Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report
It was a case of good news and bad news. The good news
was that our Tri-Club Racine on the Riviera was an
outstanding success. There were hundreds in attendance, the
band was great, we had plenty of food and there was no
shortage of fun had by all. The bad news was I missed the
party on the way back from South Shore’s Queen’s Cup. I
had good company in the person of ‘Wild Bill’ Erdmann who
sailed a great race with me in the double fleet. Sure, it was a
cold, wet, and bumpy ride, but we were hoping that the
people were safe on shore enjoying the evening. Turns out
that they were. As for the slow spring start, most of those on
the Queen’s got all caught up on our sailing with the ~210NM
round trip.
I always thought the Racine Yacht Club was a cool place to
be. That tradition will continue as we have just replaced the
AC and makeup heating unit on the roof. The old system was
getting tired and we had no other anticipated cash
requirements for capital projects this year. It was time and I’m
glad it’s in…one less thing to worry about. More news inside
the house would include a permanently mounted projector
and screen at the north end of the dining room. We should
have this rolled out some time for the upcoming roundrobins, Louis Vuitton Cup, and the whole AC thing on the big
screen.
I would like to offer a public thank you to Lynn Landwehr
who so kindly donated a new swing set for the beach. It was
a wonderful legacy and generous replacement as her father,
Dr. Craig Davis, had purchased the last swing set twentysome-odd years ago. A big thank you to Lynn and Jack.
This naturally leads to the whole kids topic. Notably, we
have a Kid’s Night, which I have come to understand,
happens on the third Friday of the month (unless it doesn’t,
then it’s the forth Friday). We have a couple dads getting this
thing together, notably Buck Mercer, Aaron Lund, and Brett
Gruchow. They have activities for the kids on Friday night
out on the lawn so (as an experienced parent) the participants
wolf down some chicken fingers and then proceed to get
grass stains on their clothing. I have been witness to several

of these events and it seems like it’s working. The overriding
vision is that we want young people to see the Club as a fun
place to visit, not just a place where they have to sit at a
dining room table yearning for freedom. That thing is
working.
Big news this in July is the HOOK race. Our boat count
currently sits at 46 compared to last year’s 56 but we have
another week and a half at the time of this writing. There are
lots of theories why we’re down, and why the Queen’s was
down but it is not for lack of trying. Scott Lewis and
committee have done more promotion this year than in the
past so the question remains unanswered. We are in our last
year of the Death’s Door/Black Beard sponsorship so do
your part and drink their products. They’ve been a great
sponsor and that’s how they feed their families….Cheers!
The Friday night of the HOOK is always a blast and this year
the featured entertainment is the Pack Rats Band. They do all
the Rat Pack stuff so check it out daddio! I would write more
but I have to get the boat ready to go to the finish line in
Menominee.
Have a great summer!

