Dear Zeta Chi Omega Sorors,
June has been declared Chapter Pride Month! The attire for the June 1, 2013 General Membership meeting is
relaxed, and sorors are encouraged to wear their Chapter T-shirt to the meeting. If you did not purchase a
Chapter T-shirt, be sure to come in your finest AKA paraphernalia. The meeting will be held at the Nannie J. Lee
Memorial Recreation Center at 10:00 AM.
The Chapter has been approved by the Regional Director, Soror Linda H. Gilliam to proceed with the next step
in the Membership Intake Process. The prospective candidates have been approved by the Corporate Office
and Soror Gilliam. The Chapter will vote on the prospective candidates at the June 1, 2013 General Membership meeting. Sorors that are not members of Zeta Chi Omega will be asked to leave the auditorium
while the Grammateus reads the candidates’ applications.
Sorors, if you are attending the Leadership Conference in Montreal,Canada, please forward your name to Soror
Chiquita King, Anti-Grammateus. The Mid-Atlantic Region will host a hospitality suite at the Leadership Conference. The details will be sent out in the Monday Memo once they have been finalized by the region.
On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Northern Virginia held the annual Black Scholars Award Program. Our two Cooley-Moore Scholarship recipients were announced at the well-attended event.
A special “thank you” to the Scholarship Committee for all of their hard work with identifying the scholarship recipients by April 2013! “Tea Roses” to Sorors Angela Turner and Chiquita King for their support of this annual
program and for ensuring that Zeta Chi Omega was well represented.
The Ivy Foundation of Northern Virginia, Inc. (IFNV) will hold its annual meeting on June 25, 2013 at the Nannie
J. Lee Memorial Recreation Center at 7:00 PM. All sorors are encouraged to attend. You will learn more about
the purpose of the IFNV and fundraising activities that benefit the Chapter’s programs. If you have any questions please contact Soror Hazel Cameron, IFNV Chairman.

Living in expectation is necessary to one's spiritual wholeness. Expectation is a present hope in the midst of disappointment, grief, and even despair. Expectation is a "knowing," an assurance of a better day. Expectation is faith in action.
How can we be bearers of expectation in the midst of economic disparity, violence, and global suffering? For the Christian, our biblical text prepares us to look to Jesus. Jesus, the bearer of all God's kingdom promises. Jesus' words, "Do
not let your heart be troubled," show us the compassionate God who knows our every concern, hurt and need. In this
great text, Jesus is teaching an eternal lesson for living and not worrying. The lesson is about trusting in the steadfast
love of God. God's love is gracious, merciful, comforting, and always available to all who will call on the name of Jesus.

In all the fullness of His divinity, Jesus, like us knows, what it is like to feel alone. If you are experiencing a season of loneliness, burdened by grief, or troubled by too many cares, Jesus declares to you, “I have a special place Where I Am." A
place in the heart of God where the weary will find rest. "I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from
all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame." (Psalm 34:4-5).

In June!
June is Soul Food Month!
MAY PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS
“May Mayhem” was filled with many activities. Just to
name a few…
 We recognized Asthma Awareness Month, with the
Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative (APMI)
Committee. During the May 4th General Membership
meeting, we displayed information about asthma and
prevention tips. The culminating event was the May
16th Third Thursday, one-hour webinar, “Waiting to
Exhale,” featuring Soror Gaynelle Pearson, and International APMI Project Director, Soror Diane Adams.
Approximately 30 participants received asthma facts,
prevention tips, resources, and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s
APMI program information. A huge thanks to all Chapter members who attended and who invited guests to
this session. Thanks to Sorors LaKeisha Scott (APMI
Chairman) Yvette Riddick (APMI Co-Chairman),
The Global Poverty Initiative
and Health Initiative CommitSoror Kendra Gillespie tees have cooked up a special Third Thursday treat for
you, so please come and enjoy the summer closeout
event of the year on June 20th. Learn about how to keep
the soul without losing control of your health.
June also marks the close to a most successful school
year for our Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) and Project
StepOut programs; committed to the development of
young middle school students and elementary students,
respectively. In June, we will pause to honor EYL, our
signature program.
JUNE SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Join the Health Initiative Committee on Saturday, June 15,
2013 for the annual Relay for Life. By doing so, you support the American Cancer Society, our International

2012-2013 Emerging Young Leaders
Program Summary
Marilyn Whitehurst (Health Committee Chairman) and
Kimberly Speed (Health Committee Co-Chairman) for
their commitment and support of the APMI kickoff.

