2009 Annual Report
2009 Annual Report P.O. Box 196217 · Winter Springs, FL 32719 407-365-4194 · www.ifopa.org Facts-in-Brief of FOP What is Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP)? FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine; it causes bone to form in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Bridges of extra bone develop across joints, progressively restricting movement and forming a second skeleton that imprisons the body in bone. There are no other known examples in medicine of one normal organ system turning into another. How would understanding the cause of bone formation in FOP help others? The information obtained from studying this disease will have far reaching implications for the treatment of common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, hip replacement surgery, and other forms of heterotopic ossification that occur in trauma and burn victims. An example of the typical progression of FOP: Photos of an individual through his lifetime. Spontaneous flare-ups of the disease arise in defined temporal and spatial patterns, resulting in ribbons and sheets of bone that fuse the joints of the axial and appendicular skeleton, entombing a patient in a skeleton of heterotopic bone. Characteristic toe abnormality: 95% of those afflicted by FOP have an abnormally formed great toe which is visible at birth. Demographics of FOP • • • • • Genetic disease Affects 1 in 2,000,000 people No ethnic, racial, or religious patterns 700 confirmed cases worldwide 285 confirmed cases in the US Clinical Characteristics of FOP • • • • • Finding a Cure & Treatment for FOP • The only laboratory in the US dedicated to FOP research is at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where the discovery of the FOP gene was made in 2006 • Funds spent on FOP research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine are approximately $1.5 million per year (IFOPA funds approximately $500,000 of this ). These funds support three principal investigators with 15 postdoctoral fellows, students, scientists, and staff Characteristic malformations of the great toe Flare-ups occur spontaneously or following bodily trauma such as: childhood immunizations, falls while playing, and viral illnesses Misdiagnosed in a majority of cases as cancer Surgery makes the condition worse No effective treatments or cure Images courtesy of Mutter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Frederick S. Mission To eliminate FOP as a health concern through education, advocacy, research and support. Background Founded in 1988 by Jeannie Peeper, a woman with FOP, the IFOPA was originally established as a pen-pal group because Jeannie wanted to bring people with FOP together. Today, the organization has grown to include members across the globe. The IFOPA supports FOP research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine at a rate of approximately $500,000 annually and provides life-saving support to those who suffer from FOP. Community The IFOPA provides several quality programs and services to its worldwide membership including educational webinars, a guidebook on FOP for families, a mentoring system, scholarships for independence assistance, an interactive communication system for members, and regional family and member gatherings. In 2009 alone, the IFOPA was able to grant $12,285.61 in LIFE Award scholarships to FOP members thanks to the generous support received from family fundraising events, corporate sponsorships and individual donors worldwide. “I cannot explain how Amanda [fellow FOP mother and mentor] lifted me and carried me in the time following [diagnosis]. I saved her e-mails and revisited them many times whenever I faltered and could not cope.” – Carrie Connell, FOP mother 4 Dr. Burt Nussbaum, Ariana Romero, and Dr. Fred Kaplan Dear Friends, The IFOPA takes great pride in our financial efficiency, our accountability to donors, and our transparency. We work to use every dollar contributed as efficiently as possible. Historically, 80-90% of your contributions have gone towards funding medical research and member programs. Over the years our research dollars have supported the effort that resulted in the FOP gene discovery. Our program dollars have funded four (4) International Symposia as well as family gatherings and informational meetings, approximately $35,000 in LIFE Award scholarships, the FOP Connection and Milestones publications, and much more. In 2010, we will continue to support research -- more important now than ever as the FOP Lab starts to narrow in on potential treatment protocols. We are also developing new and better programs to support our members, with special attention to ensure access to those programs by those outside the United States. These global programs include translation for key documents, a redefined traveling resource center, a Mentoring program, continued E-Learning events and more. Our pledge to our donors is to continue to keep our overhead at or below the industry average, to maximize the percentage of your contributions