THOMAS THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT 100% Dear Parishioners, Our Lenten journey has three basic pillars, to pray: to fast (sacrifice) and to give. All are a biblical mandate and direction on how to live life as a follower of Jesus. Last weekend we listened to the Diocesan Development Fund Drive video. The basic message talked about prayer, sacrifice and giving. A couple weeks ago you all received the information and pledge cards in the mail. You are asked to respond to the call to support the parish and the local To Date: Diocese Goal = $101,600 diocese. Our parish goal is $101,600 dollars. After 110 Great Pledges Made = $ 30,680 start for Gifts Received = $12,777 years all of us need to support this effort for the next just 2 Donors = 76 generation of believers. We are using facilities that weeks! Percent of Goal = 13.4% others sacrificed to build and give as a gift to all of us. Now is our turn to continue the tradition. Secondly, part of our Lenten Prayer is a “COMMUNAL RECONCILIATION SERVICE ON SATURDAY, MARCH 9th at 10:30 a.m.” We have a time for prayer and 9 priests are going to help hear all of the confessions. Since way back in ancient times; prayer, sacrifice and giving have been part of our Lenten preparations for Easter. In addition to all of the personal prayer exercises, the Church also gives us the Sacrament of Reconciliation to help us not only prepare for Easter but as a way of knowing the power of forgiveness in our daily lives. It’s an invitation to come home to the Church Community and fully participate in the power of the Risen Lord in our lives world. The peace of Easter is one of the gifts that this sacrament can give us. 90% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% and I hope the Little Black Books for daily Lent reflections are helping you in your journey during this time of year. In a couple of weeks we will share with you the Little White Books that help us continue through the Easter Season to Pentecost. All of this is done to help you grow in your faith. Peace, Fr. Joe Pastor P.S. The community of Taize in France and the worldwide prayer that flows from it focuses on unity and reconciliation among Christians around the world. As we gather in prayer at St. Thomas on the first Tuesday of each month, we are often joined by Christians of other denominations praying for the unity in the Body of Christ that will truly be a sign of His presence in the world. As our economy struggles, more families are in need of some of the basic necessities. Our food drive supports families in need through the food pantry at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We help homeless through our bag lunch program. We help seniors by supporting Riverside Meals on Wheels. We help mothers with newborn children through the Riverside Life Center. We can do a lot when EVERYONE does a little bit. Next weekend, March 910, we are asking EVERYONE in the parish to join the children and bring one food item to Mass. Today we are providing suggestions of the type of items needed. Pick up a slip of paper today as you leave Mass and return with the indicated item next week. Working together we can help people in need in our own neighborhood and become even more a truly Eucharistic community (a people giv- Teen Catechesis Update As we all began our Lenten Journey of 40 days of fasting and sacrifice, our Teens started with a Mardi Gras Celebrations Sunday, February 10th. They discussed traditions, played games, and ate lots of food. The students voted for and crowned a King and Queen of Mardi Gras 2013. (King Emanuel Macias and Queen Alexia Kobus.) Every year the LA Archdiocese holds a Religious Education Conference in Anaheim CA, starting with Youth Day for teens with the theme “Keep Calm God’s Got This”. On Thursday, February 21st, 36 Confirmation students from St. Thomas attended Youth Day and had a wonderful time experiencing the excitement of our faith among teens their age. We started with an opening rally with Jesse Manibusan. Our first workshop was with Pam Stenzel; “The high cost of free love.” Second workshop, was with Fr. Tony Ricard; “Firm in Faith-I say Yes, My Lord”. We finished with a closing Liturgy by Archbishop Jose Gomez. St. Thomas was proudly represented at Youth Day this year as Christian Astran volunteered as an MC for ValLimar Jansen: “Click your heels and say, There’s no place like Mass”. He did a wonderful job introducing her and all her accomplishments. Great Job Christian! The Future Needs Committee Use your time and talent for treasure! The Future Needs and Endowment Committee needs volunteers for the upcoming NASCAR Races March 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Volunteers will get to enjoy the races, have lunch, snacks, unlimited water, and you get to meet new friends! Pick up the volunteer information forms in the back if the church, near the song books.