The Health Committee, Health and General Wellness
Initiative, also led the Chapter in the annual Susan G.
Komen Race for the Cure® on Saturday, May 11,
2013. Thanks to Sorors Joyce Brooks and Starr Garrett who served as Team Captains. Please refer to
the Health Committee report for details.

Under the direction of Soror Saundra McCulloughCobey, the Global Poverty Initiative and Social Justice
Initiative Committees joined forces for the May 19th bimonthly meal service provided at Carpenter’s Shelter.
Because the Carpenter’s Shelter recently suffered a
fire onsite, this month we served a special catered
dinner. We appreciate everyone’s support of the residents of the Carpenter’s Shelter.

Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) participants visited
the Butterfly Habitat Garden at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History on May 18, 2013.
Hats off to Soror Annie Goshay for taking the lead to
ensure our girls had an enjoyable time. A special
thanks to the entire committee for your timeless service and commitment to our EYL program!
This month we celebrate the hard work of our signature
program, Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) Initiative. This
Global Leadership through Timeless Service (GLTTS)
Initiative impacts the lives of girls in grades six through
eight by providing leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character
building. EYL’s goal is to help our youth become better
leaders at a younger age; making smart choices with positive consequences.

SHARING PROJECT.
As you know, programs are the “heart” of Alpha Kappa
Alpha, and I invite each of you to learn about our programs
and serve on one of our Program Committees. Please
continue to support our programs through participation,
promotion and service. Have a GREAT summer break.
Under the direction of Sorors DeChane Dorsey
(Chairman) and Erica Jeffries (Co-Chairman), Zeta Chi
Omega’s EYL program has been recognized as one of the
Mid-Atlantic Region’s outstanding EYL programs and our
Chairmen were featured as guest panelists during the
2012 Mid-Atlantic Regional GLTTS EYL workshops. The
EYL Committee consists of dedicated committee members
who take time to work with our middle school participants
on a monthly basis and ensure their constant growth
through a host of leadership development opportunities
and enrichment activities. During the 2012-2013 school
year, EYL participants were active with a host of events
and service projects.

the EYL Committee engaged participants in a myriad of
structured and interactive activities In September, the group participated in a book discussion,
“The Skin I’m In,” to promote self-esteem as part of the
Character Building AKAdemy. In October we reinforced
the Leadership Development AKAdemy with elections,
followed by a Career Day in March. In honor of Black History Month, our EYL girls visited the Alexandria Black History Museum (February) and participated in an oratorical
speaking contest. Both activities support the Educational
Enrichment AKAdemy. Participants also visited the National Women’s Museum (January) and National Natural
History Museum (May) as part of the Educational Enrichment AKAdemy. For the Civic Engagement AKAdemy,
participants learned about the electoral process
(November) and showed their community spirit with the
City of Alexandria’s Holiday Sharing (December) and Black
History Museum (April) “go green” projects. In addition,
the girls participated in ice skating (January). A year-end
culminating graduation and celebration will take place at
the Ritz Carlton, Pentagon City (June). To top it off, our
Chapter’s EYL program was nominated as an Alexandria
City Public School Outstanding Partner

