Historical Museum guests will be
greeted with new Main Level carpeting, new exhibits, and exciting
new programs when our Museum
opens for the 2015 season in April.

Thursday, April 2, 7:30pm:
Our first Historical Society meeting
of the year will be held in the
handicap-accessible Lower Level of
our Historical Museum. Pickerington railroad enthusiast, Jim Kehn,
will present “Railroads around Pickerington” featuring a show-and-tell
program that guests of all ages will
enjoy. Light refreshments will be
served, and our Society president
will present a short update.
Saturday, April 4, 10-3pm:
Weekly Saturday Open Houses at the
Historical Museum begin on this date.
Because April 4 coincides with Easter
weekend, our grand opening celebration will take place a week later, during the afternoon of April 11.
We invite members and others who
may be interested in serving as Saturday Museum Volunteers to stop by to
check us out Saturday, April 4, between 10-3pm. Veteran volunteers
will be on hand to answer questions,
give a short tour, and register volunteers for upcoming Saturday assignments. Volunteers also may contact
Museum Volunteer Coordinator,
Cristie Hammond, at 614-570-4074.

Museum. Moore’s Pool Hall, owned
by Walter and Wilma Moore, was
located at 18 E. Columbus Street
circa 1960 to 1983. This stove
recently was donated to our
Museum by Karen Zeller.
FREE PROGRAM: Saturday, April 11 ~ Noon-3:00 p.m.
Musical Afternoon at the Museum
See and hear music boxes, Victrolas, and an 1879 pump organ come to life!
Bring your guests and join Historical Society members — including Joan Heft, Cristie
Hammond, Maryann Macioce, Barbara Freeman, and Peggy Kose — who have
loaned their vintage and unusual music boxes to the Museum for an afternoon of
music and fun! Volunteers will entertain guests on the Museum’s two levels with
music box demonstrations and tunes on the Museum’s three vintage Victrolas: an
early 1900’s Edison cylinder phonograph, a Columbia Viva-Tonal “Grafonola”, and a
floor model Victor Talking Machine manufactured in 1916.
In addition, Jessica Heitmeyer (seen in photo) will play our Taber pump organ purchased by Mary Catherine Bowers Nessley in 1879. Light refreshments also will be served on the Museum’s Lower
Level from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed — phone Maggie Arendt, 614-507-6067, for information.

Friday, May 1, 6-8:30pm ~ Olde Village Chocolate Hop
This year, the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society Museum is partnering with the Olde Pickerington Village Business Association (OPVBA) to offer the annual “Chocolate Hop” in Olde Pickerington Village. The Museum
and other historic Olde Village businesses will each offer a special chocolate treat to guests who obtain a Chocolate
Hop map for a $5 donation. A limited number of maps are available, so reserve your space beginning April 2 at
either the Historical Museum or at Deblin Design, 18 E. Columbus St. Chocolate Hop proceeds will be shared by the
non-profit Historical Society for Museum repairs and upgrades and by the OPVBA for community events. If you’d
like to volunteer to help with this event, phone Maggie Arendt at 614-507-6067.
Thursday, May 7, 7:30pm ~ Old Time Medical Remedies
Do you know what “Swamp Root” was used to stimulate? Or what Strychnine
Phosphate Tonic and Pine Tar-Chloroform were supposed to cure? Historical
Society member Jack Whitaker, who started working in a drug store at age 13, will
present an interesting program about medicine before passage of the first
“Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act in 1938” and how safeguards have been
added over the years.

Men, women, and children ages 4 and over are invited
to an afternoon Tea Party at the Pickerington Senior Center.
Join the fun by wearing a hat to compete for prizes in our “Best Hat Contest”.
Buy $1 chances (6 for $5) for our “Tea Party Gift Raffle”.
Enjoy live music, a free historical gift, games, and a free family photo at our
“Photo Booth” hosted by David Beckham Photography.
Menu: assorted teas, lemonade, tea sandwiches and fabulous desserts.
Tickets: $10 (adults), $8 (children ages 4-12).
Seating is limited. Set-up will be tables of 8. No tickets sold after May 6.
Proceeds benefit Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society.

Thanks to the generosity of The South Central Power Foundation and the Violet Township Trustees, our Historical
Museum will open in April with new carpet covering its main level. Through donations generated from its “Operation
Round Up” program, South Central Power awarded a $3,500 grant at its January meeting; while the Violet Township
Trustees voted, during its March 4 meeting, to donate $3,000 to enable the project to move forward.
These donations will cover most of the $6,869 project bid from Solomon’s Carpet for the new carpet and installation.
The Historical Society will fund the remaining $369 project cost. The carpet replaces the 30-year old, threadbare
floor covering in our Museum’s main level. It will match the carpet installed in the lower level a few years ago by the
city of Pickerington.
Additional “Wish List” items the Historical Society Board of Directors hopes to accomplish during 2015-2016 through
fundraisers and donations include: (1) streamline the reception/gift shop area at the Museum entrance; (2) create
an “Olde Pickerington Village Walking Tour” brochure; (3) repair the loom to make it usable for demonstrations;
(4) create an animal pelt display; (5) secure a feasibility study on making the entire Museum handicap-accessible.

Kristi Huskey was appointed Membership Director by the
Historical Society’s Board of Directors. She replaces
Barbara Taylor who served in that position since 1996.

“I am the seventh generation of family born in Violet
Township, and my maiden name was Dunlap,” noted
Kristi. Violet Township Trustee, Terry Dunlap, is her
father. Kristi and husband, David Huskey, are in the
process of moving back to the family farm on Basil Western Road and purchasing her grandmother’s home.
“David is looking forward to a new pole barn. I look forward to being closer to my bee hives, establishing some
chickens and a real garden, and just sitting outside looking south and up at the ridge that I grew up with,” said
Kristi.

serves as Violet Township Fire
Department’s Executive Assistant, a position she has held
since 1993. She, husband
David Huskey, and son, Matt,
are PHS graduates.
“My goals on Historical Society
membership are to maintain the current number of
members, look for innovative ways to engage potential
new members, and bring in new types of membership
such as estate, trust, and giving/target memberships.
“I am a strong believer in using technology to bring a
younger generation into the important task of preserving the history of our community. I look forward to
brainstorming with other members on how we can accomplish that,” concluded Kristi.

Long-time Historical Society member, the Rev. Dr. Trygve Rolf Skarsten, passed away
November 14, 2014 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife (Ruth), 4 children and 11
grandchildren. Trygve earned degrees from Columbia University, Luther Theological
Seminary, University of Oslo, Princeton Theological Seminary, and University of Chicago
Divinity School. He served as a pastor, taught at colleges and seminaries, then retired
following his tenure as president of Trinity Lutheran College in Washington state.
Both Trygve and Ruth have been members of the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society for many years. In addition to donating countless volunteer hours at the
Museum, in 2008 Trygve researched and co-authored the historical book created for
Violet Township’s bicentennial celebration, Violet Township Through 200 Years, 18082008. Fellow members truly miss Trygve’s stories and good humor while working with him at Museum special events
and during Saturday Museum Open Houses.
