The excitement this week in Lower and Upper Elementary centered
The excitement this week in Lower and Upper
Elementary centered on the Science Expo held
Thursday night. Our budding scientists revealed
their talents through some creative, insightful,
and superb projects. A significant number of
students and families turned out and enjoyed the
evening together star and planet gazing, learning
from a NASA engineer, checking out meteorites,
and a variety of other activities. Thanks to Mr.
Moore, our guests, teachers, and volunteers who
made the evening such a success. We are
already gathering some great new ideas for next
year’s event!
The winners of the upper elementary science fair
projects were Fourth Grade – Karlly Serafin (1st),
Xavier Keegan (2nd), and Olivia Arias (3rd); Fifth
Grade – Tatum Williams (1st), Klayton Williams
(2nd), Charity Vernon (3rd); and Sixth Grade –
Emily Hopkins (1st), Emileigh Engelbrecht (2nd),
and Christian Knight (3rd).
Also noteworthy in the area of science is the
collaboration with the Perot Museum of Science
to bring some hands-on programs to Canterbury.
Three programs are scheduled for the month of
February. We look forward to working with the
Perot Museum in this endeavor. In addition, the
Lower School is in the process of converting a
classroom into a designated Science Lab space.
It will be ready to show off soon!
The Youth and Government team which includes Canterbury
sixth through eighth graders continue to prepare and practice
for their upcoming state conference in Austin. Last week CES
hosted the team from Fellowship Christian Academy to
prepare together, helping one another hone their debating and
law-making skills.
This is admissions season! Canterbury had another successful
admissions open house last week. There is a lot of interest
from prospective families in enrolling for the 2014-15 school
year, with several letters of acceptance ready to mail at the
close of our current families’ reenrollment period, February
18th. Please return your reenrollment contracts by this
deadline. Your timeliness in this matter not only secures your
child’s enrollment but also helps Canterbury plan more
efficiently and effectively for next year in regards to programing and staffing.
Get involved! Plan now to attend Canterbury’s annual Gala on Saturday, March 1st! It is always a great event,
bringing the Canterbury family together. We hope our k-6 students will also attend the Children’s Gala. They will be
singing for the adults during a portion of the entertainment as well. If you have not yet done so, bring in your auction
donations! Your child will receive a “No Homework Pass”, and classes with 100% participation will receive an ice
cream party!

Brag Board!
Congratulations to Fifth Grader, Joshua Scott! Each year fifth graders in Mrs. Lage’s language art’s class put their
persuasive writing into action by writing grant letters on behalf of their favorite charity. The letters are sent off to an
executive director of a foundation in New York who reviews the letters and chooses a winner. Joshua’s letter was
selected resulting in a $100 donation for his charity of choice, AAFA, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America!
Congratulations to Canterbury senior, Clayton Foster! U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz announced 60 nominees to the U.S.
service academies. Nearly 1,000 candidates applied for a nomination from Sen. Cruz to attend the United States Air
Force Academy, United States Military Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy or United States Naval
Academy, and Canterbury Episcopal School senior Clayton Foster is a Class of 2018 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
candidate!
Lower School students Justin (K) and Alison Green
(3rd) returned from Christmas break beaming after a
once in a life time experience. They were invited and
attended the resident staff Christmas party at the White
House by their aunt, Kelly Green, the first female
African-American floral designer for the White House.
The pride they have for their aunt and the excitement
of meeting President Obama and the First Lady are
evident in the photo below!
Have a blessed weekend!
