The Illuminator The Light of Alpha Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Volume 20 Issue 1 September 2011 New Day Dawns for Men of Alpha Rho Lambda His Honor Does the Honors — Bro. Judge W. Dwayne Maynard conducts the annual ceremony installing new Alpha Rho Lambda Chapter officers. The Franklin County Municipal Court jurist oversees the event in both legal and Alpha style. He is seeking re-election to his seat on the bench. Fraternal support is appreciated. With chapter elections and the convention season over, the summer is ending with the onset of a new fraternal year. The first activity was the 4th Annual Julian Lewis Alpha and Family cookout held on August 21, 2011 at Metzger Park in Westerville. There had been little time for recovery with the Midwestern Regional Convention in April, chapter elections in May, officer installation in June, followed by the General Convention in Chicago. The Illuminator Turns 20 B r o ther s o f Alpha Rho Lambda Chapter, it is my charge and my challenge to bring you our publication, The Illuminator. In 1991 I had the honor of serving as both the original editor and as the person responsible for the name. T ho u g h t he number of pages may vary from one issue to the next, it is my goal to always provide a quality document that reflects ΑΡΛs Alpha-style. Committee Chairmen and chapter officers are asked to provide reports on a consistent basis, to assist with having items placed in the chapter calendar. This same request applies to the College men. It is not and will not be enough to be noted only in this issue. We cannot support activities we are not aware of. We plan to be there for you and need you to openly work with us. Other items of interest by the general brotherhood of the chapter is always welcome. All commentary and feedback is welcome. Please forward desired information for publication to amnross@msn.com. Since April 30, 2011, with the loss of 75year member Bro. Lucien Wright, Brothers have conducted five Omega Services. Undaunted, the men of Alpha Rho Lambda are ready to serve and are gearing up for another successful fraternal year. Bro. Maynard Aiming for Six More in Court There Goes an Alphaman — Bro. Judge W. Clifford Tyree—9/25/1925-8/3/2011 (1951) Kappa How amazing and blessed we have been to have had among our membership some many stalwarts of the Central Ohio Community and members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. In a four-month timeframe, five Omega services were conducted by Brothers in honor of the new entrants to Omega Chapter. Among this group was an educator, a legislator, a physician, a veteran and an advocate. Between them years of membership were respectively: 75, 67, 62, 50 and 60, for a total of 309 years of service. Those we lost between April 30, 2011 and August 3, A true servant of all has led a stellar group of Alphadom into our Omega Chapter. Bro. Lucien “Bus” Wright was the first of those for whom Alpha Rho Lambda Brothers conducted the rite of passage in recent months. He was the most senior in age, 96, and most senior in membership, 75. He was elected as a vice-present, when Bro. Charles Wesley, was ending his term as General President. We will miss them all. 2011, included: Bro. Lucien Wright, our 5th Midwestern Regional Vice President; Bro. John Bowen, attorney and former Ohio State Senator; Bro. Alfred Jefferson, who helped bring over 2,000 infants into the world; Bro. Elbert “El Dawg” Williams, Korean War veteran and federal government servant; and Bro. Clifford Tyree, advocate for juvenile offenders and a local civil rights icon. Each had a dignity and greatness that truly reflected the legacy of leadership Alphas advocate they emulate. May we all be thankful for not only their service, but respectful of the example they provided. Looking back -- The photo to the left was provided by Mrs. Gloria Jefferson, widow of Bro. Dr. Al Jefferson. Her kindness in providing this item, as well as the thanks from the families for the Omega Services is appreciated. What appears was taken from the March 1934 issue of The Sphinx. Alpha & Nation Honors Our Brother and His Dream His was the dream of a nation united in the cause of equality. As there were some who thought that high ideal died with him on April 4, 1968, some of his fraternity brothers felt differently, In their fallen leader they did not see the end of a movement, but it took time to see how to quantify the achievements of that brother’s brief 39 years. How to adequately address the magnitude of the life of Bro. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would not be determined until one day in 1983, when some of his Alpha Phi Alpha brothers decided a national memorial is what the nation needed. The idea was led by Bro. George Sealey, of Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter, who was joined by Brothers Alfred Bailey, Oscar Little, Eddie Madison and John Harvey. Their seed of a proposal was presented at the January 1984 fraternity Board of Directors meeting during the administration of Bro. Ozell Sutton. It was an interesting coincidence that Sutton was the General President at that time. Thirteen years earlier he was in the room next door to Bro. King at the Lorraine Motel, when the civil rights icon was assassinated. That idea became a proposal. That proposal was presented before Congress who granted permission to move forward. It was then signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton in 1996. From there the wrangling began over locations, followed by architectural presentations, followed by fundraising that led to construction. It culminated with a magnificent edifice that acknowledged the life of one man, the will of one organization, the power of one movement, and the true spirit of brotherhood that exists in Americans as a people.