that go towards research and our programs, and to spend our dollars wisely so we can support those with FOP while at the same time helping the lab get closer to a treatment and cure. We invite you to be a part of this herculean effort. Sara Olsen Chairman of the Board Dear Friends, 2009 marked the end of a decade that accomplished so much in the area of FOP research. The gene discovery was a monumental accomplishment in 2006 and I know the next decade will prove to be even more groundbreaking as we search for a treatment and cure for FOP. While those with FOP are spread throughout the world, I am amazed at how much of a small, close knit community we have at the IFOPA. That togetherness will be what drives our mission as we move forward. Everyone, working together, for a cure! With an eye on the future, the IFOPA, through a committed board of directors and staff, plans to continue to: • • • • Provide support and services to those with FOP and their families, Provide the necessary funding to move research forward, Advocate for increased funding for rare bone diseases, Provide timely up-to-date medical information for those with FOP, their families, communities and the medical community The IFOPA’s ultimate goal is to find and fund a treatment and a cure while still continuing to be the leading source of information and support for those with FOP. All that we achieved would not be possible without you; I thank you for your valuable support and activities that make us who we are. Karen Revels Executive Director 5 Letter from the President Dear Friends, In 2009, the International FOP Association has continued to forge ahead with the determination of an army. Although we may be few in numbers, FOP research will impact many other bone related conditions effecting millions. Our focus is to find a treatment and a cure for FOP, and since the discovery of the FOP gene in 2006 we are moving upward and onward. The IFOPA’s number one program is supporting the research on FOP at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, led by Dr. Frederick Kaplan and Dr. Eileen Shore. Our funding began in 1990 and continues today providing more than five million dollars to FOP research. Please read the Nineteenth Annual Report by Drs. Kaplan, Shore and Pignolo on our website which provides remarkable insight on the accomplishments in research this year. The IFOPA has an extraordinary team of board of directors, staff and volunteers that strive to improve the lives of people around the world, working hard to create programs that are very important to our members with FOP, which help them in their daily living. One such program is the International President’s Council which consists of international members from twelve different countries that work together as representatives to communicate with our members of different languages more efficiently and assist them in fundraising, FOP awareness and connecting families together. Since its inception twenty one years ago, the IFOPA has ended the isolation for persons with FOP and their families. I am proud to be a part of this amazing group, all of whom I consider just like family. Our commitment and fortitude radiates at our grass roots family fundraisers, in showing support for our fellow members and bringing awareness to FOP via the IFOPA website, printed materials and national television coverage. We may have geographic boundaries, but we are connected….same mission, same hope, same dream. Your continued support is extraordinary and the IFOPA is so grateful to have you on our team. Thank you so much for your generosity in supporting our goals and ultimate mission to find a treatment and a cure for FOP. We could not do this without you! With Sincere Appreciation, Jeannie Peeper Founder & President 6 Where It All Began Biography of Jeannie Peeper, President and Founder of the IFOPA Jeannie Peeper was born August 30, 1958 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, one of five children. At birth, her parents realized her toes were deformed. During infancy lumps began to form on the back of her head and she couldn’t open her mouth as wide as her siblings could. This began her journey for answers to her unusual condition. For four years, she suffered with these mysterious anomalies. Then she was finally diagnosed with what is now known as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). Jeannie’s childhood was most notably “normal” and she set her sights on making life the best it could be. She graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1985 with a B.A. in Social Work. As an adult, her incredible journey to find answers and end the isolation that she felt with FOP, began when she met Dr. Michael Zasloff at the National Institutes of Health and learned that he had other patients with FOP. This connecting of people with FOP, all sharing a common goal, sparked the need to incorporate a non-profit organization to raise funds for research. On June 8, 1988, the International FOP Association was born, and she has been honored to serve as President of this