All eyes on...
round 33.13 per cent voter turnout has been recorded till 12 pm in 49 Assembly constituencies of
Bihar in a peaceful atmosphere. The highest turnout
has been recorded for Jamui district at 40.77 per cent
and the least has been for Khagaria at 30.55 per cent.
The polling for the first phase started slow, with a turnout of 7.2 per cent till 8 am, 12.82 per cnet till 9am and
20.15 per cent till 10am, but picked up in the following
hours, with 27.34 per cent till 11 am.
Voter turnout would be a crucial part as Bihar has
seen a low turnout in the past. In the general election
last year, Bihar saw a turnout of only 56.26 per cent as
opposed to the national average of 66.44 per cent. In the
2010 Assembly elections, the State recorded a turnout
of 52.67 per cent and in the Assembly election previous
to that in 2005, the turnout was merely 45.85 per cent.
In Mumbai, Shiv Sena activists today smeared black
paint on ORF chairman Sudheendra Kulkarni’s face
for refusing to cancel former Pakistan foreign minister
Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri’s book launch.
‘When I got out of my home this morning, a group
of Shiv Sainiks stopped my car. When I came out,
they smeared me with black paint. They abused me,’
Kulkarni alleged and said that his Observer Research
Foundation (ORF), a foreign policy think-tank, will go
ahead with the planned book launch by Kasuri later
today despite the attack.

flagged off 422 new buses and 18
small buses at the Secretariat here.
The total cost of the vehicles was Rs
100.18 crore.
An official release here said the government led by Jayalalithaa has been
taking various steps to address the
transportation needs of the people.
Pointing out that transport plays a key
role in the development of the State,
it said the government has launched
new buses and new routes among
other things.
‘As part of the efforts, Jayalalithaa
today flagged off 50 buses for women
and children in 23 routes and four
buses in four new routes for the
Metropolitan Transport Corporation,
202 buses for State Express Transport Corporation, 25 buses for State
Transport Corporation - Coimbatore,
63 buses for State Transport Corporation - Tirunelveli and 78 buses for
State Transport Corporation - Salem.

Sairam Engineering College even
went on the rampage at the institution where there had been trouble
with the rules.

between a parent and the management of a prominent Anglo-Indian
School in the city has intensified
with the latter accusing the former
of allegedly defaming the institution.
It can be noted that the school imposed a fine of Rs 500 on a student

‘Earlier, parents were in favour of
the rules as they felt that their ward
would not go astray in such schools.
But the fact is that there is a change
in trend and they are slowing questioning the silly rules,’ he pointed out.

The Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal
Sciences University (TANUVAS) is
leading in cutting-edge technology while
handling many issues through its research farm, and bringing out innovative
products including on the fodder front.
This reporter headed to the university’s research unit at Madhavaram

in 2012.’ He said, systems there
are designed to irrigate a minimum
of 10,000 acres. ‘On coming here,
I had to re-design the sprinkler to
suit Indian farms which are smaller
in size. That’s what led to this innovation.’
The sprinkler can be connected to
a water source through a pipe and
water is sprayed. It has 16 sprinklers
which can sprinkle 208 litres of water in a minute. Each sprinkler can
cover an area of four feet. It takes
approximately 30 minutes to irrigate
one acre.
In another handy innovation, he
said ‘when it comes to protecting
piglets from succumbing to pressure
exerted by mother on them, we have
come out with yet another innovation
called ‘farrowing crate’.
The crate comes with a dimension
of 6x7 ft. There is a tendency for
the mother pig to exert pressure by
rolling which can prove fatal for the
piglets. ‘Ten days before delivery,
we place the pigs in the crate: rods
here never allow the mother pig to
completely relax on the floor to exert
pressure,’ he explained.
It creates creep area for 10 to 12
inches from the floor and about 10
to 12 inches from the wall, taking
advantage of which the piglets can
escape, said Gnanaraj. This native
version is available at Rs 3,500 while
an imported crate can cost about Rs
26,000, he said.

The machine is 16-feet wide and
30-feet long with the total capacity of fodder production being
eight tonnes.
There is a two-tonne air-conditioner inside and a 5,000-litre water
tank under it which can supply cool
water to the unit. Seeds like cowpea,
bajra, jowar, sun hemp are put on
trays and kept on the rods inside
the machine.
The sprinklers inside supply water
to the seeds once in three hours,
prompting them to sprout. The fodder can be used to feed all kinds of
livestock. The feed generated is in
the form of a mat, so there will be
no wastage, he says.

a meal. Patient develops symptoms
of low sugar owing to constant secretion, said Palaniappan.
So the patient gets a habit of
constant eating every two hours to
prevent hypoglycaemia. Insulinoma
patients will have symptoms like
sweating, hunger, tremors, fainting.
A team of five doctors performed extensive surgery for seven hours and
removed the tumor. ‘While a surgery
of this sort costs about Rs 7 lakh, we
did this for free,’ Palaniappan said.

