C
hange is not new to Pickerington. In fact, even our name
has been changed. Once christened “Jacksonville” in honor of
General Andrew Jackson townsfolk
petitioned the Ohio state legislature
to change the name to Pickerington in 1827. Town founder Abraham
Pickering helped develop a community legacy of learning that continues
today when he set aside a lot in the

purposes. That charming Olde Village area is now home to shops and
restaurants housed in quaint historic
buildings.
Right in the heart of the village stands
an original Carnegie Library funded
in 1912 by a Carnegie foundation
grant. With a population of only 300,

small to qualify for the grant. But the
persistent committee members were
creative and convinced the Carnegie
foundation to include the population
of surrounding Violet Township to
achieve the needed 1000 souls. This
persistent community attitude prevails to this day.
People of Pickerington welcome new
challenges and opportunities, while
maintaining a strong sense of community. There is an openness and
friendly atmosphere in Pickerington.
Community organizations abound
and residents are involved in a wide
range of activities.

The City Parks and Recreation department coordinates the hugely
popular Haunted Village where you’ll
see hundreds of costumed goblins
enjoying hayrides, haunted houses
and trick-or-treating at the local
shops. The Pickerington Christian
Ministerial Association sponsors the
local food pantry. And a group of volunteers organizes the annual Violet
Festival with headliner music and
family entertainment.
Reminiscent of agricultural roots, the
Olde Village Farmers’ Market brings
residents and farmers together
Thursday evenings in the summer to
shop and share crops, baked goods
and homemade treats. And the Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce
sponsors numerous community
events such as the popular Taste of
Pickerington each year.
From organized youth athletics and a
skate park to a disc golf course and
senior square dancing, Pickerington
has what you need if you’re interested in an active lifestyle. Pickerington
Ponds Metro Park and the Blacklick
Creek Greenway Trail provide for hiking, running and biking. This 12-mile
multi-use trail continues to develop
and expand to connect Pickerington
to the wider Metro Parks trail system.
The rural feel here is appealing to residents who also want close proximity
to Columbus sophistication. There’s
easy access to professional and collegiate sporting venues, Broadway productions and concerts, world class
health care facilities, and numerous
colleges, universities and educational centers.

Then, City of Pickerington leaders garnered
grant monies to bring the 5-lane Diley

Access to quality education
may be Pickerington’s
brightest attraction
A
cademics are a cornerstone in Pickerington’s tradition of excellence. In 20122013, the Pickerington Local School
District (PLSD) met 24 out of 24 state indicators on the Ohio Department of Education
Report Card. The district also achieved a 95%
4 year graduation rate surpassing nearby districts such as Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, and
Worthington.
Many families move here simply for the
School District. More than 10,000 students
are educated in Pickerington, making it the
15th largest school district in Ohio.

Additionally, in just the past 5 years, Pickerington graduates have earned $58.9 million
in scholarships. In part because of superior
educators. Over 80% of PLSD teachers have
master’s degrees.
The District mission is to “provide children an

socially responsible citizens.”
Continuing that mission has Pickerington
looking to the future. The District was recently
awarded The Pathways to Prosperity and
Race to Top grants in conjunction with neighboring school districts. These grants will assist
in addressing changing education standards.
“As students can look up basic information via
the internet, we as educators need to teach
our students how to think critically, read
critically, analyze critically, and problem solve
critically. More activities need to be more into
problem-based learning, where a student
is given a problem and they have to work
through the issue to come to a solution,” said
Brian Seymour- PLSD Department of Teaching

Numerous clubs, prominent athletic, artistic,

additional opportunities.
In the past 10 years the district has won at

C
entral Ohioans are surprised to learn
that Pickerington and Violet Township combined is home to about
40,000 people. These population numbers are greater than those for the cities
of Delaware, Westerville or Gahanna – and
approaching the size of Dublin. The Pickerington region is growing and prosperous,
but like these other premier suburban
communities, retains its small town Midwestern appeal.
The tree-lined city even boasts a quaint
historic downtown village; an assortment
of restaurants, antique, retail shops, and
boutiques; a movie theatre; golf course;

more.
All of these close and convenient amenities contribute to Pickerington’s ranking
as one of the fastest-growing communities in central Ohio last year by Columbus Business First, according to Development Services Director Joe Henderson.
The Pickerington area has a full range of housing options to serve its growing population.
Pickerington area neighborhoods also offer a variety of housing options from affordable ranch and two-story attached
condos, single family homes, and multimillion dollar mansions.
HER Realtor Marian Reitano has lived in
Pickerington for 44 years, working with
new homebuyers for 34 of those years. “My
clients relocate to Pickerington for three
reasons: High-quality schools; proximity
to airports, shopping and medical care;
and better home values,” she explains.
“Buyers get more square footage and larg"/),10#,/1%"*,+"61%+,ƛ"/"!&++"&$%boring communities.”
According to census estimates, about 83
percent of the people who live in Pickerington own their homes and the average
home price is $188,500.
In 2013, 104 permits for new single family
homes were issued by the city to further develop the suburbs, and the city expects to
issue the same amount of permits in 2014.

Joe Henderson agrees, “We have a strong

I believe it is clear that Pickerington is truly
one of those communities. The quality of
