IONA NEWS Minister’s Musings Summer: a time of refreshment, relaxation and enjoying the wonders of God’s lush creation. Cottage time, travel time, back decks, front porches, ball fields and soccer fields will be our home-away-from-homes for the next couple of months. There are a couple of things we must remember as we get ready to embrace the summer months. We need to remember to pray. Pray for safe travels, for those who do not get vacations, for those who are coaching and playing, teaching and leading various activities throughout these days. Pray for your congregation at Iona as we gather for worship, offer Vacation Bible School to the community and continue to work with the daily tasks of mission and ministry to ourselves and our neighbours. We need to remember to worship. Maybe you’ll be travelling or away at the cottage or here at home – regardless, don’t forget the importance of gathering together as a community of God’s people, wherever you are. It might be a great opportunity to visit another church, another denomination and learn more about them. It might be a great opportunity to bring your visiting friends and relatives here to Iona. Worship is important as it is our source of strength and encouragement from God and to one another. We need to remember to rest. We are told to keep the Sabbath holy. Yet often we don’t allow ourselves true “Sabbath rest”. Summer Sabbath: a time to unplug, to rejoice in time with friends, family and neighbours – to renew our inner spirit and know the value of “down time”. Whether it be quiet time or family time or combinations of both – remember to rest from work, from those daily stresses that steal your laughter and playfulness. Recharge, renew, recreate (or re-creat) in body, mind and spirit. All these things weave together – they are not a “this or that” but they are a “this and that”. Prayer, worship, rest: let these be the blessings you realize and may these be the gifts you share this summer. Blessings Cynthia A note of thanks . . . and an invitation To: Dartmouth Churches From: The Christian Relief and Development Coalition in support of Margaret’s House Re: In appreciation for your support of Feeding Others of Dartmouth (F.O.O.D.) at Margaret’s House, the community kitchen located at 43 Wentworth Street, Dartmouth Date: September 2016 The Christian Relief and Development Coalition (commonly referred to as the Coalition) is a group of church representatives, who meet about eight times a year to keep informed about the needs of Margaret’s House. MUSE is a small group of Ukulele players who love to sing and have learned to play the Ukulele from an old man. MUSE stands for Mineville Ukulele Singing Ensemble. We are a new group; many of whom attend Iona Presbyterian Church in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Each of us love to sing and has learned to play the Uke. On two occasions we have accompanied the Reverend Doctor Cynthia Chenard to Oakwood Terrace and have provided the music for this Outreach Service. MUSE loves Gospel Music, we practise every Monday night in Mineville and enjoy the fellowship of four men and three ladies. For a group with little experience, we play and sing well according to our leader. We enjoy providing inspirational and old songs to those who need a lift and some enjoyment. MUSE Ron Tallon Page 3 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE Christian Ed has had a busy year and it is not quite over. Vacation Bible School will be held July 4th to 8th. The Program this year is ‘SURF SHACK’ and we look forward to lots of fun, food, science, games and crafts while learning the stories of the Old and New Testaments. Rally Sunday for our return to Sunday School classes is scheduled for September 11th. Make sure all you parents and little ones are ready for another great year of Sunday School. My sincere thanks to those who took the opportunity and time to answer the call for information. IONA NEWS - Summer Edition 2016 is almost ready. One thing remains. It requires distribution.
