The Classical Road Show Year 5 and 6 travelled to London on Monday to hear The Classical Road Show at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. This year’s performance was Widecombe Fair, an action-packed musical tale of smugglers and wrecking on the Devon coast in early Victorian times, featuring a quick-thinking hero, Uncle Tom Cobleigh and his wicked gang…and a dancing horse! The children took part in a unique musical theatre experience performed by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, professional actors and dancers. The first part of the morning was spent practising with the orchestra and learning a little about the music and instruments. We even heard a Stradivarius violin worth a million pounds. After the rehearsal, the lights dimmed and the performance began. The children did a wonderful job performing their songs. It was a brilliant interactive musical experience. Workaid Plea WORKAID is a charity which gathers old, rusted, unused or blunt tools which they recondition and send to help African communities in great need. Rugby v Aldro U9A won 15 - 5 A really good performance to end the season. Our rucking was much better and our tackling was superb. Aldro had some good runners but our defence was strong. Our tries were scored by Jonathan McFall, Charlie Curran and Edward Webb. Good team effort boys. PD Team: Peter Washer, Jonathan McFall (1), Josh Benton, James Newton, Connor Dyason, Charlie Curran (1), Harvey Rice, Finlay Harriss, Edward Webb (1) U9B lost 10 - 25 Yateley Manor displayed positive running and good rucking skills in this match but unfortunately our tackling skills had been left in the changing room. Aldro scored three tries in the first five minutes before Yateley Manor took control of the game and were rewarded when Connor Plummer-Colom scored a try. Our second try started from a ruck on the half way line. Brandon Tan’s evasive running took him to within a metre of the try line and a quick offload to Connor took the ball to the try line where they hit an Aldro defensive wall. Brandon received the ball again and stepped over to score. Great team work boys. KJ Team: Sam Ballentine, Gavin Simpson, Jack Partridge, Connor Plummer-Colom (1), Griffen Human, Matty Knowles, Brandon Tan (1), Sam MacRobbie, Monty Morrison, Alex Charles, Sam Rowe Years 7 and 8 Visit Ieper This year marks the centenary of the start of World War 1 with Great Britain declaring war against Germany on 4 August 1914. To understand the background to the Great War Yateley Manor pupils from years 7 and 8 visited Ieper in Belgium on 8 and 9 March 2014. The visit started with a tour of the In Flanders Field Museum in Ieper. The Museum collection reflects the moving picture of the destruction of the town, the misery and distress felt by soldiers and civilians during the war. The remainder of the afternoon was spent visiting the Yorkshire Trench and the military cemeteries at Essex Farm, Langemark, a German cemetery, and Tynecot. Essex Farm cemetery is where the Canadian Colonel John McCrae served as a physician and where he wrote the famous poem ‘In Flanders Field’ which the pupils read aloud. Tynecot is the largest military cemetery in Europe with nearly 12,000 Commonwealth personnel buried there. Saturday evening the party attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ieper which takes place every night of the year at eight o’clock. During the ceremony Alex Ball laid a wreath on behalf of the school and in memory of his great great uncle Rifleman Frederick Wilson one of over 54,000 people who are commemorated on the Memorial. Sunday started with a visit to the Brandhoek Military Cemetery to the west of Ieper and includes the grave of Captain Noel Chavasse. Captain Chavasse was a British surgeon and the only person to be awarded two Victoria Crosses in World War 1. The next stop was at Talbot House in Poperinghe or Pops as the town is more popularly known. Talbot House was a soldiers’ retreat from the fighting and for the pupils brought to life Michael Morpurgo’s book ‘Private Peaceful’. Sadly egg, ham and chips were not available. The afternoon included a visit to the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke a village to the east of Ieper. The highlight of the Museum is an underground dugout tunnel with communications, a dressing post, headquarters, work places and dormitories. A breath taking experience of how the British soldiers had to live underground like moles because there was nothing left above. The final visit was to the 14-18 Plugstreet Experience which gave pupils the chance to discover, through a human, interactive and moving approach, the living conditions and the major events that civilians and soldiers endured in this region that was devastated by the battles of the 4 year occupation. All in all, a busy, but thoroughly enjoyable visit and learning experience that the pupils will long remember. Joe French, Governor and Deputy Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Staff Profile - Jackie Hopwood What do you do at Yateley Manor? I have been a teaching assistant in Pre-Prep but I have recently started a new role as PA to the Headmaster. What did you do before working here? I had a very interesting role in desktop publishing designing brochures for a company specialising in sports travel in Twickenham. Part of my job was to visit possible new sporting fixture venues - Singapore was one of them! How long have you been here? 10 years Where in the world do you want to go and see and why? Rio to see the carnival and then a boat trip down the Amazon. What is the best advice you have been given? My mum always said above all, be happy! What is the strangest thing that has happened to you? I was persuaded by my family and a friend to try an open water swim in a wetsuit in a lake with ducks passing my head and weeds tangling around my feet – I very nearly drowned them all as I hated every minute. Is there anyone who inspires you/is your hero? My husband Martin for representing Great Britain in the World Triathlon Championships in Beijing especially as he only started when he was 50! If you had to do a job other than this one, what would it be (regardless of qualification or skills needed) A journalist like David Attenborough making documentaries from exotic places around the world. What is your favourite book? The Masterchef Cook book as I love to try and create some of the recipes even though they never look or taste anything like them! What is your favourite film and why? The Holiday – I love Cameron Diaz and its so romantic. What music do you like listening to at the moment? Bob Marley as I am planning on going to Jamaica this year but most of the time I like Rhianna and various chart topping sounds. Have you met any celebrities? Brian May and Gary Lineker when we were invited to the re-launch of a local pub owned by Tim Weatherspoons brother (owner of the huge Weatherspoon