LEARNING FORWARD CONFERENCE
This week Mrs. Antoon and three teachers from our Leadership Team, Bethie Boekestein, Laura
Regan, and Wendy Mitchell, were invited to present at the 2012 Annual Learning Forward Conference
in Boston. The Learning Forward Conference offers education leaders the connections, tools, learning
opportunities, and resources they need to understand and implement effective professional learning
in their schools. We are proud of our outstanding teachers as they continue to be exemplars in their
field. We look forward to our Leadership Team returning and sharing their learning and knowledge
with the faculty.

Volunteer Needs! Please read to see how you can help:
Monte Carlo Silent Auction and Raffle Committee: This group will help
get amazing raffle and auction prizes for our big event. We have created a great donation letter that
we will use to get the word out to local business to help bring in prizes. Please consider being a part
of this team!
Reward Coordinator: This Coordinator will find local businesses to donate gift cards and prizes
for our ISP and renaissance rally rewards.
E-waste Co-Chair Event Coordinator:
PSP is looking for a co-chair that will work with
Tony Tingler, a Rocklin Academy dad, to help him plan and run an E-waste recycling event. This would
be an ideal position for another dad that wants to get involved. Some lifting could be required.
Technology Grant Research Coordinator: PSP will be purchasing technology this year for
our classrooms. There are many grants available that can be researched on line. We need someone to
volunteer their time searching for grants to match PSP's spending on technology.
Technology Grant Writer: PSP is looking for a volunteer that can work with Administration to
write a technology grant for our school. They will work with the Research Coordinator to find the
best grants to apply for. This will take a person with good writing skills and a willingness to research
how to successfully write a school grant. This will be a huge benefit to our kids’ school and we really
hope we can find someone within our parent group to write a grant this year! Please email the PSP if
you are interested at: PSP@rocklinacademy.org. Thank you!
E-Waste Recycling Program:
Our school is partnering with a great company called EWaste 4 Good. They are an e-waste recycling company that helps schools raise money by recycling ewaste. You can log on to their website at www.eWaste4good.com to schedule a pick-up at a residence,
business or other location. They cover all of northern California so your family or friends from all
over northern California can participate in our e-Waste fundraiser. Please be sure to check out the
flier that is coming home in your child's Wednesday Family Folder last week. Simply schedule a
pick-up with e- Waste 4 Good and the organization will submit the money directly to us! The holidays
are almost here, so out with the old electronics and appliances to make room for the new—and help
Rocklin Academy, all at the same time! Please contact Tony Tingler, if you are willing to help run this
program, or of you have any questions at Ttingler@advantel.com.
Some of the items they will pick up include: Televisions, computers, Fax machines,
telephones, vacuums keyboards, mice, networking equipment, wires and cords, household phones,
medical equipment, video games, monitors, calculators, printers, speakers, scanners, laptops,
power tools, small appliances, stereo systems, refrigerators and much more. Clean house and help
us raise money too! It doesn't get any better than this!
TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
The
Rocklin
Academy
Family
of
Schools
is
in
the process of establishing a Technology Committee made up of
teachers, administrators, and parents from each site. Doug
Johnson, Rocklin Academy Board Chair, will serve as the initial chair of the
committee whose objectives will be to assess our current technology needs, evaluate our support
mechanisms, and plan for future technology adoptions. Parent involvement is a critical part of our
effort and while we plan on conducting user and parent surveys, we would like to have a parent from
each school on the committee. Parents will join teachers and administrators from each site as well as
current technology personnel. Our objective is to have an assessment and draft technology plan that
can be integrated into future budget planning. I anticipate having 6-8 meetings over the course of
the next several months. A more permanent form of the Technology Committee will be established as
part of our effort to meet the ongoing technology needs of our schools.
If you are interested in serving on the Technology Committee, please contact Doug Johnson at
doug.ra@att.net.
FOOD DRIVE & COAT DRIVE!
Please join our ACES group and RA’s Daisy Girl Scout Troop #1136 in collecting food for
the Placer Food Bank. ACES is also teaming with RA’s Girl Scout Troop #1819 to collect
coats for the needy. Our Daisy and Girl Scout Troops and ACES group decided to give
back during the holidays and help those in need. Collection boxes will be located in the
school office. Thanks for your support!
SACMATH NEWS
NEWS FLASH! SacMath has changed their rules this year and 6th graders ARE allowed
to compete in the elementary-school contests (as well as the middle-school contests).
The first SacMath contest was held on Sunday, Nov. 18th. It was an all-day affair consisting of four
individual events and three team events.
Four students from Rocklin Academy participated: Two 3rd graders: Rayan Holmes (Turnstone)
and Arjun Sapru (Meyers), and two 4th graders: Cyrus Beckhorn and Christopher Ranlett (both from
Meyers).
Ray Holmes won a medal for 2nd place in the "Maps, Graphs, and Charts" event for 3rd graders. Way
to go!
The team as a whole did not win a trophy, but did do well enough to qualify for the district play-off
event in March. That's a great result for a team this young. Congratulations! Special mention goes to
Chris Ranlett who got up at 5 AM to go to a swim meet and then came to SacMath for the team
events in the afternoon. Now, that's determination!
The next two qualifier contests (open to all) will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15th, and Saturday, Jan.
19th. These will be shorter, half-day contests (8 AM to noon) with three individual events and just one
team event. We'd like to use these events to get as many RA students as possible invited to the
district play-off. Then we'll reform our teams to have the best chance of advancing to the state
finals.
To have our best chance of success, we need a couple more 3rd graders and a lot more 4th, 5th, and 6th
graders.
Practice Schedule: We will have two practices per week leading up to contest on Dec. 15th. They will
be held on Wednesdays and Fridays in Room 14 (Mrs. Curtis) at RA Turnstone from 3:20-4:40
PM. It's OK if you can't come to both practices. Just come to as many as you can. Please remember
to bring your own pencils, eraser, scratch paper, and calculator ("TI 30X IIS" available at Target or
Walmart for $14).
There will also be practice sessions for 6th graders only at WSCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
3:40-5:00 PM in Mrs. McClain's room. For further information, please email Richard Holmes at:
Richard.Holmes@starstream.net.
GATE TESTING IN FEBRUARY
We have had a few parents inquire about GATE testing. Rocklin Academy offers GATE
testing once a year for students in grades 2- 6. This year, Gate testing will be done in
early February at the WSCA campus. Registration for this test will begin after Winter
break. Please contact our GATE coordinator, Jesenia Bomgardner, with any additional
questions at jbomgardner@rocklinacademy.org.