organization since its inception. Jeannie began working in 1989 with Dr. Frederick Kaplan who was established as the IFOPA medical advisor. In 1992, he and Dr. Eileen Shore established the FOP Research Program at the University of Pennsylvania; which they both chair. Today, the Program is the preeminent center for FOP research in the world. Jeannie has had 22 years of having the privilege of being President of the IFOPA. Along the way there have been many people that have joined in the mission and vision of the organization and she has enjoyed the work, seeing the community grow worldwide and given birth to many new ideas and changes throughout this time. The IFOPA is currently an organization that has grown to include members across the globe, fund FOP research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine at a rate of approximately $500,000 annually and be a life-support to those who suffer from FOP across the globe. The needs of the FOP community has led the IFOPA to launch many projects under Jeannie’s leadership. Some of those achievements have been hosting four international symposiums for families and medical researchers, establishing a web site, participating in many media projects, hosting organizational/strategic planning meetings for the IFOPA, supporting many family gatherings, finding leadership for numerous projects, speaking to donors both close and in faraway lands. In addition, Jeannie has participated in the announcement of the FOP gene discovery, supported international FOP organizations and families in their meetings, and has been honored to speak to many families in private counsel. Today, Jeannie remains active as a spokesperson for the IFOPA and FOP, and continues to stay connected to the organization as its Founder and to the work being done that will someday help to realize the dream of a treatment and a cure. Post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Jan-Jan Liu, at work in the laboratory. ”I am so glad that Jeannie Peeper started an international association for FOP so that we are able to find information and that all FOP patients in the world can be connected. This is so important for research and trials in the future because FOP is extremely rare.” – Irene Snyder, FOP mother 7 2009 in Review IFOPA Website Gets a New Look The fundamental direction for re-designing the IFOPA website was to provide information about FOP to members, donors and visitors in a more user-friendly manner. In addition to providing information, the redesign also offers several features that increase interaction between the IFOPA and the FOP community, as well as within the community itself. As the 700 known diagnosed members worldwide are geographically wide-spread, interaction is essential in maintaining the close relationships that develop between members with FOP and their families. Jeannie Peeper Retires from IFOPA Board Jeannie Peeper retired from the board of directors after her many years of service. She continues to serve as President and spokesperson for the organization. Launch of New Member Service Programs Traveling Resource Center (TRC): The IFOPA designed the Traveling Resource Center, or TRC, to provide the global FOP community with a traveling showcase of tools and gadgets available for use with everyday tasks; thus, a valuable resource at meetings both in the United States and the international FOP community. The TRC includes demonstrations and examples of tools, gadgets and ideas that specifically deal with minimizing the challenges presented by FOP in everyday living. Upon request, the IFOPA funded a Traveling Resource Center representative to attend a meeting where he or she demonstrated each of the tools, give a brief presentation on the importance of everyday independence and discussed the variations that can be developed to meet the individual needs of FOP members. In 2009, the TRC was displayed at meetings in Italy, Canada and the United States. Teen and Young Adult Member Meeting: Thanks to generous contributions from donors, the IFOPA was able to host the first-ever IFOPA Teen & Young Adult Meeting in August in the heart of beautiful San Diego, California! FOP members ages 13-29 were given the opportunity to meet for a clinical checkup with Dr. Kaplan, a dental consultation with Dr. Nussbaum, attend group workshops to discuss personal experiences and advice, listen to a Research Update presented by Dr. Kaplan, visit the San Diego Zoo as a group, and spend quality time with fellow peers who truly understand each other in a way others cannot. Mentoring: The IFOPA has developed a Mentoring Program designed to provide a family-to-family connection between members of the FOP community, in addition to staff support. The diagnosis of FOP, along with the challenges it introduces, is often frightening, overwhelming and nothing to be faced alone. Mentors of the Mentoring Program are those individuals with an FOP diagnosis, or a parent, sibling or caregiver of an individual with FOP, who volunteer their time as a means to help guide others through the