Drifting: COTA -- What Does it Stand For?

Y
ou may have
heard the
acronym
“COTA” bantered
about lately and
may have been
wondering, “what
does that mean?”
Technically, it stands for “Circuit
Of The Americas,” which is the new
Grand Prix race track that opened
last year in Austin. Your Maverick
Region, along with the Hill County
Region (based in Austin) and Lone
Star Region (based in Houston)
combined to rent this track for a
Porsche Club Race and Drivers’
Education event on May 10, 11
and 12. “COTA” now also stands
for “Carrera Of The Americas,”
which is the name the clubs have
given to this Porsche Club event.
Perhaps needless to say, this
event sold out within minutes of
registration opening, to people
who wanted to be among the first
to be on this new 3.4 mile track,
which hosted the United States
Grand Prix Formula One race last
November. As I write this, people
are streaming down to the track
for this first-of-its-kind event. Next
month, we’ll have an article and
photos of many of our Club Racers and DE-ers who attended.
And as a note to any of you aspirint graphic artists out there who
need an outlet for your talents,
we are looking for someone who
can take over creating the club
event ads that you see throughout

the car magazine that drew him into a
lifetime of loving cars. He spent many
afternoons riding his bike as a young
kid to the local newsstand to buy and
read everything he could. He now
owns a Midnight Blue 911S and enjoys
driving it in wonderful Texas!

ow -- late April/early
May was a busy time for
the Maverick Region!
So busy that I only have room for
half of my normal column. Hey,
what’s that cheering sound?
But the busy part of the season
isn’t over yet. Check out the ads in
this issue: There is a one-day Drivers’ Ed at Eagles
Canyon Raceway on June 1, followed by the Autos
in the Park Concours at the Cooper Aerobics Center on June 2, put on by our own Jack Griffin.
June 8 features a Summer Kick-Off Picnic, with an
optional Rally starting at The Ballpark in Arlington and ending up with the rest of the picnickers
in Cedar Hill State Park. Our fourth Autocross
of the year takes place on June 16 at Dallas Raceway in Crandall. And don’t forget our monthly
lunches and Happy Hour social festivities.

Maverick Minutes: May Board Meeting

M
eeting
began at
7:02pm.
President John
Hamilton started
us off by identifying the need to
implement an
annual policy to address how we
manage the MRPCA Board email
distribution list, recommending
that it include just current and
past year board members, chairs,
and co-chairs. John will communicate this to Bob Benson.
Also, he said that in Germany,
they are making a big deal of the
50th birthday of the Porsche 911.
As a result, we received some free
banners from them. He is giving them to Concours Co-Chair
Jack Griffin and Social Chair
Tracy Robertson to rotate use at
Concours and Social events.
Our Driver Education Chair, Lori
Mauthe, gave her report next,
which she began with a shout-out
to our Slipstream editor, Carey
Spreen, and his team; “We are
all just increasingly amazed.” She
then said that the second DE of
the season was a great success.
The good weather and excellent
instruction through the end of the
day contributed to having many
DE participants (19 in Green, 37
in Blue, 17 in White, and -- drum
roll -- 28 in Yellow), plus a record
for charitable contributions! For
instance, the parade laps raised
about $700 for the Komen Foundation for breast cancer cure. Many
thank yous from Big Brothers Big
Sisters. The dollars cleared will be
spent on purchase and implementation of already-approved technology to improve data capture and
more immediacy relative to driver
performance. Additionally, these

