Page 4 November 23, 2014 Stewardship A Way of Life Bulletin Reflection When the Son of Man comes in glory, may we be among those who have fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked. For Jesus tells us clearly that it is those who have demonstrated good stewardship by sharing their gifts with the less fortunate who will receive God’s blessing and inherit the kingdom. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who give evidence that Christ is Lord in their lives through adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, attendance at Benediction or Forty Hours devotion. Sharing One’s Material Resources in the Parish Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Monday - after 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Masses Rosary After the 9:00 a.m. Mass each Monday through Saturday in the Cathedral except on First Saturday when it is recited at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament You are invited to join us each Friday for some quiet reflection and prayer in the Holy Cross Chapel following the 9:00 a.m. Mass concluding with Benediction at 3:00 p.m. From the Rector — Dear Parishioners: I write to you with a word of welcome, some words of invitation and a word of blessing. A word of welcome goes to Deacon Sean Magaldi who will be with us on weekends starting with the weekend of November 29-30. Deacon Sean was ordained as a transitional Deacon at the beginning of November and he will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in June 2015. Some may remember Sean when he served here as a seminarian from May to July 2014. At that time he lived in the rectory and was active in the school as well as many other areas of parish life. At the current time, as he completes his academic formation from Monday to Friday, he will be with us on weekends when he will have the opportunity to function as a Deacon in officiating at Baptisms, assisting and preaching at Masses and wakes and participating in the general “weekend” life of a parish. On behalf of all of us, I welcome Deacon Sean. Next some words of invitation…On Tuesday evening at 7:30, the annual Rockville Centre Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is taking place. This year it is being held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church located on Woods Avenue in Rockville Centre. Please see the bulletin for further details. On Thanksgiving Day, I especially invite you to Mass at the Cathedral. The 9:00 a.m. is a concelebrated Mass with Choir and is a beautiful, prayerful way to give thanks to God for his many blessings. In addition to this Mass, moreover, we also have the regularlyscheduled 6:30 and 7:45 a.m. as well as the 12:10 p.m. I especially encourage you to make Mass part of your Thanksgiving celebration. Also, next Sunday, Bishop Murphy will be celebrating his 50th Anniversary of Ordination. Cardinal Dolan will be the homilist and all are invited. Finally, but most importantly, a word of Blessing for you and your family...While its source is unknown to me, it expresses my sentiments: May your family gather in joyous peace May the cranberry relish charm your taste Enjoy your turkey in a happy feast And finish off with pumpkin as grace May you thank the Lord with all your strength For food and drink and love and friends For his goodness through life's long length And his promise of a Eucharist that never ends. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your family! The need throughout our communities is still great, so we thank our parishioners in advance for your support. Page 5 Campaign Update We are most grateful to those parishioners who have made a gift towards the Cathedral Restoration. Brochures outlining the details of this project are available at the doors of the Cathedral for anyone who did not receive it in the mail. Over this week, 35 more households made commitments towards our campaign. To date, 209 households have made a commitment towards this project and these commitments total a little over $1.3 million towards our $2 million goal. Since the work that will be done entails maintenance and upkeep, safety and beautification and will benefit every person who is part of St. Agnes Parish, it is our great hope that every parishioner will give prayerful consideration to helping us meet our needs according to that which their means allow. Religious Education We are in need of substitute catechists for Mondays and Tuesdays. Substitutes are usually called upon the day needed but sometimes we know in advance. Virtus training is required. If you can assist please call the Religious Education office at 678-2306. Holiday Schedule The Rectory Office will be closed on Thursday, November 27th in observance of Thanksgiving Day and will re-open on Friday, November 28th at 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. There will be no Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, November 28th as the Parish Ministry Building will be closed. Page 6 November 23, 2014 Advent Lessons and Carols The Diocesan Choir of Rockville Centre will present a service of Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 7th at 3:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Agnes in Rockville Centre. Bishop William Murphy will preside. The 50 minute service consists of scripture readings, choral anthems, and hymns taken from the Advent season, proclaiming hope to a world waiting in darkness. This year’s service will feature choral music by Felix Mendelssohn, George Friedric Handel, as well as contemporary composers Elizabeth Poston and John Ferguson. The service also includes several classic Advent carols, all of which are tied to the scripture readings that are read. One highlight of the service will be a dramatic reading of the Annunciation story, when Mary was visited by the Angel Gabriel, revealing that she was to be the mother of Jesus. The lector who reads the story is accompanied by organ, trumpet, and choir. Throughout the service, the choir will sing from several different locations around the cathedral, and even completely surround the congregation to sing “in the round”. The 100 members of the Diocesan Choir come from many different parishes throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. This season, in addition to singing for all the major Diocesan celebrations at the Cathedral, the choir will present Missa Gaia:Earth Mass on April 24 in conjunction with a new encyclical on the environment being released by Pope Francis, and in honor of Earth Day on April 22nd. The choir plans to celebrate their 25th Anniversary by making a choir pilgrimage to England and Ireland in June of 2016. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Msgr. James P. Kelly Parish Center, to which all are invited. For more information go to www.drvc.org/diochoir or contact the Diocesan Worship Office at 678-5800, ext. 504. All are welcome! Ministry of the Word Holy Name Province (USA) Order of Friars Minor Monday, December 1st to Wednesday, December 3rd - 7:30 p.m. St. Agnes Cathedral - Rockville Centre Monday Tuesday Wednesday All You Need is Love! Let There Be Peace On Earth! Lord, You Can Heal Me! In the face of violence and injustice it is tempting to abandon our belief in a God of love. We proclaim that God does indeed hold each of us in a l o vi n g e m b r ac e, which gives us the strength to carry on, as well as the ability to reach out to those in need. In a world that more and more seeks to resolve co nflict through retaliation, p u n i s h me n t a n d violence, we proclaim a God who is merciful and who always seeks to forgive and who calls us to become peace make rs by forgiving those who have wronged us, and by accepting His gift of mercy for ourselves. In spite of the advances made in medicine and technology, suffering and sorrow still afflict the human heart. We proclaim through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ people of today can find healing, restoration and new hope. Come to the Fountain of Life! Drink Deep and Be Refreshed!