obstacles of FOP. They listen and share their experiences, provide open communication for families and are knowledgeable of IFOPA programs and services that may be favorable to the mentee. E-Learning Events: With the help of many devoted members of the FOP community who have volunteered their time and expertise, E-Learning Events have proven a great success. The E-Learning event program is designed to provide information to members through interactive videos and web-enhanced communication methods. Web-enhanced teleconferences, known as “webinars”, enable members to interact virtually with each other as well as the meeting’s host during a session. Communication is open and accessible to all attendees, an invaluable quality to members seeking immediate answers and responses. The information presented by experienced members and the question and answer sessions that follow are instrumental to the knowledge and well-being of fellow FOP members and families. 8 Dr. Frederick Kaplan Elected to Institute of Medicine On October 12, 2009, Frederick S. Kaplan, M.D., was elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The IOM was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to honor professional achievement in the health sciences and to serve as a national resource for independent analysis and recommendations on issues related to medicine, biomedical sciences and health. Currently, the IOM has 1,778 elected members. The IFOPA would like to congratulate Dr. Kaplan on this esteemed accomplishment. Frederick S. Kaplan, MD is The Isaac & Rose Nassau Professor of Orthopaedic Molecular Medicine and Chief of the Division of Molecular Orthopaedic Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Kaplan studies the molecular genetics of FOP and Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH), rare bone disorders in which the body forms a second skeleton of heterotopic bone. This collaborative work, conducted with his colleague Dr. Eileen Shore, led to the discovery Dr. Frederick S. Kaplan of the gene for POH in 2002 and for FOP in 2006. Dr. Kaplan co-directs the only center in the world devoted entirely to this work, has organized the medical and scientific communities worldwide on FOP and POH, and is recognized as the world’s leading expert on genetic disorders of heterotopic ossification and skeletal metamorphosis. In 1997, Kaplan was awarded the first endowed chair in the nation for orthopaedic molecular medicine. Cited in 2006, as one of the 15 people who make America great, Newsweek noted “the disease [FOP] was so rare, nobody wanted to deal with it until he came along.” Rare Disease Day 2009 on Capitol Hill Sara Olsen, Ashley, Carol & Fred Kurpiel, Hillary Weldon, and Karen Revels attended Rare Disease Day on Capitol Hill to raise awareness and advocate for those with rare and neglected diseases. The key messages presented to Congress were to encourage health care reform to address the issue of musculoskeletal disease by: 1. Supporting funding for research, prevention and rehabilitation 2. Improving access to health care for those suffering from musculoskeletal disease by eliminating preexisting condition exclusions and ensuring insurance coverage is continuous and portable. 3. Ensuring there is affordable, sustainable, and comprehensive care for all by ensuring insurance premiums and co-payments for medications and specialty care are affordable. New Ian Cali Clinical & Research Scholar In June 2009, Robert Pignolo, M.D., Ph.D., was named the Ian Cali Clinical and Research Scholar at the Center for Research in FOP and Related Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Penn). In this position, Dr. Pignolo will pursue projects in FOP research, participate in collaborative grant proposals, develop FOP clinical guidelines and guidelines for clinical trials and have defined clinical exposure to FOP members. “The mere existence of the IFOPA means that I don’t feel quite so alone with my freakishly rare disease, of which I have a variant. Through your organization, I’ve met the only other person in Oregon - where I now live - with the disease.....and she lives only about 20 minutes away!” – Adrienne Bailin, FOP member 9 Third Edition of Family Guidebook Published First published in 1995 in conjunction with the 2nd International Symposium on FOP, What is FOP? A Guidebook for Families, is a support manual for members with FOP and their families. Now in its third edition, edited by IFOPA member, Sharon Kantanie, and Drs. Kaplan, Shore and Delai, the Guidebook is a comprehensive look at FOP, answering many questions commonly asked of families and medical professionals. The Guidebook contains information by Dr. Frederick Kaplan and others regarding research and treatment options as well as articles by parents of afflicted children and adults with FOP, offering insight into the condition. The Guidebook is available in hard copy to Alexandra Rodriguez (center) and her IFOPA members as well as available online in PDF format on the IFOPA mother, of Chicago, IL meet with Dr. website. Fred Kaplan at the