Bun-J Ride - ©Andy Parant PRESSKIT TIGNES WINTER 15/16 PRESSKITTIGNESWINTER15/16 EDITORIAL It’s all here ! Tignes is: contemporary, unconventional and unlike anywhere else with its cosmopolitan clientele, sports, skiing, riding, young people, partying and clubbing… In Tignes you can ski before and after everyone else: the ski runs on the Grande Motte glacier open on 3rd October 2015 and stay open until 8th May 2016. In Tignes we love live music and this winter, for the first time, the LIVE IN TIGNES BY LES FRANCOFOLIES will mark the opening of the summer music festivals. In Tignes you can get your fill of excitement with our unique activities like ice diving where you can explore what’s underneath the frozen lake or flying through the air with your skis on the Bun J Ride. People come to Tignes for the sports; Freeride and skiing are ingrained in its DNA: 90% of holidaymakers come here for the skiing. In Tignes you can let yourself go in the snowpark: big, wide, well prepared and shaped by lasers, Tignes sets the benchmark in the world of freestyle. In Tignes you can eat at 3,000m in the gourmet restaurant “Le Panoramic” with a chef in a down jacket and a gift/interiors shop for a spot of retail therapy at altitude. In Tignes you can try a whole host of indoor sports at Tignespace before recuperating in the Lagon aquacentre, nestled on the banks of the frozen lake. In Tignes you can imagine yourself in the Far West in the new 4* hotel “Le Taos” in Tignes le Lac. In Tignes 1800 you can enjoy family holidays with a proposed 240 extra beds this I AM LIVE IN TIGNES- 2015 - ©Andy Parant winter and a special beginner ski area for children. The Tignaddicts identified with a bold, quirky, sporty and anarchic image and it suits them down to the ground! WHO ARE THE TIGNADDICTS? - ©P.Lebeau IN TIGNES, DURING THE WINTER AND SUMMER 90% of holidaymakers take part in 1 sporting activity at least once during their stay, WHICH MAKES TIGNES THE SPORTIEST RESORT. IN TIGNES WE LOOK AFTER OUR OWNERS! Tignes can sleep 31,000 visitors. 50% of these beds are “supplementary beds” in holiday homes that have huge commercial potential. To encourage the use of these supplementary beds, in 1995 Tignes launched its extensive restoration of privately owned properties. The aim of the resort, a pioneer in this area, was to create attractive tourist accommodation in order to increase visitor numbers and benefit from the ensuing economic spin-offs. To achieve this, the resort put in place a commercial policy for the property owners, with the creation in 2004 of the Property Owners’ Partnership service, dedicated solely to the property owners within resort. It was a win-win collaboration between the resort and its property owners and was the first of its kind in the mountains! More than 20 years of qualitative and quantitative studies carried out by private organisations (“Comète” and “Contours”) mean that we know our clients really well. The characteristics of our clientele have barely changed in the last 20 years: Let’s not forget the ski industry is an extremely mature market: with 8% of French and 10% of Europeans going on ski holidays (figures unchanged for the last 20 years). There is a battle to attract more clients in an extremely competitive market where supply outweighs demand. In 30 years the volume of European skiers has stayed the same, 10% of the population, whilst the accommodation capacity in France (number of beds) has doubled. To stand out from the crowd, Tignes had to make itself different. Since 2004, being daring has become the trademark of our publicity. Looking back through the history of the resort, it is obvious that this has always been the case. It’s in the DNA. What we discover is that Tignes has always been different. In 1936 it was already provocative with a “pin-up” in a bathing costume promoting spring skiing in the leaflet from the tourist office! An unusual story continued with the construction of the dam and thanks to a handful of visionaries, the construction of the resort at an altitude of more than 2,000m. Then the organisation of the first World Freestyle Ski Championships in 1986 and the X Games from 2010 to 2013! •21% are between 18 and 24 years old. •31% are between 25 and 34 years old. •24% are between 35 and 44 years old. •24% are more than 45 years old. •60% of clients are male. •40% are women. •56% are foreign clients and 44% are French. Distribution of foreign clientele: •47% Great Britain. •15% Netherlands. •7% Belgium. 1936 brochure: a pin-up in a swimsuit to promote the benefits of altitude in Tignes © Archives Mairie de Tignes ©Andy Parant The advantages for the owners: increase in value of their property, help with the renovations by way of grants, advantages within resort depending on the number of weeks their property is occupied (free ski passes, parking spaces, swimming pool, spa and gym membership for example). TIGNES ACHIEVES GREEN GLOBE CERTIFICATION Tignes is the first ski resort in the world to have been awarded the Green Globe certification thanks to the STGM, its ski lift company. Green Globe is recognised around the world as an international label for sustainable tourism. Green Globe has drawn up 337 certification standards through environmental, cultural and social responsibility indicators that are based on the world’s most stringent principles. Tignes was awarded the Green Globe certification as a result of STGM’s commitment (Société des Téléphériques de Grande Motte), which operates the ski