February - April 2016 FESTIVE CELEBRATIONS Since our last newsletter so much has happened at Abingdon Court. Elvis, local tribute artist Graham Stanmore, delighted all those who attended the Christmas Lights Show with a performance of hits as well as beautiful classic Christmas songs that made the start of the festive season very special. The Brownies visited in December and the residents really enjoyed listening to them all sing. Tiny Toes Nursery also visited and gave out presents to the residents. Many relatives visited on Christmas Day and stayed to enjoy a special lunch with their loved ones. It was a great family atmosphere. Friend of Abingdon Court, Maria Parsons, Chief Executive of The Creative Dementia Arts Network was our guest of honour and switched on the lights. Our pantomime, Beauty and the Beast was amazing and we enjoyed laughing along with the performers while we enjoyed a glass of Baileys. OUTINGS FORTHCOMING EVENTS The animal education & therapy group, Wild Science, brought to the Home a DEMENTIA AWARENESS EVENING range of animals and reptiles, including a skinny pig, for the residents to handle 16 TH MARCH 6PM and pet. The residents had a real hands on We are hosting another Dementia experience. Awareness evening as last year’s event was so well received and attended. It is a great opportunity to introduce people to our fantastic home and also help people in the community by providing advice about caring for those with dementia. DEMENTIA ARTS NETWORK Cumnor Village Hall was the setting for a vintage tea party that many of the residents and staff enjoyed on a day trip. A lovely time was had by all dancing and taking high tea. The cakes were delicious and everyone sang along to classic and favourite songs. We are looking forward to working with the Dementia Arts Network. Our wonderful home has been selected to have an artist in residence. Anne, who works with textiles will work with us for several months. We are all looking forward to welcoming Anne and learning new skills and having fun at the same time. We are now halfway through our music course with Ben Healy from Abingdon Music Centre. It is a course specially designed for people with dementia and is called Black Spot. We are learning about rhythms and keeping time to the music and also having a great sing along. NEWS IN BRIEF When the weather warms up a day trip is planned to Milestones Living History Museum in Basingstoke. It’s a great place with some wonderful things to see and do. There is a vintage sweet shop and an old fashioned pub where everyone can enjoy a tipple. We would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who really do make a difference to the well being of our residents. We look forward to welcoming those from Radley College, Our Lady’s and St Helen’s and St Catherine’s volunteering in the new year.