Sorors, do you have pink and green items and paraphernalia that you have never used or no longer need? Yes,
we all have those pink and green garments that no longer
fit us, have tags on them, and/or still in the box.
Over the summer, start pulling them out to prepare for our
“reuse event,” which will take place during the Chapter
Retreat in September. We will set up an AKA Stop ‘N
Swap Shop at the Chapter Retreat. Sorors can shop, at
no cost, for pink and green items. To prepare for this activity, we are asking sorors to donate new or clean, gentlyused pink and green items, clothing, and AKA paraphernalia of all kinds. We will collect these items at the June
and September General Membership meetings. Remember: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Please contact Soror Aja

Global Poverty Initiative
Soror Saundra McCullough-Cobey, Chairman
Global Poverty Committee hosted the second Carpenter’s
Shelter Meal Service on Sunday, May 19, 2013. A total of
13 volunteers came out to support this effort. The lunch
was catered by Mr. Big Boy’s Kountry Kitchen. Menu consisted of ribs, chicken, collards, green beans, potato salad,
yams, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, rolls, tea, and
lemonade. The sorors served approximately 45 residents
with smiles. We enjoyed fellowshipping with the shelter
residents, as well as with each other. Our hearts were
blessed to see the residents enjoy a scrumptious meal.

Soul Food Café
June is National Soul Food Month. Many foods will be
recognized with month-long celebrations and festivities.
National Soul Food Month is the time to recognize, celebrate, and educate the public about the culinary and cultural heritage of African-Americans. Global Poverty and
the Health Initiative, in partnership, will present a Soul
Food Café. The Soul Food Café will focus on healthy
preparation and samplings of soul food, as well as education. In addition, a resource table will be available with
information such as healthy recipes, websites, menu
planning, physical activity, etc.

RACE FOR THE CURE
Thanks to everyone who donated and/or participated in
the 2013 Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure. Zeta
Chi Omega exceeded their goal. The funds raised by the
ZXΩ team totaled $2,685.00. Thanks to the Team Captains, Sorors Starr Garrett and Joyce Brooks (pictured below) .
HOW TO BE DEBT-FREE1
Get the Facts
Collect all your account, loan and credit information and go
over the records with a fine-tooth comb. Write down the
monthly payment, debt amount, interest rate and term of
each debt on a sheet of paper. Order your Transunion,
Equifax and Experian Credit Reports and Credit Scores to
get a baseline.
Do the Math
Calculate how much you usually spend paying each debt
and how much interest that debt collects per month. Define which debts need to be paid off first. A "yes" answer
to any of the questions below is a red flag for accounts that
need immediate attention:
 Do you have any debts with high interest rates?
 Are there accounts above 35% of their credit limit?
 Do you have any debts that are close to being paid off?
 Do you have any debts with high annual fees?

Start working on those high-interest credit card debts first.
Call your creditors and negotiate lower interest rates or
move your balances to less expensive credit cards. If you
have a credit card debt that is too large to handle, consider
taking out a personal loan from your bank for the amount.
Our fundraising goal is $500, and at this point we must
work very hard to reach that attainable goal over the next

Refinance
After taking control of your credit card and small debts,
take a look at your major loans. Would it make sense to
refinance your mortgage? Could you consolidate some of
your other debts into the loan? What about refinancing
your automobile loan?
Also, we will need sorors to bring snacks, folding tables,
chairs, and the Sorority banner and tent for this event.

Sorors, thank you for your continued support of Heifer International. We have raised a total of $1,035.55 toward our goal of
$1,300. We will be purchasing an additional eight stoves,

which will bring our total contributions to date of 15 biogas
stoves to a community in need. Our Chapter has previously

donated the “Gift of Clean Water and 7 biogas stoves that will
allow a community to use animal waste/methane gases to fuel
their stoves in order to cook. Sorors, we are less than $300
away from our $1300 goal. Each of you has been so supportive of this endeavor and the help we are providing a community truly exudes the spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

