CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
The assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism.
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the
thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Most merciful God,
We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved
you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son,
Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your
will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ.
By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen
you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day.
Let us pray.
A brief silence is kept before the prayer.
Almighty and ever-living God, throughout time you free the oppressed, heal the sick, and make whole all that
you have made. Look with compassion on the world wounded by sin, and by your power restore us to
wholeness of life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
The assembly is seated.
Word
FIRST READING: Jeremiah 22:13-16
A reading from Jeremiah.
13
Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness,
and his upper rooms by injustice;
who makes his neighbors work for nothing,
and does not give them their wages;
14
who says, “I will build myself a spacious house
with large upper rooms,”
and who cuts out windows for it,
paneling it with cedar, and painting it with vermilion.
15
Are you a king
because you compete in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink
and do justice and righteousness?
Then it was well with him.
[6]
16
He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
then it was well.
Is not this to know me?
says the LORD.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALMODY Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness
[7]
ELW 843
SECOND READING: Galatians 6:7-10
A reading from Galatians.
7
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8If you sow to your own flesh,
you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the
Spirit. 9So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give
up. 10So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those
of the family of faith.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL PROCESSIONAL
Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation (stanza 1)
ELW 645
The assembly stands and sings stanza 1 to greet the gospel, turning to face the processional cross.
[8]
GOSPEL: Mark 2:1-12
The gospel is announced.
The holy gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
When [Jesus] returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2So many
gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking
the word to them. 3Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.
4
And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and
after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. 5When Jesus saw their faith,
he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6Now some of the scribes were sitting there,
questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive
sins but God alone?” 8At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among
themselves; and he said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to
say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk’ 10But so
that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — he said to the paralytic
— 11 “I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” 12And he stood up, and immediately
took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We
have never seen anything like this!”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
GOSPEL RECESSIONAL
Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation (stanza 4)
ELW 645
The assembly sings stanza 4 of “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation” (previous page).
At the conclusion of the procession, the assembly is seated.
SERMON
Silence for reflection may follow the sermon.
The assembly then stands to proclaim the word of God in song.
[9]
HYMN OF THE DAY He Comes to Us as One Unknown
NICENE CREED
The presiding minister introduces the creed.
With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
[10]
ELW 737
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
An assisting minister invites the assembly into prayer.
With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, the world, and all of God’s creation.
For the church throughout the world, that, filled with your love, it may hunger for truth, thirst after
righteousness, and bear witness to the good news: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For all members of the church, that they may serve you in true and godly lives: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For all pastors, deaconesses, diaconal ministers, and associates in ministry; for Elizabeth and James, our
bishops; that, together with all those responsible for the care and nurture of your people, they may support
one another in serving Christ: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For the nations of the world and their leaders, that they may work for justice and promote the dignity and
freedom of every person: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For the whole creation, that everything you have made may fulfill your purpose and that we may exercise care
for your diverse gifts: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For our neighborhoods, that we may know them and work to extend your mercy to our neighbors through
ministries of love and care: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, the lonely, the forgotten, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and
all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
Other intercessions may be included.
[11]
For the glorious company of all the saints, those who have died in faith and those who live in certain hope,
we praise you. That their witness may give us courage until the day of Jesus Christ: God of mercy,
hear our prayer.
The presiding minister concludes the prayers with these or similar words.
Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus
Christ, our Savior.
Amen.
PEACE
The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ.
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.
The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace and may say, Peace be with you or similar words.
All return to their places. The assembly is seated, and the service continues with the offering.
Meal
OFFERING
An offering is gathered. During this time the table is set.
MUSICAL OFFERING “He Comes to Us as One Unknown” — Robert Hobby
OFFERING HYMN
Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow
ELW 885
As the gifts are brought forward, the assembly stands to sing.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow:
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
OFFERING PRAYER
After the table is set, the assisting minister leads a prayer.
Let us pray.
God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good
things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord.
Amen.
[12]
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give thanks.
The presiding minister continues with the preface:
[13]
The presiding minister continues:
You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory.
You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish
but have eternal life.
We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things
for our salvation.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new
covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance
of me.
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
[14]
Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection
and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we
ought but as we are able; we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word
and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who
share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the
forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints.
To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever.
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
