This event, which Bro. John Smith helped originate, has been replicated in 78 other major cities all over the United States. Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter sponsored a tent to serve as a temporary shelter for 32 homeless female veterans and their children. Many services are provided to the homeless veterans during this event. The U.S. Naval Hospital in Balboa Park set up a “field hospital” that is capable of conducting surgery just as they would in any combat area. In addition to the temporary housing and medical services, veterans received such services as “grooming” sponsored by the Cosmetology Department of San Diego City College, and legal services sponsored by the San Diego Superior Court System. The Stand Down also features entertainment for homeless veterans and play activities for their children. This the fourth year Alpha has provided this facility along with volunteers to assist in the overall program. This year, the event served over 700 veterans. Many of the folks that received these services in the past, return as “alumni” of the program and willingly serve as volunteers. This program really works to provide a ‘leg up’ to the homeless veterans of San Diego. It is a fact that San Diego County has the largest concentration of veterans in the nation: 287,000. Unfortunately, veterans represent about 30% of all homelessness in America, but less than 2% of all veterans are homeless. With so many veterans chosing to live in SD County, these numbers are some what skewed. Zeta Sigma Lambda take pride in being able to present this valuable service to the homeless veterans of the San Diego community. Alpha History AKA Scholarship Breakfast On the morning of June 18th, 2005, Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter, along with the Epxilon XI Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha held their annual Scholarship Breakfast at the Mission Valley Doubletree Hotel. The successful event was well attended by both Alpha brothers and AKA sisters, and guest speaker Municipal Court Joe Littlejohn spoke to the awardees about the virtues of scholarship to secure their futures. Many local high school students were presented with cash scholarships, including CAEP students Martin Smalls (attending U of Rhode Island), Kamal (going to U of New Hamphire), Abdul (attending UC-Riverside), and DeShawn and Michael (going to San Diego City College). Tandy Project Alpha Zeta Sigma Lambda conducted another successful Project Alpha on two occasions this spring, May 12th and June 16th, 2005 at The Charter School co-located with Neighborhood House Association’s 41st Street location. Produced with the support of the March of Dimes, this series of Project Alphas was attended by 12 participants in May and 19 participants in June. Brothers conducting the training/seminars were Brothers Long and Ross (one of the chapter’s newest Alphas). It should be noted that during the 2004 Western Regional Spring Intake, the aspirants received training on how to conduct a Project Alpha. Thus, Bro. Ross was well prepared to work on this project. Project Alpha is now accomplished in collaboration with the “Connections” Program which is a state-funded pregnancy prevention program designed for teenagers. The Program Director is Dr. Willie Lassiter. The Principal of this Charter requested that Alphas conduct more sessions for his students. This collaboration yielded better results because it was conducted as part of the school program and authorized by parents as part of the overall training that the students receive. The training film generated a good discussion among the students. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter P.O. In attendance were brothers Kelvin Ellis, Reggie Marbray (and wife Antonette), Don Long, Larry Sadler and Sam Bagwell. The group did the five mile walk through Balboa Park, raising $1,700.00 for the March of Dimes, the most ever donated by our chapter. The brothers solicited donations to sponsor their walk through the park. The monies raised are used to fight birth defects in infants. The March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon is one of our Fraternity’s national programs. As of July 13th, only 39 brothers have paid their chapter dues. Last year, we had 60 paid brothers. C’mon brothers, you all know the important work we do in the community. We need you to step up and contribute, even if you cannot attend the General Meeting. Thank you very much for your help. ©2005, ΖΣΛ Chapter, ΑΦΑ Fraternity, Inc. edited and published by Bro. Gary Nash contributions by Bro. Don Long and Bro.
