MISSION STATEMENT

know, love, and serve God as a faith community. To celebrate
the presence of Christ among us, we will enhance the community
atmosphere of our parish and develop stewardship of time, talent,
and treasure.

Parish Office Hours
Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 12 Noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - April 29, 2012
MAY CROWNING
AND
SCHOOL ART FESTIVAL
The first Sunday in May is usually set aside as the
day we honor Mary as the Mother of the Church. Mary
served the church by being a
disciple of Jesus during her
lifetime. Not only did she give us
Jesus, Mary also followed and
served him. She was a true
disciple of the Lord! It is only
appropriate, therefore, that we
should honor her. Join us
Sunday, May 6, following the 10 o’clock Mass in church
as we crown, with flowers, the statue of Mary.
The Holy Souls Art Festival will
also be on Sunday, May 6. The
school will be open to see all of
the magnificent artwork from
11:00 a.m. – 1:30p.m. Please
drop by and see the amazing
talent of our students.

Understanding My Value
To My Church Community
Robert Flynn

Laura Humphries, Parish Life Coordinator
[In 1987 a newspaper photographer was sent to
Ecuador to cover a devastating earthquake there. In
the midst of incredible suffering, he witnessed a scene
that moved him deeply. This is what he wrote.]
WHY:
The line was long but moving briskly. And in that line
at the very end, stood a young girl about 12 years of
age. She waited patiently as those in front of the long
line received a little rice, some canned goods or a
little fruit. Slowly she was getting closer to the front of
that line, closer to the food.

School for 12 students per year.)
From time to time she would glance across the street.
She didn’t notice ahead of her the growing concern
on the faces of those distributing food. The food was
running out. Their anxiety began to show more and
more, but she didn’t notice. Her attention seemed
always to focus on the three figures under the tree
across the street. At long last she stepped forward to
get her food. But the only thing left was a banana.
The workers were almost ashamed to tell her that
was all that was left. She didn’t seem to mind.
Quietly she took the precious gift and ran across the
street where three small children waited – perhaps
her sisters and brother. Very deliberately she peeled
the banana and very carefully divided it into three
equal parts. She placed the precious food into the
eager hands of the three youngsters – one for you,
one for you, one for you. She then sat down and
began to lick the inside of the banana peel. In that
moment I swear I saw the face of God. An excerpt

We probably don’t have to experience something
quite so devastating to give of ourselves to others
but this story truly illustrates what God means about
serving others. There are many opportunities to serve
in our church and in our community; we just need to
be ready to open our eyes to them.

The Holy Souls Seniors are heading for the hills! Make
a day (and night) of it on Monday, October 22, on our
bus trip to Northwest Arkansas. First stop is Crystal
Bridges Museum in Bentonville. You won’t want to miss
this opportunity to see some real treasures of American
art. After an overnight stay in Eureka Springs, we will
visit Thorncrown Chapel, a masterpiece of architecture
in a peaceful woodland setting. All this plus good food,
good friends and perhaps a bit of fall foliage. Call Ann
Hoffmann (666-8223) for more details and to reserve
your seat.
Discovering the Biblical Significance of Mary
- Dr. Scott Hahn
In one of the most inspiring CDs we have ever offered on
the Virgin Mary, Dr. Scott Hahn reveals incredible insights
on the Biblical basis for the Catholic teachings regarding
Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant. This presentation
will help clarify many misconceptions and clearly
demonstrate how Catholic teachings are unmistakably rooted
in Sacred Scripture. Following the presentation is a bonus
segment from a prior talk by Dr. Hahn, “Why Do We Have
a Pope?”
Get ready to skydive into adventure at this year’s Vacation
Bible School as we Parachute with the Angels and trust
God as our co-pilot. Children grades Pre-K through 5th
grade will learn all about saints and how to use them in
their lives through fun lessons, music and crafts. New
activities this year include Science Club experiments and
taking care of the body that God gave us through yoga fun,
wellness from Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and learning
more about healthy food choices. Join us June 11 - 14th
every morning from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. There will be an
evening celebration for the whole family on June 14th. The
cost is $20 per child but no child will be turned away, tuition
assistance is available! Registration forms are available in
the church office or on our website.
We ask for a donation of $3.00 per CD to help continue this
program. Checks can be made payable to the parish. Donations
will be used towards the purchase of additional materials.
