WELCOME
Welcome to Imagine Arts Festival and to our varied and eclectic programme. The festival is now in its 14th year and is put together by
the hard work of local volunteers who have a love for the arts and culture.
Highlights this year include a retrospective by Waterford artist Pat Murphy, the Imagine Crime Writing Award, which goes to John
Banville, and the return of the great trad band Danú who are sure to bring the house down at the Tower Hotel. Our play writing
workshop will bring emerging writers from Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny together for the first time and hopefully this confluence
will bear fruits in future years.
Imagine is Waterford’s arts festival and we hope you will support it by attending some events and also feel free to get involved in the

This Is The Kit is the music project of the very talented
Kate Stables. Their latest album, Bashed Out, released
to much critical acclaim in April, was produced by The
National’s Aaron Dessner, and features performances by
Bryce Dessner (The National); Benjamin Lanz (Beirut),
Thomas Bartlett (The Gloaming) and Matt Barrick (The
Walkmen). Having been hiding in the “critics’ darlings”
section until now, Bashed Out’s sublime songwriting and
cool indie vibes has seen This Is The Kit pushed into the
limelight.
Based in Bristol and Paris, the band fly in exclusively for
Imagine 2015 for what will surely be one of this year’s
festival highlights.

Choice Music award winner, Adrian Crowley is a singer-songwriter
from Galway. Crowley has released six albums, with his debut A
Strange Kind arriving in 1999. He followed this with When You Are
Here You Are Family (2002), A Northern Country (2004), Long Distance
Swimmer (2007), Season of the Sparks (2009) and “I See Three Birds
Flying” (2012).
3 times nominee for Irish Album of the Year in the Choice Music,
Crowley finally claimed this prize for Season of the Sparks in 2009.
His 2014 album Some blue Morning was critically acclaimed and
confirmed Crowleys reputation as an singer and songwriter of
exceptional standing.

Founded in 2010 by Kevin O’Carroll, Waterford Concert Orchestra has developed into a high standard orchestra
providing a wide range of genres for the general public while still providing the educational material for the

favourites from every decade since the 1930s.

This year Waterford City cafés are taking part in a very novel event which will see musicians
and singers entertaining customers for the two Saturdays (17th and 24th October) of
the festival. Performing in each venue for twenty minutes, musicians will move in a rota
from each coffee shop to the next from 2.30pm till 4pm. This event, hosted by the most
atmospheric of Waterford cafés, will see customers and shoppers entertained with a
broad mix of music genres from Waterford’s established and emerging musical talents.
Performers include: Kevin Power, Anna Jordan, Cliodhna Lily Gahan, Damien Kehoe, Eoin
Dalton, Joe Meagher, Eadaion Breathnach, and Lorcan Reidy.

POETRY NIGHT WITH

This event was one of the highlights last year for Imagine when a group of new poets
performed their work at Phil Grimes Bar. Colm Keegan is a writer and performance
poet from Dublin. Since 2005, he has been shortlisted four times for the Hennessy
New Irish Writing Award, for both poetry and fiction has won the All Ireland Poetry
Slam in 2010.
He is a joint director and founder of Lingo, Ireland’s first Spoken Word festival.

His latest book ‘The Days of Surprise’ contains 67 poems on such disparate
topics as the weather forecast, the Syrian war, a visit to the GP, retail therapy,
clampers and Seamus Heaney.
Paul Durcan was born in 1944. Growing up in Mayo, he moved to London in
1966 where he met his wife Nessa O’Neill with whom he had two daughters.
His most well known publications include: “A Snail in my Prime”, “Crazy about
Women”, “Greetings to our friends in Brazil”, and “Cries of an Irish Caveman”.
He also appeared on the 1990 Van Morrison album “Enlightenment”. In 1974
he won the prestigious Patrick Kavanagh Poetry
Award. In 2014 he won the Bord Gáis Energy “Winner
of the Lifetime Achievement Irish Book Award 2014”.
His work is as funny and hard hitting as ever, some
other poem titles from his new collection include:
‘The WB Yeats Shopping Centre’, ‘The Last Great Achill
Island Volkswagen Beetle Protestant’ and ‘Irish Bankers
Shoot Dead Fifty-Seven Homeless Children’.

This evening session is aimed at an adult audience where Eddie will tell some of the most
gruesome and frightening stories involving fairies and Irish folklore and send audiences

In partnership with the Irish Writers Centre, Imagine is proud to present
the inaugural Imagine Crime Writing Award to John Banville.
The Imagine Crime Writing Award is in recognition of an Irish writer who
has made an outstanding contribution to crime fiction. The award is in
memory of Raymond Chandler and his close connections with Waterford.
John Banville will be presented is a specially commissioned box set of
Raymond Chandler novels beautifully bound by local book binder Tom
Carroll. This year’s recipient is John Banville in acknowledgement of his
crime fiction under the pseudonym Benjamin Black.
Local broadcaster Nicola Beresford will interview
John Banville on his work and then invite audience
questions to the author.

Open rehearsals of Beckett short plays, where working processes are laid bare and the public are welcome to observe and ask
questions. Movement director Libby Seward and Theatre director Ben Barnes will lead 3 days of rehearsals culminating each day
in a short performance of work. The selected plays include Quad, Act Without Words, Come and Go, Rockaby and Footfalls. This
bold approach to placing the works in unusual or counter-intuitive spaces challenges the preconception that Beckett can only be
performed in conventional theatre spaces.

Imagine is delighted to present an exhibition of works by Pat Murphy. The showing will mix a
retrospective of some of Pat’s previous work alongside some newer pieces created in the last year.
This will be Pat’s first exhibition in Waterford since his ‘Cuba’ exhibition in 2005. He lives in Ring,
Co. Waterford with his wife Ger, both of whom originally hail from Ferrybank.

This year the theme of the History and Heritage talks
as part of Imagine is ‘Crime and Punishment’ and look
at various aspects of this theme throughout history,
including Brehon Laws, Public hangings in Waterford
and piracy around our coasts. Our special guest John
Lonergan.
John is a native of Tipperary and has managed to
advocate on behalf of prisoners throughout his career
as Governor of Mountjoy Prison.
John entered the
prison service in 1968 and in the years that followed
he saw human nature at its worst - and often, unexpectedly, at its best. He
developed a deep understanding both of human nature and of Irish society.
He is also a great observer of life and this is sure to be one of the main talks
during Imagine 2015.

Dr Pat McCarthy examines the history and practices of hanging
in Waterford. It was the custom to hang the convict at, or near,
the scene of the crime. In a later period these hangings happened
near the Jail in Ballybricken and eventually within the walls of the

jail. One had little chance of appeal, with the execution taking

This event is a magical miscellany of ten minute local history talks which are mostly connected
with the sea trade of yore with musical interludes of song, comedy and the spoken word,
accompanied with complimentary blaas and fillings.
