A Message from your Pastor
Dear Friends,
As I write this letter, I have just finished
putting up the Christmas tree in my house and
decorating it. I always find setting up the Christmas
tree a holy moment, but one filled with melancholy
and memories because the tree and many of its
decorations belonged to my mother. Each ornament
holds memories from childhood or, for the newer
ornaments, memories of past parishes and friends.
The tree itself, a “fake” one, had for years born the
name “the pencil tree” – so named by my siblings
because it is very narrow. My mother liked it because
it did not take up a lot of space in her small living
room. With my decorating ended and a glass of wine
poured, an email went out to my siblings letting them
know that the “pencil tree” was standing once again.
Christmas carols were playing quietly in the
background when I began to wonder where did this
tree thing get its start?
I know that there are lots of stories crediting
Martin Luther with bringing the tree into the home for
Christmas, but I thought there must be a deeper and
older story. I know St. Boniface, a missionary to the
German people in the 8th century, cut down an oak
tree that was worshipped by the local people. When
the gods did not strike Boniface down as they
expected, the people converted to Christianity. He
helped the Germanic peoples move from worshipping
trees to worshipping the God of Jesus Christ. Many of
the monks from St. Columbkille’s monasteries did the
same with other Germanic tribes. Maybe it had
something to do with that?
Here is what I found: By the early Middle
Ages, a story began to circulate that when Christ was
born in the dead of winter, every tree throughout the
world miraculously shook off its ice and snow and
produced new shoots of green. About the same time,
Christian missionaries preaching to Germanic and
Slavic peoples were taking a more relaxed approach to
cultural traditions. These missionaries believed that the
Incarnation proclaimed Christ's lordship over those
natural symbols that had previously been used for the
worship of pagan gods. Not only individual human
beings, but cultures, symbols, and traditions could be
converted. So, to have evergreen garland in your home
was no longer seen as a means to worshipping trees.
However, the most likely story about
Christmas trees links them to “mystery plays” and
celebrations that
were held in the 14th
and 15th century.
They were rowdy,
imaginative
performances done
by laypeople and
taking place in the
open air. Mystery
plays celebrating the
birth of Jesus were linked to the story of creation,
because Christmas was also considered the feast day
of Adam and Eve. As part of the mystery play for that
day, the Garden of Eden was symbolized by a
"paradise tree" hung with fruit. The mystery plays
were banned in the 16th century because they got too
wild, but the thought is that people then took the
banned public performance into their own homes.
Early Christmas trees were called “paradise” trees and
were often hung with round pastries that were to
symbolize the Eucharist (hosts). The custom gained
popularity in Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries.
So much so that preachers were concerned that the
tree was becoming more important than the nativity
story. The Christmas tree became popular in the
English speaking world in the 19th century with the
immigration of many Germans to the United States
and Canada.
Which brings me back to my tree and a
comment I heard recently. Someone was talking about
the items they were putting on their tree and said that
the ornament was too beautiful to hang on a tree.
Which got me thinking that the same statement could
be made about Jesus – something too beautiful to
hang on a tree; the tree of the cross. The ornaments
on my Christmas tree are filled with the memories of
my life. Reminders of where I have come from. The
tree serves as a reminder of the never ending love God
has for me – which is green and bears fruit no matter
how cold I have become. God’s love…so strong that
Jesus was willing to be crucified to a tree so that I
would not have to suffer the consequences of my sin.
Two trees. A cross and an evergreen.
Reminding me, and hopefully, reminding you, that we
are loved – always.
Peace,
Fr. Damian

ADVENT BIBLE STUDY
For our Advent Bible Study this
year, we will be using a new series
from Fr. Robert Barron. The
Priest, Prophet, King Study
Program presents the Old
Testament foreshadowing of each
of Jesus’ three offices as priest,
prophet and king and then
describes how Jesus is the fulfillment of each as seen in the New
Testament.
The lessons are as follows:
1. Adoratio: Adam as Priest and The High Priest
2. Challenging False Worship: Elijah the Prophet and The Word Made
Flesh
3. Ordering the Kingdom: King David and the King of Kings
The sessions will take place in the Steinhausen Center at 9:00 a.m. or
7:00 p.m. on the first three Mondays of Advent:
December 15: Jesus the King
Each session will contain two twenty minute videos from
Fr. Robert Barron with follow-up discussions led by Fr. Damian Zuerlein.

EATING RIGHT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
When you occasionally skimp on meals because you're busy
shopping, wrapping, and baking, nosh on a protein-packed snack,
such as low-fat yogurt or reduced-fat cheese, to blunt your hunger
before gathering with family or friends.
At parties, pile your plate with lower-fat foods to limit high-calorie
splurges. The following top picks have fewer calories, fat, and
sodium and more fiber than other holiday fare:
• Whole grains, such as whole-wheat rolls, wild rice, and quinoa
• Shrimp, lobster, and other steamed seafood
• Plain or lightly dressed vegetables
• Meat and poultry without the gravy
• Salad greens (lightly dressed)
• Fresh fruit
Keeping in mind portion control, these seasonal favorites can offer fewer calories when you prepare them with an
artificial sweetener used in cooking, such as Splenda. Here's what they have to offer, besides calories:
1. Applesauce and apples - Heart-healthy fiber does indeed keep the doctor away. Look for unsweetened
applesauce to get the fiber without the sugar. Bake apples with the skin to get a potent flavonoid called quercitin,
which helps prevent heart disease.
2. Cheese - You get the most bone-building calcium and protein from hard cheeses.
3. Cranberry Sauce (Unsweetened) - Cranberries spell trouble for bacteria that cause most urinary tract infections.
If you like sweet cranberries, add a minimal amount of sugar, or artificial sweetener.
4. Dark Chocolate - Seventy percent dark chocolate contains the most flavonols -- helpful plant substances that
help decrease cholesterol.
5. Green Beans - Naturally low in calories, string beans are loaded with vitamin K, which helps protect your bones.
They are also a good source of vitamin C and vitamin A, but skip heavy sauces with this veggie. Try beans lightly
tossed with olive oil and lemon.
6. Nuts - Nuts are full of heart-healthy unsaturated fat, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.
7. Pumpkin Pie - This rich orange vegetable contains carotenoids for making vitamin A in the body and fighting
free radicals. Pumpkin is also a good source of potassium and fiber. Beware: most pies are loaded with sugar.
Use artificial sweetener instead of sugar for a lower calorie dessert.
8. Yams/Sweet Potatoes - Yams offer carotenoids, potassium, vitamin C, and fiber. Candied yams are high in
sugar. Bake with a bit of brown sugar, or with artificial sweetener, for the taste without the calories.
Happy Holidays & Best Wishes to You and Your Family!

MORE THAN DISCIPLES
Each of today's four scriptural roles--disciple, prophet, apostle, herald--forms a facet of our life in Christ as we live it day
by day. Isaiah tells us that a prophet is anointed, as we were anointed at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring
glad tidings and to promote God's reign of healing, justice, and peace. An apostle, like Paul, is one who is "sent." Each
of us, in his or her own way, is sent by Christ to be a voice of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic voices in the world, and
to make sure that the work of the Spirit thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the herald, making the Lord's way
straight, announcing the coming of the Light of the world.
Today we also hear from Mary, model disciple. Her song, the Magnificat, shows us the world we must believe in and
work for: one in which God is praised, where God's favor is bestowed on the humble, where the hungry are filled and the
rich are sent away empty, a world that continues to know and rejoice in the mercy of God that lasts for all ages.
