ST.VINNY’S VIBE The 8th Grade Voice of St. Vincent de Paul Parish School Volume 1 Issue 5 January 24, 2014 A Glimpse Inside the 1st Grade The first grade teacher is Mrs. Beth Brown. She has worked at SVS for five years and has taught TK (transitional kindergarten), 3rd grade, Creative Writing, and 1st grade. She says that she enjoys teaching, and the students are like sponges, they absorb everything. Her favorite part of teaching is when students finally get it. We asked a boy and girl from her class each a question and the first one was, "Do you like Mrs. Brown?" Angelina and Ivan both said “YESS!” Then we asked, "What's your favorite subject?" Devyn said, "Art class" and Luke said, "Science". The last question was what is your favorite part about being in 1st grade? Brooke answered," Learning about science.", and Braden said, "Doing Math or being Student of the day." Student of the day is picked every day to go up to the board and fill in the weather or day of the week. Well, it seems like the first graders are having a great time with Mrs. Brown! Edited by Rachel Drnach and Ava Peroni In this issue: * First Grade * Basketball * Mrs. Gazzola * CSW * Birthday * Geography Bee By: Sarah Booth and Brooke Dierkes Boys Basketball By: Patrick Brown The 5/6th and 7/8th grade teams are off to a very successful seasons. The 7/8th grade team, coach by Ed Beltz, is 7-0 and the 5/6th, coached by Adam Shinsky, is 9-1. They have been working very hard since the first practice, and so far they are having an excellent season, which proves how hard they are working. We hope that our teams will continue to win, and we wish them success over the course of the season. Keep it up guys! "A star student should be a role model for other students. It is not all about academics; it is about behavior, attitude, and respect." Mr. Vincenzo Catholic Schools Week By: Julie Padden, Isabel Weeks, Chris Furka, and Zach Taylor Catholic Schools Week is when we celebrate our faith and take a break from school. During this week the teachers cannot assign homework or tests, and we have a lot of fun activities to occupy our time. Here are some of the activities to look forward to: Mrs. Gazzola For this issue of St. Vinny's Vibe, we interviewed Mrs. Gazzola. She is the four-year-old preschool teacher. Our first question was "How long have you been teaching?" She told us that she has been teaching preschool for 27 years. Then we were curious to see whether she enjoyed those 27 years. She said "I love it!" She also told us that she prefers smaller classes because there's more one-on-one time, but she likes bigger classes, too. We then asked how the first half of the year went for her and her class. Her response was "It was challenging, yet rewarding." The preschoolers are starting their alphabet unit and each week they will learn two letters of the alphabet. Hopefully the second half of the year will be just as rewarding as the first! Geography Bee By: Marissa Garlitz Last Friday St. Vincent's held a Geography Bee with 15 participating students. Each class took a 50 question test and the top three from each grade were able to compete in the school bee. In the actual match, if you missed two questions you were out. As the competition progressed more children were getting out, until the final two were left. The remaining two students in the competition were Kyle Brown and Davis Warmuth. They competed for what seemed like forever. Tons of questions were asked until finally Davis Warmuth won. He will proceed to the next level in the Geography Bee; hopefully he wins there as well.
