WENTZINGERHAUS
21
(Museum of municipal history)
Located in the late baroque residence of the artist and benefactor
Johann Christian Wentzinger, the
museum shows treasures from
more than 900 years of the city‘s
history. Good preparation for a
sightseeing tour is provided by
models, which depict Freiburg with
its medieval walls and gates in
around 1600 and in the baroque
star fort in around 1700.

uniqueness of natural and cultural
environments. The museum is an
entertaining and informative place
for the whole family.
Current information can be found
on the internet.

Freiburg’s Uniseum, run by the
University of Freiburg, functions
both as a museum and a forum.
It offers insights into the diverse
aspects of daily life, research work
and teaching at the university from
the 15th century to the present

Freiburg
-
Our circular trail around all the important sights begins at Rathausplatz (town hall square): 10 Altes Rathaus (Old town hall), once the
residence of the town clerk and now the site of the Tourist Information
office, is particularly impressive with its red façade. Right next door is 10
Neues Rathaus (New town hall), which was a collegiate building of
the University of Freiburg until the end of the 19th century. An institute of
anatomy and polyclinic were once located where the Freiburg municipal
leaders now meet. Opposite the old town hall is 24 Martinskirche (St.
Martin’s church), which was built in 1300 and was the monastic church
of the adjacent Franciscan monastery until 1783. Berthold Schwarz, the
most well-known of the former friars, is found on the fountain monument
in the centre of the Rathausplatz. According to legend, as an alchemist,
he invented gunpowder by chance. Colourful mosaics of the coat of arms
of Freiburg and those of Freiburg’s partner cities shine at his feet. Many
such pieces of art made of colourful rhinestones decorate the alleyways
of Freiburg’s old town, while adorning the entrances to countless shops.
On the left past St. Martin’s Church, we come to Franziskanerstraße and,
after some time, pass 6 Haus zum Walfisch (The whale house) with
its magnificent, late Gothic portal bays. Built by the Grand Treasurer of
Maximilian I, the famous humanist Erasmus von Rotterdam lived here
from 1529–1531; he had been banished from Basel by the Reformation
in 1529. Further along, we reach
Basler Hof (Regional council),
one of the most important secular buildings of the city, which has always
Proceeding past Basler Hof on the right, we see the heart of Freiburg –
Münsterplatz. Freiburg’s Münstermarkt (farmer’s market) is open here from
Monday to Saturday – an experience and indulgence in one: try a “Lange
Rote” sausage, a glass of Baden wine or simply stroll through the hustle
and bustle! In the middle of the square, the 25 Münster (Cathedral) rises
imposingly, the 116-metre-high tower of which was once termed the “most
beautiful tower of Christianity“. Built between 1200 and 1513, it is one of
the few large Gothic church buildings, which was completed in the Middle
Ages and yet survived virtually unscathed through many wars – most recently
the bombing of Freiburg in the Second World War. Among other things, the
magnificent tympanum in the vestibule, the historic glass windows in the nave
and the main altar of Hans Baldung Grien are worth mentioning. Our tip: on
the South side, you can climb the cathedral’s tower to be rewarded with an
exquisite view.
The red façade of the 7 Historisches Kaufhaus (Historical merchants‘
hall) is most noticeable here on the South side of the cathedral. Adorned with
Habsburg sculptures and coats of arms, it was built from 1520–1532 for the
market administration of the city and served as a customs, trade and finance
house. In direct proximity to the Historical merchants’ hall, you will find the
4 Erzbischöfliches Palais (Archiepiscopal palace) of 1756, the former
house of the estates of the Breisgau knighthood. 21 Wentzingerhaus
further east of the square was built in 1761 as the “Residence on the Beautiful Corner” by painter, architect and sculptor Johann Christian Wentzinger
and now houses the museum of municipal history. The “House of Baden
Wines” is also an absolute must for all wine connoisseurs and lovers: The
1 Alte Wache with its yellow façade invites you to taste numerous wines