chain of pubs). If you could drive any car, what would it be? Aston Martin Batman or Superman? Superman – who wouldn’t want to fly! Custard or Cream? Ambrosia Devon Custard out of a tin – never my homemade! Cats or Dogs? Dogs and Horses Money or Happiness? Happiness - just as my mum always use to say! Minimus Latin Competition (continued) When we arrived at Cantell College, the children were excited to see at last Diana Sparkes, the organiser, who had recorded their practice CDs for them. They were even more excited to be introduced to the judge of the competition, Barbara Bell, the author of their Minimus textbook. The children had been rehearsing their plays for some weeks, working hard at their pronunciation and actions, and had performed a successful dress rehearsal in assembly that morning. So it was no surprise that their performances were excellent. They watched with interest the interpretations of other schools, who also had some lovely ideas for the acting. After tea, the children returned to their seats to listen to the results. Barbara Bell made interesting and useful comments on pronunciation and acting. She was looking not just for accuracy of pronunciation but evidence of understanding and also gave marks for presentation. She was impressed by the accuracy of pronunciation and the acting ability of the Yateley Manor children. She made particular mention of the effective acting of Alex Emery as the lioness in Pyramus and Thisbe and of the excellent pronunciation of Millie Blackburn as the mirror in Snow White. The children were thrilled to gain second place and silver medals for Ulysses and the Sirens and first place with gold medals for Pyramus and Thisbe and Snow White. This is probably Yateley Manor’s best result in this competition, and a just reward for all the children’s hard work. At the end of the competition, the children were thrilled to pose for a photograph with Barbara Bell, which she plans to put on the Minimus website. Thank you to the parents who came to watch. It was lovely to have you there, and the children really appreciated your support. Thank you, too, to Mrs Bell for helping with the props and to Mrs Kingcombe for all her help with rehearsals and for accompanying the children on the trip. (Thank also to Sheila Conway for all her work rehearsing the children and sorting out costumes - Ed). Spring Concert and Music Technology Competition Tuesday’s Spring Concert was a wonderful evening of music with the theme On Broadway which featured Years 7 and 8 along with ensembles and soloists. The Orchestra began the evening playing The Muppet Show which was followed by the eagerly anticipated Music Technology Competition. All the Year 7 and 8 children had during music lessons, either individually or in twos and threes, taken the same 37 second clip of the opening from the Sound of Music film and then customised it. They started by removing the sound and then applied new music and sound effects of their choice before creating their own set of credits and renaming the film putting their own stamp on it. Each clip was played for the audience who then had to choose and vote for their favourite. Once the voting was completed the Samba Band gave a rhythmic performance of The Yateley Samba and the Wind Band played an enjoyable Mary Poppins Medley. Manor Singers sang a set of songs from The Lion King, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Grease, two of which featured fantastic solos from Paige Norton-Edwards and Louis Sims, who performed in style in a flowing multi-coloured coat. Other solos during the evening were performed by Deena Shawkat (Voice), Harry Young (Piano), Matthew Williams (Clarinet), Phoebe Moore (Voice) and William Smith (Voice). At the end of the evening Rob Williams announced the results of the Music Technology Competition: First Prize : Boom Goes the Banana by Sam Russell Second Prize :A Film So Secret, Even the Name was an Afterthought by Tom Sloan and Jonathan Findell Third Prize: Trek Wars by Ben Hodgkiss and Wrecking Morrow by Louis Sims and Alex Ball Congratulations to all of Years 7 and 8 for their hard work and superb clips and in particular to the prize winners and the evening’s soloists. U11 and U12 IAPS Netball Regional Tournament, Port Regis The National IAPS Netball Competition is split up into 6 different regions around the country. Each school is asked to select a region in which to compete to qualify for a place in the National finals. Yateley Manor headed down to Dorset and Port Regis School for both of our qualifying competitions. U11 The U11 competition had entries from 27 schools from the Hampshire and surrounding counties. These were split into three groups of nine with the top four teams qualifying for the National Finals later in the month. We therefore had to play eight matches during the day and finish in the top three of our group to get through to the knockout phase. It was a tough ask for any team considering the standard of netball on display, but the Yateley Manor girls played some of the best netball they have ever played. Throughout the day each member of the team contributed to the team performance. We scored in every game, used the space well and the play flowed superbly when going forward. Elouise Ridgwell and Millie Pearson, who were outstanding in their positions, deserve a special mention as does Madison Aumonier, from Year 5, who played GA and fitted into the team as if she had always played with them. The girls worked hard, gave their all and came away with their heads held high knowing they had done their best in every game. Well done girls. RE Team: Emma Hopper, Madison Aumonier, Anna Ball, Gemma Lane, Serena Lu, Sophie Allison, Elouise Ridgwell, Millie Pearson, Lizzie Roughton U12 The U12 event had a different format as only nine schools entered. All the teams played each other in a round robin competition with the top two teams qualifying for the National Finals. The U12 girls had the ability to do well and were looking forward to the event. It was, however, literally as though two different teams turned up. In some matches we worked hard to gain possession but gave the ball away too easily and found it difficult to convert the chances created against teams we would normally beat. In other matches the team were incredible and pushed the two best team at the tournament all the way; at one point leading the eventual winners 3 - 0. In these games the Yateley Manor girls were as good as, if not better than, any of the U12 teams competing and they were an absolute joy to watch. Our inconsistency, however, cost us too many defeats and we didn't manage to finish in the top two. If the girls can keep their focus next year and play all their games to the standard that I know we can who knows what we can achieve. RE Team: Phoebe Moore, Francesca Courtney, Emily Dunseath, Anna McFall, Izzy Harper, Ella Haffey, Emily Treacher, Annabella Thurston