The Archives Committee
is well on its way to completing our 12 goals this
year. We would appreciate your assistance in
Soror Monique Robinson collecting historical artifacts, old Ivyettes, pictures, etc. that can enhance our collection. Please continue to submit your committees’ flyers/programs that feature
Zeta Chi Omega's contributions to the community.
Archivist
There were numerous and profitable meetings about
this. We came to dedicate Carver Center and Soror
Evelyn's home as central meeting sites for those sorors
who gave time, talent and vision that this venture might
live.
It was altogether fitting and proper that we should do
this; but in a larger sense, we could not rush this task,
we could not violate our pledge, we could not overlook
protocol. Our founding sorors , living and dead, who
struggled here, had already prevailed far above our poor
power to add or detract.
We are working on Chapter photo albums. Please submit
any photos that you would like donate so that they can be
added to the chapter photo album.
Arlington and Alexandria will little note, nor long remember what we said here, but they will never forget what
we did here. It was for us, Alpha Kappa Alpha, rather to
be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us
- that from those founding sorors we gained increased
devotion to that cause for which they gave their last full
measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that
our efforts would not be in vain; that our collective
thoughts would bring a new burst of energy, and our
cherished dream would become a reality."

available for you to place the items you want to donate or
items you have "borrowed" and forgotten to return to the

Our anniversary, May 25, 2013, should have been a good
time to pause and reflect on some of the many beautiful
memories we have made and that we hold so dear. At this
time we will remember and salute our beloved, charming,
and ever so talented Golden Soror Mary L. Witten. Twenty

Chapter Retreat
The Standards Committee is looking forward to training its
members at the annual Chapter Retreat when we return
this coming September. We look forward to greeting you
back.

French?” Next month, the Sorority will convene in Montreal, Quebec-Canada for the Leadership Seminar from July
18-21, 2013, for “Leadership and Service: A Timeless

a physician for medical reasons.
Refrain from walking during the dais introductions, the
meditation, or while the Supreme Basileus is giving
her address to the delegation.
Respect designated seating sections, i.e. Diamond
and Golden sorors, physically-challenged sorors, special guests not seated on the dais, and delegates.
Turn off all electronic communication devices that will
interrupt the meeting. If you must use the phone,
please step out of the meeting.
Stand when Former Supreme Basilei and the Supreme Basileus enter the room and when they are
introduced. Stand for the Regional Director at Regional Conferences.
Speak after being recognized by the presiding officer.
Address the presiding officer as “Madame Supreme
Basileus” or “Madame Regional Director.” Keep remarks brief and concise and project voice or move to
a microphone so everyone can hear.
Adequate seating will be available for all sorors on a
first-come, first-served basis. Seat holding is unacceptable.
The 2013 Election of Officers will be held on Saturday,
November 2, 2013 to vote seven sorors into leadership
positions within our Chapter. In addition, the Chapter
must elect four sorors to serve on the 2014-2015 Nominating Committee. You have a significant role in this decision
-making process; the Nominating Committee members will
be counting on Chapter members to self-nominate or assist us in identifying qualified candidates who are willing to
serve in the upcoming vacant positions.

that due to a technical “glitch,” some of the Golden Soror
photos were omitted from the presentation. Just know

NPHC—NoVA Committee
The National Pan-Hellenic Council is wrapping up another
great year. On Sunday, May 19th, the Council hosted its
annual Black Scholars Program in which they honored African American high school seniors in the Northern Virginia
area. Scholarships were awarded to several students and
students heard inspirational words from several outstanding speakers.
Upcoming events are:
The Tupperware Fundraiser has been extended until June
11th. Items ordered from the Fundraising Catalog will garner the Council 40% of the proceeds. Items ordered from
the regular catalog will garner the Council 10% of the proceeds. If you are interested in placing an order, please

The Annual Cookout will be held on Sunday, June 23,
2013 at Anderson Field at Fort Belvoir. The cookout will
be held from 2:00 -7:00 PM. Soror Angela Turner is chairing this event so please come out and support her and socialize with fellow sorors and fraters.! If you have questions regarding the cookout, please contact Soror Angela
Turner.
The Pan-Hellenic Council meets on the first Tuesday of
every month (except in July and August and unless otherwise stated) at the Lee Center.