omen are about to break the glass ceiling in the Indian Air
Force’s most glamorous and demanding stream of fighter pilots. It should be a matter of time before India catches up with Pakistan
which has already inducted four women as fighter pilots. This was not
an off-the-cuff decision but followed several Defence Ministry studies
recommending their induction. One study concluded that as women are
not medically inferior to men, they could fly fighter aircraft, drive tanks
or sail in warships. About 50 women pilots in the IAF fly transport
planes, some of them giant enough to give the Jumbos a complex, as
well as helicopters on supply and rescue mission. But they are excluded
from missions that involve helicopters taking up combat roles.
The decision also implies that these women will be permanent commission officers. This means in future they could be aspirants for top
posts in the IAF. But the more difficult decision of inducting women in
combat roles in the Army is pending probably due to myths regarding
rape and torture of female prisoners as well as issues of pregnancy. The
green signal for women fighter pilots has been easier because the fighting is from the confines of a cockpit where issues regarding the hyper
masculine military subculture are absent.
The counter-argument is that women fighter pilots might baulk at
bombing targets out of their so-called abhorrence for blood. This misses
the point that the selection of fighter pilots is among the most demanding. Aspirants are minutely screened for physical fitness and mental
strength before being accepted for initial training. As is the case with
men fighter pilots, women not displaying the required aptitude could be
transferred to the transport and helicopter streams. As far as their induction in front-line combat roles is concerned, it will be more prudent to
wait for studies being conducted in this regard by other countries and
then take a call. For now, women can exult that the 1992 opening up of
armed service for women is now reaching its logical conclusion.

that Microsoft is developing an exclusive Dialler app for Indian audiences. The new Dialer is in line with
the company’s announcement of
the start of closed beta testing for
its Indian version of Skype.
With this app, Microsoft is aiming
at markets facing slow Internet issues. So, it isn’t surprising that the
company has chosen India for test-
ing the app. The company reportedly plans to test the app in India and
later roll it out to other markets too.
The company also plans to release
a Windows Phone app next year.
For now, it is still unclear if the
Dialer app will support video calling capability. However, the report
does mention supporting video
sharing in some format. The app
will work on 3G and also slower 2G
network.
The new Dialer app is expected to

account details but also for communications between the bankers and

A number of such codes, including
‘iTunes’ and ‘gas’ for funds and ‘download’ for instruction to transfer the money
are coming to the fore after a number of
banks signed settlement agreements
with the US tax authorities.

Kingfisher Airlines had allegedly
diverted a substantial chunk of Rs
4,000 crore in loans secured from
public sector banks to tax havens
which has now come under the scanner of the CBI that has expanded its
probe in the matter.

that the airlines, which stopped
flights in October 2012, has allegedly diverted part of loans taken
from 11 nationalised banks, with
total exposure of Rs 4,000 crore,
to tax haven countries for different
purposes not specified in loan applications, sources claimed.

bank to loans received from 10 other

Reports 9.8% increase in consolidated profit
Bangalore, Oct 12 (PTI):
Country’s second largest software
services firm Infosys today posted 9.8
per cent increase in consolidated net
profit to Rs 3,398 crore for the quarter
ended 30 September, 2015.
The city-based firm had reported
a net profit of Rs 3,096 crore in the
year-ago period.
Consolidated revenue was up 17.2
per cent to Rs 15,635 crore in the said
quarter from Rs 13,342 crore in the
year-ago period, the company said in
a filing to the BSE.
Infosys had reported a net profit of
Rs 3,030 crore and revenues of Rs
14,354 crore for the April-June quarter of this financial year.
For 2015-16, the company gave a
revenue guidance of 13.1 per cent to
15.1 per cent in rupee terms. In dollar
terms, the company forecast growth
of 6.4 per cent to 8.4 per cent.

Corporates can allocate Rs 20,000
-25,000 crore for their social responsibility initiatives, but there is a need
for greater sensitisation for the companies to give back to the society,
says non-profit organisation Smile
Foundation.
‘As the CSR spending is still not
completely mandatory for the corporate yet, we expect a surge in the
coming years when companies start
witnessing the changes that start
taking place at the grassroot levels’,
Smile Foundation co-founder Santanu Mishra said.
On the number of corporates who
have mandated Smile Foundation for
their CSR activities this year, Mishra
said ‘.. in total, be it a big or small
support, around 100 corporates supported us last year alone, including
Ericsson India, Canara HSBC OBC
Life Insurance and Indigo’.

E-retailers sales
flouting
FDI norms: CAIT

Traders body CAIT has alleged
that e-commerce firms such as
Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal
are violating FDI norms by holding
forthcoming festive season sales
and it has complained to the Commerce Ministry.
‘These companies solicit general
public into their respective sales
by big advertisement campaign
on print, electronic and social
media... the advertisements addressed to the public in general
tantamount to retail trading’, Confederation of All India Traders said
in a statement on Sunday.
It added: ‘These companies claim to be a marketplace and therefore can
provide only a technology
platform for the sellers
who are registered with
them. Since ownership of
inventory does not hold
by the said companies
they can not offer ‘sale’
or ‘discounts’ in totality
on their online portals but
they are doing so which
also establishes that they
are not marketplace and
as such openly flouting