funds will enable us to advance
to in-car equipment for analysis.
John brought the in-car piece to
a vote for approval: Approved.
Porsche of Plano (formerly
Boardwalk, bought by AutoNation), recently experienced a
software change, which should
not affect our fall sponsorships.
This needs to stay on our radar.
The Green Group for the next DE
is sold out. We need instructors!
The June 1 event is one day only.
Susan Froehlich suggested tracking Sunday Drive participants that
took parade laps at MotorSport
Ranch to help with converting
them to possible DE-ers. Lori took
note, and mentioned that her
husband helped work the Sunday
Drive. Thank you, Peter Mauthe!
Vice President Gareth Maurice announced that he has
processed all of the insurance
for our upcoming events.
Carey Spreen reported that he
is in need of a graphic artist for
club ads, due to internal responsibility shifts. John said he will
mention this in his article. We are
staying on delivery schedule!
Social Chair Tracy Robertson
began her report with ensuring that
all available board members are
registered for the Cinco de Mayo
at (Ed) Mayo’s event in Euless. She
said that 84 members have already
RSVPed, and she expects at least 25
cars to be there for the Concours.
She mentioned that she is in need
of some help with tear down, and
having the coolers brought back
to storage. Award certificates are
done. Our next social event is the
Summer Picnic and Rally, Saturday,
June 8. The optional Rally to the
Picnic starts at the Ballpark in
Arlington and ends at the picnic
May 1, 2013
location, Cedar Hill State Park.
Cars ‘n’ Cattle is in the chute for
Saturday, October 5 at a member’s
property in Princeton (including
a dead bug count contest!). The
Founders’ Day celebration was proposed and confirmed for November 2, and discussion began about
combining this event with our
Holiday celebration and a charity
fundraising. Suggestions were made
to have a separate, more casual
holiday gathering at someone’s
home, but at this point there are no
plans for a separate Holiday Party
this year, as it is getting difficult to
find a suitable venue. John asked
Tracy to pull together a proposal
with all the elements which need
to be considered for us to review
at the next board meeting.
Concours Co-Chairs Frank Briggs
and Jack Griffin are working on the
annual Autos in the Park gathering,
which will be held June 2 at the
Cooper Clinic in Dallas, and is a
“People’s Choice” event. Porsche
of Plano has been asked to sponsor
and supply gifts. Linda Bambina
and Renee Farinella will be there
to help out with promotion to new
members, and covering the event
for a possible Slipstream article.
Jim Falgout, our PCA Treasurer,
distributed his P & L information for January through April.
We have about $33,000 in the
bank for operating costs, from
which we have already made our
deposits to DE and the Carrera of
the Americas Club Race and DE.
Gareth chimed in, looking at ways
to improve the Goodies Store.
This will be discussed further with
Pat Friend, though currently a
third party is managing the site.
Don Sebert joined the board
meeting tonight and is helping
with Rallies. Thank you, Don!
Sunday Drive crew Brendan
Eagan and John Harvey said that
there are already about 30 people
registered for the May 5 Sunday
Drive to Rancho Sereno. They
expect about 50 cars on this final
drive for the spring season. Great
tours are planned for the Autumn.
This is traditionally an excellent
intro to involvement in the club,
as it provides a great opportunity
to get to know folks, and discover
with what areas of the club they
may be interested in participating.
Membership Co-Chairs Susan
and Tom Froehlich were excited
to report that we are at the highest Membership number in our
Region’s history: 2253! They are
tackling the need to address the
non-renewal issue, suggesting a
recruiting contest; more details to
follow. A $50 per quarter incentive
was approved, and John said he
would develop a letter to go along
with the calls that need to made.
Lisa Steele, visiting former Maverick Membership chair, now National Membership Chair, mentioned
that survey feedback in the past has
indicated that sometimes, people
are not feeling welcomed. We’re
on it; stay tuned for Ambassadors!
Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit
has been working on the Carrera
of the Americas (COTA) Club Race
and Drivers’ Ed event, fielding
questions, gathering volunteers,
and working with Linda Bambina to do a special vintage show.

contributions in to Carey for
Slipstream as far before the 10th of
the month as possible. Advertiser

for the Autocross. A big thank you
to Deane Yamada for upgrading
the timing system, enabling direct
delivery to the website using Visual
Basic scripting. Dallas Raceway is
the next event, June 16. That venue
may be closing, though, because
they are in bankruptcy. If Dallas
Raceway closes, Travis will move
those events to Mineral Wells. And
finally, a big thank you to Richard
Diller, who drives up from Killeen,
and uses his own sweeper to clean
the Mineral Wells site. He says he
does it to honor Travis’ commitment to our Autocross series.
After June 16, there are no more
Autocross events until September,

Destination Restoration: Rickety, Tickety, Smoke, and Boom!

N
ot only
is this a
catchy
title, it is also what
my 944 has been
experiencing
for the last few
months thanks to
that long winter. Thankfully, not
all of these symptoms were present at the same time, and to be
honest, over half the time (once
moving down the road) the car
ran very smoothly. I can definitely
tell she is getting older, though.
This particular Guards Red 944
turned 26 this year, and in April
celebrated its second anniversary with me behind the wheel!
As many readers can attest, I have
constantly had to keep up with
the car, and have been forced to
replace all sorts of key components. In time I have also flared
up some customization of my own
by repairing fiberglass and repainting/designing the interior.
But lately I have been tinkering
under the hood trying to counter
the continuous flow of part malfunctions she has been throwing at
me. The first issue I experienced
while it was still freezing up outside.
I found a small fuel leak on the
fuel rail where gas is fed into the
injectors. The simple solution of
replacing an injector o-ring fixed
the issue in a flash. Next in line

