January 30, 2014 - Canterbury Christian School
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Conservatory of Music, China Psalm 100:1 Canterbury Tales January 30, 2014 Training Students in the Knowledge of God and the Christian Way of Life “Thank You” to Amy Su Ho for taking time out of her busy schedule last Saturday to address the prospective parents who had assembled for this year’s Parent Information Session! What a well-crafted and beautifully delivered talk! Thanks to all who are helping to keep the Canterbury Family free of the H1N1 Swine Flu infection. This last week, the number of related fatalities in California has climbed to 95! Please remember to: (1) wash hands regularly with soap, (2) cover coughs and sneezes, and (3) stay home from school or work if sick! Thanks again! Kudos to the Canterbury Family for such remarkable attendance and punctuality standards maintained throughout the Second Quarter! 44% of the student body achieved Perfect Punctuality honors and 56% of the students obtained Perfect Attendance awards! 1 KUDOS to the Second Quarter recipients of the Golden Rule Award… Several individuals wondered if they might be able to receive more information on the two fantastic quotations offered by Mrs. Risk during last week’s OPEN HOUSE Chapel presentations. Here are the quotations to which she alluded… Nadia Boulanger 1887-1979 Juliette Nadia Boulanger was a French composer, conductor, pianist, organist, and teacher who taught many of the leading composers and musicians of the 20th century. She also performed as a pianist and organist. Her famous quotation states: A GREAT WORK IS MADE OUT OF A COMBINATION OF OBEDIENCE AND LIBERTY. Albert Einstein was once asked how he discovered the Theory Of Relativity. He said, “I didn’t discover it. I was listening to music and the whole thing dropped in.” 2 ` This past Christmas/New Year’s Break a ’92 Canterbury (CCS) graduate returned to visit his grade school. During the course of his visit it was learned that he works as a Research Scientist for a large coatings company in Pennsylvania (PhD in Chemical Engineering from UW). Last year, it was learned that another CCS graduate had just earned his PhD from Texas A&M in Chemical Engineering. Earlier this month, unsolicited word reached the office that two more Canterbury graduates are leading their respective math classes at Pinewood Upper Campus (Los Altos Hills). In addition, it is not uncommon for word to return to the CCS office that graduates score 98-99% on the entry math placement exams of Junior High Schools. And though we do not commonly advertise it, we are very grateful to the Almighty that Canterbury’s 4-year nationally-normed rolling math average as a school (ITBS) stands at 98%! But what accounts for it? Canterbury’s objective is not to follow the world by being more “advanced” or “sophisticated” or “novel.” On the contrary, Canterbury’s objective is to please God by constructing a massive, solid Christian foundation (as required by Scripture) in the lives of her students to the glory of God upon which they may competently build lives of selfless service to others. Anything worthy in life must of necessity be founded upon an appropriately-designed foundation that will not “give way” when it is most needed (St. Matthew 7:24-29). As the Prophet Isaiah stated so long ago: For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little… This massive foundation of knowledge must be constructed unhurriedly… sequentially… incrementally… and completely – without voids and bound together by the coherence of the Christian worldview. Few realize the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 (and claimed the lives of eleven individuals) was caused by an underwater “wellhead blowout” because of insufficiently cured concrete. Part II next week. α&ω 3 The tuition payment for February is due Monday, February 3. All payment due dates exercise a four-day grace period. Thank you for making your payments in a timely manner. We keep rainfall records at Canterbury; last year we received 6.38” of rain. The average rainfall in Los Altos is 16.25”. We are certainly grateful to God for the 1/8” of rain received last night. But we – like Elijah of old – should also pray for rain! Please be aware that all kitchen knives, scissors, and clippers were recently sharpened. Please take care to avoid injury. Thank you, The Office 4 HEARING TEST As was done last year, the Office has made arrangements for on-site hearing tests for all K-2nd grade Canterbury students. This testing is scheduled for March 6th. If you do not want your child to participate, please advise. If you would like your 3rd through 6th grade student to participate, please advise. Thank you, The Office. They’re noT dangerous if you raise Them righT… and neither are the dogs ;) Bibliophilia or Bibliophilism is the love of books. Accordingly a bibliophile is an individual who loves books. The adjective form of the term is bibliophilic. A bookworm (sometimes pejorative) is someone who loves books for their content, or who otherwise loves reading. A bibliophile may be, but is not necessarily, a book collector. Blessed is the child who can read… and appreciate… and benefit from… a love of books. St. Paul was a bibliophile and once wrote to young Timothy: The Bookworm, 1850 , by Carl Spitzweg The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments (II Timothy 4:13). 5 A Bit of Wisdom WORTH CONSIDERING… 6 CALENDAR____________________________ January 31 Lower Grade Speech Meet February 7 Chapel – Chimes & Handbells Upper Grade Speech Meet February 17-21 Washington’s Birthday Recess (No School) February 24 School Resumes February 28 Lower Grade Spelling Bee March 6 On-Site Hearing Testing (K-2nd) March 7 Upper Grade Spelling Bee March 27 Parent-Grandparent Day (8:45-10:45) 7 God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. From I John 1:5 8 With recent rains, and upcoming rains in the “ten day forecast,” remember to reduce speeds and leave extra distance between you and the car ahead. Drive defensively and leave extra time to reach your destination. And please do not rush when driving through the Canterbury parking lot. Thank you so much! Never play “not to lose.” Always play to win. But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:57 AMP 9 Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God. Benjamin Franklin (Poor Richard Sayings) Parents and family members are cordially invited to attend Daily Chapel services. Photos of scenes in Russia recently received from a Canterbury Family! These make us appreciate good old California! The name “California” is thought to come from a mythical Spanish island ruled by a queen named Califia that was featured in a Spanish romance ("Las Sergas de Esplandian") written in 1510. The Spanish explorers originally thought they had found the beautiful island, rich in gold and game, when they first set 10 foot on it. It is not quite such a cold place… Upward and Onward for the King! The Administration 11
