The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world. th Reflexiones de la Corresponsabilidad 190 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario "Porque donde esté tu tesoro, también allí estará tu corazón." Reflections by Father Karl 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time The second reading today from Hebrews deserves special attention. In this reading St. Paul first offers a definition of faith; that, in itself, is unusual. “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” These few words challenge us to seriously consider what and how we believe. We are asked to believe in something we cannot touch or see. So how do we believe? Faith, as described by St. Paul, is not simply blind faith. Faith is most often a choice we consciously make. Abraham and Sarah are used as examples in this reading: when Abraham was tested by God by being asked to sacrifice his own son there is no doubt that Abraham was confused and frightened. Yet, Abraham made the decision to obey God. Faith is a decision we make each day. Coming to Mass or going to confession is an act of faith. People have the freedom to do whatever they want and to go wherever they want: no one physically forces us to come to Mass, but still we come. Sometimes we feel that our faith is weak or nonexistent— nothing could be further from the truth. The fact that we struggle with such feelings means that we do indeed have faith. Sometimes we just don’t feel good about our faith. Our presence at Mass here today reveals something important about us. We come to Mass essentially because we seek the support and encouragement of the community. Trying to live a life of faith without other believers around us is impossible; we need the support and prayers of the Church. When we are surrounded by fellow believers it is possible to believe ourselves. In and around our parish...