came the days where the car
just would not start. I’d like
to blame it on the fluctuating
weather but, the truth is, I
drive my Porsche and after a
few hard corners my camshaft
position sensor unclips. It never fully unplugs, but it backs
out of the mount up at the top
back part of the engine bay.
When it finally started to get
warmer outside, the “ricketing” snuck in with the sunshine. It seems like every 944 I have
encountered has a minor ticking
sound coming from the cylinders;
heck most cars out there have a
ticking. But on top of the standard
white noise of the engine I got
an extra sound: this “Rattlesnake
Mating Call” occurred sporadically,
and increased in intensity and
velocity as the engine accelerated,
but then would abruptly stop. I
spent a great deal of time searching for the exact source, but could
only find the sound coming from
the top of the cylinder heads.
Eventually I decided to switch out
the spark plugs and sure enough
the sound ceased. Turns out the
number four cylinder’s spark plug
was improperly gapped, and had
signs of corroding carbon all over
it which was causing the misfire.
Studying further on the condition
of the spark plugs I also noticed
that the quality of fuel I was getting
from the pump (which
will remain nameless for
the protection of the
gas station and its family), wasn’t sitting well
with my engine. I always
treat my car to a tank of
Premium 93 octane, but
have decided to “shop
around,” for the most
compatible tank of gas.

The last issue I want to mention
is a real doozy, and nearly caused
a complete mechanical overhaul.
Since late February, I have had a
small puff of smoke come bellowing out of my gear shift boot area.
After I took off the boot and drove
around I would get a big plume
once the car had warmed up. At
first it didn’t happen all the time,
usually surfacing only after the car
had been running for 15 minutes
or so, and after the initial plume
it no longer smoked. The smoke
is just a standard grey color, and
I can only describe the smell as
the smell you get from blowing
out a non-scented candle. I have
checked every inch of the car and
found no leaks of any kind yet.
From what I can see and feel, my
clutch isn’t acting up, and everything in the engine bay seems to
be tightly bolted on. I don’t know
if it is a coolant/heater core issue
or if I just ran over and splashed
a chemical on my exhaust system
that burns away when hot, or
what? Well I guess all I can do is
keep on keeping on. The answer
will eventually present itself.

our grid master, was busy as were our fabulous
instructor teams. Grid sure was a busy place.
Except, that is, for the time that someone threw up
a lot of gravel in a turn – we had all of the Red group
in the hot pit lane until the MotorSport Ranch crew
quickly swept the corner. Then Joel Nannis (Registrar
and Black Flag Steward) released them for more fun.

Between run sessions, our students were either in
class or visiting with other Porsche owners, sharing stories and bench racing while watching.
Over lunch time we had visitors both days. On Saturday we hosted 11 matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Dallas. Peter Mauthe was their host, and after a
drivers’ meeting and visit to the Park Place team, they
waited in the grandstand for their turn at Parade Laps.

May Sunday Drive: Tour to Rancho Sereno

sunny Sunday morning through
rolling hills and serpentine roads
surrounded by islands of canopied
trees. There were incredible views
along the way, and if you ever have the opportunity to make this drive, I highly recommend it.

A brief coffee stop at an Exxon station provided
a chance to mingle and share stories -- and if you
ask a car owner about his or her car, you’re sure
to get an earful. The break gave us an opportunity to admire several of the vintage autos and
confirm that there was still plenty of tread left
on the tires, so we continued on our journey.

Roughly 60 owners and enthusiasts in 34 colorful
Porsches gathered at Saxbys Coffee in Allen for the
105-mile voyage to Rancho Sereno, a delightful bed
and breakfast located on a private ranch and wildlife
preserve in the beautiful Red River Valley of North
Texas. The first leg of our trip took us through
rural farming communities and alongside lovely

It was a great day with great people. Still, there’s
a chance that the tour left a lasting impression on those that happened to see it passing

Cliff ’s Ramblings: Computers and Club Races

rushed to the hospital. As of Monday
night (May 13) he was well and resting
-- EKG and other tests were good. And
since he has more important things
to worry about, we are reprinting an
article of his from June 2010 about
-- what else -- Club Racing! Keep Cliff
in your thoughts as you read it . . .
I
wanted to just sit tonight and
write about something fun.
Instead I ended up battling
with weird computer glitches. I
open Word and immediately I’m
asked for a product key. Huh? So
after some digging I find the key.
Enter it and no go. Times like this
make me crazy. Now I’m using
Notepad and hoping Richard can
make it work. Had to figure our
wordwrap etc. just to get going.
It made me wish that I could
design a car for whomever is responsible for the weird computer
glitches that the average citizen
has no idea how to deal with.
The car would intermittently not
unlock in any way once in a while.
It would start but not respond to
any driver input at times, unless
shut off and restarted. It would
require fingerprints to start it
and not recognize them once
in a while, and require different
fingers be used at least every 90
days. Plus, multiple fingers would
have to be used and none reused
until 10 changes had been made.
I would then require that person
to have to come see me and pay a
minimum of $1,000 to replace all
the system operating hardware,
and I’d replace it with something
that would require them to spend
untold hours learning how to
use it. It would appear to be an
improvement, and their vehicle
would need this at least every three
years. OK I’m over it. Arrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