IFOPA Teen and Young Adult Meeting in San Diego, CA. Mystery Diagnosis Episode Features FOP Member On March 2, 2009, FOP member Ashley Kurpiel was featured on an episode of Discovery Health’s Mystery Diagnosis entitled “Girl Who Couldn’t Move”. The episode profiles Ashley’s life and focuses on her misdiagnosis, unnecessary surgeries and adaptations in daily living. Symptoms and early warning signs of FOP are discussed in detail by Dr. Frederick Kaplan, FOP Chief Medical Advisor, and the pediatric orthopedist who first diagnosed Ashley with FOP, Dr. E. William Schmitt. Ashley is currently 28 years old and leads a very active life despite the effects of FOP. L.I.F.E. Awards “Living Independently with Full Equality” The Quality of LIFE Award was developed to assist IFOPA members living with FOP to live more independently in their daily lives. LIFE Awards are available to IFOPA members who provide verifiable medical confirmation of the FOP diagnosis. The Award is a scholarship of up to $1,500.00 per member and is intended for use of items that improve the health, welfare & independence members with FOP of all ages. To date the IFOPA has provided 32 members with over $21,000.00 in LIFE Award scholarships. The items that have been given out this year have been an assistance service dog, laptop computer, printer, pool ramp, wheelchair, memory foam mattress, and college tuition. TODAY Show Spotlights FOP Member Three year old FOP member, Joshua Scoble, alongside parents David and Stacy, was featured on NBC’s TODAY Show on October 15, 2009. During the segment the family discusses the agony of misdiagnosis, the difficulties FOP causes with mundane tasks and how they are doing their part to promote awareness and raise funding through their annual Bingo For A Cure fundraising event. 10 NIAMS Researchers Identify Cell Involved in Pathology Researchers and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine including Frederick S. Kaplan, M.D., Eileen M. Shore, Ph.D., David L. Glaser, M.D. and Vitali Lounev, Ph.D., alongside researchers from the University of Connecticut, have identified a cell contributed to abnormal bone formation. The cell receives and erroneous signal to repair injured soft tissue by developing bone. This discovery offers a great deal of hope for future treatment options for people with FOP. Researchers Demonstrate FOP Mutation Reporting in the November, 2009 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, senior authors Eileen Shore, Ph.D., Professor of Genetics and Orthopedics, and Mary Mullins, Ph.D., Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, with scientists in Japan and Germany, demonstrated that the mutation that causes FOP mistakenly activates a cascade of biochemical events in soft tissues that kicks-off the process of bone development. The linchpin of the cellular signaling gone awry is a receptor for a bone morphogenetic protein, or BMP. We are pleased with the work that has been done, while recognizing there is more to do. Many goals and objectives were accomplished in 2009 in our four priority areas: Research, Programs, Capacity Building and Education. Below is a brief description of our priorities and the goals that were accomplished within each: Support Research Programs • Conducted a survey on Neurological Programs and FOP which will prove valuable in further research of FOP • Funded continued research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Enhance Support Programs for those with FOP • Hosted a regional meeting for teens and young adults with FOP to come together for support and education in San Diego, CA • Developed online learning events for groups of people to learn about a specific topic while providing an opportunity to ask questions • Created a “Traveling Resource Center” – a kit of independent living resources to send to International meetings Build capacity of the IFOPA to best meet its mission through governance, volunteerism, staff development, and fundraising • Revised and enhanced donor appreciation though personal letters and calls • Hired a new Executive Director to lead the organization into the future • Developed a strategic plan for the next 2-3 years • Focused on Board Development, strategically recruiting strong members Continue to be essential source of education about FOP • Continued individualized responses to FOP community needs • Created the second edition of the “What is FOP: A Guidebook for Families” • Created “Our Mission of Hope” awareness videos • Launched a new and improved IFOPA Website 12 Elliot, FOP member Stephanie Snow’s service companion “This community, this family, is part of my life.” – Theresa Caruso, FOP member Global Impact Total IFOPA Members with FOP by Country (as of 12/31/2009) Argentina - 11 Armenia - 1 Australia - 11 Bangladesh - 2 Belgium - 2 Bolivia - 1 Brazil - 57 Canada - 12 Chile - 7 China - 1 Colombia - 4 Croatia - 3 Cuba - 1 Denmark - 4 Egypt - 1 Estonia - 1 Finland - 2 France - 14 Germany - 26 Greece - 2 India - 6 Indonesia - 1 Iran - 1 Ireland - 1 Israel - 3 Italy - 9 Japan - 5 Kazakhstan - 1 Libya - 1 Macedonia - 1 Malaysia - 1 Mexico - 5 Moldova - 2 Morocco - 1 Netherlands - 6 New Zealand - 1 North Korea - 1 Northern Ireland - 1 Norway - 3 Panama - 2 Peru - 2 Poland - 6 Portugal - 1 Honduras - 1 Romania - 1 Russia - 2 Serbia - 2 South Africa - 1 South Korea - 1 Spain -7 Sweden - 12 Switzerland - 3 Turkey - 5 United Kingdom - 33 United States - 182 Uruguay - 2 Venezuela - 2 Linking the World At this time, the IFOPA has 672 members of the organization in 58 countries on six continents, 478 of these members have FOP. The majority are concentrated in North America, South America, and Europe, and then in Africa, Asia, and Australia. While the IFOPA arguably has a global reach, these numbers are by no means indicative of the likely number of those with FOP throughout the world. For example, China with an estimated population exceeding 1.34 billion people is likely to have close to 870 with FOP, using an occurrence of at least one FOP case per 1.5 million people. Yet the IFOPA has only a single member from China. Similarly, India with a population exceeding 1.16 billion should have close to 775 with FOP yet only six from India are members. Such low numbers of IFOPA members in these very populous countries combined with the singular prominence of the IFOPA in the “FOP world” and the FOP lab at the University of Pennsylvania, largely suggests that in these countries most cases of FOP are undiagnosed. Even in America where the number of IFOPA members approaches the number of expected cases, misdiagnoses are common and correct diagnoses commonly take several years. The extreme lack of awareness of FOP amongst the world’s medical community is one of the great future challenges for the IFOPA. Still, the IFOPA links members around the world by using a range of technologies including electronic mail, a central website at which a broad range of medical and family support may be accessed, an electronic newsletter, and an online bulletin board. In addition, in many countries, FOP volunteers have formed local FOP associations, established their own “country” websites, raised funds for FOP research, and generally created greater FOP awareness through their activities. In the section that follows, the activities of a group of particularly active volunteers are described. 13 Global Impact International President’s Council The International President’s Council (IPC) is essentially a communications network facilitating the exchange of information between the IFOPA and selected volunteers who agree to represent their country. There are currently 12 IPC representatives, two of which were added in 2009. IPC members and a brief summary of their 2009 activities follows: Argentina Our IPC representative in Argentina is Moira Liljesthrom. Moira is an architect and professor at the University of Buenos Aires where she works as a researcher in urban and regional planning. Her family consists of Manuel, 12, who has FOP, her husband, and a second son, age 15. In 2009, Moira completed a twoyear project focused on how people cope with rare diseases (including FOP) and their main problems. In addition to helping maintain Argentina’s Spanish language FOP website (which she and her husband established), Moira and her husband routinely make presentations about FOP to doctors, and write newspaper articles. She spent much time planning for a 2009 FOP meeting of families and doctors which was unfortunately rescheduled for 2010. A particularly special achievement for the “rare diseases community” was the approval by the Argentina Chamber of Representatives of a bill on rare diseases to which Moira made contributions. Moira also presented some of her research project results at a conference on “Rare Diseases and Public Policies” organized by the Health Commission and Fundacion FOP to promote the issue of rare diseases and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Australia Our IPC representative “down under” is Julie Collins. With a Master’s degree in Special Education, Julie works three days a week as a visiting teacher advising schools on how to support children dealing with physical impairment and by coincidence is also the advisory teacher for the school her son “Ollie” attends. While much of Julie’s time outside her profession is invested in assisting Ollie, who has FOP, her critical support enables Ollie to create FOP awareness by employing his exceptional public speaking talent and leadership skills. With Julie’s constant support, Ollie plays a highly visible public role in creating awareness of FOP. A typical example is Ollie’s presentation at a large fundraising lunch for TACQ (Teenage Adventure Camps -- Queensland, a charity that caters to teenagers with life-threatening illnesses) at which he spoke about his life with FOP. He also made a presentation about FOP to a large medical audience in Sydney at the Westmead Children’s Hospital as part of his role on the Youth Advisory Forum for the new Queensland Children’s Hospital. Last, in October 2009 Julie and her family organized an FOP fundraiser as part of her