RYC News in Brief
From the June Board meeting minutes:
Treasurer Frank Randall reported a
monthly net loss for May. The annual lease
payment was part of that month’s expense.
However, on a YTD basis, the Club finances
are good with a healthy sum in adjusted
income.
Water levels continue to rise approaching
last year’s levels at this time.
Commodore’s Report
No report.
Vice Commodore Gregg Henning reported
the Long Range Planning Committee did
not meet this month, but members continue
to gather costs for future sessions.
Office Manager Kim Shortess reported the
new directories were going to the printer
that day. She distributed the final Work or
Pay report for 2012 for review by Board
members. Shortess indicated the newly
implemented ACH payment program is
going well.
Rear Commodore John Stanley reported
the Youth Sailing Program has started.
Membership Secretary’s Report
Shortess presented the membership status
changes:
NEW MEMBERS: Tom and Stephanie Auer
STATUS CHANGES:
Active to Resigned: Vic and Linda Schubert;
Phillip and Kim Ambrose
Shortess reported accounts in arrears
have been cleared, only four accounts with
relatively small balances remain.
House Director Jim Rooney indicated he
has signed a contract for replacement of the
defective windows in the dining room. He
expects the work to be done within a week.
Rooney reported the HVAC system
required emergency repairs to the 21 year
old unit. He asked for estimates to refurbish
or replace the unit will come to $1875 for
refurbishment, or $14,960 for replacement.
After discussion, the Board approved up to
$20,000 for replacement. Discussion
included how to incorporate the HVAC
design into the future roof replacement
project so as not to incur additional expense
at that time.
Rooney reported work was done on the
bar sinks. Lines and coolers need work too.
His committee will be providing
complimentary snacks at the bar. He will be
seeking and reviewing proposals for
catering for contract renewal time in the fall.
Rooney fielded questions on the
caterer’s decision to cancel dinner on a
Wednesday race night as well as problems
with stocking the bar.
Pier Director Mark Lukow presented a
written report:
Two unassigned slips remain. All vital
projects and repairs complete. Let’s go
sailing!
Yard Director Jack Landwehr presented a
written report:
Sand was removed from lot and large pile
located by north fence was moved to a
beach staging area. Sand was then being
moved from the beach staging area to RYC
beach area. Thank you to Gary Feest for
bringing down the heavy equipment to
remove the large piles of sand. There is
always sand to remove from the lot for
members looking for work or pay hours.
A wind screen will be purchased and
installed by the 4th of July. The cost to
purchase the wind screen for the north fence
is approximately $1,200. Volunteeers will be
needed to attach the wind screen to the
north fence.
The new children’s swing set donated
by Lynn Landwehr is assembled and ready
for swingers. Thank you to Lynn Landwehr
for donating it and thanks to all who worked
on assembling the swing set. A reminder
that the set is designed for younger children.
Younger children should be supervised
when using the swing set or playing on the
RYC beach. Children use it at their own risk.
A procedure will be developed to
move the swing into the winter storage
area and to anchor the swing set for
summertime use.
A procedure to burn large bonfires on
the county land in the basin will be available
shortly. The procedure will have contact
numbers for City of Racine Fire Department
and Racine County Water Patrol. Place calls
to these two departments five minutes
before starting the fire to eliminate any
confusion as to what is burning near the
RYC shoreline.

Thanks to the Sea Scouts for cleaning the
beach last week. Cleaning the beach is a
contentious matter due to the debris that
flows to the beach from the Root River.
Please take time to watch the beach and pick
up litter and place drift wood on the basin
burn pile.
Thanks to Joe Fox for replacing the
burnt out lights on the poles in the parking
lot and replacing the wiring for the lights
illuminating the east lawn. RYC looks great
at night.
Sam Marsteller suggested that RYC
place a dock box on the beach to store toys
used for playing in the sand. The dock box
is on the beach is now ready for toys.
Thanks to Steve, Sue and Sam Marsteller for
getting the dock box ready for the beach.
The large cracks and pot holes in the
RYC parking lot will be repaired in the next
few weeks, most likely after the 4th of July.
RYC needs to consider a complete
resurfacing of the parking lot surface within
the next five years.
Dry Sail Storage contracts are available
on line or at RYC office. Make sure you

contact the Yard Director before storing your
boat so that the correct storage space can be
assigned. Boat storage assignments are
based on the previous year’s location and
then first new contract received.
The repair for the fence and gate for the
gray enclosure will be completed shortly.
Rooney commented on Landwehr’s
plan to draw water from the lake for yard
use. He suggested instead that the Club
install a split water meter so that water only
(not sewer) usage can be charged for yard
and pier use, separate from house use.
Henning indicated that Joe McGauran
has contacted the beach authorities to see if
a natural fence can be provided by planting
beach grass along the north fence line.
Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson
indicated all was ready for the Tri Club
Party with the exception of door prizes. He
presented the events for 4th of July
celebration weekend.
Race Director Bob Sample provided the
following report: I would like to report the
following activity and functional items
relating to the RYC Race Director and the
Race Committee:
1. Racing season has started with 31 boats
currently registered and a few to follow.

Halliday added a new gas filler, and is doing
additional improvements for the motor and
bilge setup. A boarding ladder is being set
up. The bow pulpit is being fixed. The inside
has been cleaned and organized..
Racer Chaser: Bill Halliday and John
Stanley have done some work on the boat.
Bill is going to add the new radio and

3. Race Committee continues to grow
with addition the spring of two additional
men and 3-4 new ladies. Pam is in charge of
scheduling crew dates and snack

Henning announced the new projector is in
house, but a screen is still needed. He plans
to have it installed within the next couple of
weeks.

HOLY COW!
To my Yachtee Friends...
Thanks for making the
“Racine on the Rivera IV”
A HUGE success. What a bash.
The sun came out. We had a blast on the river,
The food was great, sweet tune-age
with a band that played all the favorites...
We just might have to do this again.
