It’s your news between District newsletters. Generally, you’ll find items about multiple buildings rather than from just one building. Or, it’s information that reflects positively on us beyond the school district. All of it is great news about Waterford. Please share the great news with friends and neighbors. Mott Engineering Students Go to States! The Regional Michigan Industrial and Technology Education Society (MITES) student competition project judging was recently held. Eleven of the 22 Architectural and Engineering CADD Lab Mott High School students submitted sixteen projects and six of those projects placed between 1st and 4th place, which moved onto State competition. Two of the 11 students automatically move on to States in order to compete in the Applied Technology (AT) categories of CO2 Dragsters and Structural Towers. Congratulations to our Corsair Architects and Engineers! Kettering FIRST Robotics Team: World Competition in St. Louis! 2016 Counselor of the Year! Team 3098 made it all the way to the quarterfinals in the World Robotic’s Competition! The team is in the top 10% in the World (out of over 3,100 teams). This was also the 5th time in 6 years Kettering’s team has attended the World Championship. Many thanks to the sponsors, especially General Motors, along with FCA, Atlas Copco, and Faurecia for making this opportunity happen. Excellence in Education Scholar Waterford Kettering student, Morgan Ratliff has been recognized as a 2016 Excellence in Education Scholar. This award is presented by Oakland Schools and the Oakland Press to honor top students from around the County. Morgan participates in Link Crew, student leadership and is a Middle School Youth Leader at her local church. Morgan also received the Unsung Hero Award presented by the State to leadership students and she received a Daughters of the American Revolution award. Congrats, Morgan! Grayson Earns Gold Award! Mason Orchestra Earns Superior Rating at States! Congratulations to the Mason 8th grade orchestra! They earned a 1st division (superior) rating at State Festival. The orchestra is under the direction of Molly Wyber. This is a proud moment for the Mason orchestra program as this is the first superior rating they have received at state competition. Grayson Elementary School has really stepped up to the plate to create a healthier school environment! The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Education, United Dairy Industry of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Action for Healthy Kids extended congratulations to Grayson, their team and students on receiving the MICHIGAN SCHOOL WELLNESS GOLD AWARD! Each winning school was recognized at a special ceremony at the Capitol Building in Lansing. Mott Student Leadership Honors Senior Citizens Mott's Student Leadership worked at the Mother's Day luncheon at the Senior Center. They did a great job serving lunch and making our seniors feel special! Career and Technical Education Awards Congratulations to Ciara Mahrle, Kettering High School CTE student, and Hunter Schmidt, Mott High School CTE student, who received awards at the Oakland County Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student Recognition Ceremony for outstanding technical achievement this month. Many thanks to instructors Nancy Haller and Laurel Meribela. Durant Most Improved Each term, select students from Durant High School are awarded for significant improvements made in their academic standing. Students are honored at a recognition luncheon, sponsored by the Waterford Foundation for Public Education. Congratulations to all of the students who earned awards for this term on May 9 (left to right): Nicolas Gonzalez, Tyler Williams, Principal Craig Blomquist, Kyle Irwin, Caitlynn Henry, Ethan Dobler, Austin Minando, Danille See, and Alondra Jimenez. First Friday in May: Visual Arts Teachers Visual Arts teachers were celebrated on First Friday in May! Waterford School District is fortunate to have quality visual arts opportunities offered to all of our students, K-12. Our outstanding art teachers bring color and creativity to our students in a way that inspires, educates and empowers. The month ended with art shows at both Mott and Kettering. Our teachers are amazingly talented and bring out the talent in students. Thank you, Visual Arts teachers, for all you do! Graduate Named Grand Valley Drum Major!! Lewis Russell, 2011 Graduate of Waterford Kettering High School, was named Drum Major of the Grand Valley State University Laker Marching Band for the 2016-17 season. Lewis was formerly Drum Major of the Kettering Marching Captains in 2010-2011. Way to go! Oakland County Teachers of the Year Each year, Oakland Schools honors exemplary Oakland County public school teachers through the Teacher of the Year program. Top educators are recognized for their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession. Congratulations to Mason Teacher Teri Dittman, Durant Teacher Jim Esbrook, and Grayson Teacher Nichole Rinehart for being recognized as Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year nominees. Lacrosse All-American Waterford United Girls Lacrosse Coach, and Kettering graduate, Danielle Drake currently plays Lacrosse for Oakland University. Danielle has been named First Team All-American for Defense. Kettering & Mott State Track & Field Finalists Congratulations and best of luck to Waterford School District student athletes who qualified at the regional meet to compete in the State Track and Field Finals Saturday, June 4! The Waterford Foundation for Public Education received a $10,500 contribution in May from the AT&T Foundation. The grant will support a summer video program for high school students who will be filming elementary students for a new “Wilber the Wombat” reading series. Our State Representative, Jim Tedder, was on hand for the check presentation. “The Waterford Foundation for Public Education continues to do a tremendous job of supporting the Waterford School District,” he said. Jim Murray, president of AT&T Michigan, said the Waterford Foundation for Public Education has a long history of supporting projects that benefit Waterford students and the community. “We’re thrilled to help them continue their fine work and support the success of students throughout the community,” he said.