birthday celebration and raised several thousand dollars. Brazil Dr. Patricia Delai is the IPC representative for Brazil. While maintaining a 14 practice as a full-time dermatologist with 40 or more patients each day, Patricia also serves as physician for a number of patients with FOP. She is President of the Brazilian FOP Association and Latin American medical advisor on FOP. She regularly translates medical documents into Portuguese, a valuable service for both the local medical community and FOP families. Her efforts to spread information and knowledge about FOP were recognized by medical and other heath communities through invitations to present at several universities and heath care centers. As a result of these presentations, seven new FOP families were identified in 2009. Dr. Delai notes that “patients are being recognized very early and the new ones are children - a new reality, very different than what we found here in 2000.” Media events to increase FOP awareness included one TV interview, three radio interviews, and articles in two popular magazines. Fopbrasil has now almost 70 families who are provided free medical care by Dr. Delai and dental care by a dentist who takes care of special people. Canada Canada is ably represented on the International President’s Council by Carrie Connell. Carrie is mom to Brooke Connell, her delightful 10-year-old daughter who has FOP. Carrie is the education and program coordinator for a regional children’s rehabilitation Center in London, Canada. The year 2009 was one of great accomplishments on the Canadian scene. In May 2009, Carrie hosted the first Canadian national FOP conference which was attended by over 80 people including FOP families, physicians, scientists, and Drs. Kaplan, Shore, Nussbaum and Grunwald, all of the University of Pennsylvania. This event also saw the establishment of the Canadian FOP Network (CFOPN) for which Carrie was elected president and the development by Carrie of the new association website. Later in the year, Carrie and her board were successful in having the Canadian FOP Network registered as a charity by Revenue Canada. Last, a variety of fundraisers were organized that included an Air Jazz Employees Chili lunch fundraiser, Kids to Kids Giving Campaign, FOP Awareness bracelet sales/gingerbread house raffle at two local schools, scarf sales, and a very successful family letter writing campaign at Christmas. Through the wonderful efforts of FOP families and friends, CFOPN was able to donate $12,000 USD to the FOP lab at the University of Pennsylvania. France Beatrice Bertrand was newly recruited as an IPC representative for France in early 2010 and her activities will be reported in more detail in next year’s annual report. While dealing with FOP herself, throughout 2009 Beatrice provided an exceptionally valuable service by translating several of the IFOPA’s core documents into French, an activity very much appreciated by the large French FOP community worldwide. Germany From the beginning of the International President’s Council in 2007, Roger zum Felde has represented Germany on the IPC, and spreads awareness in an unusually effective manner through media events. In over 18 television appearances, Roger has used his charismatic personality to create considerable FOP awareness in the general public. He regularly speaks at fundraisers and clubs, and is a member of the Executive Board of FOP Germany. Italy Eleonora Borghesani is Italy’s representative on the International President’s Council. Eleonora is the niece of Enrico Cristoforetti, President of FOP Italia. Eleonora became a member of the IPC in late 2009 in the final year of her college education. Eleonora translates IPC e-mails and other FOP related documents into Italian for Enrico. A particularly noteworthy event for FOP Italia was the very successful FOP conference held in Cerigno Italy in March 2009, attended by Drs. Kaplan and Shore, several other prominent Italian physicians and scientists, and the majority of FOP patients in Italy. 15 The Netherlands Irene Snijder, whose 19 year old daughter has FOP, is the IPC representative for The Netherlands. Irene, as president of FOP Netherlands, plays a very active role by maintaining both e-mail and telephone contact with FOP families in Holland. She actively translates FOP materials into Dutch, including articles from scientific magazines. In June 2009, her association organized a day at the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, a first event for the Netherlands FOP Foundation, that brought together Dutch FOP families and friends, as well as several doctors and medical students. Also in June, Irene and her daughter visited the Maastricht Hospital at which they spoke to medical students about FOP. In November 2009, FOP Netherlands hosted a two day conference attended by FOP families, Dutch doctors, and FOP specialists from the Max Planck Molecular Genetics Institute and Drs. Kaplan and Shore from the University of Pennsylvania. On the day prior to the symposium, Drs. Kaplan and Shore presented a