John Smith helped to spearhead the Veterans Stand Down for 2004 on the campus of San Diego High School. This event, which originated in San Diego, has been replicated in 32 other major cities all over the United States. As in years past, Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter sponsors a tent to serve as a temporary shelter for 32 homeless female veterans and their children. The women's tent has grown to the extent that an extra tent had to be placed on the grounds to serve the overflow of children. Other organizations sponsoring tents included United Parcel Service, Sharp Medical Center, the National Shipbuilding Company and many others. Many services are provided to the homeless veterans during this event. The U.S. Naval Hospital in Balboa Park set up a “field hospital” that is capable of conducting surgery just as they would in any combat area. In addition to the temporary housing and medical services, veterans received such services as “grooming” sponsored by the Cosmetology Department of San Diego City College, legal services sponsored by the San Diego Superior Court System, etc. There was also entertainment provided by bands and children play facilities provided by a sponsor. This the third year Alpha has provided this facility along with volunteers to assist in the overall program. This year, the event served over 782 veterans. Many of the folks that received these services in the past, return as “alumni” of the program and willingly serve as volunteers. This program really works to provide a ‘leg up’ to the homeless veterans of San Diego. It is a fact that in the U.S., 30% of the homeless are veterans, and in San Diego this figure is 35%. Zeta Sigma Lambda take pride in being able to present this valuable service to the homeless veterans of the San Diego community and recommends other chapters become involved Alpha History AKA Scholarship Breakfast On the morning of June 19th, 2004, Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter, along with the Epxilon XI Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha held their annual Scholarship Breakfast at the Mission Valley Doubletree Hotel. The successful event was well attended by both Alpha brothers and AKA sisters, and guest speaker Superior Court Judge Randy Trapp spoke to the awardees about the virtues of scholarship to secure their futures. Many local high school students were presented with cash scholarships, including CAEP students Phillip Amerson, Yonas Kidune, and Ruben Braswell from Morse, Gregory Nelson and Marlon Haynes from Scripps Ranch, Tyrone Simmons from Mission Bay, and Deonte Sanders from Hoover. Upcoming Events Eugene Kinckle Jones – Servant of All Activity By all accounts, Eugene Kinckle Jones was a remarkable man. Tall, dashing, debonair, suave, worldly, handsome, sophisticated and articulate, his many accomplishments include Executive Secretary of the Urban League, lobbying President Harding to include African-Americans on the staff at Tuskegee Veterans Hospital, leading the effort to establish the Schomburg Research Library in Harlem, and counted Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes among two of his closets friends. It is ironic indeed that he was made a Jewel only two years before his death in 1954. Next ΖΣΛ Meetings ....................... Aug 27, 2004 • Sept 24, 2004 • Oct 22, 2004 ............... Tandy President’s Message To my brothers of “the Light,” it is with pleasure and humility that I assume the reigns, duties, and responsibilities of President of Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter. It is a real honor to serve you to the very best of my abilities. Although I have been a member of this august group of men for a relative short period in comparison to some of the other life members (like 654, 215, 1752, etc.), I have endeavored to demonstrate my commitment to the principles of our fraternity. What do I need from you, my brothers? Well, I will need help and commitment from each of you to adopt the principle of “one more step for Alpha.” You see, gentlemen, Alpha is truly worth it. We as a group collectively work hard and play hard. But all of this is within the confines of our commitment to the uplifting of mankind and particularly African American people. We, as a segment of society, are faced with many challenges in our community, and it will take our committment to Alpha to work on helping to “cure these ills.” Alpha can do this in collaboration and cooperation with other organizations, such as the Pan-Hellenic Council and other African American organizations, but, the issue is we must do something. Each of you are talented. We’d like to put these unique talents to use to help others. Here are a few areas that we need to focus on. • Improving the CAEP program and having a committed group to work with these young men to better themselves. Just following the examples of our stellar brothers is a place to start. Each of you is “stellar” in some way. • Plan to work diligently in the MLK Jr. Parade and Pageant. These events really showcase our chapter, and the parade is now the largest annual parade in the city. It takes work, and we need the help of each brother to memorialize our slain brother who was truely a dedicated community servant. • Participate in Project Alpha to combat the teenage pregnancy problem in our communities. • Participate in the March of Dimes Walk-AThon, which is a fundraiser to combat birth defects. My brothers, I ask you to challenge yourselves and lift the “torch” just a little bit higher, because the need is actually more than a “little” greater but “much” greater. I’d like to count on you in the brotherhood of Alpha. Fraternally yours, Bro. Donald Long Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter P.O. In attendance were brothers Kelvin Ellis, Reggie Marbray (and wife Antonette), Don Long, Larry Sadler and Sam Bagwell. The group did the five mile walk through Balboa Park, raising $1,700.00 for the March of Dimes, the most ever donated by our chapter. The brothers solicited donations to sponsor their walk through the park. The monies raised are used to fight birth defects in infants. The March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon is one of our Fraternity’s national programs.