Kalyani Group said Hyosung T&D India, a subsidiary of the South Korean
major Hyosung Corporation, will set up its greenfield manufacturing facility

related accessories using state of art technology for domestic markets and
thus contributing in enhancement of the electrical transmission efficiency
and reliability’, Kalyani Group said in a statement.
It further said: ‘Hyosung has leased about 14 acres of land to set up its
project and plan to go in production by June, 2016’.
Flipkart opens fulfilment
centre near Gurgaon
E-commerce giant Flipkart announced the opening of a fulfilment centre in
Luhari, close to Gurgaon, to meet the growing needs for consumer electronics and durables in the northern region. With this new facility, Flipkart now
has a total of 17 warehouses covering 1.5 million square feet of storage
capacity across the country, the company said in a release.
It said this warehouse has been primarily set up to stock consumer electronics and durables like TVs, washing machines, refrigerators, ACs and
microwave ovens.
Stating that the new facility has a total storage capacity of close to five
lakh cubic feet spread over one lakh square feet, Flipkart said the service
would facilitate quicker deliveries of consumer electronics and durables to
the northern parts of the country.

Yamuna river
Agra, Oct 12 (PTI):
Hundreds of river activists and environmentalists organized a walk demanding release of water in Yamuna
and speed up cleaning programmes to
save the river from further degradation.
The march, a part of the River Connect Campaign, commenced from
Haathi Ghat near Agra Fort to Etmauddaula view point park last night.
Dr Devashish Bhattacharya, an
environmentalist, said the march was
organized to draw attention towards
receding water levels of the river which
also pose a threat to the foundation of
Taj Mahal. ‘We need a minimal flow of
water in the river not only for drinking,
but also for the safety of the Mughal
monuments along its banks,’ he said.
Dr Anand Rai, ex-NASA scientist,
said Yamuna was a repository of
culture and religion. ‘Its reduction to a
sewage canal was a matter of serious
concern,’ he said.

Noted Kashmiri writer and poet
Ghulam Nabi Khayal has joined the
bandwagon of authors returning their
Sahitya Akademi awards, saying the
minorities in the country today feel
‘unsafe and threatened’.
‘I have decided to return the award.
The minorities in the country are feeling unsafe and threatened. They feel
their future is bleak,’ Khayal told.
Khayal, who won the prestigious
honour for his book ‘Gashik Minaar’
(Luminaries) in 1975, said he would
soon return the cash prize and copper
plaque to the Akademi.
‘The government has failed in fulfilling its duty of protecting the minorities
as enshrined in the Constitution of the
country,’ he said.
‘I cannot witness such worst situa-

ODI against South Africa, India’s Amit
Mishra is keen to hold on to his ODI
spot after an impressive return to the
limited-overs field here.
Mishra made his presence felt
in the five-run loss against the
visitors on Sunday with the allimportant wickets of Hashim Amla
and David Miller. The Delhi-born
player, who has made a place for
himself in the Test squad, now
wants to become an ODI regular
as well. Before the match at Green
Park, Mishra last played an ODI
against West Indies last year.
‘It is a great feeling to come back
into the ODI side and straightaway
put up a good bowling performance,’ Mishra told BCCI.TV.
‘From here on I would only look
to better my performances if I get
a chance in the forthcoming ODIs.
I feel whenever you play for India
you need to have self confidence.
Irrespective of the fact that you
are taking wickets or not; the most
important thing is to bowl well and

‘I believe I am bowling well at

ormer cricketer Brett Lee is
turning full-time actor with IndoAustralian romantic comedy, unINDIAN and he says he is excited
about the film, which is set to hit the
screens on 15 October.
The former fast bowler will be
sharing screen with Indian actress
Tannishtha Chatterjee in the film
which has been helmed by Sydneybased Indian director and producer
Anupam Sharma.
I am super excited about the
movie and I m very pleased that it
is all done and dusted now, Lee told
PTI at the red carper launch of the
film in Melbourne.
We think there is a great message
in the film that love has no bounda-
ries. My character has fallen in love
with a beautiful Indian woman, Lee
said. Lee revealed he took a fiveweek acting camp with vocal specialist Bill Pepper and acting expert
Kevin Jackson in Sydney in order
to prepare for the role.
I did take four or five weeks acting coaching before the shooting of
the film. Little bit of crash course,
Lee said. One of the most popular
Australian cricketer in India, who
has managed to say a dialogue
in Hindi in the film, said he would
love to go down the track of acting
career.
There are few offers from other
Bollywood directors and I would
love to go down the track. However,

Keerthy in Mani’s film

irziya actress Saiyami Kher,
who was last seen in Telugu
film Reya, has reportedly bagged a
role in ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s
next yet-untitled Tamil-Telugu bilingual, which features Karthi and Nani
in the lead.
Saiyami is not playing the second
lead, but she has been roped in for
a brief role. Nothing more is known
about her role as of now, a source
from the film’s unit said.
The project, which features Nithya
Menon as the female lead, has gone
through lot of changes in the last
couple of months.
It was initially planned as a Tamil
revenge drama and was slated to go

‘Discussions have been going
on for a while and a script will be

script by A R Murugadoss. It will