lifts in the Tignes ski area. The STGM chose to engage in this certification to guarantee its clients a skiing area that is in strict compliance with international requirements favouring sustainable tourism. — www.greenglobe.com The results for Tignes proved to be positive. Since winter 2004 and the creation of the Property Owners’ Partnership, more than 1,720 owners rented out their accommodation, 166 of which were new in 2014-2015 (+ 2.9% in 1 year), more than 2,650 apartments were given a classification and €900,000 of renovation grants were approved. Since 2005, half the increased visitors to Tignes are as a result of the Owners’ Partnership. In 2005: 22% of the supplementary beds in Tignes and other ski resorts were occupied. In 2014: 32% in Tignes and 20% in other resorts. ©Stef Candé 7 PRESSKITTIGNESWINTER15/16 LIVE IN TIGNES BY LES FRANCOFOLIES - FROM 11TH TO 14TH APRIL 2016 After 4 successful years, the Live in Tignes gets bigger and comes back from the 11th to the 14th of April 2016 as a Festival. This year, Tignes asked the team of the Francofolies de la Rochelle to work on the organization and the program of the Festival. A unique opportunity to launch the 2016 season of summer festival on the slopes of Tignes: 3 days of concerts, 15 artists and 2 stages. Come and enjoy this event with your skis on! HOTEL LE TAOS **** - © Studio Bergoend THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE MONTAGNETTES GROUP It’s interior décor is inspired by the West In December 2015, the 4* hotel “Le Taos” will open its doors in Tignes le Lac. It is the latest addition to the Montagnettes group and offers an escape to New Mexico in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with organic interiors inspired by Taos Village recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, with its unchanging traditions and Native American community. In a central, ski-tothe-door location, the hotel and apartment suites are spacious and comfortable with hotel services as well as swimming pool, Nohèm Spa, restaurants and bar. NEW LA CANTINE DE BOUVIER - NEW EUROPEAN FOOD CORNERS AT THE PANORAMIC Following on from the gourmet restaurant, the lounge area and the bar, the Savoyard self-service restaurant has just been refurbished. The Savoyard chef, Jean-Michel Bouvier has given the space a complete overhaul to improve flow and make it larger and more appealing. The traditional self-service restaurant has been replaced by food “corners”! This is a new concept bringing buffet food up-to-date with themed zones where several specialist chefs will offer: • A grill, directly inspired by contemporary steakhouses in London, with free-range chicken, hocks and other meats cooked to your liking and served simply in their juices; • Belgian fries: the fries are cooked twice over in beef fat in special friers from Belgium and served in cornets with a selection of sauces, Belgian of course! • Pizzas and focaccia breads prepared the Italian way by a special pizza chef; • Fresh homemade pasta dishes: the star of the show, located right in the middle of the restaurant. You choose the type of pasta you would like, it is cooked there and then before your very eyes, then served plain or with a sauce of your choice in special clay dishes; • To start and end your meal, two buffets are beautifully presented on Savoyard stones: a seasonal salad buffet and homemade dessert buffet. Winter exclusives THE WINTER CORPORATE GAMES - 28TH AND 29TH NOVEMBER 2015 Every year for more than 27 years, the Corporate Games has brought together private businesses, local authorities and institutions for 3 days of inter-company challenges. A DJ, some PopRock music and a giant firework at the heart of the mountains at 2 100m altitude, that’s the plan to celebrate 2016 in Tignes. RED BULL LINECATCHER - 17TH JANUARY 2016 An untracked slope scattered with couloirs and cliffs, natural kickers and the best freeskiers in the world, it is a difficult mix of Freeride and Freestyle. This is the concept behind Red Bull Linecatcher, which in four years has become one of the most important freesski competitions in the world. This year, Tignes will be welcoming the cream of the Backcountry specialists on a route embellished with kickers sculpted by Julien Regnier-Lafforgue and his team of shapers. TIGNES, A GAY-FRIENDLY RESORT - EUROPEAN SNOW PRIDE 12TH TO 18TH MARCH & GAY PRIDE ON THE 17TH MARCH 2016 By hosting the 1st GAY PRIDE during the European Snow Pride, Tignes is further emphasising its status as a gay-friendly resort. The choice of destination for LGBT holidaymakers is often down to the tolerance of the area. With its 1st GAY PRIDE, Tignes is confirming its tolerance, as it did in supporting marriage for all in 2013 and by signing the anti-homophobia charter. Tignes has become “THE” Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender resort in France. In Tignes, freeride skiing is synonymous with SAFETY. For seven years now, Tignes has decided to put safety at the very heart of its priorities. Its aim is to improve and increase the general public’s awareness of basic safety rules, which are part and parcel of any off-piste activity. Freeriding has always been an integral part of Tignes’ freeskiing & boardsports culture. With its proactive, fun, global and innovative approach within the resort, Tignes leads the way in terms of safety. AN AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER – THE FREERIDER’S BEST FRIEND From the budding freerider to the trained