Stewardship Reflections
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
“For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first
who will be last.” Luke 13:30
Our standards in our society are so different from God’s
standards. We often rate or rank people by what they
have, how powerful they are, or how successful they
are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the
same earthly standards.
A menudo calificamos o damos
Tierra.
Reflections by Father Karl
21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today the second reading is again taken from Hebrews. St. Paul challenges the followers of Jesus to
accept the “trials” of their lives as “discipline.” We find these words difficult to accept because we
generally want things to go well in our lives and we certainly don’t want to be disciplined for our
transgressions. It seems that St. Paul is alluding to a basic truth: we must take responsibility for our
actions. When we do something wrong, there are always consequences. The “discipline” of which St.
Paul speaks is taking action to change. Sin can teach us something if we are willing to learn.
In the Gospel today Jesus is asked if “many will be saved.” Instead of giving a direct answer Jesus
then instructs the people about striving to enter the Kingdom of God. It is almost as if the man is
asking the wrong question—it is not so much whether many will enter the Kingdom of God; rather, the
point is that we should always strive for the Kingdom. If we are people who are intent on serving God
and finding the Kingdom we really don’t have time to worry about whether we are going to “make it.”
The real question for us is whether we are running away from condemnation and death or whether we
are running toward Christ and his Kingdom.
Jesus answers as he does because he wants to teach us how to live our lives. He is asking us to
adopt a different mindset—a different way of thinking. In the mind of Christ there is no room for
fear—only a desire to know and serve God.