lecture on FOP research to the Dutch Society for Calcium and Bone Metabolism. Last, in 2009, FOP Netherlands became a member of a legal advice organization for disabled people known as the CG-Raad (Dutch Council of the Disabled and Chronically Ill). In 2009 the FOP Foundation had 56 members/contributors of which eight have FOP. That year the Foundation was registered by the Dutch government as a charitable organization acquiring tax exempt status. Poland Tomasz Przybysz became a member of the International President’s Council in 2010 and his activities will be reported in next year’s annual report. Tomasz maintains an active website that focuses on FOP for Poland. Serbia Jelena Milosevic, who has FOP, became a member of the International President’s Council in 2010. She reports that in 2009, she and others initiated and organized the first press conference in Serbia for Rare Diseases Day. Jelena was one of the speakers at the conference and spoke about the challenges of FOP. Her story also appeared on national television in the evening news. The following day she spoke at another seminar on rare diseases held at one of the largest hospitals for children in Belgrade. Such events are extremely effective in raising FOP awareness amongst the general public and in the medical community. 16 IFOPA Board member, Joseph Kitterman, M.D. Sweden Our IPC representative in Sweden is Marie Hallbert, President of the Scandinavian FOP Association, and mom to 11 year old Hugo who has FOP. Marie is known as a tireless high profile worker for the FOP cause. Her service ranges from highly personal work with FOP patients to public presentations, primarily to medical groups such as doctors and nurses. As a typical example of her involvements, in September 2009 Marie travelled to Orebro University Hospital to assist an FOP patient’s first meeting with her doctor, the physician having never had an FOP patient previously. In these situations, Marie always introduces doctors to the IFOPA’s “medical binder” in which FOP treatment guidelines and personal facts regarding the patient are provided. Perhaps suggesting Marie’s “fame” had preceded her, twenty other doctors were in attendance and Marie had the opportunity to educate the entire group regarding FOP symptoms, information sources, and the medical binder. An outcome of this event was that Dr. Bjorn Lindvall, a neurologist, agreed to assist Marie with finding physicians who will accept FOP patients. An additional outcome is that Marie is now booked every fall to lecture to several nursing classes in different places in Sweden regarding FOP. Marie also reports that in 2009, members of the Swedish FOP community became members of Rare Diseases Sweden. Soon after joining, Marie and Hugo were contacted by Stockholm -- Copenhagen Productions to make a concept piece for a TV documentary series about rare diseases. The trailer was shown to several television stations to gauge their interest in such a documentary series, the outcome of which has yet to be determined. Last, Marie reports that there have been several newspaper stories about FOP patients in Sweden during 2009. United Kingdom Julie Hopwood is our IPC representative for the United Kingdom. Julie is mom to Rachel, a young woman who has been very active in creating greater FOP awareness through both television and community events. In 2009, the year began with the annual Burns Supper organized by Richard Simcox in Aberdeen. The dinner is a highly successful fundraiser attended by several hundred people that raised over $27,000 for the IFOPA. In May 2009, Julie and Rachel met at Oxford University with Richard Simcox, Professor Jim Triffit and others including several FOP families to establish “fopaction”, an association to promote and organize the FOP cause in the UK. This in turn was followed in July by a meeting in Yorkshire at which David and Becky Naylor, web designers, set up the fopaction website which has reportedly been extremely effective and valuable in supporting association fundraisers. Julie and her family have been particularly creative in organizing fundraisers that have included psychic nights, social balls, raffles, auctions, dinner parties, suppers, fashion shows, and fundraisers at local schools. Their efforts have resulted in donations of tens of thousands of British pounds for FOP research. “The IFOPA has let our family know that we are not in this alone and that there is a whole community of support for us!” – Chrissy Flexer, FOP aunt 17 2009 Financials Audited Financial Statements Income Special Events $401,818 Donations $317,546 Dues, Investments, & Other Total $32,827 Source of Funds Special Events 54% $752,191 Dues, Investments, & Other 4% Expenses Medical Research $359,625 Public Awareness $128,120 Member Services $101,018 Management & General $106,859 $753,921 % Man a Gen gement eral 14% & g8 sin rai Total nd $58,299 Use of Funds Fu Fundraising Donations 42% Member Services 13% Medical Research 48% Public Awareness 17% 18 Greetings from The FOP Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.