professional, before going off-piste, it is a prerequisite to visit the “DVA training zone”, located at the heart of Tignes on the banks of the lake. The DVA training zone is made up of 8 permanently buried beacons, which allow you to practise, to learn or to perfect the use of your avalanche transceiver in an autonomous way. Free entry / Two introductory sessions are held each week after skiing has finished. These are taught by members of Tignes’ ski patrol . ©Tristan Shu AN XXL HALFPIPE - Its king-size dimensions give riders maximum speed and amplitude. Athletes are judged on the execution and the difficulty of the tricks, on their landings and their overall use of the SuperPipe. The French shaper Benjamin Ravanel need 44,000m3 of snow to turn the Tignes’ Halfpipe into this 220-metre long, 19-metre wide and 7-metre high XXL SuperPipe. Play at being a pro rider on the SuperPipe in Tignes, open to the public all winter (except during contests). SFR FREESTYLE TOUR HALFPIPE SKIING WORLD CUP FINALS 6TH TO 10TH MARCH 2016 World Cup Stage in the legendary Tignes SuperPipe. The SFR Freestyle Tour, currently the largest freestyle ski competition in Europe, is offering four major events in the international calendar in the two new Olympic disciplines: halfpipe and slopestyle. But since last year, they’re going even bigger: the SFR Freestyle Tour Stage in Tignes is on the World Cup calendar! Since its inception, the circuit has stayed true to the spirit in which it began: an ”open” competition in which pros and amateurs can sign up to the 3 categories: Men, Women and Juniors. MORE INFO Six information totems, dedicated to freeriders, are positioned at strategic points at the heart of the skiable area, close to members of the ski patrol. Their aim is to inform and raise awareness, including information on the day’s weather, changes in the snow cover, reminders on safety rules etc. You also have the “DVA check point” - a beacon that enables you to check that your avalanche transceiver is working properly. NATURIDES: SKIING IN SAFETY - 10 “Naturides” are available in Tignes’ ski area. What’s the idea behind these? They are marked black slopes that have been secured against avalanches, but not groomed. In this way, the natural snow conditions are preserved, according to changes in the weather. This is a way of testing your skills and fitness before dropping into the Big White! TIGNES: THE RIDE IN THE DNA! FREESTYLE GENERATION, FOCUS ON - With baggy clothes, flashy colours, helmets jammed on heads, twin-tipped skis, back protectors and their own lingo, the freestylers have established their base camp in Tignes. Since 2013, the snowpark in Tignes saw record numbers of visitors: 3,000 people per hour rode their skis in the freestyle areas during the busy times of the season! WHERE BUDDING FREESTYLERS RUB SHOULDERS WITH THE PROS: A UNCONVENTIONAL CREW WHO PLAY BY THEIR OWN RULES For several winters now, Tignes has been riding on its notoriety and reputation from the X GAMES and has been enhancing its Freestyle zones. Big, wide, well-groomed and laser-shaped, the Snowpark in Tignes has earned its acclaim. For experts and advanced freestylers, the park offers 4 red and black-level jumps, as well as the impressive jib zone. The Goodyear boardercross is waiting alongside the snowpark all of those who are looking for great feelings in the woops. For intermediates and beginners, Tignes created 2 “Easy Parks”, real beginners’ zone for apprentice freestylers comprising of 5 greenlevel and 4 blue-level kickers, with rails and a line of rollers. Combined with “Jeep Easy Boarder”, it complements what is already available to encourage budding freestylers. PROFESSIONAL FREESTYLER - MARIE MARTINOD a story, a personality, a destiny and a killer look she is THE rider to watch. Marie Martinod from France made an unbelievable return after a 7-year break and managed to take first place at the X Games Tignes in 2013! It was a remarkable comeback for this young mother of a 5-year-old daughter. Marie is not your typical female skier. As a pillar of international freestyle skiing between 2004-2007, she disappeared from the world of freeskiing and ended her career - these things happen in life. But it was the announcement that the Halfpipe was to feature at the Olympic Games in 2014 that gave her the desire to take up her skis again and to take her life as a sportswoman and her destiny to become a champion in hand. After a 7-year break and the birth of her child, with her Rock n’Roll looks, Marie headed back to the edge of the pipe and made her big comeback on the planet freestyle podiums. She then clinched her place at the Sochi Olympic Games, where she became the first silver medalist in halfpipe skiing of the History. PROFESSIONAL IN EXTREME SPORTS - GUERLAIN CHICHERIT 4 times Ski Freeride World Champion, Rallye Raid World Champion in 2009 and driver on the Dakar made in Tignes. For 2 years Guerlain has mostly become the one who achieved the first backflip in a car with no help on the snow, the one who drove on the water with his car, and tried to beat the world record longest jump in a car on the snow. This last try is still in the minds: on jumping a distance of 82 meters, his custom built Mini crashed on landing after the car rotated beyond its anticipated trajectory. Stay tuned this winter to discover the new challenge of our extreme sports lover! Since 2013, Marie has chosen Tignes as her official resort and HQ to take off her skis and live with her family.