inspection for many events in a
row and just love the experience.
It is fun to be an observer.
Plus it is at Eagles Canyon. David
and Linda Cook are the track
owners and just a delight to be
around. We are so lucky to have
them here. If ya ever get the chance
to have a libation with them and
discuss all things automotive,
you will be highly entertained,
as they are an amazing couple.
I already envision how things
will unfold for the race. Friday in
tech we will weigh a huge number
of cars, and the PCA Scrutineer
will be there to check logbooks as
well as help new (first-time racers)
get their logbooks in order. This
will go into the evening till maybe
7:00pm. First-time race cars will
be looked over very carefully. Are
the belts properly wrapped and
pinned? Is the battery tied down
correctly? Is the cage correct and
safe, as well as legal? Does the shutoff system work correctly? Many,
many things to consider. For me I
want the driver to be safe. I leave
it to the scrutineer to decide if it
is correct for the class entered in.
It is so fun to just meet the drivers,
to see their cool cars, and to just
send them on their way ready for
friendly (most of the time) combat.
Workers for grid, hotpits, and flag
stations will meet each morning
around 7:00am, then be on station
around 7:50am, and checking in
on radios to Control just before
8:00am. “Cars on course” at 8:00
sharp. Much of this will be orchestrated by volunteers from our club.
I marvel at their ability to tie everything together. Multiple people
always stand out in my “Club Race
World.” I’ll name some here quickly
and know I’m leaving many out
(please forgive me). Bob Benson;
always seems to be in hot pits and
on top of everything. His wealth of
experience is amazing in this realm.
Jan Mayo will be working grid. She
seems to dance among the cars lining them up with perfect precision
and that always-present smile. Lisa
Steele will appear to be in about
20 places at one time. If you need
something she can make it happen.
Christy Payne can find anyone you
need to talk to and always knows
who is assigned to what task.
Well guys, it is the women that
make this gig go. I know; I sit and
marvel at their prowess at this event
every year. How funny is that?

Evidently there
is. The weather
did not cooperate
with us this evening for our usual
patio party, but we did manage to
get an indoor location out of the
frigid April temperatures. How
does it go in Texas -- wait 5 minutes
and the weather will change?
We had a total of 17 attendees for
our monthly get-together, and we
were especially pleased to see that
two of the couples attending had
never been to a PCA Happy Hour.
A side note: Apparently, we need
some feedback on where to hold
the Happy Hours in the future. I

know that we have tried to move
the Happy Hour between Dallas
and Fort Worth, or at least to the
areas located near Fort Worth. We
have heard complaints in the past
that there were not enough Fort
Worth locations, yet two recent
events there showed rather low
turnouts.

Time Trial 1 and Autocross 2 and 3: April Competitive Events

finally made it
to a Maverick
event and got to
drive a Porsche.
Tannia Dobbins
first introduced me to the idea
of racing cars just for fun. Before
talking with her, I had never given
the concept much thought -- and
certainly never assumed it was open
to regular gals like myself. As she
talked about this passion of hers, I
got excited about bringing my little
Honda S2000 out and taking it for a
spin. But alas, just a few weeks after
she invited me to my first event, I
ended up moving to California.
Fast forward a few years and I’ve
moved back to Austin. When I
catch up with Tannia, the conversation invariably turns to cars and
she re-extends her old invitation to
bring me along to a racing event.
So when I got the Facebook message asking if I’d be interested in
a girls’ weekend in Mineral Wells,
there was only one possible answer:

How liberating and informative to learn about
those limits and how to correct the situation!
The next day was the autocross. After the speed (and
the spinning) of the previous day, I almost didn’t
want to participate. There would be more people.
It’s a much more precise event (twisting and turning through boxes and slaloms). And even with the
Boxster’s killer racing brakes, I just didn’t see how
I’d be able to drive through the course at anything
faster than a crawl. The cones were placed so close
together, I’d probably take out whole rows of them!
This time, my ride-along with Tannia intimidated
rather than excited me. I just couldn’t see how I’d be
able to speed up and slow down as quickly as she did.
But everything changed after my first lap. It was fun!
Really really fun! The mid-engine on the Boxster made
it a blast to take around the really tight turns. All those
cones meant that I didn’t have to shift much at all
(second gear
was great for
most of the
course) - and
not shifting
meant not
missing gears
on an unfamiliar clutch.
Of course,

wouldn’t be
complete
unless I

run, the car started to slide as I braked going into a slalom (another note -- don’t brake and turn at the same
time). The borrowed helmet slipped down over my
eyes and I missed a few cones as I tried to recover the
car and my line of sight simultaneously. The laughter
coming from the general direction of the passenger
seat let me know that everything would be just fine.
So Tannia, PCA, and Maverick Region -- thanks for a
great weekend. I had a blast and can’t wait to come
back with my own little car -- and a helmet that fits!