from Freiburg and the region.
We proceed further past the old cathedral’s masons’ guild, into Herrenstraße, in which one of the outstanding buildings of Late Historicism in Baden
can be found in the form of the 3 Erzbischöfliches Ordinariat (Archbishop’s ordinariate). Through the narrow Münzgasse, we come to one of
the most beautiful streets of Freiburg, Konviktstraße. With its curved course,
it was a lively street of craftsmen in the Middle Ages and invites you to
while away some time here now with its attractive house façades and small
boutiques. A little further along we come to 11 Schwabentor (Swabian
gate): built in the mid-13th century, it is the younger of the two remaining
city gates, whose façade tells the legends of a Swabian, which once fruitlessly wanted to buy the city. A few steps from here you will find Germany’s
oldest inn 14 „Zum Roten Bären“.
Here in Freiburg’s upper old town, the picturesque Schneckenvorstadt
suburb with its industrial canal, Gerberau, Fischerau and Insel districts can
be found, which we follow up to Augustinerplatz with the former monastery
of the Augustinian Eremites. Built in 1300 and converted into the Baroque
style at the start of the 18th century, it has been undergoing renovations for
a number of years now and houses Freiburg’s most beautiful museum,
16 Augustinermuseum. The upper old town was once the artisan
district of Freiburg in the Middle Ages. Today, you can enjoy the Mediterranean charm of Freiburg here. After a short walk through the picturesque
alleyways, we reach the oldest preserved defence and watchtower of
the city, 8 Martinstor (Martin‘s gate). It also served intermittently as a
prison and was raised and extended at the beginning of the 20th century.
Past 38 Bertoldsbrunnen, the hub of local public transport, we pass
in Bertoldstraße the 34 Alte Universität (Old university) with the
20 Uniseum (University‘s museum) as well as the 36 Universitätskirche (University church) and reach the University District with the
collegiate building I, an art nouveau building from 1909/11 and the
old university library. A real “eye-catcher” is the new 35 Universitätsbibliothek (university library) with its glass façade, which comes from
Basel architect Heinrich Degelo. Past the historic 31 Theater Freiburg
(1905–10) we go via Rotteckring to the Schwarzes Kloster (Black Abbey),
named after the black habit of the Ursuline and one of the first girls’
schools in Freiburg. The Colombipark opposite invites you to stay a while
in the summer, as well as being home to the 15 Colombischlössle: the
villa built for Countess de Zea Bermudez Y Colombi in 1859-61 in the style of the English Gothic Revival now houses the Archaeological museum.
In Turmstraße, past the 17 Fasnetmuseum (Carnival museum), we can
take a look at the oldest council building of the city. Documented from
1303 as a council chamber building, the building has been identified as
the 5 Gerichtslaube (Old court house) since 1547 and is located in
the inner courtyard behind the old town hall, the starting point of our tour.

been the headquarters of important institutions since its construction in
1494-96: initially, it was used as the exile residence of the Basel Cathedral
Chapter; it was the official residence of the Anterior Austrian government for
almost a hundred years and is now the headquarters of the regional council
of Freiburg. Located here in Kaiser-Joseph-Straße – known as the “Große
Gass“ in the Middle Ages – was the city’s market at that time. Today, “Kajo”,
as it is known for short, is considered Freiburg’s boulevard and shopping mile
with its post-war arcade passageways.

Freiburg Tip
Lange Rote sausage
The smallest Freiburg emblem can be found right next
to the largest: the Münsterwurst (sausage) – also known
as the “Lange Rote“ – can be found in front of the
cathedral at the farmer‘s market between Monday and
Saturday. An absolute must for any visit to Freiburg!
Freiburg canals
The “Bächle” or canals run through the old town
and it is impossible to imagine Freiburg without
them. They used to serve as canals for firefighting
water, among other things. Today, the ”Bächle“ are a
refreshing cool-off for young and old in the summer –
but be careful: according to the legend, anyone who
takes a dip will marry a Freiburg citizen!
