Keep notes of the name of the person with
whom you spoke, the date, and the substance of the
call.
Report the event to local law enforcement in
your area. Get a copy of the police report and forward a copy to me.
Keep an eye open for any other accounts that
someone could open in your name (e.g., PayPal,
credit cards). Report any suspicious activity to local
law enforcement, with a copy to me.
Please contact me if you have any questions or
require additional information.
